Important Figures: Wymer Chitclan, King of Vixen Description: Northernmost kingdom of Nentsun, Vixen stretches all along the sea, and 4 of the 10 Devices are located here. However, although they prevent the sea from freezing for most of the winter, fishing is not a favourite activity of the Vixenians. Vixen is heavily populated by humans. The Vixenians are considered the most nationalist and arrogant of the Inner Circle. They regard the Outer Circles population as little more than barbarians, and all the other nations of the Inner Circle are also considered inferior in culture and civilization. However, the Vixenians are also the most succesful of the nations of Nentsun, so they are partly justified in their assertions: with the help of the devices they have created an agricoltural heaven, and they work hard for the country. The Vixenians have a complex political organization, with a main division of the population in three activity groups: philosophers, among whom the king is chosen, and who rule the country, fighters, who act as police and army, and working men, who are mainly employed in farming activities. Vixen is a meritocracy: when a child becomes twelve, it is examined by a commission of members of the three groups, that value what the child will become- there is no nobility, and the status of its parents is ignored. Then the child is sent to school until twentyone, when he becomes an adult and begins to work in his group. Although the philosophers and soldiers seem to be above the working men in consideration, they live harder lives, as they are not allowed to have any personal possession, and suffer great restrictions to their personal freedoms. Intermarriage between the groups is allowed and encouraged. The few rakastas who live in Vixen are mercenaries and their families. There are not big cities in Vixen. The population is distributed quite regularly throughout the land. Among the few cities is the capital city of Vixen (pop. 18,000), distant about three kilometers from the original city of the same name, now just ruines since the war of 374-411 AC. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 18:09:40 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Andr=E9s_Piquer_Otero?= Subject: Re: Poll: what is your favourite nation? I must protest that the votes of most Alphatians were not counted because they didn't make it from the Hollow World in time. I suspect Heldannic influence here, there were Heldannic Warbirds seen at the North Polar opening at that time.... That is not the case, I assure you, Eric: I received about 11,000 mails, although we are only 251. About 300 came from each one of the split personalities of the Stalker. Mortus pretended to have all his undead voting too, and James sent me three mails (one for James, one for Porphy, and one for the Evil Genius). Those who voted Alphatia insisted upon me considering their votes equal to two of the others, as they are better than the rest, while several Glantrians refused to vote because I accepted votes from others than wizards. And then I received votes from a lot of dentists, a category that is not allowed on the list. And a lot of dead people seemed to vote, too. So the problem is not that there are few voters...rather that there are too many people who are not allowed to, and too few votes from the MML members! 8-) Iulius Sergius Scaevola Captain of the XXth Cohort Port Lucinius, Thyatis ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 11:49:14 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: John Calvin Subject: Re: expansion of dominions (long) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii >> > Now to gather and > transport all of these slaves to Norwald in 4 > years is going to take more than a couple of ships > (or more than 4 years). aproximately 200 transported per load times 3 ships = 600 people/load + 300 crew. Now it's a 51 day trip at 60 miles a day (3096mi distance) so about 120 days for a round trip. This means about 1 1/2 trips could be made a year. At the end of about 150 days you can have 1500 new people in norworld from karameikos for the winter. << Admittedly I didn't do the calculations up front, but this seems to be a very optimistic appraisal of the situation. What are the waters like in Norwald during the winter? Do they get choppy? or full of ice? I don't know. Perhaps someone else on the list can enlighten us. I always assumed that the waters that far north would become more dangerous to travel through during certian times of the year, but I could be wrong. I agree that at least one round trip per year is feasable, but I'm just not sure about the rest. >> Given you don't raise crops in winter they build ships. spring you plant crops sail ships south, get more people, sail north, new arivals stay, sail south. build more ships in winter, ships sail south and north (one group from each) and continue to ammass population until desired point. While amassing population most non-food related goods are imported and thus most of the population works the land allowing for a greater proportion of excess food then normal medieval civilization. << In theory this sounds fine. In practice I'm not sure it would work, especially in higher lattitudes like Norwald (where the winters are harsher, and the growing season is shorter). It's going to be hard raising enough crops to support 20,000 people. I agree that folks would do some ship building, but again I'm not quite sure how the weather up there will affect this. How hard is it to work with wood in freesing temperatures? Not sure. My personal feeling is that it would be harder than normal, but once again I don't know much about the subject. Perhaps someone else could pop in here? >> That food then supports the next lot of migrants while they grow their first crops. Thus only the first lot of migrants must have food imported. once a reasonable population is reached then you start encouraging/importing craftspeople to make the comunities self sufficient. The limit on people is how many you can afford to support that are not self sufficient. << The theory is sound, but once again I'm not sure that in practice it would work. First of all it assumes that the colonists find optimal conditions when they arrive. >> > The second problem is that the PC is creating a > country where the population is > predominated by slaves. The overloard M-U owns most of the farming population << Yes, but there are thousands of years of culture to back this up. The Alphers started out as a civ with nearly 100% of its pop being magic users. Once on Mystara, the % of magic users declined, but the concept of magic user's being the highest form of life (and thus the only ones fit to rule) did not. I'm over simplifying here of course (and I really don't want to provoke another of these discussions at this time - although the list is kinda dead right now...no, no, I don't want to get into that). Anyway, I guess that my point is, yeah it's doable, but does the PC have the power to back it up and sustain it? Mt guess is that he will need a lot of power behind him in order to pull this off (and that kind of power might not like having to share the world with the PC). So he's created a sort of catch 22, if you will. 1) he wants to rule the world. 2) In order to do so he has to have lots of powerful people working for him...taking orders from him (and not disobeying him). 3) Powerful people seldom like the situation described in #2. This system works in Alphatia, yes. But does any one mage run the country? No. >> > Another problem is that slave or freemen, people > from such diverse backgrounds may not > get along with one another. Thats why he wanted them from the same place and if there is a thyatian flavour other cultures is not so much an issue. It is more an issue when the culture is repressed rather then intergrated and there is freedom and a good life has to beat slavery. << >> > And of course, Norwald is a wild place. Yep, initially using troops from his other dominion, but eventially hireing more (after all that is the main reason he's doing this, for an army to start his "world conquest" scheme. << Ahhh...this raises another interesting question. Your PC is basically abandoning his old dominion for a new one in Norwald, but is drawing on the resources of the old dominion to finance the creation of the new dominion. Watching two dominions is a tad bit harder than presiding over just one, especially given the distance between them. How will the PC prevent troubles from arising in Kara while he is out creating a Norwald domain...or will he just pull a Stephen? >> > During the subsequent years his slaves may be able > to suppliment their food and supply > needs but I don't think they will become fully self > sufficient for at least 10 to 20 How do you figure that. my guess would be 5-10 years but it's an investment that will pay off (with any luck) in the long run and in a world with potions of longevity.... << It might pay off in the long run for whoever is running the show, yes. Not for the poor slobs tilling the fields however ;). I figure 10 to 20 years because Norwald is hardly what you would consider to be optimal land for farming. I'm also considering that the PC might run into problems that could slow or prevent the growth of crops (ie roving tribes of kobolds who raid and burn fields, trolls who eat farmers, etc... >> > years. I think I've mentioned it before, but check > out the Adventure - Needle (I11 IIRC) got it, but what for exactly, the encounters whan they land or....? << I was thinking land encounters. You might be able to build up the various 'froggy' cultures into quite a threat for the PC to deal with. Anyway, sounds like you're going to be having a lot of fun pretty soon. Kinda makes me wish I was running a campaign right now... John ===== Rule #46. If an advisor says to me "My liege, he is but one man. (naturally occurring) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boldavian Line Description: The Boldavian bloodline is a powerful but not widely known one, due to the strict enforcement of the Boldavian Vampires' Law by Prince Morphail. Few Boldavian vampires go on a killer rampage like those of other lines, and most are powerful wizards, often necromancers. Creation: This line was created by the Immortal Alphaks in AC 720. It is composed by the family of the Dark Prince, Morphail of Boldavia, and by the nobles of his house. A few "renegade" vampires can be found in the westernmost reaches of the Ethengar Khanate. Progenitor: Morphail Gorevitch-Woszlany is the progenitor of this vampiric line. Type of Vampire: Vampire and Nosferatu. Powers: Shapechange in grey fox form; Innate Magic (Necromantic & Elemental Fire); Fire resistance. Known members: The whole Boldavian nobility and King Thar. References: Gaz3; Gaz10. Taymoran Line Description: The Taymoran bloodline comprises the remnants of the long lost Taymoran Empire. Few Taymorans, if any, survive today, but those who do are masters of the undead and of necromantic magic, as befits to the followers of Nyx. Creation: This bloodline was the outcome of the dark necromantic experiments of the Kings of Taymora, and their bound with the Immortal Nyx. The Taymoran Nosferatu reached their maximum diffusion and power during the Taymoran age, but were mostly destroyed during the cataclism that marked the end of the Taymoran Empire. Progenitor: Unknown. Type of Vampire: Nosferatu. Powers: Cast spell of the lycanthropic sphere as 1 level lower (power lost in time); Undead Master; Innate Magic (Necromancy & Conjuration). Known Members: None. References: Mystaros' History of the Taymoran Empire; The Complete Mystaran Timeline. Koriszegy Line Description: Since the bloodline's progenitor, Koriszegy, cannot leave his keep near the Radlebb Woods, most Koriszegy vampires are free, and they make up a large portion of the vampiric population of Traladara and Southern Darokin. This bloodline is growing faster than any other. Many young vampires come from this bloodline, and their unlife is often quite short, for most of them suffer from the same "madness" as their progenitor. Creation: This line is the result of the failed attempt of the last Lord Koriszegy to forge an alliance with dark forces, supposedly Entropic Immortals or Fiends. Progenitor: Lord Koriszegy, the mad vampire, is the ancestor of all of these vampires. Type of Vampire: Vampire. Powers: Create minor undead (Ghoul); Vampiric Rage; Bloodlust. Known Members: Koriszegy, Rosentus and Redtooth. References: Gaz1; Gaz6. Old Traldaran Line Description: This was the most common line before the "Dark Years" (AC 700 - AC 800) which led to the transition to undeath and to the defeat of both Morphail Gorevitch-Woszlany and the last of the Koriszegy, and to the creation of the "new" Traladaran lines. The Old Traladaran line is also common in the City-States of the Gulf of Hule, and in the Olgarian lands. Some Nosferatu of this line are also present in Boldavia and in the Flying City of Serraine. The Old Traladarans are intelligent, charming and adept at cloaking their undead nature, and are among the most sociable nosferatu. Many of them also wield wizardly or bardic magic. Creation: This bloodline derives from a less powerful variant of the Alphatian strain. Being was physically inferior to their "relatives", those nosferatu were forced to leave the better hunting grounds, but their adaptability made them more successful outside their native land. After the purges brought on by the Alphatian Grand Council and the more advanced nations of the Known World, the nosferatu's area of influence was reduced to the less civilized lands, the dark forests of Traladara. Progenitor: Unknown. Type of Vampire: Nosferatu. Powers: Charming Blood; Charm while Gaseous; Innate Magic (Enchantment and Illusion). Known Members: Zemiros Sulescu, Aden III Anismont of Darokin, Miroslav Gorevitch-Stekel and Andriy Stekel. References: Gaz1; PC4; The Glantrian Interactive Map. Genalleth Line Description: These vampires have been created to serve as shock troops for the Necromancers of the Denagothian Plateau, and are therefore fearsome fighters. From their elven nature, they keep an affinity for enchantment magic. Creation: This bloodline was created during the wars between Wendar and Essuria, by the Essurian Necromancers. The Immortal Nyx interfered with the Necromancers' works, and the attempt to create a Greater Wyrd actually brought to a full elven Vampire, Sylarion. Progenitor: Sylarion, the elven Vampire, is the firstborn of this line. Type of Vampire: Elven Vampire. Powers: Bloodlust; Vampiric Rage; Sunlight Resistance; Innate Magic (Enchantment, Alteration & Divination). Known Members: Sylarion and the Alfheim crusaders. References: Mystaran Almanac, AC1016. Alphatian Line Description: Physically and magically powerful, these vampires enjoy an uncommon frequency of salient abilities. Their command of the elemental forces is strong, and their curse is easily transmitted, through most body fluids. Creation: This line was created by rogue Alphatian wizards, trying to create a superhuman Alphatian race. Its members mostly reside in Limn and Blackheart. Progenitor: Unknown. Type of Vampire: Vampire. Powers: Innate Magic (Elemental Air, Invocation & Abjuration); Transport; Increased Regeneration; Vampiric Saliva. Known Members: Many officers of the Limn army. References: The Complete Mystaran Timeline. Velyan Description: an uncommon breed of marine bloodsuckers, the Velya are rare, and reproduce at a slow rate. However, they can create or control powerful minions, including wights and sharks. Creation: a forgotten Immortal cursed some surface dwelling people with this affliction. The Velyan line is small, but its members are all rather powerful and ancient. This line is the oldest underwater bloodline, and it is thought that Ssaaskas was originally a Velyan Vampire. Progenitor: Unknown. Type of Vampire: Velya. A secondary form is the Swamp Velya. Powers: shapechange (shark, manta, water current, human), resist flowing water, charming song, create wights. No normal reproduction (only maledictive or bride). Known members: Hadric of Colhador. References: MC Mystara Appendix, Velya; module X7. Devilfish Line Description: Like all underwater bloodlines, devilfish vampires have different vulnerabilities and immunities than the common land vampires. Most vampures of this bloodline are part of the devilfish religious hierarchy, and display powerful priestly magic. Creation: The devilfish have a bloodline of vampires of their own, which includes all of the elder devilfish. This bloodline was created by Saasskas, the Immortal patroness of the devilfish race, who was a vampire itself, having been infected by blood transfusion by a Velya. A few humans followers of Saasskas from the Rajahstan of Sind have been infected with the disease. Progenitor: Saasskas is supposed to have been the first devilfish vampire. Type of Vampire: (Devilfish) Vampire. Powers: Not destroyed by immersion in water. Shapechange in devilfish form only. Summons devilfish and similar creatures only. Known Members: None. References: D&D Master Set; "Saasskas the Destroyer", by Aaron Novak. Aelian Line Description: Little is known of these nosferatu, who can easily pass as humans, and don't feed on the citizen of Aelios. However, they all have priestly powers from their goddess Talitha. Creation: This line has been created by the Immortal Talitha. All of its members are Nosferatu Priests of Talitha. The line is found only among the high clergy of Talitha in Aelios, a Milenian City-State in the Addakian Sound. Progenitor: Cassandra, first High Priestess of Talitha, was the first of this bloodline. Type of Vampire: Nosferatu (Priest). Powers: This bloodline never displays Skin Tone or Bloodlust. Innate Magic (Illusion & Enchantment). Known Members: Porophylle & the High Clergy of Talitha in Aelios. References: "The City-State of Aelios", by Alex Benson, in "The DM's Guide to Davania". Pojaaran Line Description: This line exists throughout Norwold and in the North-Western Wastelands. It is composed by followers of Thanatos who left the crumpling Taymoran Empire following their leader, Luvarshalla. They are easily recognised, as their flesh shows a deadly pallor, and the curse of Nyx makes them uglier as they age. Their powerful illusions can cover this marks, anyway. Creation: Taymoran Nosferatu corrupted by Thanatos were transformed into vampires near modern Kaarjala. Progenitor: Luvarshalla (known as Lovaara). Type of Vampire: Vampire. Powers: Skin Tone, always. Charisma reduced as Witches. Innate Magic (Necromancy, Illusion, Enchantment & Alteration). Known Members: Lovaara. References: "Kaarjala, Land of the Saamari", by James Mishler. Hulean Line Description: These nosferatu have been created to serve the Master of Hule as assassins and spies. Their strenght lies in knowledge and misdirection, and their powers serve them well. Creation: The Hulean Line derives directly from the Master of Hule's Avatar, a Nosferatu created by the Immortal Loki. Progenitor: Hosadus. Type of Vampire: Nosferatu. Powers: Innate Magic (Divination & Sphere of Chaos). Known Members: Hosadus and other Hulean Nosferatu. References: "Hosadus", by James Mishler. Arachnidaean Line Description: These unusual vampires are able to take the form of large spiders, much like the aranea. They act as the agents of Arachne Prime in Thotia. Creation: Created by Arachne Prime, the Night Spider, Planar Spider Immortal. Progenitor: Queen Aketheti of Thotia. Type of Vampire: Vampire. Powers: Spider form, Webspinning, Innate Magic (Spheres: Astral, Sun reversed). Known Members: Queen Aketheti of Thotia, Ramenhotep X. References: M5 Talons of the Night. Minor bloodlines Creation & Description: These are bloodlines of "natural" vampires. The vampires and nosferatu created when someone dies of the blood drain of a Vampire Bat or Vampire Rose are less powerful than those created by the Immortals or by wizardly magic. They often suffer of the following disadvantages: Skin Tone; Bloodlust; Increased Dietary Requirement. Ubour Bloodline Vampire Bat Bloodline Vampire Rose Bloodline Juniper Bloodsucker Line Ubour Line Creation: This uncommon strand of vampires exists apparently only in the Converted Lands of Hule. Only the Greater Ubour can be considered a vampire. Progenitor: unknown. Type of Vampire: Ubour (Greater). Powers: Electrical spark; Cat form; Summon Cat Ubours. Known Member: none. The powers come mostly from Ravenloft (Van Richten's Monster Hunter's Compendium, Vol. I), though some are just translations in terms of salient abilities of different kind of vampiric creatures (Velya, for example are just too different from the usual vampires). Other are new, due to unusual properties of some bloodlines (like the Charisma loss of the Pojaarans). > i like the breakdown into bloodlines. > i may well use a lot of this info in my campaign if i ever get it started > again. > well done. I suppose that the PWA is to be followed, here, considering that it was published later and that it covers at least a little Minaea. So I would say pined trees. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I too would like to say Merry Christmas to everyone on the MML. And in keeping with the traditions, I would like to follow the example that Agathokles set before us... I've been working hard on the MA 1017 (due out in a week or so) in my spare time recently (when not actually playing role-playing games!), so I've had little time to prepare. The following is just a little something I've worked on for a few hours... A story I've chosen to call 'Dark Revelations' (Just couldn't think of a better title at the moment). But feel free to comment anyway if you bother to read through it. :) MERRY CHRISTMAS to all on the MML! --- The cold winds of the Kerothar Mountains tore themselves against Kroth's face. He shivered slightly, but still found that odd familiar freedom in the feeling - as a dwarf he had always found the mountains enticing, even if they threatened his very life. He looked around at his companions and almost shook his head with frustration. An elf and three humans... how had he ever ended up with such a group of people? At first he had naturally tought that Litharial, the elf, would be the worst to be around, and he had almost departed the group when he had realized that he, Kroth, son of Groth, would have to travel with an elf... As time had passed, he had found, however, that the elf was the least annoying of his companions. He didn't really mind Amanara, the young human warrior, but she did have that submissive nature of Alphatian commoners that he so detested. It was almost worse than the smug, superior nature of Colmondes, their cleric and leader and so an aristocrat in these Alphatian lands. And then there was that youth of a wizard... a boy really - he couldn't be older than fourteen years or so if Kroth was any judge of human age, yet Amanara bowed to his every whim too, just because he could cast a few spells. Pathetic! What really annoyed him about the boy, though, was how he was so utterly blind to all this - he took it all for granted and didn't even realize that things should be different. The Alphatians sure were a strange people! Kroth wondered for a while why the dwarves had settled here some odd four decades or so ago, but then he already knew the answer; as much as he, or other dwarves for that matter, might have disliked the Alphatians, they did share the dwarves' love of beautiful craftmanship... They had come to these mountains in southern Frisland because Colmondes had been ordered here by his 'glorious order of Razud' to find a 'most valuable relic' - probably some worthless trinket! Still, they paid well, and since the dwarves of Stoutfellow hadn't extended their kingdom so far north, they were likely to find mostly orcs here. And Kroth didn't mind busting a few orcish heads for the gold. So far they had met mostly wolves and a single griffon who had been interested in their mounts, though. "There it is", he heard Colmondes say. "There is the entrance". Before them were some old ruins of a temple or some such. As they walked near, though, Kroth heard the unmistakable war cry of orcs, and he pulled out his axe - time to earn his pay! The battle was short but brutal, and the outcome was predictable. Soon after the orcs were dead. Apparently Colmondes had expected that because he never lifted a finger to help them, while Litharial, the elf, also seemed to think they weren't worth wasting spells on, since he merely shot a few arrows. One of the orcs almost got the drop on Amanara, though, when the 'mageling' as Kroth liked to call him as he knew that it annoyed Colmondes, used magic to make the wind topple the orc over... Though Kroth wouldn't admit it, he was slightly impressed - the boy was so young, yet he wielded such power? It made him wonder why he had even joined them in the first place. Amanara and Kroth himself had clearly joined for the pay, while Litharial had apparently joined just to hunt orcs and possibly find some magical treasure, and Colmondes had been ordered to by his superiors, which was probably why he had been in a bad mood throughout the trip. But the boy? He was a wizard, so he didn't need the money. That much was obvious, as he carried a Kihara, just as Colmondes did. And he was too young to hold grudges against orcs, Kroth thought. Then again, judging the ages of Alphatian humans could be deceptive; he knew that the Alphatians had spells that could alter their age, but he still couldn't imagine that anyone would choose to become quite that young, so he assumed that the boy really was as old as he seemed, which just made him reconsider his own question - why was the boy here? He hadn't really signed onto the group, just sort of started following them around, as far as he could tell. It was all most puzzling! His amazement only grew when the boy asked both him and Amanara if they were hurt, and then examined Amanara's wound and bound it... The boy sure was peculiar! At first Kroth had feared him, what with his odd tendency to suddenly show up where the others went... He had never seen the boy on a horse or other mount, so how did he travel? He had talked to Colmondes about it, but he had merely laughed at him and dismissed the matter, so eventually he had decided that if the rest of the group weren't worried about it, then he wouldn't be either. As the 'mageling' had examined Amanara and talked briefly with Kroth, Colmondes had merely walked past them as if they weren't there and examined the ruins before them. After doing so for a while, he turned to Litharial: "A little crude but durable... I'd say third dynasty architecture, yes?". Kroth could barely contain his glee at the mistake - the Alphatians might be good spellcasters, but their superior attitude and arrogance often got the better of them when they faced a problem like this where their young ages, compared to dwarves and elves, really showed, and he loved the opportunity to point out Colmondes' mistake to him. Unfortunately, Litharial beat him to it: "Judging from the basic structures, yes, but if you examine these markings closely, you'll notice the forms associated with early fourth dynasty, like here! And while these symbols seem to be associated with Razud, you'll noticed that they've been disfigured rather than worn, so... Yes, over here you can see the rest, see? Hmmm, a horned skull. That seems to indicate worship of Alphaks - we had better be careful!" Though the elf had taken away Kroth's opportunity to annoy Colmondes, he had still proven his point quite clearly, and Kroth smiled as Colmondes walked onward as he dismissingly said, "Hrmph, yes maybe... Let's continue". So they entered the ruins and saw the decay of the building. Very little was left, but Kroth still had to somehow admire the skill with which the Alphatians had built this place. It wasn't up to dwarven craftmanship, obviously, but it was still sturdy and had withstood the passage of time well. If only the Alphatians didn't have such obsessive tendencies with appearances... As they walked further, he realized that the ruin was actually built into the very side of the mountain itself, and it soon became quite dark around them... Though Kroth could see the others in the dark, he didn't much like the idea of not being able to see the floor, and he began looking through his backpack as Colmondes uttered some peculiar words behind him. Suddenly there was a light as bright as daylight with them, and as Colmondes walked silently onwards as if he hadn't noticed it himself, the light seemed to follow him. They walked for what seemed like hours in these dark corridors. At one point they found odd carvings on the walls, but they seemed incomprehensible, and later they found old, dried blood on the floor. At least that's what Kroth thought it was. As they walked further, they noticed the remains of presumably human victims on the walls. There were about twenty of them and Kroth didn't like to think of how these poor humans must have ended their days. As they looked, the corpses suddenly came to life and attacked them! Kroth's axe and the swords of both Amanara and Litharial weren't much use against these skeletons, and Kroth was a bit worried. Colmondes, however, merely held up his odd talisman and Kroth noticed that it had a strange symbol on it - it almost looked like a tree made of some sort of stone... Whatever it did, though, it worked quite well, because a good deal of the skeletons merely shattered apart when he did so... Still, with the reduced effectiveness of their weapons, it was a bit of a challenge for the others to fight the skeletons, except for Colmondes' mace, which worked just fine. The boy, however, seemed to have disappeared completely and was nowhere to be seen, Kroth noted. All of a sudden, a horrifying scream froze Kroth's blood to ice - the scream of an elf! He looked back to see Litharial struggle with some dark assailant in the rear of their group. The elf desperately tried to fight off his opponent with his sword, but it was no use - the creature suddenly gripped him firmly and pale as the elf might have been already, he became even more pale, indeed even older, as the creature held onto him. As it did, the elf's scream turned into an even more horrifying whimper as the expression on his face grew more distant and the life in his body seemed to dwindle, slowly drained from his very soul, or so it seemed to Kroth. Though he didn't care much for elves, Kroth shuddered with disgust as the elf's lifeless body fell to the ground as if his very life had suddenly left it... Colmondes turned around to see what was going on. "Curses!", he shouted as he cast a spell at the dark creature. Though Litharial wasn't exactly a friend of Kroth's, he was still his companion and it was their duty to avenge him, so Kroth flung himself at the abomination as he cried, "Death to the dead!" Aided by Colmondes' spells, he was able to bring the human-shaped creature down, but he kept chopping at it until he was certain that all life, undead or otherwise, had left it! In the meantime, Amanara had disposed off the last of the skeletons, and Kroth rushed to Colmondes who was already examining Litharial's limp body. "We must burn the corpse", he said coldly. Kroth was outraged, "What!!?? He was our companion! He might not have been my friend, or even yours, but we should at least show him some respect!" "Look!", Colmondes answered, "He was killed by a Wight! If we don't burn the body, he will rise as a Wight himself, if not some special elven variety of the creature. Do you want to face another of those creatures? What respect would we pay him if we allowed his body to suffer such a fate? He must be burned!" Kroth tingled with rage, but suddenly a voice behind him said, "He's right, you know...". He looked around - it was the mageling! Where had he come from? He hadn't been there during the battle, and Kroth suspected foul play, so he rushed to the boy and picked him up as he yelled into his face, "By Kagyar! Where were you during this battle? You seem to come and go at the most convenient times, and I find it suspicious how you follow us around!". The boy was clearly shocked, as he didn't even try to break free, but merely responded in a feeble voice, "I... I hid! I couldn't fight all those creatures... I was lucky they didn't find me!". Though the story could be true, Kroth wasn't convinced, but Colmondes interfered. "Have a care, dwarf. That's an aristocrat you're holding there! You're not in Stoutfellow now, you know. Let him go this instant, or you'll pay a high price for your insolence indeed! You'll be lucky if I don't just report you myself!" Kroth looked at Colmondes with both hatred and surprise, "How can you not be suspicious about him after he's followed us around like this and conveniently disappears when there is danger?". Colmondes' cold arrogance immediately resurfaced, and he smiled as he said, "Hah. There are things that are just beyond you, dwarf. Now let the boy go before I teach you some of them!". Kroth was uncertain of what to do, but it wasn't a good situation for him. Colmondes had made his position clear, and Amanara would blindly follow the two aristocrats. She might even attack him if he didn't release the boy, so Kroth just let go of him as he said, "Fine. He's your problem, though. And keep him away from me!". He turned to the boy, "You hear me, mageling! Stay away from me if you know what's good for you - I don't like your tricks!" Kroth turned around and went some distance down the corridor... Some time after he could smell the horrid stench of burning flesh... Shortly after Colmodes, Amanara, and the boy came after him and the four of them continued quietly onward without uttering a word. They walked for a long time, passing many large rooms, corpses long dead, and strange symbols. They walked down several stairs, and made several decisions about which way to go when the corridor parted in several different directions. After continuing like this for a long time, they eventually came to a room with a door that was only slightly open so that they could not see what was inside. Colmondes motioned for them all to remain silent, then approach the room quietly with their weapons drawn. Then they rushed into the room! The room was fairly large. It was clearly a library of some sort, but there were several items here, including weapons like swords or axes, chalices, candelabra, and other things on a large table in the far end of the room. Colmondes pointed to one of these and said, "That's what we're after!", but Kroth wasn't sure what he meant, exactly. Suddenly a voice said, "Sorry, but I'm afraid I'll take that!". The companions looked around and noticed a shadowy figure to the right of them. The figure looked at them so that they could see his face even underneath the hood - it was the aged face of a man! Calmly he said, "Sorry Colmondes, but I'm afraid I can't let you have that!" Colmondes looked with surprise at the newcomer, "You!? What are you doing here?". "Oh, really, my dear Colmondes, you didn't expect I'd just let you claim your treasure that easily, did you? The item has many uses, you know, and I require it for my own studies. Now, I suggest you remove yourself and your, well, 'associates' before I become unfriendly!" Kroth was surprised, "Who is this person Colmondes? And what is he doing here?", he said, but Colmondes didn't answer him. He just looked at the cloaked man with distrust as he said, "I won't just let you take that, you know! Attack him, or we won't be paid!". That was all he needed to tell Kroth, who jumped forward to strike at the opponent, as did Amanara. The man said with surprise as they jumped forward, "You would attack an aristocrat? How foolish of you! Surely you know that the penalty is death... Which I will happily provide for you!" Both Kroth and Amanara missed their attacks, though, and Colmondes tried to cast a spell, yet it seemed to have no effect. The cloaked man laughed, ""Foolish cleric. You think your pathetic powers can stop me? How amusing! Now watch how that spell is properly cast!" As the dark figure began his words of foul magic, Kroth and Amanara tried to strike him again, but it was too late - Colmondes' face froze and he was suddenly completely motionless! Amanara and Kroth were striking at the wizard, and they knew that they landed good hits because he stumbled back. Suddenly, he sneered at Kroth and managed to say a few words before they could stop him, and Kroth found himself hurled through the air until he hit a hard surface and was nearly knocked unconscious... Until he realized just what he had hit. Colmondes! The cleric toppled over, and the stunned Kroth was too late to stop break his fall. The wizard grinned with glee, "Now, is that any way to treat your master? I always knew you rock-biters were clumsy, but really...". Colmondes wasn't Kroth's master and the remark made him blind with rage. He turned around and rushed at the wizard without thinking. Suddenly he found himself flying through the air again, but this time he hit something extremely sharp - a number of spikes at the other end of the room. He tore himself free, and rushed forward again, only to find that he moved with an odd, limp sensation in his body. It wasn't until then that he looked at his side and noticed the green fluid that also flowed from his wounds along with his blood - poison! He was stunned for a moment, and could only watch as the battle continued. The mageling had cast a spell which had hurt the wizard, though not much. No, clearly the damage he took from Amanara was more serious, because he now focused on her, and suddenly he made a movement with his hand toward the young warrior as he spoke words of magic. Amanara stopped as if suspended in time, her face contorted with obvious agonizing pain. Yet she didn't scream. She couldn't. There was nothing for her to scream with! As her companions looked on in horror, her face, her very body withered away and turned to dust before their eyes! Kroth looked on with cold sadness, but the youth was now suddenly very emotional, "NOOOOOOOO!!!!", he screamed as tears filled his eyes, and rage filled his body... He rushed to the small pile of dust which was all that remained of the young warrior, and Kroth finally understood why the youth had followed them - how stupid he had been not to see it before! Why did he always forget that humans were so emotional and acted on those emotions at such an early age! This was even more true of Alphatians than most humans - the boy had followed them because he had been attracted to the young warrior! Kroth didn't find her very attractive - she was far too gentle and slender for that, far too elf-like. But, yes, a young human male would probably have found her very attractive, perhaps even without realizing why himself. She was older than the boy, of course, but not by more than five to ten years at the most... And now she had been brutally murdered before their very eyes! The boy was crushed and tears mixed with the dust in his hands. The cloaked wizard spoke again, and coldly stated, "Why do you cry, boy? She was just a commoner - she wasn't worthy of you. Any aristocrat would tell you that! She just didn't matter". Kroth wanted to move, but he found that he couldn't - his body no longer obeyed his wishes, and he slowly fell to the floor with unreal movements... Colmondes was still motionless, but the boy stood and ran toward the wizard with sorrow and rage in his eyes. He struck at the wizard, who just held him, then threw him to the floor, as he said, "How pathetic! If you really like those worthless females so much, then go out and find another one - there are more than enough, you know. I'll take my prize and go now, though - be glad I don't press charges against you for attacking me. At least Colmondes was clever enough not to assault me with harmful magic or attacks. Pity really - I would have loved putting him before the courts.". With that, he took one of the objects from the far table, made a wave with his hand... and was gone! After a few minutes, the boy came over to Kroth and looked at his wounds. He looked a little worried, but tried to smile and said, "Don't worry. Everything will be fine". It was obvious to Kroth that the boy was lying, yet he appreciated the sentiment that came with that lie, and he said, "I misjudged you, boy. You're all right. But don't lie to me - I know when I'm hurt. Tell me how bad it really is. And don't lie - you're not terribly good at it!". The boy looked saddened as he said, "The poison has entered your system, and it looks dangerous... I just don't have the skill required to treat it. But try not to worry. Colmondes should recover in a little while, and I think he has spells and knowledge that can help you...". The boy tried to smile despite the emotional turmoil he had gone through, and they just waited for Colmondes to come around again. Eventually Colmondes began to move, and his expression changed into one of defeat. The boy ran to him, though. "You must help Kroth - he's been poisoned!" Colmondes just looked at him. "No!", he said, "We have failed, and I must return home now to report to my superiors before they find out - if I hurry I may still be able to protect my position." The boy was stunned with surprise... "What!? You can't just leave him here - he helped you! You hired him, and he needs only a few of your spells!" "He failed me! I don't pay for defeat, and he knew that when he signed on - I see no reason to help him. He's outside Stoutfellow now, and he has no more rights than any other commoner!", Colmondes stated coldly. The boy was furious! He struck at Colmondes and began casting a spell, but the cleric was quicker and cast a spell of his own which left the boy motionless. Then the cleric pulled something from within his Kihara, made a few gestures and said some strange words... and was gone! Kroth could feel his life leaving his body as he lay on the cold marble floor, and it seemed like eternities before the boy could move again and rushed back to him. "Don't worry, I'll get you out of here...", he began, but the dwarf stopped him. "Don't be foolish. You'll never be able to bring me out of here in time, and you can't carry me anyway - you'll have to be careful just to get out of here yourself! But don't worry, it's not your fault. I'm old, and I know you're not to blame for any of this". The boy seemed a little surprised. "I thought you didn't trust me", he said. The dwarf tried to smile, but it turned into a cough, "Nah, I was just spooked because you were following us around like that and I couldn't figure out why. Now I understand why, though, and I'm sorry for all the names I called you. You're okay by me... I'm sorry, but you never told me your name?" "I'm... 'Stalker'", the boy said. "Just call me 'The Stalker'...". The old dwarf laughed at the feeble joke... then all went dark around him! And more than one of these regarded Clouds. Although we may be able to give scientific explanations to their formation and their movements through the planets atmosphere, and we have been able to describe all their possible forms, and what these forms meanwell, with all of our knowledge we havent been able to understand why some clouds appearantly move discordingly with all that we know- winds, atmospheric currents, physic laws - Augustine Celerine, professor of Cloudstudying, Air University of Aeria. NUAGES Those will pass who seek the rain Scatter feathers on the grain Red blood aching all your brains. Mind of men cant not conceive, What I wait for will arrive, tilll the day we all will die. They dont matter, not at all, They are just clouds who hear the call And they come, like the faithful dog Listen to the Masters voice, And his will is nothing, he has no choice. Adrianus Beleu, Thyatian bard. Description: Nuages are sky creatures whose consistence is that of clouds. Nuages appear like light white clouds, thin and misty, generally remaining at about 1,000 meters of height over the land they pass. They move very swiftly if there is wind (200 meters/round), at half the indicated speed if there is no wind, and at if the wind opposes their movement. However, if there is fog, they become virtually invisible and descend amidst it to feed upon living creatures. If Nuages pass through a region where it is raining, they can sciss their molecules into rain and fall upon the ground. There, when it stops raining, they retain their body structure, appearing as vapour that sprouts from the ground, and start to feed themselves on the living creatures of the region. Generally, Nuages find their sustenance killing the birds they meet in their endless travels through the skies; however, Nuages are inherently evil creatures, and they enjoy bringing death and weakness among intelligent creatures. If they are able to descend on the surface world, in the ways described above, Nuages are able to strike their victims with their water molecules, who have a particular chemical structure that enables them to suck 1 hit point every ten rounds they remain near to the victim. The subject of this attack are not able to understand that they are losing hps: they will just feel a mounting weakness, cold, and a desire to sleep. If they lose more than 5 hit points (and are not dead), the creatures will have to make a save vs. spells or fall into sleep in 1d10 rounds (-1 for every point of Constitution over 14). If the victim falls asleep, it will be killed by the Nuages in 1d10 turns, if not awaken by someone else before. Fight the Nuages is nearly impossible, because it is nearly impossible to detect them. Nuages are effected by all the spells that affect Evil: Detect Evil will reveal evil in the air around persons who are attacked by the Nuages, and Protection from Evil will prevent Nuages from getting close enough to damage them. A Destroy Evil will kill an entire flock of Nuages (no saving throw). Spells who affect an area will not kill the Nuages, but will disperde them for some time. Nuages are a race of intelligent but evil elemental-like creatures who originated on Mystara hundreds of years ago. Nuages came into existance in the skies over Greatrealm, but it is uncertain exactly how and why. It is known that about twenty or thirty of them serve the Master, but wheter it is their choice or not remains a mystery. CLOUDKNIGHTS Calling from the night, I hear the echo. A cloudknight. He looks strange and pale, So thin and frail, But it could break me if he would. I look out in the wood, Find no comfort in its cold thick air. The Cloudknight knows it, And it will strike again. Stats: AC: -2 HD: 9**** Movement: 72 meters (24 meters) Attacks: 1 cloudweapon Damage: 1d8 No. Appearing: 1 Save as: Fighter 18 Morale: 12/12 Treasure: none Intelligence: ? Alignement: Neutral ? XP: 3,700 Description: A Cloudknight is a creature from the Elemental Plane of Air. There are only a handful of Cloudknights in Mystara, and each of them is an unique individual, with his personal traits and appearances. However, all Cloudknights have common traits that make them easily recognizable as such, to those who know of their existance. Basically, Cloudknights seem to be tall and armored men, however they are somewhat blurring, and not consistent, making them seem a distorted vision, or a ghost; their skin seems to be pale azure, and all other features colour goes from light gray to ice white. Cloudknights fight only if forced to, or to accomplish their duties (see below). If someone with whom they must not fight confronts them, they take on gaseous form and leave the area (however they cannot remain in gaseous form for more than one turn, then they cannot assume gaseous form for 3 hours). If they are somehow prevented to do so, they will first use their magical powers (one cone of cold per day, hold persons three times a day), then attack with their cloudweapon, a sword who hits for 1d10 of damage and can hit any opponent (even those who are immune to magical weapons of whatever power). The sword disappears with the Cloudknight if it is killed. Cloudknights cannot be stopped by protection from evil or similar spells, and can suffer damage only from magical weapons (the damage, however, will be equal only to the weapons magical bonus, with no modifiers from Strength), and spells of 3rd level or higher, with the exception of spells of cold, hold, charm, death rays and mind affecting spells; they are also immune to poison. Cloudknights come on Mystara from the Elemental Plane of Air only when asked to do so by one of the Air Elemental Rulers, to foster their imperscrutable desires (kill or bring back to the Air Dimension elemental creatures, punish mortals who abuse of their elemental powers, or whatever else). They are constructs, created magically by the Rulers in a fashion similar to that of golems on the Prime; however, scholars who are aware of their existance wonder wheter elementals of the Air Dimension effectively take possession of these magical bodies. It is not known if Cloudknights are sent to dimensions different from the Prime. In this case, they probably assume a different appearance, that suits best that plane. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2000 10:31:26 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Marco Fossati Subject: Bellissaria MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Fellow Listmembers, who were the rulers of the kingdoms of Bellissaria around 980 AC? A little detail I take for granted because so many people here refer to DOTE (Dawn of the Emperors) so intimately. A Kihara is a robe made from the silk of Silk Spiders - special spiders who live only in Alphatia because the Alphatians brought them here from Old Alphatia. They produce special silk which Alphatians use to make robes that only the aristocrats (i.e., spellcasters) may wear, so its use has some important overtones. >Merry Christmas, > Thanks. Also, IMC the three Traladaran Immortals are LG (Halav), NG (Petra), and CG (Zirchev), so that their Church appears more balanced (generally NG). -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@fusberta.elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles/index.htm ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 21:31:21 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: FRANZ Subject: Dragon Knight PC in OD&D MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Haven't read anything about the trilogy of DragonKing yet, i have no idea about relationship between dragons and humas or demihumans, in order to follow a plot begun with the palace of silver princess and Ellis the Pure. Dragons are pretty powerful creatures. It has been suggested that the mounts of the retebius air fleet should be replaced with Wyverns. Perhaps you could do the same for your campaign? He must gain the dragon's respect: and that's not going to be a duel, not too hard for a 9th lvl + Fighter with nifty magic items and weapons. The dragon will demand a quest of some type, some heroic deed which benefits both dragonkind and the particular dragon. Variant: the dragon can be a captive or slave of some baddies (probably opposed factions in draconic affairs) and the PC must rescue him/her. 5. PC and dragon (with the aid of other party members perhaps) must petition to the dragon's draconic Immortal so that the bond between dragon and knight is granted. There's yet another long quest to find clues for a sanctuary of the Immortal and some hard travel and adventures to get to it. 6. After the PC becomes a Knight, there are some tools to balance the presence of a dragon "henchman": a) The PC cannot be a land-owning character (dragonknight becomes, in fact, a "subclass" of travelling character) b) The dragon will involve the PC (and possible friends) in many difficult adventures to further the cause of his faction of dragonkind. These quests will have enemies aplenty, powerful enough to compensate for the dragon's powers. These draconic quests can take place in secluded areas of Mystara or in the Planes, so that the normal campaign does not become a Dragonlance clone. c) Even in "normal" pursuits of the PC and his party, enemies of his draconic allegiance will probably send agents and interferences which, without taking away all the protagonism, will surely add difficulties to the adventures. E.G. : A Darokinian Dragon Knight takes some action against the Master of Hule during WotI: he's lucky enough to have a bond with a Gold Dragon, so they and the rest of the party can try and go into Sind and Hule following X4 and X5 action: well, the PCs' "undercover" can be blown mid-travel by some enemies of the "Red Dragon Circle" and the Master can benefit of two Red Dragonriders which form and alliance of sorts to defeat that nuisance of Knight and Darokinian spies with a single blow: the PCs will have to avoid a couple of dragon ambushes in the trek to Greatrealm, and, if they are having an easy time in the showdown with the avatar of Hosadus, one or two of the red dragon knights may swoop for a climatic fight... All in all, as the PC spends more time in alliance with the dragon, he'll have to choose between human (elf/dwarf/etc) politics or be more and more drawn in draconic strifes and interests... just as high-level PCs are more and more drawn into planar affairs till they get closer to the doings of Immortals. Sometimes, party of elves might go to the Sylvan Realm to accomplish specific missions, but unless the humanoids are chased and the Elvenbane is destroyed, it is unlikely that the Sylavn Realm can have any effect over the SE-Alfheim war. If that is the case, a freed Sylvan Realm may serve as an escape route for the Alfheimers. This can be an interesting solution if you want to avoid the consequences of the Alfheimers' migration to Karameikos/Wendar, while having the SE conquest of Canolbarth happen. Otherwise, it could be possible that in some campaign, the PCs are able to free the Sylvan Realm and use it to avoid the SE-Alfheim war, since now there would be enough forest for both. As for the "Tree of Life" adventure, I don't know what the plot is, so I can't be of any help. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@fusberta.elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 08:19:17 -0500 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: John Hofmann Subject: Re: Sylvan Ream, part 2 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >but unless the humanoids are chased and the Elvenbane is destroyed, What exactly is the Elvenbane? Agosta > As for the "Tree of Life" adventure, I don't know what the plot is, so I > can't be of any help. The plot involves a journey by a party of Elves of level 10+ to save the Feadiel clan's dying Tree of Life. The adventure starts out in a relatively normal Canolbarth Forest in what would have to be pre-conquest Alfheim and involves the liberation of the Sylvan Realm and the return to it of much of the Feadiel clan. I have pretty much assumed that this adventure took place before the Shadow Elf conquest, although the dire consequences that it suggests for the loss of a clan's Tree of Life would seem to put the Alfheim Elves in a precarious situation after they lose their land to the Shadow Elves. However, with the Rainbow Bridge as the sole means available for transportation from Alfheim to the Sylvan Realm, it seems most likely that any Alfheim Elves who did not travel there before the conquest would be stuck in southeastern Brun for many years thereafter -- although one idea for the Almanac Team might be to set up an event around the expected appearance of the Rainbow Bridge at a specific time and place and the resulting gathering of Elves hoping to escape to the Sylvan Realm. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 05:43:39 -0000 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Phillip Jones Subject: Re: Dragon Knight PC in OD&D MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit ----- Original Message ----- From: Andrs Piquer Otero > IMO, I would make obtaining a "with-dragon" dragon knight status possible > but hard: it would follow a process similar to a Paladin looking for a > mount, but proportionally longer and harder: > > 1: the PC must be of Name level > 2: He must find an appropiate society > > (Retebius Air Fleet is fine, but IMC I have applied a rule: ALL dragon > riders must have secured their own dragons through a personal quest, the > Empire does not have a "reserve pool" of dragons for Knights to pick and > choose) > > 3: He must find clues for a dragon's lair (and NOT all dragons are OK: > besides usual alignment requirements, the dragon must be young or young > adult, as the personal bond between dragon and rider requires time to forge: > older dragons are too much into draconic world and removed from lower mortal > affairs) > > 4. After the PC becomes a Knight, there are some tools to balance the > presence of a dragon "henchman": > There are three methods of aquiring a dragon mount in my campaign. 1. The character may raise one from an egg. There is two ways that a PC might get an egg. They could either quest for one themselves, or they could buy one (yes, some people DO sell them!). This would cost 1000gp x the hit dice of the adult small dragon it would become. The egg will take 2 years before it hatches, during which time, the PC must employ a Dragon Trainer to tend the egg, costing the PC 500gp/month. (if the PC has the Dragon Trainer General skill he/she may raise the egg himself, but the PC is unable to go adventuring then due to the time taken tending the egg, and will cost him 250gp/month in consumable resources anyway). Once the egg has hatched it will take a further a period of time before the Dragon is large enough to ride this is dependant on the HD of the young adult dragon. it works out something like: White Dragon: 4 years for the dragon to become 3 HD Black Dragon: 6 years for the dragon to become 4 HD Green Dragon: 9 years for the dragon to become 5 HD Blue Dragon: 12 years for the dragon to become 6 HD Red Dragon: 15 years for the dragon to become 7 HD Gold Dragon: 18 years for the dragon to become 8 HD This is calculated using the following table Hit Die of Dragon Time Needed to "Grow" 1 Hit Die 1/2 HD 1 Year 1 HD 1 Year 2 HD 2 Years 3 HD 3 Years 4 HD 4 Years 5 HD 5 Years 6 HD 6 Years 7 HD 7 Years 8 HD 8 Years 9 HD 9 Years 10 HD 10 Years 11 HD 11 Years 12 HD 12 Years 13 HD 13 Years 14 HD 14 Years I calculated the dragons HD at birth by simply -6 HD from the adult small dragons hit die. Where the result was zero (ie the white dragon), they are taken to be 1/2 hit die. Then using the table above I worked out how long it would take for the dragon to reach young adult (-3 HD of the adult small dragons hit die), and become strong enough to support a rider. This process is not only long, but it is also expensive, as a dragon will consume 1000gp x its hit dice in food per month (and thats not counting the cost for the dragon trainer/handler - another 500gp per month!!), so a dragon rider raising a blue dragon would spend a staggering 684,000 gp on it before he would even get to ride it!! (and thats assuming he didn't buy the egg!!) The dragon will basically be a beast, and have no spell casting capability, or will it ever evolve to to the "Large" variety, as that requires the dragon to follow the draconic ways of life. On the plus side though, the creature will be loyal (like a well trained horse is). 2. Subduing a dragon. A dragon rider wishing to get a mount this way, must fight the dragon in single combat and defeat it (striking to stun obviously). The dragon would then obey the dragon rider out of fear, but given the chance it will turn on its rider and destroy him. What I have done to simulate this, is to give the dragon a Willpower score, much in the same way as an intelligent sword has. This is calulated by the following: Base willpower = the dragons HD +1 willpower for every full 10 points that the dragons breath attack inflicts +1 willpower for every spell level the dragon can cast (i.e. if the dragon can cast 3rd level spells then it would have +3 to its willpower score) +0 willpower for same alignment as the rider, +1 willpower for one step difference between alignments of the dragon and the rider (i.e. riders alignment: lawful, dragons alignment: neutral etc) +2 willpower for opposite alignments between dragon and rider (i.e. riders alignment: lawful, dragons alignment: chaotic etc) When the rider has been weakened in some way (injured etc) make a willpower check, not forgetting to apply the modifiers for the riders weakened state. If the dragons willpower exceeds the riders, then the dragon will turn on the rider in an effort to gain its freedom. This is no doubt the most dangerous way of owning a dragon. 3. Allying a dragon. There is 3 pre-requisites to ally with a dragon. First, the dragon rider must be of the same alignment as the dragon in question. Secondly, the dragon rider have at least the same amount of levels as the dragon in question has Hit Dice. Finally, the dragon rider must get a favourable reaction roll from the dragon in question, otherwise the dragon will be not be interested in an alliance anyway!! Assuming that the dragon rider passes all 3 pre-requisites, it will set the dragon rider 3 missions to accomplish. These missions will be very difficult, and often cryptic with hidden goals. The dragon will monitor the PCs progress on these quests and assuming the PC succeeds on them, will then agree to be the PCs mount for a period of time. Remember, these missions will be very difficult indeed. Dragons hate being disturbed, and especially when their just asked to be mounts!!! Obviously, this method is by far the best way of owning a dragon mount, but do not forget that this type of mount will have a personality and goals of its own. It will ally with the dragon rider as long as it is mutually beneficial to do so, and move on when it isn't. The dragon will often leave a way for the dragon rider to get in touch with it when it does finally leave though.
