Philip Ramsey MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit PHILIP RAMSEY 22nd Vatermont 979, Akorros, Republic of Darokin. History: Philip Ramsey is the son of two commoneers. He worked for years as an apprentice to a smith, and became soon an incredibly strong young man. When he was 16, he was noticed by an adventurer named Lothian, who asked him to join him if he knew a little about fighting. Ramsey had a little knowledge of fighting with the sword, so he joined without a thought the adventurer, as he was bored by his life as a smith. Lothian was a disciple of the Thyatian subversive Fabritius Luscinia, and he soon indoctrinated his young friend into hating the political institutions, State and society, and filled him with the desire to throw down the institutions. However, Lothians job had been too good: disliking Lothian because he was affiliated with the Ten Thousand Fists of the Khan, Ramsey left, living thereafter free of any political bond, an anarchist uninterested in society. He earns his living by adventuring for those who has a need for him, especially aiding those who have problems with society, the lawless, and so on. Ramsey met Kull in AC 1001, soon after he had decided to become willingly a wereboar after having saved a small harmless community from adventurers who wanted to kill them and accuse them of thefts they had committed. He hasnt changed his living style since the encounter with Boar and the birth of Never the Same, and, like Hyatt, he has sometimes refused to participate to the groups missions. He doesnt have a home, and relies on his friends wherever he may roam. Personality: Ramsey is a true chaotic neutral. He doesnt actively hates society, but he dislikes it and cannot comprehend how people can live under bonds that really doesnt exist, like he did in his youth as a smith apprentice. His quest in life is to help people who live outside society to defend themselves from it, and eventually to bring the downfall of some parts of society. Ramsey is a friend of Kull and Hyatt, but doesnt like Buzbys involvement with organized subversive organizations, nor Westons ideals. Appearance: Ramsey is really a giant boar: he is nearly two meters tall, a little overweight, but icredibly strong. He has short blonde hair, blonde beard and green eyes. He seems a very savage man, always wandering around with adventuring clothes, uncaring if he is in the city or the wilderness. He likes drinking and eating, and is very fond of womens company, wheter they are whores or girls who are captured by his savage, powerful and a little animal look (and they are not few- he has a lot of girlfriends in different towns of Darokin and Karameikos!). Stats (OD&D, AC 1010): Wereboar 3rd - Fighter 13th. Path of the Defiler (Entropy) Trial: The Defiler must search for an artifact belonging to each of the other four spheres, and either destroy it or corrupt it in some manner.this will be a major undertaking, the details of which will be decieded by the immortal sponsor. Quest: The Defiler must recover a lost or stolen artifact of entropy and return it to his sponsor. He must also defile a temple of each of his sponsors immortal enemies. This must be a temple in an urban area not some rural shrine. Testimony: The Defiler must force twelve people into his worship and lay down the method of worship, his sponsor will grant their clerical powers for now. Each follower must attain twelfth level while in the defiler's service. The Defiler must also change the land in some corrupting manner for a thousand miles in diameter. Task: The Defiler must challenge eight members of each class available to his race, to a one on one duel, each must be at least 25th level or above. He must either kill them or corrupt them. He must also be acknowledged the superior of all in the area he altered. He must erect a vast temple to himself, so that his worship will have a focus point from which to spread. so what do you think. mortus. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 20:24:42 -0000 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: jason o'brien Subject: Re: how to get rid of the Hybris virus? Du Lanza was soon sent to the Great School of Magic, where they recognized in him a big magical potential. Du Lanza begun studying, but after his twelve years he began to show hints of a decadent and intimately presumptuous personality. He began to see with disdain his teachers, because he knew already things they told him. He began to see his friends as pitiful, and began indulging in physical pleasures like drugs and soon sex. He became a refined dandy, a gentleman always in first line offering expensive and luxurious parties, helped in this by the immense wealth his father had gathered (thanks to several good handles with Darokinian merchants). Du Lanza began adventuring at twentyone, spending his time mostly in the company of henchmen, but sometimes with other adventurers, that quickly abandoned him when they had enough of his egotic personality. The abandoning of the Great School and his presumption has however prevented him from getting to the deepest knowledge of magic. Richard became involved in the late days of the Wrath of the Immortals War with some worshippers of a "demon-dragon", Kthurbash, and managed to open a gate that made possible his appearance on Mystara in 1011, but was nearly slain to death if it wasn't for the intervention of a party of adventurers among whom was the human fighter Arimor. After being rescued, Du Lanza abandoned his plans to become Baron, and abandoned politics for some time. As Kthurbash killed nearly all his followers before returning to his home plane (wherever that may be), Du Lanza finds himself without a goal, and fears that someone could discover his involvement in Kthurbash's appearance in Glantri. Just to keep in line with his personality, he has begun to give again big parties, and is indulging in carnal pleasures more than before. Personality: Irritating, decadent, effeminated, presumptuous, annoying, sharp-tongued, charming and voluptuous, Du Lanza is the perfect dandy, who indulges in his decadent activities and enjoys morbid passions. He loves dark magic, vampires, has a tower in Boldavia and one in Nouvelle Averoigne, has a lot of lovers of all types and features (from aristocratic elves to farmer's daughters), and is a total narcissist. However he seems also to be irresistible to women. Appearance: Du Lanza has curly blonde hair, kept half-long, green eyes, delicate features, pale skin and long, slim fingers. He is of medium height, very slim, and likes to dress in white or black, with vaporous and comfortable dresses. He has a black and golden cloak that he never leaves, and that is in fact a cloak of protection +3. Stats (OD&D, AC 1012) Human Magic User 13. Some folks I know thought that Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic were degrees of good or evil, such that LG is the "most good", then NG, and CG was only "kind of good". My take is that Good, Neutral and Evil describe the character's motives and inner nature, while the Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic axis describes how they went about accomplishing their motives (with Lawful being an orderly, regimented, organized approach with an emphasis on society, and with Chaotic being disorganized and in favor of individual freedoms and rights. LN would indicate organization and rigidity without regard to good or evil, while CN would be a desire to live one's live according to his own whim's and desires w/o societal constraits, but also, w/o an overly strong moral compass). I could elaborate further, but I'm not sure if the list wants a huge dissertation on alignment right now. In the case of Klagendorf, I would say that he would have been Lawful all along since the Heldann Freeholds were probably a CG "nation". They were a dis-organized group of various villages w/o any central authority who highly valued the rights of the individual. Wulf, as a Lawful, would have seen a need for a strong central gov't and invaded to change the staus quo. From his perspective as a Lawful, this would have been just what the Chaotic Heldanners needed. In short, Lawfuls like order and central authority, while Chaotics value individual rights. So, yes, I think a terrorist could be LN, especially if he belonged to an organization that's goal was to impose order on a region. But a smaller band of freedom fighters struggling against an established, orderly central gov't would more likely be Chaotic. An example from U.S. history would be the Vietnam War. Those in favor of the gov't's position in fighting the war, doing it for their country, etc. would have been more in the Lawful camp. On the other side, the hippy protesters ("the gov't has no right to force us to fight in a war that we think is wrong!") were standing up for their individual freedom of choice which would be toward Chaotic. > ******************************************************************** > The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp > The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ > To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM > with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 03:47:12 +0100 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: The Stalker Organization: Angelfire (http://email.angelfire.mailcity.lycos.com:80) Subject: Re: The usual IC banter (was: NPC: Flosi Hammerhand) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit On Fri, 2 Feb 2001 13:40:36 Caroletti wrote: >> Oh yes, that's right, you finally learned - didn't give you much cover against those Fireballs, right? My favorite regions include Minrothad, Darokin, Shadow Elven Caverns, Yavdlom, and I'll throw in Robrenn and Herath, too. In the HW it would be Milenia, Nithia, and the Merry Pirate Seas. I'd recommend against having your front page in flash, especially for the folks with slow access it can make getting onto the site rather tricky and time consuming. Better to have the flash accessable to those who want to see it (like me!) and not forced upon those who wont be able to view it. These images can then be overlayed onto maps, or other player handouts. Anyway, I've already gotten the runes from the Five Shires gaz mapped, as well as the Auld Gnomish alphabet from The Norther Reaches gaz. I know there are also Northmen runes in that gaz (and I may work on those next). The other published alphabets/writing systems that I'm aware of are : The Nithian hieroglyphics system An Azcan calendar system (IIRC) So my question for the list is this: Are there any other published Mystaran alphabet/rune systems that might lend themselves to a translation program? And of course, if there are, where might I find them? Thanks, John ===== Rule #46. If an advisor says to me "My liege, he is but one man. Well, I happen to have already written a similar utility for my dissertation, in javascript: you write a line of text in standard latin-1 alphabet, and a array function turns the string into different UniCode sets for browser display... well, now I just have Hebrew, but, with the big range of exotic alphabets which Unicode 3.0 offers -runes were included, IIRC- that's a lot!! For all of you who want to put exotic RWbased alphabets, i really recommend http://www.unicode.org And, if anyone is interested, i can send you my small Javascript utility, you can alter the function and array control, as well as the target unicode pointers, to fit your taste for the exotic or arcane! The numeral systems article contains some images about the numbers in some exotic systems, or a description of how they are constituted that could easily be converted into pictures and worked into a conversion utility. The Alphatian language article doesn't contain pictures, though there is a list of the letters, and some explanations on how they are woven into magical language in the aristocratic Alphatian (something probably undoable with a simple conversion utility, though it would be an interesting project), and the mundaner Alphatian. FYI the Alphatian language in the tome article is based on RW Greek, Hebrew, various Babylonian-era languages (though not Assyrian), celtic and nordic runes, plus some fantasy and Mystaran canon and non-canon elements. ===== ___________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau http://www.geocities.com/hmusseau/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am working on a new Mystara campaign. In a nutshell, an Old One (the creator) reveals himself to a cleric and appoints the cleric to start a new monotheistic church which does not recognize the immortals as true gods, but which does recognize them as caretakers of Mystara. The purpose of this is to shake the immortals out of their complacency and bring about reform, not to replace them. At first everyone assumes the cleric is just another fanatic who casts spells by the strength of his alignment, but after a while immortals notice that he is getting his power from an external, unknown source. Once the immortals figure out that an Old One is involved and granting spells to a cleric, they become polarized and tensions rise to the breaking point. Certain factions will attempt to destroy the cleric and the new church. Eventually this culminates in the events of WotI. The cleric of course knows nothing of this. He has in fact been brought from another world, told only that "I have a mission for you". He will probably be shocked to learn that the people here worship "mere immortals" rather than true gods, as well as by the fact that immortality is even attainable. (The players are new to Mystara, so being from another world gives them an in-game reason for ignorance.) I had originally intended to start in AC1000, with the cleric joining and reforming the CoK who already have some unusual theology. But it occurred to me that I could instead start in AC965 or even 949, send the cleric to Machetos where he starts a fledgling church under the tolerant rule of Stefan's father (anyone know his name?) A young Stefan is an early convert and champion of this new faith. Sherlane is another promising young convert. When persecution from other immortals starts Thyatis frowns on the new religion, and the subsequent founding of the Duchy of Karameikos is partially motivated by wanting to get the heretics out of Thyatis, as well as religious folk looking for an isolated haven to relocate. Stefan takes Traladara and the entire church goes with him, becoming the CoK. Having founded an entire church and helped set up a kingdom, the cleric may be a candidate for immortality and the patron of the CoK. I like this because it lets the player do something really major - founding a new church and taking part in the establishment of a new kingdom, plus adventuring in a Mystara that is not quite so civilized. The only drawback here is that there is little information on Karameikos around AC960, so I'd be winging it. Also the region is far less settled: communities are small and roads are bad. Ther is no Black Eagle, no Traladaran freedom fighters, no royal campaign to push back the goblins, etc. So I'm looking for ideas for the period 960-1000. Anyway, I'd love to hear other ideas and comments, especially from those who are knowledgeable about timelines and such. I love it. And I think it makes an excelent elaboration on canon. I might actually have to use some of these ideas as my campaign is sitting around AC984, and not going anywhere fast. (oh and in karamiekos). My adventurers have formed a large barony by the border of thyatis extending into the dymrak forest. Constant schirmishes with goblins hinder things and the rulers keep pretty busy, and throw around a bit of money. Their barony has been in place for about 4? years and has expanded slowly and deviously, but the general populous has no idea or complaints. more sly political moves. So if you need some background for times and from ac980 on I could be of some assistance. > I like this because it lets the player do something > really major - > founding a new church and taking part in the > establishment of a new > kingdom, plus adventuring in a Mystara that is not > quite so > civilized. > > The only drawback here is that there is little > information on > Karameikos around AC960, so I'd be winging it. I don't think it'd be that bad, given jenn's mini-gaz and th major events of history, the detail's should just fall into place. I might sergest having a look at the veiled society, although I don't have it I believe it deals with early karamiekos, (someone else want to jump in?) My personal sergestion is that the mini-gaz represents the traldar at about 800AC and since then they have evolved into a more modern people making the conquest of their civilization less harsh as the civilization level differences are smaller. > Also > the region is far > less settled: communities are small and roads are > bad. There were some posts a while ago about stefan and his motives. I don't know if you were here for it but it was quite a ruckus. Anyway some good ideas came out of it and some interesting campaign flavour notes, particually cantering around the feelings, actions, and motives of stefan, his followers and his enemies. If you weren't here for it, don't remember it, or would like a compalation of the good ideas, then I could send you something. I wouldn't do like you describe here (which is not to say there is anything wrong with what you plan, just that I would emphasize it differently), but there is a lot of potential in that plot. I guess we could bring up the whole Gareth plot again about this one. That would actually make sense, because the Old One, 'Gareth'?, would then act because of the folly of the Immortals during WotI. It's not so problematic that Sherlane's religion changes (in canon his Immortal is Chardastes IIRC), but Stefan now becomes a person imposing religious ideas upon the Traladarans rather than a 'benevolent tyrant', and his nation becomes a theocracy (at least it sounds like one to me) > When persecution from other >immortals starts Thyatis frowns on the new religion, and the >subsequent founding of the Duchy of Karameikos is partially motivated >by wanting to get the heretics out of Thyatis, as well as religious >folk looking for an isolated haven to relocate. When Stefan moved to old Traladara, the Thyatians mostly continued to think of it mostly as 'part of the empire'. There was no threat of retaking it, but Stefan must have thought this was a real possibility to make his alliance with Alphatia during the WotI war. In the time before the war, Thyatis could have easily retaken Karameikos, had they felt it necessary to do so... This is the reason why I hesitate to change things too much - it has consequences that I have to deal with, and I find that it's just easier to move the campaign focus to some unexplored area of Mystara for me, like the largely unexplored territories of Skothar... >I like this because it lets the player do something really major - >founding a new church and taking part in the establishment of a new >kingdom, plus adventuring in a Mystara that is not quite so >civilized. > You think it is now? Well, we were playing 3e in Greyhawk -- it just sort of evolved from some demo adventures we were running. But I hated running in Greyhawk, and we decided to switch back to BD&D anyway, so I decided to "jump" them to Mystara. The two characters who made the jump are both 4th level. Another had a 1st level dwarf, so made up a 1st level Mystic instead, a native of Mystara, which is handy for filling in background info. > So if you need > some background for times and from ac980 on I could be > of some assistance. Sounds interesting. I think I'm going to start in 960. The Mystic decided he was a Thyatian who hung around in court, doing acrobatics for the entertainment of the rich and famous. The Alphatian war gives him a good reason to be in Traladara. > I don't think it'd be that bad, given jenn's mini-gaz > and th major events of history, the detail's should > just fall into place. I was thinking that the Veiled Society might have its roots back in the Thyatian occupation, though perhaps not so organized as it will be in Stefan's time. So I'll probably include it. The mini-gaz (and the Darine) is really nice and provides lots of material to play with. Has anyone made a map of the Traladaran towns and clans prior to 970? > There is always a black eagle..... :-) > There were some posts a while ago about stefan and his > motives. The scenarios described in CM1 don't consider the HKs. It is Alp. vs. Thyatis for control of Norwold. The War of the Crown could be considered a territorial war in an "outlying area" before WotI, or could be played out during that conflict. It's important to set-up all of the NPC dominions and forces for it to run properly. As a "campaign adventure," CM1 should take quite a bit of game time and real time to play out, with lots of unscripted scenarios happening in between the main events of the module. If you want more info, let me know. I used CM1 as the basis for my current long-running campaign. This brings up an interesting question, actually. When did the polar openings come to exist? One could argue that the apocalyptic destruction of Blackmoor might have created the northern polar opening, but then where did the southern come from? I always had the impression that it was pretty much implied that the polar openings had always been there, but the fact that Blackmoor became the north pole (and it had to because that made the elven homeland, Grunland, into the south pole and caused their great migration - there are consequences if we make changes here) seems to be in utter contrast with that. I never read that the Blackmoor society had a huge, gaping hole right in the middle of it! ;) >Sorry if this an RTFM question. He provides a haven to the CoK, but does not persecute the CoT or force anyone to convert. Really this is no different than the way things are presented in Gaz1, except that it adds some backstory and alters the CoK a little. Of course I don't think the Traladarans would see it that way. OTOH, I suppose Stefan *could* attempt to impose his religious views on the Traladarans, perhaps subtly. Overzealousness would not necessarily make him evil, but would add a character flaw and make him perhaps a little more interesting. (Without going to the extreme of 'Dark King of Karameikos') It would give more moderate CoK followers reason to feel sympathy for the Traladarans, and would heap fuel on the fires of rebellion. BTW, you said you wound "empasize it differently." What did you have in mind? I'll also have to review the postings and references to Gareth, now that you mention it. > > When persecution from other > >immortals starts Thyatis frowns on the new religion, and the > >subsequent founding of the Duchy of Karameikos is partially motivated > >by wanting to get the heretics out of Thyatis, as well as religious > >folk looking for an isolated haven to relocate. When Stefan moved to old Traladara, the Thyatians > mostly continued to think of it mostly as 'part of the empire'. Thyatis hasn't done anything. When I said 'Thyatis frowns on the new religion,' I meant that there is some hostility from existing churches, maybe even some ugly incidents, and various people in the empire are surprised and concerned about what is happening in Machetos. It's not that the empire is throwing the CoK out, the CoK is eager to relocate to a safe Haven, and Stefan offers one. Traladara is part of the empire, but it is a backwater province and well away from the more cosmopolitan cities of the empire, where it can't do much damage. I was thinking that it was still Stefan's idea, but getting rid of the CoK makes the deal sweeter for Thincol.
