Hosadus is more powerful in all respects by X10- higher level, more equipment, and the Soul Gem of Thanatos, which makes him effectively invulnerable and immortal. The connection between X10 and the previous modules in the series seamless. There is no explanation of how Hosadus survived his previous encounter with the characters. That is something that you'll want to work out depending on your player's actions in the previous modules. >> The "blue knife" is called > the Crystal Dagger of > Cymorrak, and the Master is more vulnerable to this > then other weapons. >so it is or isn't the humanoids blue knife? where is >it found in X10? It is not. As I recall the legend of the blue knife first appeared some time after X10 was published (perhaps in Gazetteer 10: The Orcs of Thar). The Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak is the only thing which can destroy the Soul Gem, and thus the only way of destroying Hosadus. At the beginning of X10 the dagger is split into three pieces. The characters have the opportunity to find two of the pieces, one in Alfheim and one in the Five Shires. The third is found by agents of the Master, it isn't clear where. The characters have to catch the agents and sieze the third piece. The logic of the module kind of breaks down here, although the characters know that the dagger is important, they don't really have the opportunity to search for it. They just stumble across the pieces during their diplomatic mission. That part of the module could use some work. As for the Blue Knife, in spite of later interpretations (the Knife was actually a sword, the Blue Knife and the Crystal Dagger are on and the same, etc.), Gazetteer 10 makes it pretty clear that Bruce Heard intended the Blue Knife to be housed in the great temple in Aengomar (how ever you spell it, the city built by the Shadow Elves and currently inhabited by the humanoids). However, there's no reason that in your campaign the Blue Knife couldn't be substituted for the Crystal Dagger. I think a desperate quest to Aengomar would actually be much more interesting then just stumbling across it. Now for my own question. Although I own X10 I've never had the opportunity to run it. My question is simple, does the War Machine portion of the module add to the fun? Just reading the module, it seems to me that allowing the players to control the armies would take a lot of time and detract from the real interesting parts of the module- the diplomatic element and (less so) the showdown with the Master. In practice, does the commanding armies portion nicely compliment the character's diplomatic efforts, or undercut the focus of the adventure? -Andy Morrow _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 09:52:52 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Eric Anondson Subject: A map of Mystara? At the beginning of X10 That's right. I suppose I managed to confuse the way I ran it with the way it was presented, although the fact that I still haven't read all the way through Gaz10 might have something to do with my confusion :-) And I had totally forgotten about the Soul Gem of Thanatos. If you keep that as Thanatos when running WotI, it'd make for some messy politics if the Master dies, since that would have to be a stroke against Thanatos, who is supposed to assume reigning hierarch status in 1010. >it. I had one player who was especially interested in wargaming direct the allied forces when I ran it, while all the players played together through the rest of the module. It's kind of nice to have a good idea of where massive armies are at any given time. I think it's nice to have evidence of the steadily advancing armies of Hule to lend to the atmosphere of desperation, but it could probably work fairly well without. Especially if you have a pre-determined outcome that you would like to achieve, such as the results of WotI, it might be good for the DM to run the war with more narrative focus than actual gaming. For me, however, running the War Machine portion was a lot of fun and added to the game. SPOILER WARNING: (this is your disclaimer: if you want to be surprised by stuff in either version of B3, X11, the Almanacs, the Savage Coast/Red Steel setting, the Glantrian/Wendarian/Denagothian setting, or Wrath of the Immortals, this post probably isn't for you). The Sword of Spartusia is described in Wells' original B3 as a ruby-bladed sword with a great deal of history: "Tales speak of a race of ancient red dragon worshippers creating this sword for Spartusia because she saved their queen dragon from vengeful knights of other lands. The sword was given a trim and womanly appearance both in size and beauty to match the beauty of Spartusia, and a bite that was deep to match her courage and strength" (p. 31 of the pdf file). It goes on to say that Spartusia was, according to legend, eventually swallowed up by the earth. What if Spartusia was swallowed up by the earth when she attained immortality in the sphere of entropy and changed her name to Idris? After all, it has been suggested that Idris attained immortality after founding and having attained high mastery of the secret craft of Dracology. Wells places B3 in Glantri (although later products disagree) so the legends of Spartusia could well be local stories of a real historic figure. Further supporting evidence could possibly include the fact that D'hmis, the baroness of Gulluvia, has a name very similar to Idris (I know it's a stretch, but it could be a cultural tie at least). The biggest weakness that I see in this idea is that Idris is associated firstly with Black Dragons, while Spartusia seems to be affiliated with Red Dragons. One potential solution is that Spartusia really was a Red Dracologist (I know that's not the real term, but I don't have GAZ3 or G:KoM handy to check what is) who decided she wanted to retain some degree of anonimity upon attaining immortality (after all, she most likely upset the four "mainstream" dragon immortals in her questing) so chose the black dragon as her symbol as a tactic of confusion. Another possibility is that she was indeed a "Black Dracologist" who either saved and allied with or betrayed the Red Dragon Queen. Another hurdle could be the one that anything from this version of B3 will always face: conflicts between it and un-recalled published materials. There are at least a few similarities between the Sword of Spartusia and the Sword of Arik, starting with the ruby blade and the powerful magic of both. There are major differences as well, however. They certainly look quite different from one another (cf. the picture on p. 27 of the green Wells & Moldvay version, which shows both swords in one illo or the picture of the Sword of Spartusia on p. 26 of the PDF and the description of each item in its respective module). They also have very different purposes (The Sword of Spartusia certainly sounds like an artifact, while the sword of Arik has no mortal purpose but to summon Arik or destroy the Eye of Arik). The other potential source of conflict I see with other published materials is that it wouldn't fit well into the campaigns for DMs who have described the region of Gullavia differently than did Wells. One further issue: is there any specific published account of Idris' sphere? I don't ahve any of those resources handy, but I'm pretty sure that X11, at least, never identifies her specifically as an entropic immortal. If she was indeed a Glantrian noble, then she could have obtained immortality through the Nucleus of the Spheres in Energy or, perhaps, through more conventional means in any sphere (except, I would argue, Matter). I'm going to offer the rough outline of a possible solution that might work for almost any campaign... First a word on the map of NW Glantri in Wells' B3: this solution presupposes that, at some point, an area resembling, at least remotely, Gullavia and Argenta's Principality existed on the Adri Varma. It seems to me, at least, that it would be fairly easy for pretty much any DM to agree that, at some point in history, there existed Glantrian settlements in the Wildlands that, in most campaigns at least, were destroyed at some point in history. Now for my proposed solution: Spartusia was a poweful magic-user whose origins lie in what are now known as the Northern Wildlands. She cooperated with her neighbors to the southeast in their efforts to create a great magical empire, but her involvement was primarily motivated by selfish pursuits of magical knowledge and ability. She had adventured throughout the continent, and was well-repected and feared. She was known by her peers in Glantri to be an expert on Draconic sciences and magic. Even then there were whispered rumors that she controlled a powerful artifact, a sword made of pure dragon blood. This is actually more or less true--it was a Red Steel sword created under still-mysterious circumstances as payment for some mighty deed which Spartusia performed while adventuring in the Savage Coast. Its enchantment process involved blood of a ruby dragon, and Red Steel is itself the blood of the Great One (Red Steel Campaign Book, p. 48). Though Spartusia was unable to wield the sword as a weapon herself, it greatly enhanced the abilities of the wielder as a Dracologist, and she was careful to place many enchantments on the sword to ensure that it would work only for her and never be turned against her. Spartusia with the help of the sword, founded the school of Dracology and eventually became its High Mistress. Spartusia was widely respected as one of the most kind-hearted and just rulers of Glantri--her peaceful dominion was along with its neighbors, a safe haven for dwarves, halflings, and clerics, who faced persecution elsewhere in Glantri [note: I'm not sure whether she should have ruled as Princess before Argenta, as Baroness of Gullavia, or as some other Baroness]. However, this was merely an effort to gain the support of the people and the more progressive-minded rulers of Glantri, and to help foster communities that shared her personal suspicion of elves. A master politician, she managed to manipulate herself into positions of ever-greater power, eventually gaining preeminence in the new School of Magic. She had been questing for immortality [using David Knott's excellent Entropic Paths ideas, she would likely have been an Archvillain or, perhaps, a Conqueror] since shortly after attaining the rank of High Mistress and realizing that the next step was to become an immortal. Her various quests took her throughout the surrounding areas, and into Wendar and Denagoth. Eventually, as her plots were nearing their culmination, her worst fears were realized: an elven knight, suspicious of her cooperation with dwarves and clerics, penetrated her innermost defenses with the assistance of a Ruby Dragon and escaped with proof of her immense evil. She had to accellerate her plans, which ultimately brought great death and destruction to Glantri. She had been coordinating plans with anti-Magocracy forces for a while, and she launches what is supposed to be a massive invasion of Glantri with dwarven and halfling forces and the support of various clerical orders opposed to Glantrian policies. They manage to "liberate" most of the Adri Varma, slaughtering all the elves they can find and many magic-users, but only at tremendous cost to their number. While Spartusia convinces the council to send their forces to stop the invasion of the north, she has her massive network of spies make the humanoids of the Broken Lands and the Dwarves of Rockhome aware of the lack of protection in the south and incite rebellion in the country. Her agents in the elven principality manage to create some very deep rifts, with each clan blaming the other for the attempted revolution. Spartusia eventually betrays the rebellion, helping magically transport an enormous army of elves from the south to stop the invasion, but she also makes sure that many elves also die. During this massive battle, she attains whatever the requisite number of deaths is and is seen to be consumed by the earth [this is probably in AC 859, although I'm not really sure about that]. Having attained immortality in the Sphere of Entropy and ruining vast tracts of what was northwestern Glantri, Spartusia changed her name to Idris, laid low for a few decades, and continued her research on the most effective way to increase her power. Only her sponsor knows who she truly was in her mortal life, although other immortals are beginning to make the connections. Okay, that's what I have so far. Let me know whether you like the idea, whether I should pursue it; comments, criticisms, suggestions are always welcome. I'd like to thank whomever worked on the excellent recent events in Denagoth for the Mystaran Almanacs for inspiring me to think so much about Idris, and I apologize for making this so %#@$ing long. Nonbody is allowed to wear weapons nor cast magic, apart from the priests of Syrinx. * Arenula (pop. 14,500) is ruled by the rakasta lord Striga. It is mostly settled by the feline humanoids, who work in the few farmlands of the surrounding region, more fertile than the rest of the country. * Xining (6,100) is a small city whose ruler is the former king of Selemy, Lord Nychari, who rule it in the name of Queen Luxor. However, the project was put on indefinite hold with the premature death of my Mystara campaign. For a general idea of what I was thinking of doing ceck out my "Gith of Mystara" article at http://dnd.starflung.com/gith.html Basically, I was going to set it in the GreatPlain of Fire and the Black Mountains aroung 1008-9 AC. The slave tribe was going to be replaced with a band of Sindhi freedom fighters and the Nibenese templars were going to be replaced by a Hulea raiding party. The githyanki city was located beneath the Black Mountains, and their plan was to build a portal to the Pits of Banishment and free themselves and their Carnifex masters. (Probably leading to a near whole replacement of the third part of the module) That's about as far as I got. The dagger in Oenkmar is just a dagger +1 with continual light cast on it. My plan for WotI was to send the characters on a wild goose chase into Oenkmar only to return with a dagger +1. Finally Im sending one of my (now) NPCs to the list for usage in campaigns, if desired: Knight-Brother Aurelius, Member of the Inner Circle of the Knights of the Holy Grail, designated Abbot of Banz OD&D: Level 24, lawful, Paladin St: 16, In: 14, Wis: 16, Dex: 18, Con: 16, Ch: 17 Hp: 103, AC: -8 (War/Adventure) / 0 (At Ease); Weapons: +5 Holy Avenger "Durandan" (Int 9, det. inv., det. traps, det. magic; of slicing, +7 vs. Giants, indestructible), +4 dagger of Purity ("dispel evil" at 10th level 3/day on hit, always glowing); Armor: (War) +4 breastplate (=^chain mail) of reflection and flight, +3 ring of protection, Cape "Darion" (-3 AC, 2-12 lvls rechargeable drain protection, non-detection) (At Ease) Clothing of Purity (never dirty, perm. "prot. from evil", AC 9), Cape "Darion", +3 ring of protection Magical Items: +3 ring of protection, ring of holiness, backpack of holding, boots of travelling & leaping, tent of security (Warning, prot. from evil 10), flying carpet, rod of health, staff of healing (34 charges), 1 potion of full health Normal Items: fine crafted saddle, bedroll, 4 torches, 6 flasks of oil, 6 holy water, Holy Symbol (cross) Cash: 43 platinum pieces, 10 gold pieces, 15 silver pieces, 23 copper pieces Secured treasure: Gems worth 400.000 gold, many sacral figurines and acceccoires, designed for the new abbey; the whole treasure is reserved to complete the construction of the abbey. History: Aurelius was born 980 AC as one of two sons of a wealthy merchant. Titus, his brother, was almost ten years older and a reknown member of the same order. When Aurelius was trained as squire in the order, Titus died under mysterious circumstances far away from Thyatis. Some days therafter, Aurelius dreamed of Titus speeking to him. Some important matters have to be cared for, Titus said. So Aurelius left Thyatis at 3rd lvl with his destination Alfheim. Many adventures showed him that he had divine help. Many years (levels) later, at lvl 12, he really met his ghostly brother, after the "matters" were finally solved. Then he returned for the first time to Thyatis since his departure. Because he got a proof of his mission of the last years, he was accepted as hero of the order in his mid-twenty (1006 AC). He was promoted to the full membership of the order (he had the rank of a squire til 12th lvl!) and roams Mystara as knight-brother since then. Personality: Aurelius is the kind of a proud warrior everyone knows. He wears his breastplate with dignity and inner strength. Perhaps anyone has seen "Hercules" in TV, when Angel Michael appeared the first time to wake up the Four Riders of Apokalypse. Aurelius is nearly excactly this Michael: Incarnated "Good" with a tendency to overconfidence (Many, many times in our adventures :) He is a humble servant of his church, defends his faith against all kinds of attacks but accepts other religions. Hes fond of the Ylari "True Believers" who all seem to be paladins in their faith. Magic is acceptable because the gods created it, his too. He isnt really interested in ownership of land or even ruling. Hes made the job of ruling Black Eagle for three years until a suitable successor was found. Now hes waiting for his new abbey in Karameikos to be ready for moving in. The abbey "Banz" lies in south east of Karameikos, 30 miles south of the Lake of Lost Dreams because Laren Nightmaster petitioned the abbey to be near that place. In his position in the highest religious order in Thyatis (in my Mystara setting :) he is recognized as knight in most countries. In Thyatis hes able to take command in most situations of all thyatian troops except the royal guard. His commands can of course be countermanded by authorized "regular" commanders of same or higher rank. For comparison hes treated as a junior general (> captain, 9th lvl), 230 squires (<9th lvl) and 34 pure clerics. Of those, only 47 knight-brothers, 180 squires and 20 clerics are more or less permanently stationed in Thyatis, the rest roams the world. The order is ruled by an "Inner Circle" consisting of 7 knight-brothers (>17th lvl). This "ruling" council is assisted by 14 squires. All of them carry a special ring, which is trough clerical magic protected against misuse, to be recognizeable of their position. The Inner Circle meets at least four times a year and on special occasions. Each member of the Inner Circle can take full command over all members of the order, perhaps on later discussion at a meeting. The line of command is designed by deeds of the members, appraised by the Inner Circle. So it is possible for a 17th lvl paladin to command a 19th lvl paladin. A command promotion of one member is for two years. In this time only because of grave faults the command can be revoced on unison vote of the Inner Circle. The order is independend of the army. Its duty is to protect the most holy item of the Thyatian church: The Holy Grail. A military organization of paladins. The fighting aspekt is very important, so excellent weapon training available (training up to Grand Master possible in most weapons). A knight-brother (name-level) is superior to army officers of same level. ************ So. Theres much more to tell (even in my conjured "know language", 1st level version of that spell :), but the NPC should leave place for your adaption to your Mystara. Ill send a timeline of my campaigns in a few weeks, after much work Ive to do in recalling the adventures... The sword of Aurelius will get a special mail, too, because it is thought as historical weapon (Roland the Paladin of the true history of Germany wore this weapon forget by Wayland. Legend tells). And "Durang" was the indestructible helm of Roland, if memory serves correctly. A story to read again the next days... Ive never adapted any PC (now NPC) of my campaings to AD&D because I bought just 5 roleplaying-books in my live... no place for AD&D :) If someone could mail me the statistics of Terari, please. I heard hes kind of a 20th lvl mage. AD&D or OD&D? Special powers? Skills? Items? Enemies :)? winking with a blue-finger cantrip yours Daniel Mayer aka Laren Nightmaster ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 22:25:39 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: pds3 Subject: D&D Movie MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 WARNING--if you haven't seen the D&D movie yet, I would sincerely recommend that you not read further. Since I had a couple hours to kill this afternoon (and the $5.50 for a matinee and a soda),I decided to ignore everyone's advice and see Dungeons & Dragons. Honestly, I am quite grateful to all who had previously panned the movie on this list (I ignored the warnings and, while sober, saw it anyway), because I had such low expectations that it compared favorably to what I was prepared for. Jeremy Irons was awful, the writing really sucked, it was edited poorly and the makeup was terrible. But the visuals were, by and large, excellent and most of the sound effects were fairly good. The story was poorly developed, but it was not without potential. I also thought the view of elves presented was excellent. Finally, the acting of the core characters, with the exception of the Childlike Empress (did she even have a name?), Dwarf, and Profion, was excellent considering their lame scripts. Still, the insistence on pushing D&D as a movie, as well as a game, aimed at 9-11 year old boys is unfortunate at best. It gives the overall impression of a 6-hour miniseries that was poorly edited to fit into an hour and a half. There were certainly annoying inconsistencies, poor directorial decisions, and serious flaws, but overall it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. As for its Mystara connection, it certainly seems as if they had based Izmir VERY closely on Alphatia (except that there are apparently only three female spellcasters in the country, while there are at very least several hundred male spellcasters). Indeed, how could anyone claim this is a "Generic" setting when the characters are so thoroughly Mystaran: don't these people remember the characters used in the movie, like Thief and Mage were all taken directly from Hail the Heroes and the K:KoA cd? Sure, they lost Fighter and Cleric, but they were handily replaced by Elf, Commoner, and Dwarf (sorry, I just hate hearing characters called, in-character, by their character class or social class in RPGs). Still, i think we should keep the obvious connections to Mystara on the downlow. Any new players it attracts would probably get an entirely incorrect view of Mystara if they knew how similar they were :-( Patrick ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 10:09:47 -0500 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: James Straight Subject: Re: D&D Movie MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----Original Message----- From: pds3 To: MYSTARA-L@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM Date: Monday, December 18, 2000 12:41 AM Subject: [MYSTARA] D&D Movie > Jeremy Irons was awful rest snipped Am I the only one who really liked Profion? URSI Area: 21,030 kmq Population: 89,300 (95% humans, 5% rakastas ) Government Type: Ursi is a monarchy. It is ruled by a king, controlled by a Council that is made of 60 representatives, who have the right to depose a king if they manage to collect 45 votes. If this happens, they must choose a member of the royal family, anyway. Twelve representatives are elected by the cities of Sasarru and Calgaris, thirty are nobles, and eighteen come from the druids and clerics of the Bear. Important Figures: Karkhangiu III, King of Ursi Description: The easternmost kingdom of the Inner Circle is settled mostly by the human race of the Ursinians. Rakastas are very rare, and not many are the Nentsunian humans. The Ursinians are proud of their culture and ancestry. They worship the Spirit of the Bear, and their druids and clerics possess shapeshifting abilities. The Ursinians are watched with suspicion outside the Inner Circle, and weird stories of werebeasts are told in the Outer Circle nations that border the kingdom. However, Ursi is a peaceful land, whose eastern borders are occupied by forests where hunters and woodcutters live. In the western area, influenced by one of the ten Devices, are most farmlands, and a couple of big cities. Sasarru (pop. 11,400) is not the capital of the land, although it hosts the Palace of Consumption, where one of the Devices is kept. The city is built on the shores of the Sea of Simurgh, at the confluence of the River Rusu; the absence of dangerous cliffs and maelstroms near the sea has allowed the Ursinians, only ones in Nentsun, to have a consistent and popular fishing industry. A lot of cod is salted and essiccated, and then exported for good prices to the southern kingdoms. Calgaris (pop. 27,000) is the capital. It is a city of artisans and merchants, where religion plays a very important role. During the year, several festivities in the name of the Bear are held; the city also hosts an University of Theology, and a College of Herbalism. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 12:03:09 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: thibault sarlat Subject: Re: NPC: Knight-Brother Aurelius (long) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit corrections: Roland was indeed a Frank but his sword was called Durandal... No particular reason why, I think he's just on a power trip. He currently has a sizable dominion in karameikos and has had so for a couple of years. Thyatian of birth he does not have much regard for the conflict between the traldarians and the thyatians (hasn't rally noticed it) but institutes fair laws and low taxes. This however is entirely for his own gain. It is not because he wants people to get a good deal but that if they get a good deal he percieves they will make his dominion grow. Money is no object with a horde from adventuring of about 2 million gp (I know I shouldn't have given him so much but I was young and foolish (litrally)). His army is sizable by karameikian standards and well equiped, but is still dwarfed by the major powers (thyatis, alphitia, etc.) but is enough to give most dominions a run for their money. He is on "friendly" terms with stefan (if you consider kidnapping stefans relitives so he could rescue them and get in stefans goodbooks to be "friendly") and will not "rebel" directly, but desperately desires more power. Independance of this dominion is out of the question. given the delicate situation that exists in the knowen world there is little room for his dreams. Lately he has been turning his attention to norworld. This is interesting because the year is only AC984, a year before alphaitia starts showing interest in colinization of norworld and eight years before erical becomes king (erical is about 12 years old). It is posible that his colinization encourages alphatias interest. The current plan is to take a couple of ships, some elete soldiers, and some magically created stone giants, some slaves, and clear the land and grow some crops. Once the first crops are growen the can support more people so he brings in more people to cultivate the land which are fed by the crops of the first set of colinists. There is one problem with this however, getting the people. I have said that about the maximum slaves he could recrut from thyatis(city) is 1000 and his intention is to free them and pay them to work the land or let them earn their freedom but feed them. (how much does it cost to feed a slave/peasant/soldier away form home/at home?). He is looking to other sources for slaves too (alphatia?) and desires about 20,000 people in 4 years. It seems excessive but if he's got the money and the will.... My qusetion is how and what to allow/disallow. quotes like "thats what advisors are for" from him don't help, but given I would like to see him try to conquer the world I'm not going to say you can't, just this is what you can do and let him make the calls about how and when. any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. I think it's best to do whatever is "fair" for the players. If he is the only player, do what is fair and realistic and don't worry about whether he takes over the world. I think players expect you to be realistic. You can't just stop him cause you're worried it'll throw the game off. But on the other hand, don't make it easy for him. Make it realistic. It really isn't that easy to organize and keep a country. Money problems, if he's not good to the people there are riots, etc. Surrounding areas may not like this idea and force him to sign a treaty, etc. Just try to think of what's realistic in his situation. Since you mention above that this character has a ton of money (perhaps even too much), this seems like a good way to relieve him of some of it. Advisors do cost money, and the better the advisor, the more money they cost. If there are some aspects of dominion ruling that your player does not want to deal with then I say that's fine. Let him hire advisors. This gives you, as the DM, several opportunities. 1) As I said before, advisors cost money. This is a good way for you to lighten the character's purse strings. 2) Advisors are NPCs with their own goals (or they should be). Not all will be out for the best interests of the character. In fact, I would suggest that if the player wants to leave his dominion in the hands of his advisors, that a couple of things could happen. 2a) The advisors slowly drain away resources (and the profit from those resources) to fill thier own coffers. This will eventually result in the weakening of the dominion, and if the PC doesn't take notice and do something about it, well then... 2b) The advisors grow to like all of the power that the PC gives them...in fact they want more. The PC could be looking at several very dangerous coups...especially if he has hired powerful advisors. 3) Advisors can make mistakes. Just because the DM plays them doesn't make them infalible. In fact the opposite should be true. Bad advisors can be just as damaging to a nation as corrupt advisors. 4) Advisors still need guidance. If the PC doesn't want to deal with the mundane aspects of dominion rule, well that's fine. But he still needs to deal with the people who take care of such things. Unless of course, he hires advisors to advise his advisors...but this situation will quickly lead to either #2 or #3 above. Hope that this helps a bit. There are a few more things that I wanted to comment on, but I'll save those for later. John ===== Rule #46. If an advisor says to me "My liege, he is but one man. I doubt that any one person would be able to buy 20,000 + slaves in one place (even over a period of 4 years). If the PC wants this many slaves, then they would have to work for it. Thyatis is a good place to get a good number of slaves, as are various kingdoms in Alphatia (pre WotI of course). I would also make the PC travel to Sind/Jiabul (sp?), the Hinterlands, (the Black Eagle Barony if he wants to deal with such people), and a couple of nations on the Savage Coast. I'm sure you can think of a couple more sources of slaves as well (and I'm sure we've talked about this on the MML before). Now to gather and transport all of these slaves to Norwald in 4 years is going to take more than a couple of ships (or more than 4 years). The PC may be able to hire some slaver ships for a fraction of the price of buying and crewing the ships himself), but transport to Norwald will still be very expensive. And needless to say, that slave mortality on such ships will be quite high. Not all of the slaves that he buys will survive the trip. The second problem is that the PC is creating a country where the population is predominated by slaves. How many people will he need to keep these slaves under control. My guess is that he won't have enough men for the job, and will therefore have to hire the services of various mercenaries (more gold from his pockets). Mercenaries aren't the most loyal people either, so he'll have to keep an eye on them as they keep an eye on his slaves. And not only does he have to transport his slaves, but he has to transport everyone else - merchants, soldiers, mercenaries, and the mountian of advisors that he'll need to keep this opperation going. He needs more ships, and needs to spend more gold. Freeing the slaves solves this problem, but creates another (well several others). Free people might be willing to stay in the country. Then again, they might not. Depending upon how they were transported to Norwald, the freed slaves might feel like they owe their savior their respected lives. However if they were transported on tightly packed slave ships, then I doubt they would hold any love for their 'savior' at all. Many freed slaves may want to travel back to their home countries. Remember that many slaves are taken in time of war or the victims of press gangs, etc..., so if slaves are bought in Jiabul, then freed in Norwald, they may wish to return to whatever nation they were taken from (probably somewhere in Sind). Being in Norwald will make this difficult at best, but some would manage. So here is yet another way that your PC will lose some people. Another problem is that slave or freemen, people from such diverse backgrounds may not get along with one another. And of course, Norwald is a wild place. Even after the Thy/Alpher colonization attempts, but especially before. I'd say that your PC will need quite a sizeable force of troops to keep 20,000 people safe while they till the fields. Not to mention that he'll probably have to clear some forested areas before he has any fields. Then there are clans of kobolds and trolls, and who knows whatever else...the list goes on and on. How much money did you say your PC had, because I see it dwindling rapidly once he begins this project... Now, just so he won't be too discouraged by these porspects, I'll make a couple of suggestions. The first group that goes to Norwald should consist of 1000 or so slaves (perhaps all he can buy in Thyatis) a large force of soldiers (I'd say 1000 to 3000 in order to keep everyone safe), and as many craftsmen that the PC can find and convince to come with him (this number could reach up to 1000 as well - he may wish to free any slaves who have the requisite skills). Once in Norwald he can begin to clear some land for farming. The wood that is cut down can then be used to make more ships. Food and supplies will need to be shipped in, and the craftsmen will need to be paid handsomely (they'll charge more for up and moving to Norwald), but the PC may be able to recover some costs by selling off some of the ships he makes (there are always wars going on somewhere). During the subsequent years his slaves may be able to suppliment their food and supply needs but I don't think they will become fully self sufficient for at least 10 to 20 years. I think I've mentioned it before, but check out the Adventure - Needle (I11 IIRC) it's posted on WotC's web site. I've modified it for use in the Hinterlands, but pre-colonial Norwald will fit the bill just as easily. Let us know how it turns out. John ===== Rule #46. Now it's a 51 day trip at 60 miles a day (3096mi distance) so about 120 days for a round trip. This means about 1 1/2 trips could be made a year. At the end of about 150 days you can have 1500 new people in norworld from karameikos for the winter. Given you don't raise crops in winter they build ships. spring you plant crops sail ships south, get more people, sail north, new arivals stay, sail south. build more ships in winter, ships sail south and north (one group from each) and continue to ammass population until desired point. While amassing population most non-food related goods are imported and thus most of the population works the land allowing for a greater proportion of excess food then normal medieval civilization. That food then supports the next lot of migrants while they grow their first crops. Thus only the first lot of migrants must have food imported. once a reasonable population is reached then you start encouraging/importing craftspeople to make the comunities self sufficient. The limit on people is how many you can afford to support that are not self sufficient. > The second problem is that the PC is creating a > country where the population is > predominated by slaves. Thats why he wanted them from the same place and if there is a thyatian flavour other cultures is not so much an issue. It is more an issue when the culture is repressed rather then intergrated and there is freedom and a good life has to beat slavery. > And of course, Norwald is a wild place. In fact, except for mentioning them as the evil to be fought against in the Church of Thyatis, their worship is a crime punishable by death in the Empire of Thyatis and most other nations. The clergy of the Church of Thyatis is composed mainly of clerics. Most are pantheists, but philosophers of law and neutrality are also common. Only a few chaos philosophers are present among the hierarchy. Priests (and other specialty priests) are often in charge of the ceremonies pertaining to their particular Immortal. Of course, only priests of the Immortals mentioned above, minus Priests of Alphaks and Thanatos, can join the clergy. Even non-priests (that is, normal humans) can join the order and give ceremonies to the masses. The temples of the Church of Thyatis tend to be grand buildings since they must serve as a place of worship for many Immortals. Most can seat a couple hundred spectators during their ceremonies. They also have several other chambers that serve as shrines for each particular Immortal. Finally, chambers in the back serve as barracks for the clergy, as well as meeting rooms for discussions and planning. Organization All clergy of the Church of Thyatis start at the rank of initiate. Their duties include serving as messengers, preparing the temples for the ceremonies, and generally acting as servants for the higher-ranking clergy. It is a life of studying and classes in the temple libraries followed by hard work and menial chores. An initiate who has served well for three years [and about 3rd level. Ed.] attains the rank of priest. It is the priests of the religion who actually give the ceremonies to the people of the Thyatian Empire. Those of priest rank are also sent out on adventures to discover secrets, amass wealth for the order, and convert other cultures to their way. A priest who performs admirably for at least 5 years [and around level 7 if possessing a character class. Ed.] becomes a curate. Curates are in charge of deciding exactly what the topics of each ceremony are to be, as well as plan what enlightenment will be taught to the people. There is a curate in charge of the ceremonies for each Immortal of the pantheon. That is, in each temple, there is one curate for Asterius, another for Diulanna, and so on. This is the highest rank any Priest (or other specialty priest) can attain within the clergy since their point of view is limited to those of their Immortal. Finally, in charge of the entire temple is a bishop [they are usually around 9th level. Ed.]. He runs the place and has final say on what will or will not be accepted within his building. Normal humans who do not posses any divine granted powers cannot proceed above the rank of bishop. In charge of several temples in entire areas-usually a complete dominion-are the patriarch and matriarch. Only Clerics [of 13th level or higher. Ed.] can attain this rank, as only they can remain unbiased when deciding how each Immortal is to be worshipped. These patriarchs advise rulers on matters of the church and can exert a lot of political power in their region. There is no rank above patriarch in the Church of Thyatis. As such, all the patriarchs of the order gather annually in Thyatis City to discuss and vote on the future of their religion. Traditionally, the patriarch of Thyatis City has the power to veto any vote passed by this assembly, and in case of ties, holds the deciding vote. Dogma The philosophies of the Church of Thyatis hold that all acts performed by mortals are recorded by the Immortals above and will be used to judge them when they pass into the afterlife. The spirits of the dead will belong to the Immortal he or she most resembled in life and will wind up serving eternity in the Outer Plane of their Immortal. This is why they describe the temperaments and homes of Alphaks and Thanatos; by seeing what awaits those of evil alignment, they hope they will change their ways. As such, good deeds will be rewarded with good deeds in the afterlife, just as bad deeds will be paid back with bad deeds. The priests cheerfully describe the purpose, alignment, and desires of all the Thyatian Immortals so that the citizens of Thyatis can make their own choices of which Immortal to hold to heart and where they want to go when they die. Of course, since Thyatians are militant people, the Immortals Vanya, Thor, and Diulanna often receive more than their fair share of attention. Initiates spend several hours a day studying everything known on the entire Pantheon. Upon reaching the rank of priests, they are charged with spreading this knowledge to the people of Thyatis and the rest of Mystara. Most prefer to have the people come to them in their daily ceremonies at the temples, but a few adventure out into the world and try to convert other cultures. Although not specifically stated in their doctrines, the Church of Thyatis also promotes the belief that Thyatians are the best people in the world and that all other cultures should join the empire and become full-fledged Thyatians. Day-to-Day Activities The clergy of the Church of Thyatis can often be seen roaming the streets of major Thyatian cities, preaching about making choices for one's afterlife. Those who seem curious about their speeches are often referred to one of the temples of the order. Every day, at noon, ceremonies are held in the various temples of the religion. Each ceremony starts with a brief talk about all the Immortals, then proceeds onto the main topic of the day that usually deals with one Immortal in particular. The subject for the day is determined by the bishop, usually in conjunction with his curates. Since there are currently 12 Immortals in the pantheon (not including Alphaks or Thanatos), a common theme is to have an "Immortal of the month," thereby teaching the philosophies of one Immortal for a month, then changing to another at the arrival of the new moon. Still, some bishops have other complicated schedules dividing the days evenly throughout the year in a pattern only they can see. Finally, the Temple of Thyatis often gives special rites when a Thyatian child is born, blessing her and asking the Immortals to look after her as she grows up. The clergy members also take care of marriage ceremonies and divorce throughout the Thyatian Empire. Holy Days and Important Ceremonies Up until recently, the Church of Thyatis did not have any major holy days. Now, however, Wrath of the Immortals Day (Nuwmont 15th) is considered to be sacred. This day celebrates the fact that the Thyatian Pantheon proved to the world that Thyatians are the favored people of the Immortals by destroying the continent of Alphatia. The logic goes that since Thyatians are the favored people, then the Church of Thyatis must be the favored religion of the world. Wrath of the Immortals Day started in AC 1010 as a workers' holiday but has since become a full-fledge religious event. On Flaurmont 1, priests give a special ceremony celebrating the Day of Freedom for those Thyatian youths who have turned 21 and are now "free" from their parents' whims. Other days are considered important, but only to a particular Immortal, and not the entire pantheon. Because of this, they are not considered religious holy days, but are usually celebrated by the bishops of the temples anyway. These days include the Start of Shipping Season (Va. 23, Protius), The Day of Valerias (Fe. 15, Valerias), Vanya's Day (Sv. 8, Vanya), and Protius's Day (Ei. 22, Protius), as well as several others. Major Centers of Worship The Great Thyatian Temple, located in the estates district of Thyatis City, is an immense building which can seat almost 5,000 citizens. This marble building is crafted in the typical Thyatian style, with marble columns and a circular amphitheater-styled ceremony hall. Several other buildings are attached to this hall, including the residence of Dylan Finnson, Patriarch of Thyatis City, as well as sleeping quarters for over 250 clergy members. Several other temples (although usually much smaller) can be found throughout the city as well as every other major Thyatian city. The temples of the Pearl Islands still have a good following, while a new temple is currently being built in Selenica. Affiliated Orders A few blocks down the street from the Great Thyatian Temple, one can find the Knights of the Gold Dragon Enclave. This building houses a military order dedicated to upholding the decisions taken by the patriarchs of the Church of Thyatis. The ranks of the Knights of the Gold Dragon are composed of warriors, rogues, paladins, and crusaders. Members of this order protect the various temples of the religion, lead military expeditions as needed by the patriarchs, and roam the empire seeking to enlighten people about the choices they make in life. When not on a religious mission, this order acts as a mercenary band willing to perform any mission that doesn't go against their philosophies or the church. All applicants to the order must have both a Knight of the Gold Dragon and a clergy member of the Church of Thyatis sponsor them. Candidates are then tested, and if their combat skills are adequate [that is, if their THAC0 is 15 or better. Ed.], they are accepted into the ranks. Priestly Vestments During their everyday lives, clergy of the Church of Thyatis are permitted to wear any clothing that suits their needs. During ceremonies, however, a more formal dress code is enforced. Their ceremonial dress consists of a full-sleeved, floor-length blue robe. The coat of arms of the church is displayed prominently on the left chest. If also a member of the Knights of the Gold Dragon, their gold dragon symbol is sown unto the upper edge of the right sleeve, much as military rank insignias are often displayed. Priests of the Church of Thyatis of all ranks except initiate also carry with them a metal scepter while in ceremonial dress. The size and color of the scepter indicates the rank in the clerical hierarchy the owner is. Current Beliefs The Church of Thyatis suffered many losses during the past couple of decades. About 40 years ago, when the Grand Duchy of Karameikos separated from the empire, so to did their branch of the church (forming the Church of Karameikos). More recently, with the independence of Ochalea, the Pearl Islands, Helskir, and the Grand Duchy of Westrourke, the patriarchs fear the complete destruction of their religion, along with the empire. Despite their fears, the Church of Thyatis remains strong in the Pearl Islands, Helskir and Westrourke. Only Ochalea has completely abandoned the tenets of the church. The church has also made grounds recently. For the past 20 years, they have made inroads into the Jungle Coast, converting many of the hinterland barbarians to their beliefs. The Church of Thyatis even went as far as accepting Diulanna, their Immortal, into the Thyatian pantheon; after all, they are Thyatians now, aren't they. But the church seeks to expand further. At the moment, they are slowly building temples within the nation of Darokin, using the city of Selenica as their main base of operations. Rumors also claim that the church is seeking to reabsorb the Church of Karameikos into their fold. As another means of regaining worshipers, the Church of Thyatis has seriously started debating about holy days, something that has until very recently never crossed their minds. Wrath of the Immortals Day is one such idea. At the moment, they are also debating on whether or not to make Fyrmont 19 "The Visit" an official holy day. This day would mark the discovery of the "Footprint of the Immortal" found in the Altan Tepes back in AC 1010, showing the world that the Immortals actually visited the Empire of Thyatis. Making the site into official holy ground is also high on its priority list. Taking care of dominion subjects even with advisors, is never easy. Dominion rule does tend to move the focus of the game more to the political/military aspects, but that opens up a whole other world of adventuring potential. There is much more at stake if a PCs lands, castle, etc. are threatened. Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 20:24:53 -0800 From: Chris Furneaux Subject: expansion of dominions one of my players goal is for his PC's to rule the world. No particular reason why, I think he's just on a power trip. What level is he? Sounds like a possible quest for Immortality. 2 mil doesn't sound that unreasonable to accumulate over a long and fruitful adventuring career. In fact, one of my PCs owes Minrothad 2 mil (that he does NOT have) for renting a very large fleet of ships. There are many ways he can go through that money really quick running a dominion. I would say to keep a careful record of the money and let him start spending it. [snipped] Lately he has been turning his attention to norworld. This is interesting because the year is only AC984, a year before alphaitia starts showing interest in colinization of norworld and eight years before erical becomes king (erical is about 12 years old). It is posible that his colinization encourages alphatias interest. My campaign is based in Norwold, using the guidelines in CM1. Have him select a location, determine what resources are there and have him start clearing the land. The work will not be free, since even if the peasants are being given the land, there will be costs for food, tools, temporary shelters, etc. Have him deal with various hazards and set backs that might occur due to local monsters, bad weather, dissension between settlers, etc. I use a modified version of the dominion rules in the RC to calc. the dominion income. Some of it comes from CoM (World Builder's Guide) and some FMC based on what works for me. For a single 24 mile hex it would be as follows: Find the # of peasant families Find the value of the resources in that hex (1=vegetable, 2=animal, 3=mineral). Let him determine a tax rate (0-2.5 gp/month, w. 1.5 being standard) A tax rate of 2.5 will take all of a families extra gp for that month. All the rest will be needed for food. Higher tax rates significantly higher than 1.5 (30% of income, includes 10% tithe to local clerics) will result in penalties on confidence checks, which could lead to revolt. Income for that hex = # families X (resource value + tax rate) For example, a dominion of 1000 families (5000 people) with 3 resources (lumber(1), farming(1), and fishing(2)) and the std tax rate (1.5) would yield: 1000 X 5.5 = 5500 gp/month 10% would need to be tithed to a clergy (even if not local) or clerics will not serve there. Alternatively, the price for a chaplain could increase greatly if the PC refused to tithe. Another 20% would got to his liege. If he sets up the dominion w/o a liege then he is much more vulnerable to foreign attacks, as he is under no ones protection. That would be the PCs choice. Then come all of the otehr expenses of the military. Use the mercenary soldier costs in the RC. I consider these to be standard military pay. Officers cost their level X base pay. Training (used to calc the BR for war machine) costs double, as does wartime duty. Advisors and skilled servants are also quite expensive. Once he has hired the necessary baliffs, sheriffs, provosts, magistrates, a magist, chaplain, guard capt., and all the other stuff you need, he won't have much left to put in the treasury, and might even end up losing a good amount of that 2 mil getting the place up and running. I figure out the economic status of each dominion once per campaign year by multiplying the monthly figure by 12. Believe me, economics are a big limitation on what they can and can't do. Army sizes are limited by money. Then he'll want a navy or an aerial force. One PC had a skyship damaged in a war and he does not have the coin to repair it so its grounded. I have all of the info for each dominion and some NPC dominions set up on Excel spreadsheets that do all the calculations for me. It works real well. And these dominions are all several hexes in size. One PC is a Marquis, with 4 barons under him, which can get tricky. This is actually another factor to consider, since as his dominion grows, he will need more trusted followers to govern the more outlying areas. If not, bandits may raid or various local pretenders may come to power. Eventually, some of these people could betray him, mismanage the dominion, etc. Another useful source to check out is CM2. It has some good info on dominions that I used as my starting point. If a diaster strikes the land (natural, magical, invasion, plague, you name it), It will cost money to replace what is destroyed. If 20% of the people are lost in a disaster, then that will be 20% less income. Let him try it! Figure the cost for each slave and let him pay the price. Most of them will be unskilled and that could come back to haunt him. Some rules for food costs and such can be found in the Minrothad GAZ (for sailors' rations, etc.). Building a suitable stronghold could easily use 500,000 gp. If he only builds a simple keep, it might not be sufficient to protect the dominion. If his dominion starts to thrive, others will be attracted to the area to carve out their own, competing lands. I would *NOT* use the dominion growth rates suggested in the rules or the dominion will grow way too fast. I used them at first but then had to modify the population growth to remain plausible. I have a table at home that I could dig up on pop. growth. If he wants the dominion to grow faster and he keeps buying more slaves, then have some repurcussions. Where are all of the slaves from? Do they want to go to this guys dominion? Would they all just "get along"? Someone could look into why he was buying so many slaves and try to take advantage of, or sabotage his plans. So, let him try it, but don't make it easy! Throw as many hurdles as you can think of at him from the mundane to the completely insane! It will probably take many years before he has a dominion equal to any of the GAZ nations (if he's lucky!). And then he would have to overcome those lands. It sounds like an interesting idea that could keep you playing for a LONG time. Good luck with it. My qusetion is how and what to allow/disallow. quotes like "thats what advisors are for" from him don't help, but given I would like to see him try to conquer the world I'm not going to say you can't, just this is what you can do and let him make the calls about how and when. any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. Chris. Hope some of this helps. I'll be off list (and off e-mail) until after Christmas but I can answer any questions or let you check out some of my dominion info then.
