Pain wrecked his body as he tried to stand up. The stone floor was surprisingly warm and welcoming. He lay on the floor in an embryonal position, so he felt simply the least possible stinging pain. Laren thought. He made a mental note to thank all gods he knew for the arrogance of that damn lich. Every black mage would have finished the job moments ago. But not this guy. Andrs magical abilities were much better than legends told. But just one joker was left. And it was time to play it. Now or never. "For long years I didnt have such an amusing distraction. Yes, you were quit good, young mage. You even used some spells I didnt know. But I feel your fear, fear for your life." A man in an old-fashioned traladaran robe turned again to his side, chuckling. "Yes, the fight was a fun I almost never felt before. But before I finish you, to my regrets, I have to kill your friends outside. They decimate my pawns too much. Especially these to fighters with their divine help." The mouth -part of a sunken face- began to move for a complicated spell. The wrinkled hands moved with astounishing speed. Laren knew the spell. He found hints of it in an old tome back in Krakatos. This spell was called Nightfire and bound energies from the Negative Plane to the ground of a 300 feet radius around the caster, slowly drawing all life of everyone standing in that area. And the spell would be complete in few seconds. ** "Lords and Ladies! Make place for the new ambassador of Glantri, Lady Marianita Lucia de Leon y Valdez, blessed with the authority of the Princes of Glantri!" Applause raised through the great hall as a beautiful elven lady entered. A large man sitting on the throne raised and stepped down to equal level of the elven lady. As they met, the lady bowed and smiled seductively at the duke. "Oh, oh. Look at the duchess." Thrandir whispered to Aurelius. Aurelius, clad in silver and white in his ceremonical breastplate, turned to look at her, a knowing smile on his lips. "Yes, indeed. The duchess wont appreciate such a beauty at court. A shame that weve to fight great evil instead of enyoing this." The duke returned to his throne, sat down and look to the left side of the hall. "Now, Laren, finally youre free of your duties, arent you?" The crowd parted as a black robed man went toward the throne. He had dark hair, was completedly dressed in black, yet he radiated an aura of peace and happiness. The man called Laren smiled up to Duke Stefan "Yes, I am. Therefore I request formally the Land of Dreams of you for my estate." The duke looked sternly at Laren. "You know, I cannot give you what I don't really own. The mists and nightmares persist around the Lake of Lost Dreams. The evil resides there, as the traladaran legends tell it." "So its my land if I free it from that evil? My own?" "Yes. But I warn you. Nearly two thousand years the area is cursed. Are you such a great mage that you can fight two thousand years of evil?" "Not alone. But with the help of my friends well do it." "Then you have my blessing. Go and free Karameikos from that evil and you shall own the land you want." Laren bowed and went to his friends near the throne. "Was it necessary to request the official permission?", Aurelius asked, "As he said just moments ago, he CANT give a permission." Laren smiled. "Yes. But thats politics. Im a mage with reputation. If I seek permission, it strengthens his position. Just poilitics. Hes eager to see us fighting the east to freedom. Lets go. I dont have the stomach today for a flirt with Marianita." Laren turned and Aurelius and Thrandir followed. The nobles shifted uneasily when they saw their departure. Aurelius was a reknown member of the highest religious order of Thyatis, while the elf Thrandir was less known, but the higher nobles knew Thrandir held a high position in the elven court, whatever that may be. "Knight-Brother Aurelius, may I please request a few minutes of your time?" A man in simple but fine clothes stood near, "Im Yurikai Heltar from Marilenev. My son heard of your new abbey and..." Laren and Thrandir turned to a side smiling. "Every day at least twenty candidates for a place in the abbey. This lands going to be populated by humble servants of some pantheon in a few years." Thrandir ironically remarked. Laren chuckled "Yes. Maybe. But I know Aurelius. I give him two minutes and hell catch up with us after fobbing off that court lord." "Two minutes? Not today." came Aurelius deep bariton from behind them. "We have other things to discuss. Whats going with your spell researches?" Laren frowned. "I could use a little bit more time, but I don't have the nerves. A slight variation to the spell and I should get it working in a few days. And you?" Thrandir shrugged. "Im ready for everything. Elves rely on themselves with more confidence than humans. If I cant survive a fight as I am, I wont with more spells or items. Im ready." "Me too," added Aurelius, "but Flosis on travel. Hell return in three days, as Im informed. Got some useful items as far as I understand. Well see." Laren nodded. "Yes, clerical spells and items we can use everything we get. Ive requested some items from the `Griffons but I dont think well get much help. The powers of you and Flosi will be the best well have." "Should be enough for some poor souls, but is it really enough for the greater undead we expect? Well see." Aurelius said. Laren sighted and Thrandir clasped Aurelius shoulder. "Lets get packed. We should arrive few days before the rest for not to awaken the interest of a mighty evil before we have done some serious damage." They left the court. Thrandir and Aurelius sat on their mounts outside the city gates. Aurelius was clad in his polished breatplate, his shield fastened to the left side of his horse. So his sword was partially hidden behind it but reachable. A red cape with a great cross he wore around his neck, held by a clasp with a ruby. The mighty warhorse nervously snorted, pressing for departure. Thrandir sat on his elven horse, a much more delicate version of a sandard horse, but more agile and faster. He wore dark green clothes which hide a finely crafted elven chain mail. A large bow and a quiver with silver-feathered arrows were secured behind him, a scabbarded sword was at his side. A grey cloak gave warmth and a silver circlet on his head an image of nobility. They turned to the road after Laren didnt appear, supposedly sitting above some books to get his spell finished. Only little time later they disappeard behind the horizon. *** Laren, Flosi and Elaya sneaked through the dark woods. The eyes of all three shone with infravision, and a slight silver star in their eyes made them able to see all evil. Laren held a black wand, Flosi had a firm grip on his warhammer and Elaya was at the rear with her bow ready. Laren tried a last joke, for the evil came into reach "Hey, Flosi, What was the quote Thor made when he saw you?" "Hmmm?" Laren chuckled as Flosi stepped into something undefinable but stinking. "Shit!" Flosi cursed. Laren chuckled a little bit too loud. A secure sign of too much adrenaline in his veins. "Ah, Laren, you get every joke crushed. Now attention, I feel something." Elaya said with strain in her voice. Yes indeed. Something was it. In fact, the hell broke out. *** To be continued --------------- I hope you enjoyed it! The windows are closed, the door's barred. But the air filters, crawls and spies. It wraps me. It penetrates inside me and it freezes me. From where does it come? Where does it go? I must kill it. Like the wick of a candle. And then to let it twisted, dark, on the ground, like a dead serpent, the head crashed, with its cold blood in a tiny pool, dirty and slimy. A whif that may kill this cold breath that passes through my shoulder, outer breath, of the world that hears me, this cold created on purpose against me. I must kill this air. To whisp and may it remain without life. How lovely to say: to kill a candle! But how can I kill this draught that is killing me?" Thoutis suddenly stopped his thinkings when the door was opened. 3 cloacked figures entered in the dark room and closed the door. One of them lit a candle. A bit of light ran throughout the room but Thoutis still remained unnoticed, hidden in a corner, protected by a big armchair. The 3 man were undoubtely warriors, they weared armors and and swords. Scars on thier faces showed they were all veterans of a lot of battles. Thoutis rushed from his position. All lasted only for a second and then two of the warriors was already laying on the floor, both with their neck cut by Thoutis' fast sword. The third one was faster than his companions and drawed his sword and faced Thoutis. He saw an unusually short and slim elf, even for elven standard, with long black hair and deep black eyes. The elf's face showed no emeotions. The warrior was huge and strong and with all his strenght he stroke. Thoutis parried, his muscles trembled for the terrible impact but the sword was broken. The warrior wildly smiled seeing Thoutis without defence. He simply said: "You're arrived at the end of your life, elf" and he lifted his sword for the final blow. But Thoutis opened his bare hand and an incredible fast wind exited from it. The warrior's armor and chest exploded in a fountain of blood. The candle had been put out... Thoutis went out in the night. Quintus Valerius Metellus, Senator of the Metellus family. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Among the ranks of the Free Thinkers, a man rises to speak in front of the Senate. He emanates from all of his body an aura of calculated coldness, and speaks in a low, cold, voice tone. His baritonal voice fills the Senate with mocking words that attack the resolution that the Senate, pushed by the Aristocratic faction, is going to pass. Although he seems overall uninteressed in what he is saying, like if he was complaining for the unpoliteness of a child at an important party, his words show the rage he has for a resolution that he doesnt approve at all. He is Quintus Valerius Metellus, a nobleman from an ancient family of the northern mountains of Kantrium. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- History: Quintus is the third son of the senator Severin Metellus and of Eliana Ghellariar. At first, Severin was disappointed by his birth, as he didnt want a third son. Severin ignored completely the boy until he was five, when the parents realized the insanity of the little Damian. However, considering that Severin thought of Lucius Valerius as his heir, he still continued to view the boy with little or no care, and not too different was the position of his mother. The sore boy grew up in the indifference of his relatives, comforted only by the love of his brother Lucius. Quintus developed soon a profound hate for the parents, and dedicated himself to litterary and philosophical studies, only to change toward political ones when both his older brothers left for Karameikos, thwarting his fathers plans about their entrance in the poltical life of Thyatis. Quintus didnt remain much with the hated parents: he left for the capital when he was eighteen (AC 996) and entered soon the aristocratic circles, where he matured a dislike for the decadent ways of most of the young nobility. He refused firmly alcohol, zzonga and other addictions, and excluded himself from most of the passions of the young nobles. After a love delusion he reacted closing himself toward others, especially women, and his brothers remained the only confidants he had for years. In AC 1005 he entered the Army against the will of his father, to fight for the Empire, although he had little knowledge of weapons, with the assumed name of Falcon Boar, because he didnt want to receive a particular attention given his rank. He fought for four years in the infantry, surviving the most bloody battles. Consiquences of his fights are a good prowess with the hand axe, a scar in the stomach that causes him intestinal difficulties, and a broken knee who didnt cure too well and that gives him a somehow halting pace. In AC 1009 he left the Army with the rank of Centurion and a Cross of Gold decoration for having saved his commander (a noble General) from death during a battle; he revealed his identity, returned home and killed his father, hid the proof of this, did the same with his mother, and took the title of Senator, because his brothers were uninterested in it. Personality: Quintus is a very cold, pragmatical and rational man, who dislikes superstitions and incompetence. Quintus is a Free Thinker among the senators: he consider the factions a stupid heritage that has to be thrown down, because the senators should be able to think with their heads, and should not be listening to the opinions of the group they are part of. He dislikes the Emperor and the Imperial organization, but thinks that a Republic would not be able to maintain control over the land, and the Senate would not be strong enough. He loves his brothers, although he disliked his parents so much that he killed them. Regarding this, Quintus has mixed feelings. He has somehow rationalized his actions, but he knows that this is wrong, and he feels guilty as a criminal. His bitterness at the world outside could also be influenced by this act that he is trying to remove from his memory. Quintus has not as many interests as his brothers: apart poltics, he is fond of heraldry and litterature, and he has written poetry secretly: he has been disappointed by Valerius success as a poet, and has thus decided not to publish his writings (even if they are better than his- but he isnt aware of this). Appearance: Tall, slender, not muscled like his brothers, he is however very resistant to fatigue, and well-trained. Quintus is a beautiful man, although his sharp features and prominent nose make him a little less attractive than his brothers, as does his cold-looking amber-brown eyes. He has dark hair and a short and cultivated beard. He has a low, bass voice, and speaks in a calculated manner, fast and aggressive or calm and slow, depending on the circumstances. My PC's have a small elete army, but want an effective army. Also I don't like the idea of deciding a battle on one dice role but I don't want to have to role dice for every man in the army. What I was thinking was writing an advanced war machine. Not one simply with more/different rules for stats but one that could account for units, tactics, heros etc, while preserving the elements of the war machine system. I thought about having individual unit BR's but I don't think this will work (archers???). How would you convert them and stop the super-elete squad in the crap army that systematically wipes out everyone. The conclution I came to is I think there needs to be some kind of dammage + fatigue system for the units. Also if you were to role d100 for each unit battle then the statistics make middle roles more likely and thus remove the chance of lucky victorys and crushing defeats which makes the WM quite fun and is an aspect that could be worth excentuating. I'm really after a system that gives about the same result as a war machine battle but makes the use of tactics and units more vitial and takes more then just one dice role. Individual units need I think to have at least 10 men and a commanding officer. smaller units with more command structure should be more manoverable, take less time to respond to orders. there needs to be attack and defence strengths for front back left and right (like roman legions were more vunrable to their right and rear but strong on their front and left), and attack strength ranges for missile troops. units should also have some kind of hit point like strength. a small unit attacking a big unit should be at a disadvantage in numbers only. clearly if a unit of 10 attacks a unit of 1000 then a 1000 men clearly can't all attack the 10 men at once but the 10 men would get fatigued and surrounded very soon. stats I think should be based on: all attack strength should be influenced by level. front attack strength: weapon and formation left attack strength: weapon and equipment (foot troops with sheilds in left hand should be penalised unless they about face). right attack strength: weapon and equipment rear attack strength: weapon and training. range attack strength: weapon front defencive strength: armor equipment, and formation left defencive strength: armor and equipment (foot troops with sheilds in left hand should be bonused unless they about face). right defencive strength: armor and equipment rear defencive strength: armor and training. dammage absorbtion (hit points for units): level and no. of troops (ie no. of HD). fatigue (should influence attack and defence strengths and movement): training(and level), time fighting, numerical supremacy, time marching, unfavorable terrain. command value (no of actions a unit can preform): training and no. of command offices and their level. manuvers(feats for units): training, veteren status. morale: command value, terrain, country, fatigue, level, damage taken. magic - used under manuvers, influenced by level. --------------------------- That's most of my ideas for the system. I'm not sure what dice to use however and how to make it simple enough not to have to consult tables every two seconds. most unit info would fit on a rectangular unit token, and the rest needs to be easy to keep track of and implement. with luck you should be able to convert from normal rules to this system easily and convert army stats in the PWA's to this too. An ongoing project of a sort. Tell me what you think. Chris. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm in the process of adapting & converting it (to AC1004) for use in my Mystara-Birthright game once I get it going again (hopefully soon). And I've got a couple of questions about it for any of you from the TCR, if you don't mind? First, it say's your site was updated on January 6th, but I can't figure out what part was updated then. Your site mentions that Baldassarre Patrizio takes over as Count of Lucinius after Semporonius Enistidar dies, but when did Enistidar die? I know from your site that in AC1003 Patrizio is made a General and by AC1006 he was already a count when he got married, so it was sometime between 1003 & 1006, and my game is currently at AC1004. Is the Duke of Machetos's (Callastian) last name Jonassanian or Jowdynites? I've seen both spellings in various resources, both Canon & non canon. When did Glantri's father become elected? And last, did you know that the link to the Colonial rulers page is not working? Or is it just not up yet? The Machetos question is one I particularily need to figure out first, as one of the players webpages turn 3 will reference him, the others I can presume on with any problem. Hopefully one of you can help me out. Thank you. If I'm right in that battlesystem represents individuals the problem is then the games become long and drawn out and all about troop movements etc. I'm trying to avoid that. Really all I'm thinking is something that gives a bit more flexibility and realism to the war machine concept without actually turning it into a fully fledged battle game. Something that can deal with 10,000+ troops that doesn't take hours and doesn't have someone lose the battle just because of one bad role. Also in a Mystaraian sence it needs to be easy to convert and play without spending hours sorting out figures and formations, just some simple rules. A lot like a battle board game insted of a table top strategy game. It would be easy enough to convert the PWA armies to a system like this and put it on the web which would also make it more appealing and easy to organize. Thats what I think at least. To give my two cents, I think there's a nice way of giving more "depth" to War Machine without making it terribly hard: IIRC, there's a special BFR bonus for Elves and Dwarves, as well as for monsters with asterisks... you could make a table of detailed BFR bonuses for different monsters and character classes (per level), as well as taking into account terrain bonuses (as Forest for Elves and Mountain for dwarves). Then, you get a diversity of values for different troops, but you can figure out and use a single total in a combat, without going into the "unit by unit" battlesystem way. Also, given that the one-roll decides a battle is quite unfair, I would give the option of "dividing forces": well, in WM it appears as a need to split a force when there are different forces in one side and one single force in the other; I would modify it a bit: in a battle, any force big enough (you decide, maybe that small skirmishes are ok with a single roll) MUST be divided into vanguard and rear guard. In the standard one-on-one battle, the vanguard roll is resolved first. After the result, the loser may use the vanguard for another roll, or for trying to withdraw or hold or whatever, the victor may press with his vanguard or bring fresh rearguard troops. the players may split the troops evenly or not so much, in RW battles keeping a strong rearguard or just risking a big initial offensive were usual choices an strategist had to make. I would also enforce the "tactics" optional rule and take into account terrain features more than to make simple die rolls: for instance, in a narrow ravine, if a character wants to engulf, he'll have to split his army into smaller units and the defender should split his forces evenly: as the army is spread along a long line, total BR would not reflect the realistic chances of defense and reaction... All in all, I see that the best way of resolving a battle with WM is to split armies into smaller groups, bigger than units or regiments, probably just two or three per side of the battle, to portray strategy choices and terrain options. Thanks for the input. this was my original track of thinking. However to me it creates problems, war machine in my opinion was designed to deal with one army versus another army, and anything more or less then this it seems to break down. This is why I was thinking of developing a unit bassed system from it and normal D&D. Could someone tell me if battlesystem deals with the individual troops in units or just units. I have been assuming the first. IMO having about 60 counters for a legeon (about 6,000 men) is not too bad, given most are pretty much the same. While having 6,000 counters would be rediculous. If the rules are simple enough then it could go quite quickly. and strategy becomes extremely important which is something I like. Also with a unit based system it gives the characters a chance to actually make a difference in the middle of battle and maintain a time flow of actions rather then just saying armys meet, you lose, go home. It becomes armys meet, troops driven before you, the men around you flee, but you hold fast. you become encircled and have to fight your way out or be captured, in the fury you meet the enemy general and .... much more then just you are in the battle lines and your army is routed and you maraculously survive. Thats how I see it. Chris. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The player will be taking control of Corwyn Mauntea on turn three of the game (I just sent out turn 2) and will see the webpage for the first time then. I wanted to know the correct spelling for Callastian's surname and have the correct Count of Lucinius before he see's it so I don't have to come up with an explanation why it gets changed later. Working out a BFR and BR identifies a unit extremely well, and the modifiers to combat results take many things into consideration for each force. Tactics are limited only if you don't ignore the stupid one per side rule and apply one per force. BTW what exactly do you mean by heroes? Similar to those mentioned in the PWAs? IMO they're mainly for MAD i.e. you wipe out our elite cavalry with them wnd we'll toast your superheavy infantry. Having run a few tabletop battles I can tell you that sensible magic totally destroys the effectiveness of most opposition forces in short order. A flying character dropping continual darkness pebbles into the opposition soon breaks up formations etc. > I thought about having individual unit BR's but I > don't think this will work (archers???). As for the super elite squad, just keep throwing much larger numbers of lower class troops at them. That +100 if outnumber opponent by 8 to 1 is a great leveller. The percentage losses of the smaller more powerful force have a much more dramatic effect as they face a second inferior unit which outnumbers them heavily. Don't forget that such squads are also much easier to eliminate as a threat magically than an entire army of inferior troops. > Also if you were to role d100 for each unit battle > then the statistics make middle roles more likely and > thus remove the chance of lucky victorys and crushing > defeats which makes the WM quite fun and is an aspect > that could be worth excentuating. > Maybe you've been doing it right and I missed the point and accidentally found a better way to do it all along! >;^)~ > I'm really after a system that gives about the same > result as a war machine battle but makes the use of > tactics and units more vitial and takes more then just > one dice role. > Just split your troops into forces and allow each to use it's own tactics. > Individual units need I think to have at least 10 men > and a commanding officer. smaller units with more > command structure should be more manoverable, take > less time to respond to orders. there needs to be > attack and defence strengths for front back left and > right (like roman legions were more vunrable to their > right and rear but strong on their front and left), > and attack strength ranges for missile troops. units > should also have some kind of hit point like strength. > 10 is the minimum size of a War machine force. There are some rules regulating movement based on force size just refine them. The benefit for having officers is an all or nothing thing though, I use total level of all officers divided by minimum number of officers needed instead. +10 if attacking on the flank, +30 if attacking rear seems about right or use the numbers as negatives to the defenders BR. I'm pretty sure that Battlesystem uses units of troops, much as you = describe it here (or at least that it's possible to divide your army = into these units). I know for a fact that you use individual counters = for heroes and such (that's all I remember from looking at = Battlesystem). Try taking a look at X10: Red Arrow, Black Shield (if you = got it). Pg. 21 mentions a Battlesystem setup with 4 units of Dwarves = vs. 4 units of Giants (2 regular, 2 skirmishers) and a unit of Dire = Wolves. Also pg. 27 is devoted to the final battle played as = Battlesystem, and it mentions units several times. I think that this is likely what you're looking for, based on your = descriptions. It will take some work to convert existing armies (that's = for sure), and it will take a lot of time to finish a battle (I = suspect), but the system is there, it's for the same game system (minor = differences at the most), it's play-tested, and it does what you're = looking for (as far as I can tell). I agree. but it describes a full army better. A full army always has a better BR then that of one unit. But if you can get a bunch of sword and sheild men in close combat with them magic goes downhill fast (in real D&D at least) Also they run out fast. Magic is a difficult issue thats for sure though. Under the war machine rules heroic actions give you bonuses, It would be nice to be able to have in battle, circumstantial bonuses for heroics. Not even a sound could be heard. The unnatural silence parted as suddenly some voices were heard. Among a baldy suppressed chuckle a female voice said nervously "You get every joke crushed, Laren. Now attention, I feel something!". Suddenly a black figure stood in front of them. A dark cloak around its shoulders hid everything but two glowing eyes. The figure said with doom in its voice "Turn back, or your life is forfeit. Im the guardian of the Tower of Nightmares. No one is to pass." After that statement it was silent. The Detect Evil spell showed very strong evil Flosi thought. "Stand away, Ive not traveled that way to communicate with a servant!" "So perish, fools." The robed figure moved for a second an three green lances of light appeared out of the body of it. The beams almost flowed toward the three heroes, one for each. Flosi thought about doging, but cancelled it . But just before they reached them, they hit an unseen barrier and disappeared. The gowing eyes narrowed. "Impressive, but useless. A spellbarrier wont last forever and Im no normal mage!" With these words, it started a series of short words. Offensive magics shot in fast sequence at them. Each of them hit the barrier, but the shield got weaker. Each attack got nearer at Flosi. He just was about to engage in melee, when with a dull *smack* the head of the monster left the corpse. Where the head was before, a shining blade appeared from behind. "Gods above! All undead think themselves that smart, but they fall for the same trick everytime." Aurelius bariton sounded from behind the falling monster. Suddenly it exploded in a ball of fire, crushing through the failing shield Laren had cast! Aurelius and the three newcomers were caught in intense flames. After the eyes normalized, only Flosi had burnings on him. "Ouch! Shit! What was that?!" " Ah Flosi, you didnt forget to protect yourself against fire, didnt you? As I told you all only few days before, the Zodiac is a creature most dangerous. But overconfident. AND I told you it could explode after death, just like a magicians contingency. Where were your thoughts?" Laren answered. "Hmmpf, you always tell much things no one wants to know." Flosi already glowed with healing magic But the first strong enemy was finished quickly. A good sign. *** Ambassador Laren Firefriend sat in his most comfortable chair in his quarters. In a chimney wood burned and filled the room with comforting warmth. He held a book in his hands "Tales About Dreams". It was an old book, dating back to AC, for sure. He couldnt say the exact date, because not one hint was detectable. No king, no name of any noble. The book told about the area today known as "Land of Nightmares", just south of Haven around the Lake of Lost Dreams. Today it was filled with evil and no creature of good dares to enter the area. The Vialya elves guard the northern border, so they could tell a little bit about it. His most trusted friend, Elaya, was a Vialya elf. She brought this book some days ago with the greetings of her princess, Argenta. "And after Antaros the Wise discovered the nature of dreams, he built a tower with a kind of gate to the Plane of Dreams. Stupidly some apprentices had plans for the tower, too, and murdered Antaros. Bad luck, I would say. So one or more apprentices should rule the tower now. Probably now undead. Or a successor with equal power. Now, I cant detect more informations in this book, but its more than nothing. At least I know the creator of the tower. Was a good man as fas as I see." Laren didnt tell this to himself. Flosi sat in another chair in a corner. Flosi was a warrior blessed from Thor, god of thunder. He wore always a chain mail covered by the fur of a boar. Large leather boots and a cape of boar fur fitted his nordish style. Flosi "Hammerhand" owned a powerful weapon sacred by his god. Of course the warhammer never was far away from his hands. "Maybe. But maybe he didnt open a gate to the Plane of Dreams but to the Plane of Nightmares. Or he wasnt that good at all and intentionally invited these evil monsters to Traladara." "Yes. Ive to search for more hints. It seems impossible to get a book How to defeat great evil in Specularum. Krakatos may hold some informations. Hey Flosi, time for a cleansing?" "Cleaning Krakatos? Vampires and such like? Of course. Now or can I participate the great feast going on just now?" Flosi said with a casual voice. "Feast? Oh, I forgot! Damn! Ive to change!" Laren jumped up and disappeared in the bathroom. "Aehm, Flosi, do you have a present for Princess Adriana? Perhaps I can share the costs?" He sounded like taken by surprise. Flosi thought when saying "Of course Ive a nice nothing they call dress today. I couldnt afford it alone, anyway." *** "Wheres Thrandir?" Elaya asked Aurelius. "Jumping from branch to branch, like elves always do." And added after a stern look from Elaya "And hes searching for allies. The elves havent arrived til now. We could need them, for you elves are immune to paralyze. And as fas as we have seen, the who-ever-owns-the-tower has armies of undead. Too much for five heroes, even with mighty warriors like us." "We cant wait for them. Andrs, as I suppose, knows of our victory by now. Ive to prepare myself for him. You hold on the plan?" Laren was as serious as never before. Elayas sympathy was with Laren. They would fight much evil, but Laren perhaps she would never see him again. "Its time, the armies attack. Look. Im gone. Good luck to you all. May we meet again this life!" Laren disappeared without waiting for answers. *** Laren reappeared right in front of a gate outside the tower. Two large statues of unicorns stood to left an right of the gate. A gate that opened by itself this moment. Laren murmured some words to re-energize his protection from evil. His sight told him of no evil in front of the tower, but a tingling in his neck said the contrary. He was watched. He set his foot in motion and passed the gate. A sudden sound was heard! It sounded like a groan of a great beast. But Laren ignored it. Not a comforting thought, but he felt his mind focusing on his task. The years of learning discipline could show now, what they brought him. Laren went on. As he came near the great door, it opened, too. The darkness behind was suddenly lit by a dim light, perhaps of candles. he thought when stepping through the door. Behind him, somewhere far away, the sounds of battle found the way through the woods. He entered. *** Flosi was happy. Until now, only cannon fodder was bothering him. With each hit one less skeleton or mummy was on this plane of existence. He could fight like this the whole day. If the great evil thinks about tiring them, he would be disappointed. Not Flosi, and for sure not Aurelius. Elaya and Thrandir, that maybe another story. He looked over to them. Elaya held two glowing blades in her hands. She whirred through the lines of undead like a storm, cleaving arms and legs and heads without slowing. Her blades whirred in a deadly dance, the light of the blades bizzare forms in the dark mists. Flosi sent a light spell on some trees around them for better fighting conditions, but somehow the mist itself radiated darkness. So they fought under dim light. Enough for Flosi. He used his hammer with professional ease. Everytime an undead tried to take a move forward, it wasnt anymore. But now they changed the tactic, it seemed. Thrandir shot fiery bolts of death into the third line of them to decimate the reinforcements. The skeletons were nearly all destroyed. They were easy, but they had no mind. He hit again some undead. But it held against the damage taken! Flosi was surprised. The monster countered. A burning but cold pain shot along the right side of Flosi when the jagged blade of the whight came through his defense. The cold sensation was a sure sign he slowly lost his spell of protection against draining. "Elaya, I need you some seconds!" Elaya didnt react immediately "yes -cough- in a second!" The flaming arrows concentrated behind his enemies now. Flosi retreated a few steps when Elaya took his melee opponents. Aurelius came nearer, too. He glowed in his whole person, the power of his gods channelling through him. At every strike of his blade, two enemies fell, one of them just crumbling to dust. Flosi knew. He not just shed light, but shed *holy* light, that kind that cancelled evil. Flosi cast the protection versus draining again and reentered the fight. The undead now had circled them and changed the combatants. "Elaya, that fire spell of Laren!". Elaya nodded and caught a wound because of the distraction, not her first. She jumed suddenly into the air, slowing in her movements, and hung in the air. She took something from her belt and let it fall. Aurelius saw that, gulped, and hastened to Flosi. The item fell to ground. A mighty thunder erupted along with a great explosion of fire, which slowly turned into a circle whil moving outward. The circle of fire just had a height of ten feet and a range of hundret, but because the undead pressed toward the heroes, the undead nearest to them had no place to retreat! They crumbled to ash and in few seconds the heroes stood in a clearing. A clearing in the midst of more undead. Elaya sunk to the ground and entered the styled fighting position again. To the left an right of her, Aurelius and Flosi stood untouched of the spell. Aurelius sent a prayer to his gods and again some advancing enemies crumbled by the holy light. But they advanced further. *** "Finally a human made it to my tower. Be welcome, at least for short time." A dark figure spoke from across the great hall Laren just entered. Dim light shone here but no source was visible. "Youre Laren. I heard your friends speak about you. The elf and the human who roam the woods few days. They say youll beat me." The figure chuckled roughly. "Now, Im Andrs. Im the master of this tower, as you may have mused. Im greatly pleased to meet you." "The pleasure is mine, for I visit my now home the first time." Laren replied. "Now, answer me a few questions before. You arent a former apprentice to a wizard called Antaros by chance?" "I was." Andrs nodded. His old face was harsh, like that an old vampires would be. Handsome but VERY old. His fingers were long and delicate. He wore a black robe of an old style. "And here is a portal located, which can be used to travel to the Plane of Dreams or to the Plane of Nightmares?" "Wrong. It can be used for both. Antaros did realize that and tried to close it. Too late." "Ah, yes. That I wanted to know. Now, are we to fight or do you want to leave in peace, Andrs?" The answer was not spoken aloud. It manifested in front of Laren. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 03:05:11 -0000 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Paul George Dooley Subject: Re: war machine MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Furneaux" To: Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 9:26 PM Subject: Re: [MYSTARA] war machine > I agree. but it describes a full army better. That's why yopu use magic just before engagement to give you the maximum benefit of a disrupted enemy. Unless the battle happens totally by suprise you usually have several days to prepare. As for those countries which field massed units of low level mages well, unless the commanders are imbeciles, they should have quite a few pre-prepared magical tricks. > Magic is a difficult issue thats for sure though. > Under the war machine rules heroic actions give you > bonuses, It would be nice to be able to have in > battle, circumstantial bonuses for heroics. We're looking at 40 points added to BFR when anyone of Thincol's calibre leads them. That's a two level increase in troop class alone unless you have troops of good or better class initially. It could be up to an 88 point increase in the force's BR which is due to ONE individual. Seems a pretty good defenition of a hero to me. > sounds reasonable, but how do you define attacked in > the flank and rear if not in iondividual units. > Logic and sucessful use of Military tactics skill usually suffices. When needed a quick sketch of the field of combat and placement of the forces is helpful. Occasionally it's a get out the terrain on an 8' by 4' table and actually move the troops around. It would be nice if you could just give a rough size of this elite force and then I'll rip it apart quite easily. The best chance a small elite force has is defending a stronghold, even then only if your opponent wants the place afterwards. Don't forget that even a 10% loss is rounded up so it's more than fair to watch the officers tumbling too. The loss of just one of those officers in the small elite force will have a much greater effect than in a larger force. Most of his troops will still be alive in the little force, actually reducing the forces cohesiveness since you need a minimum ratio of officers to men to get the officer bonus to BFR. There's also a additional system for air fleet combats out there somewhere, I think it's in either Dawn of the Emporers or Champions of Mystara. I'm not too fond of running mass combats in my game, but I've done it before. Generally, I draw up all the unit stats on each side and then do the die rolls to see how things will work out. This gives me a sort of outline/timetable to work from: unit A will destroy unit B and then be routed by unit C, etc. This is how things would go without any PC intervention. Of course, PCs are in the game to intervene and spoil everything. Presumably, the PCs will come to the rescue of allied units that are about to be destroyed, and opposing NPCs will do the same. This will eventually, of course, bring them into conflict with one another, allowing for dramatic showdowns in the midst of bloody chaos or corpse-strewn fields. All in all, it gives things a sort of cinematic, Lodoss-War type of feel. Paul makes a lot of valid points in his email, and I like what he has worked out. Since BR is calculated per unit, a clash of two armies is actually a series of smaller skirmishes strung together. Remember that battles are more than just two armies getting together on opposing sides of a field and duking it out. Even if the overall gist of the war is philisophical, from a tactical sense this still comes down to resource and land control. Thus, most units will be battling over various strategic points on the map, such as an important bridge, a grain store, etc. It's pretty rare for one unit to attack another simply for the purpose of wiping them out- there's usually some sort of objective. In the game, this gives some idea of how troop movements and the like will occur, even on a small battlefield with units of 10-20 men. I know from experience that one or two good spellcasters can totally disrupt the flow of things. Spells like cloudkill, fear, and circle of death seem to be made for mass combat situations, and can easily route or kill whole units. These PC and NPC actions should be taken into account individually of die rolls. Healing is also a bit tricky- I've generally just used the rule of thumb that a single cleric and totally heal one person per level, so a tenth-level cleric could totally revitalize a fallen unit. This assumes that all of the cleric's spells have been used and is better for NPCs (PC clerics should be healing fallen leaders and the like). M. A statesman is a dead politician. But I think that the main issue would be deciding upon a new time unit for those mass battles, as, using smaller troops, tactical movement during battles would take an important role (as opposed to WM, which just takes general strategies at the beggining of a confrontation). The exact span of the time unit would depend on how big or small the divisions of armies are going to be. On the Sea Machine, it does not appear on GAZ4, GAZ4 has its own wargame-like rules to use with counters provided in the book (I think they are quite compatible with the X10 wargame), and IIRC there is a small reference of how conversions can be made back and forth with the Sea Machine, which is first featured in module M1 and then reproduced in DotE. GAZ9 just has rules on sailing, and effects on ships of things like storms, as well as a lot of info on trade and different kinds of ships beyond those presented in the Expert rules, but no Sea Machine, unless I'm getting messed up with my copy. My name is Ramses Ramirez (alias:Lancer), another newcomer adventurer to the Mystara Mailing List. It is a pleasure to join you all :) I just had a question that I have been thinking about that I feel has never really been addressed in Mystara canon materials but I feel is important to the richness and historical depth of Mystara: It seems like there really aren't famous adventurers (like Drizzt or Elminster of FR, Raistlin of DL)except for the possible exception of Bargle the Infamous and the conspicously well-known leaders of nations such as Thincol and Eriadna the Wise. Looking at the PWAs and even Joshuan's Almanac, I have noticed that most of these famous NPCs are really rulers of realms and not ACTUAL adventurers.A big difference. The only exception I found was in Joshuan's Almanac where they did have a very small listing of heros/villains but to my disgust, many of these "adventurers" were more like magic-user/cleric scholars performing research prjects rather than actual adventurers. My question is then are there any really renowned TRAVELLING adventurers/villains in Mystara?...Including adventurers that are STILL active? If there are not has there ever been any work done to detail either contemporary (approx. AC 1000)NPCs or historical NPCs in that regard? Finally, I do realize that IMHO a lot of the above can be unfortunately attributed to the lack of novels (which would describe these heroic/villanous NPCs) that Mystara has spawned in comparision to the myriad number of books written for both Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. It does annoy me that I really wish more novels could have been made for our world. I think the adventurer plays a much less prominent role in Mystaran society, which is more realistic/medieval than the sword-n-sorcery-melodrama-fantasy of FR/DL. As a result, the sweeping events of history are more realistic too, based on the gradual rise and decline of kingdoms rather than the influence of major personalities. Some individuals obviously play big roles historically - Alphaks, Zendrolion, Al-Kalim, Atztanteotl - but the sole hero obviously can never have the influence of the nation-builder and will vanish into the realms of myth if their remembrance survives at all. Also, why would someone wander the globe when national allegiance is so prevalent as is ethnic pride? If someone is a really suicidal type, they can find plenty of adventure in many armies or within their homeland. There obviously is room for adventurers, but thankfully they are rare, making the PCs heros instead of run-of-the-mill parties. I think you're right, as Mystara was adventure-oriented, most of the heroes in history are supposed to be PCs. Nevertheless, there are a few exceptions: *Claransa the Seer, originally a pregenerated PC, she does not rule any land (excepting her own tower, I guess) and she's expent a whole life of exploration. *Old Haldemar, of course. He came back to the Imperial fold just recently and, for the most part of pusblished materials, just lived an intense adventuring life (and the PA series is the closest thing Mystara-wise to the big novel series of other settings) *Rori Barbarrossa, the explorer from module X1 whose log is found by PCs *Kelteb Zherben, the "cleric of Balthac" in War of the Immortals: gets duped by Entropic Immortals, sabotages an Alphatian installation in the HW, then becomes a fighter with a deathwish, visits the gladiatorial training grounds in Thyatis, that's a major adventurer! That's just a few which came to my head; I think that the GAZ supplements include a few "just adventuring" characters, not tied to rulership. If there are not has there ever been any work done to detail either contemporary (approx. AC 1000)NPCs or historical NPCs in that regard? Most adventurers would at some point settle down, and become rulers, or reach Immortality, if they are really successfull, or get themselves killed. The idea of long-term wandering heroes is quite uncommon in Mystara (perhaps because it draws more from the RW than from fantasy literature), even the premade characters of many CM and M level adventures are rulers or heads of Guilds, Temples, etc. An Elminster-type would have reached immortality centuries ago. The only (known) Mystaran characters who fulfill this role are probably the wizard Gargantua and Haldemar of Haaken. Yes, but it is also due to the fact that high-level D&D game involved a lot of dominion ruling, something which would be quite uncommon on, say, Krynn. Adventuring types on Mystara tend to be lower-level, and therefore less legendary than their Torilian or Krynnish counterparts. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@fusberta.elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles/index.htm ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 18:22:24 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Mystara's historical/present NPCs and villains MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Ramses Ramirez wrote: >> Hello everyone!<< Hi, and welcome! >> It seems like there really aren't famous adventurers (like Drizzt or = Elminster of FR, Raistlin of DL)except for the possible exception of = Bargle the Infamous and the conspicously well-known leaders of nations = such as Thincol and Eriadna the Wise. << First off, I'm thankful there's no Elminster in Mystara. ;) It has often = been said that Mystara is appealing because there are no =FCber-dudes. = Most of the powerful people of Mystara have become Immortals, as has = been mentioned by others. These PC and NPC > actions should be taken into account individually of > die rolls. Now this seems wrong. does anyone know why if magic is so all powerful it is so underutilized in mystarian mass combat. I have some ideas. Having played some wargames, magic can be a bitch. But I'd rather not have a mage anyway, just make sure you kill theirs. what you can have insted of a mage is to me just as useful. Fast troops, artillery and longbows take out an unprotected magic user pretty fast. given the serverly limited no. of high level magic users in the world, one that is interested enough to participate in a battle is fairly rare (Alphiatia included for reasons described later) low level mages have few spells and die easily. I don't see them going into battle in a hurry. say a fireball at a unit of tower sheilds would in reality take out maybe 2 ranks. 3 if your lucky. remember the rules for suit armour, I think this is a simmilar defence mecanism, just a bigger version. This means about 20 men. In a small army it is important, in a big one, doesn't matter. cloudkill and such allow for greater damage but also more risk, and more time to get out the way. It'll brefly break up formation and in a big army will not do too much damage. I would also stress the optional rules for Mana manipulation that are on shawns site. Thus any spell could backfire and create problems for your own army. (you sommon a posionous cloud and just as you are setting it on it's way it moves towards you, you see three drained but happy looking wizards stairing at you. If I remember correctly low level wizards are pretty good at it too. IIRC About Alphainian magic users it is stated that they don't gennerally join the army and generally persue personal interests insted. Thus it is only when it is threaterned and/or angry that Alphatia's full might is seen. But if that doesn't happen they only have a slightly better base of millitary magic users then the rest of the world. But don't forget their normal troops arn't that good, so there's a balance. > Healing is also a bit tricky- I've > generally just used the rule of thumb that a single > cleric and totally heal one person per level, so a > tenth-level cleric could totally revitalize a fallen > unit. In RW middle ages and ancient warfare, the biggest limitation of two armies searching to engage was that, unless they wanted to meet, it was almost impossible to find each other in the wilderness (there are some famous RW cases of armies not finding their opponents for a longer than intended time). Thus, the standard method of resolving a battle was to speed for a vantage point in a clear open field (that's why we speak of battlefields): the army which had better marching skills and arrived earlier chose the most vantageous (usually highest) place and the fray began. Of course, there were ambushes and skirmishes, but both sides employ that kind of commited troops, so, unless some general was disastrous or gullible, or a force was under strain, they did not play such a big role. I'm speaking of mass battles, not guerrilla wars or sieges, of course. It was quite easy for an army to avoid engagement for a long time, and skipping away at night if outnumbered was a very recurrent maneouver. (fighting at night, though, was normally disastrous, as there were no means to take enemies apart from allies, and that's hand-to-hand combat, not shooting out of a trench). Most fights took place when both sides were confident enough of their power, or when one of them was desperately cornered by a big number of enemy forces in a hide and go seek game of sorts. the only important case of ambushing would be cutting down and menacing supply lines (foraging areas and water sources). This brings us to Mystara: 1) almost any nation deploying a field army may use scrying, detect evil, flying mounts or vessels for scouting, or a mix of all of them. 2) Illusion and teleporting magic can create ambushes even where terrain features don't permit so. 3) light magic (not to speak of races and monsters which see in the dark) can let armies attack (and hopefully defend) at nightime or press an offensive non-stop. 4) creation magic can lessen the dependency of troops on foraging activities and supply points; air transport also contributes to this. 5) magic power and magical vesses offer really powerful far-range bombing options So, if you take into account all of these features and compare them with modern RW technology, you can find out that Mystaran warfare would be closer to XXIst century RW warfare (I mean, for magically developed countries, like Alphatia, Thyatis, Glantri and even others such as Darokin, Karameikos and Ylaruam) and, in some issues, even superior. War Machine on the other hands, depicts classical "field battles", that's why it may feel lacking in some respects. Wow, this was too long... The wizard could see the strength of his muscles, the wit in his eyes, and the agility of his limbs. They had arrived a couple of days ago in Draco and had just started to investigate in the old suburb where the woman had lived...Waynet thouight they had no chance to discover where the boy could be but for more security Waynet had trasported him in a more hidden place. With these thoughts in his mind Waynet reached "The Broken Sword Inn" and entered by the woodden door. He hailed with a gesture the innkeeper then he reached a room upstairs...he was trembling to think to his master... The door was empty except for a chair and a very big mirror. Waynet sitted on the chair then with a couple of gestures the mirror started glowing. After few moments the mirror showed the imagine of a man: Guran Bonnar the Master of the Black Cabal of Draco, the most powerful mage of all Stonewall. He was a middle aged man with grey short hair. He ws extremely slim with two red eyes and two very long and slim hands. Guran watched silently Waynet then he spoke: "Why did you move the boy? doing so you had stopped his training. I've ordered you to train him as quick as possible..." "An unexpected problem has just appeared" replied sheepishly Waynet Guran seemed to get a little angry "What kind of problem?" he asked closing a little his unnatural red eyes "N..Not..Nothing that cannot be...cannot be resolved in a couple of days, Master" Waynet had always been scared by Guran's glance. "Better to you if it you're saying the truth" said Guran and he closed the link. Guran silently cursed. He hoped Waynet had told the truth for he couldn't fail his mission. Guran couldn't lose the boy or all he had dreamnt for till that moment...all the desires of his entire life would have been broken out..."Damn it! sooner that boy will become a mage sooner I will be safe". Then he started trembling. It had always happened when he had to talk with his Master, expecially when he hadn't good news to bring to him. With a couple of gestures the mirror glowed then he showed the face of another man: he was really ageless with long and dirty black hair. A lot of scars were on it...scars not made by weapons but by some magical experiments...Guran shuddered while looking at Barimoor, perhaps the most powerful alphatina mage...maybe even more powerful of all the Grand Council itself... "Why do you disturb me from my studies, rat?" Barimoor's voice sounded awful in Guran's ears "Well, My Lord..." "Finallly is the boy ready?" Barimoor interrupted him "Er....how can I say....mhm....no My Lord" "NOOOOOOOO?????????????????????" "We've to face an unexpected problem, but nothing of really important" cryed Guran. "Don't joke with me, worm. Succed in your mission and you'll be rewarded in my kingdom, fail and you'll be damned for the eternity!!!!!!!!!!" shouted the terrible Barimoor. "YES MY LORD, YOUR DESIRES WILL BE FULFILLED!!" screamed for the fear Guran but only when he had finished he realized Barimoor already had gone away. In the depths of the Alayisian Desert Barimor said to himself with a low, deep voice: "Bastard pawns...they cannopt even keep hidden a boy...I must just hope there will be no more problems...I must fulfill His orders..." Then with a couple of gestures he made the mirror glowing, while he started shuddering, fearing for His wrath... Who was He? How could His wrath be great? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 17:30:03 -0800 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: "David S. > 1. There are some NPCs. Several people have mentioned NPCs like Haldemar or Claransa, so it's not as if they don't exist. 2. A lot of succesful adventurers eventually became Immortals, which is why there are a *LOT* of Immortals! Given their importance, I don't find it so odd that people of Mystara would tend to forget those who did not reach Immortality. 3. Most of the published Mystara material was based on the various nations, so the NPCs were mostly those associated with the individual nation, which would obviously not include adventurers gallivanting all over the Known World :) 4. I actually agree with you, which is why I sent a list of historical dead NPCs to this list about a year ago and suggested that people add more NPCs to it. Some, like Caroletti, did, but we never moved much further with the project. What I tend to do is make a list of NPCs from the various Dungeon (or other) adventures I play IMC who survive and then make those adventurers from that point on... If you want to see the NPCs we did, you can find it on Shawn Stanley's site, , under 'NPCs'. Then find the various 'Historical dead NPCs' entries. Then make some of your own and send them here - I always like to read about new NPCs myself! >Finally, I do realize that IMHO a lot of the above can be unfortunately attributed to the lack of novels (which would describe these heroic/villanous NPCs) that Mystara has spawned in comparision to the myriad number of books written for both Forgotten Realms and >Dragonlance. Very true, I fear... > It does annoy me that I really wish more novels could have been made for our world. > Yes, well, we could always write something ourselves! (Some of us have actually written short stories off late). It would be a pretty big undertaking, though. >Thank you for your time everyone and again it is a pleasure to join you all, > Always happy to see some new blood here (down Morphail!) :) - The Stalker Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message.
