I'll be buying it too. I may even run games set in it, because the
writers can't control how my games run, and I like to hop from world to
world - the fewer worlds I have to design, the better. :-)

The Eikab's Saga begin! This history can change your campaing and you =
wolrd! Safe yourself!
(I apology for bad englis)
The Pact.
The Saga of Eikab began in the year 990 A.C. in one small and squalid =
cell in the underground plans of the Palace of the prince of Belcadiz =
situated in Nueva Alvar, capital of this principality. Eikab was found, =
illicitly respect is to the laws that to the customs of the country, in =
one be of slavery submit to don Ralondo's will, monarch of this small =
elvish territory making part of the enchantocraty federation said the =
Principalities of Glantri1.
The reasons of this fact, and the events antecedents to this date, =
aren't still of our acquaintance. We instead know that prince Ralondo, =
gone up to the throne in the 858 A.C. after that his father King Alfonso =
of Belcadiz abdicated because he didn't approve many aspects of the =
process of foundation of the Principalities of Glantri. He was seriously =
sick from various years, a lot that, he had indicated since the year 892 =
A.C. its successor: the smaller daughter, dona Carnelia y Fedora2. Also =
of this evil, the particulars are ignored. But the various and diffuse =
voices that then circulated in the palaces of the Principalities, and =
the particular characteristics of the elvish race3, make to suppose us =
that pathology of psychological type was be a matter of one, caused =
probably from a one strong stress to govern the Alhambra's family in =
those difficult years.
The night of the 9 Gromdain of the month of Thaumont, Eikab, in his =
cell, received a secret visit of the first-born one of Ralondo: don =
Hippolito4. He had matured a conspiracy that would have had bring him to =
head of the family. He had carefully planned a surprise attack in order =
to prevent, like we said, his sister succeeded the father. He only =
remained to find the way to eliminate the old and sick prince.=20
Don Hippolito thought to Eikab, because he couldn't find a better hired =
assassin than one that she had approached daily the rooms of don =
Ralondo? The future patricide could also confide in the hatred that =
Eikab had for his landladies, beyond that in one promised of a future =
freedom, than it made it for a reason or purpose personal, in order to =
obtain the engagement of the slave to realize
the task.=20
The plan of don Hippolito after that night had been delineated with =
clarity and without great risks. The noble would have waited for that =
Eikab gave term to the life of its father before launch his personal =
guard to the onslaught of the rooms of dona Carnelia, for get him to the =
arrests and proclaim itself prince of Belcadiz. If all it had gone for =
the best, would have been one trifle to make to pass like illicitly the =
designation of the elf-women to princesa made from the father, using the =
pretext of his infirmity and others quibbles5. In failure case all the =
responsibilities were unloaded on a poor slave who had attempted to the =
life of the prince risking aware (or less, this did not import) the =
dead.=20
The hopes that Eikab succeeded in the enterprise were good. don Ralondo =
was old and its psychophysicists conditions for a long time were =
compromised, while Eikab was young, and don Hippolito had noticed as its =
physical dowries and intellectuals they were outside from the norm.
In particular they had hit it his fatigue strength and to the pain, =
things of which Eikab from various months to come had endured in =
quantity breaking the back to an ogre. However it remained only a point =
that would have put in difficulty captive - and these he pointed out it =
to the noble that evening - of forehead to the prince: the magic; if don =
Ralondo had had the time launch also an only spell all the plan it would =
be failed.
It was necessary a stratagem in order to obviate to the problem that was =
not little account. Don Hippolito determined not to go for the thin one: =
if Eikab must defend itself from the magic, would
have had learn that. So said, the noble found a solution and gave =
immediate and taken care of dispositions its allied one6. For all the =
month that follows this encounter the called being Eikab came begun to =
the secrets of Mysterious Science.
notes
1. The event that in particular made to decide (or more better, binged) =
king Alfonso than to leave the guide of its people was the famous action =
of the council of the noble ones that gained previous
the civil war, known as "The light of Rad". It was the legal transaction =
that settled the birth of the state, in how much placed like prejudicial =
for being noble - and therefore to have the political power - the being =
also a wizard. Complementarily one decided for the abolition of all the =
clerical orders and for the spillage of all the priests from the =
Principalities, moreover, from this moment in then the nobility title =
hierarchically most high it would have been that one of Prince.
King Alfonso found to have itself to accept al same time his (and of his =
descend) degrade of rank, and to having to above all operate one =
political antipopular against the elvish millenarian culture,
suppressing, for a will of a majority formed from humans (the race to =
which the elvish thought advanced naturally), the cults of Valerias =
Calithia, Mealidon etc arethat they had adopted from when they had =
allocated itself in the extreme West of the continent of Brun. All of =
this produced immediately one strongly tension between the small state =
and the other " new-principalities ", and as many strong inner tensions: =
""Alfonso, infuriated, resigns from the council and threatens to pull =
the elven lands out of Glantri. He quickly comes to realize that they =
will not let him go, Glantrian armies far outnumber his own. What's =
more, The elves want to be part of Glantri, with few exceptions (mostly =
clerics). Offered the title of Prince, King Alfonso refuses, and =
altogether abdicates. His son, Ralondo, assumes the title of Casato =
leader, but no King. He tried to decides what do, as pressure from =
Glantri Builds". J. Guerra, Belcadiz Gazetteer, Official Mystara =
Homepage, 1999, "History of Casato Alhambra"
2. Ibidem, "NPCs: Princess Carnelia' s duenas. ".=20
3. Is well knowing that the elves they are immune to the greater part of =
medical pathologies that hit the
others races; their organism in fact to could was damaged only from the =
physical violence, the magic, substances toxic or, in extremis from new =
virali shapes, bacterial or genetic for which they do not possess =
antibodies. All had to us from the mechanism of their evolution, that =
lowest rate reproduction goes to compensate they, granted to them one =
hope of exceptionally long life. Some students assert quite that an elf =
does not die of dead natural, but caught up a venerable age leave them =
community for destinations only known to the old in issue, perhaps, for =
joining with the natural elements.
4. In reality the visit was not carried out with the material encounter =
of the two. In that occasion don Hippolito used a particular shape =
(upgraded on parchment) of the spell Holography; projecting its =
fictitious image in the cell of the prisoner, but remaining the entire =
time in his rooms. In order to directly observe his interlocutor, the =
noble-elf used also a spell Eye of the Sorcerer.
5. Between which the fact that after the passing of the husband, Miguel =
de Fedora, happened in the 987 A.C., donates Carnelia would be due to =
wedding again for totally being able to be worthy to go up to the =
throne. Don Hippolito that knew the character well strong-willed person =
and decided of the sister, she counted just on this point in order to =
put in crisis "the infanta".
The only point weak person of this woman was just the love. The wedding =
with the Fedora was a state affair, but this - and after - Carnelia had =
a relation with a belcaditian adventurer called Armando del Rio =
Unfortunately in the 928 A.C. Armando was killed from a dragon; =
Carnelia, even if was wed, at only 108 years old received a trauma =
terrible, that it was also an incredibly profitable test in order to =
forge its character. Although this Carnelia he always feraciously =
remained faithful to these its feelings, and probably don Hippolito did =
not mistake in thinking that the sister would not have never accepted a =
third companion in its
life. Cfr. J. Guerra cit. "NPCs Pricess Carnelias Duenas"
Don Hippolito planned an intrigue indeed a lot detailed, in particular =
way care to the legal and psychological aspects of the intrigue. This =
can dared to us a misleading reflection on the elves of Belcadiz, =
because they culture and their charaterial tendencies introduced in the =
gazetter dedicated to the Principalities of Glantri, give the impression =
to us that these elves strongly are influenced from their warrior =
impulses ad that "they are better fast to put hand to the sword, than to =
use the brain".=20
So making reference always to the - meagre - information of the =
gazetter, this habit action of don Hippolito could turn out conflicting =
if not inexplicable. In a society where the pride and the honour appears =
the supreme values, that they must be always conquered defences and with =
the sword or the magic from war, don Hippolito not chip the frontal =
crash with his father and sister, nearly that account became that these =
are too much strong for he.
Is don Hippolito a coward? The point could also be, but isn't this. Is =
Hippolito a Chaotic-Evil, and that is behaved in this way, in evident =
breach with its cultural models? Not, this is to exclude categorically. =
That the Alhambra's are characterised from one ideology typically =
chivalrous and virile given of undeniable fact. However, two elements =
are at least others of which holding account. In the first place we are =
also always speaking about an ethnia elvish, than, like all the =
pertaining to this race, they enjoy a life much long-lived one and that, =
therefore, they think that it is a precious good not to waste. In the =
second place, the Principality of Belcadiz possesses one social, =
cultural and intellectual life of the highest level, pack-saddles to =
think next to the small details and the
wealth of festival the this state, or next to the great importance given =
to the luxury and refined objects.
Decidedly we find ourselves of forehead to society extremely developed, =
is relatively regarding the others societies of Mystara, than for =
itself, the presence of a high rate social evolution with to a foolish =
use of the public and private violence always difficulty remains =
verifiable. For recorded: the Germany of Hitler was of course a nation a =
lot developed social and technologically (cultural consummations, =
socialisation, mass media etc, removed their contains, of course), =
nevertheless it possessed a high rate violence inner that external. But =
it was just the first society that gave life, without previous, to a =
system of scientific use of this violence in a position to maintaining =
in order the social order of the country, and to guarantee to way they, =
and second the nazi views, a high degree of civilisation.
For Belcadiz the things are quite different speech, but not in the =
substance. The great emphasis that comes given to the duels to the first =
one or to the last blood, like resolution of the discords, so like means =
of reproduction of the social contract, is a false historian, or one =
over-simplified vision. The belcaditian elves have to disposition, =
thanks to the magic, many other means for prescribed their social =
relationships, like as an example, the spell "the Duel double" (J. =
GUERRA, Op.cit., " Belcadiz Spells "..idem) that it creates two " =
dopplelanger " of the fighters, that they resolve the discords in vece =
of wizard elves.=20
If the duel, the manifestations of intemperance and the perennial =
call-backs to the honour of the crews, also remain always one constant =
of the attitudes of the belcaditian this is one constant date from the =
cultural identity of this people, and they do not give the fact that =
these elves do not know other lifestyle with their similar ones or with =
races different. Therefore - we conclude returning to don Hippolito - we =
are of forehead to a society that has exceeded the threat of the =
directed physical embezzlement, one against the other, like instrument =
regulator of the social relationships, and so the political sphere (than =
is a sphere of social relationships but too big and complex of before) =
has enrich itself of other instruments, not last that one of the thin =
intrigue.
6. Exactly don Hippolito gave information to Eikab about a Magi Item =
that lies for year in a room of the castle, this should be useful for =
the task. This object was a portrait of a triptych named "The =
adventurer" painted and enchanted by the sorcerer Soledad Luna in the =
IX=B0 Century A.C.
The Adventurer shows a small group of four heroes that return from their =
first adventure. The party is formed by a human woman who brandishes a =
mace and brings on to a shoulder a shield and wearing a red clerical =
tunic; an elf with dark hair (therefore a belcaditian), the tiny shapes =
of a boy who carrying a heavy and unmistakable spell book and, at least, =
a warrior with red hair dressed by red and black.
don Hippolito revealed to Eikab the working of the object - thing very =
simple - was enough to gave a vocal order to any character because the =
target breathes life himself and took a real form to come out from the =
portrait.
This simulacrums could make all the action in their powers, in the =
Eikab's case, the young mage might bestow the rudiments of the magic =
arts. Only a particular escaping to the noble-elf: the evocation could =
be doing only once for month.
This wasn't a secondary problem, because Eikab might elude, during the =
night (with the complicity ofsome Hippolito's guards) the surveillance, =
bur after the dawn the simulacrum must return in the portrait, because =
hide it was impossible in to a castle where all the people knew the =
magic.
However, with alwais big surprise of the noble, Eikab easily resolved =
the problem without another help. With his extraordinary skills the =
prisoner could learned the spell Read Magic in only one nigh and he well =
thought to command to the simulacrum to cut with a nail the formulas of =
many other spells on the ground of his cell; the cutter were hide from =
the sight with the bed. So the continues of the study was very simply =
and without any risk.
If someone would receive the italian version can ask me.

Obviously the reason this world had no psionics or knowledge of them is
that all minds there are class VI and therefore immune. Including, of
course, the megalith itself so there are no psionics of ANY sort on the
planet at all. After all any psionic that interferes with the megalith can
be perceived as a psionic attack upon it.
Then there could be the fact that an Immortal has used PP to "Alter
Characteristics of a Plane" so that psionics just don't work, or each use of
psionic powers drains an equal number of hit points, but the loss is
PERMANENT. BTW don't mention that this is a permanent loss, just state the
failure of regeneration, healing magic and even wishes (it's a munchkin it's
bound to have at LEAST two saved up). Hopefully they'll try Cell Adjustment
or some such and kill themselves off.
None of the above alters the game in any way except for munchkin. There
are no foes specifically added to cope with it's excesses which the rest of
the party have no defence against, unfortunately an all to common remedy, no
need to try and remember all the additional rules and exceptions. In fact
they easily explain the reason why the munchkin wanted to go there in the
first place. No one has psionics because, either they just don't work, or
they're almost invariably fatal to use.

Hello MML!
I would be darn surprised if there is anyone on this list that lives in Florida, much less Orlando but I am graduating this May (YEAH!!!) and so I have time to DM again!!(YEAH!)I am VERY excited about starting a Mystara campaign utilizing AD&D 2nd edition rules(with some OD&D mixed in) set in Glantri and was wondering if anyone happening to live in the area would like to join my campaign? We are planning to start this summer say somewhere in mid May or early June. My campaigns are known for their balanced mixture of roleplaying, combat, puzzlesolving, and of course Mystaran Dominion-ruling. :) Upon entering my campaign I will then give you a Questionnaire immediately so that you can think through some questions and give me in essence your playing style and opinions. There are some things I have not finalized yet in my campaign and the output from yourself will really help me decide how to gauge our campaign that will suit your own style. Roleplaying is ALL about fun so the abo!
ve is an extremely crucial step in MAKING SURE YOU ARE HAVING FUN IN MY CAMPAIGN! If you are interested or wish to know more about my Mystara post here or email me at lancer@starwarsemail.com

Well, you know the core mechanic anyway. But that isn't really the
little details of the system. Little details like DCs for each skill,
feats, combinations of feats/skills (emergent complexity?),
spellcasting and the details of each spell, all the different
modifiers and options in combat, the intricacies of initiative and
movement and AoOs...
Choosing a skill at random: Handle Animal contains "hidden" rules for
the time it takes to perform, computing the DC (including formulas in
some situations), rules for various ways the skill can be applied,
rules for retry attempts, rules linking it to other skills and feats,
and a special rule for untrained attempts. All of these rules are
specific to this skill, and there are some patterns that resemble
other skills, the specific details are different.
Now multiply "all the little details" by some 50 skills, 50 feats,
300 spells, 10 character classes, combat, spellcasting, adventuring,
environmental...
Having a unified core mechanic does not eliminate details. In fact,
most games that employ a central mechanic seem to have *more* details
and *more* rules, as they apply that mechanic to different
situations. In play, you have to constantly refer to the appropriate
sections of the books to determine the correct rules, unless you (a)
have them memorized, or (b) decide to ignore them. That is much of
the appeal of a game like OD&D, and the whole point of Fudge:
simplicity. You don't have to check the skill description (if there
is one) because it has no special case rules: the GM just uses common
sense.
Personally I don't like to ignore rules, unless we have a specific
house rule that says "ignore it". If I'm going to ignore the details
and just rely on the core mechanic I might as well play Fudge. But
the players didn't agree to play Fudge; they did agree to play D&D.
And if we're honest, most of us *like* all those little rules: we
enjoy learning them, studying them, discussing them, applying them,
trying to get around them...
YMMV (and probably does).

3e does have modular add-ons (like most games), but the core is
tightly integrated. For example, what if you don't want to use
skills? That has profound implications for Rogues, and skills are
integrated throughout the system. Or what if you don't like a
particular skill or feat? Some you can throw out, but many are linked
to other parts of the system. And you're going to have to modify any
monsters or characters that use that feat. Don't like Attacks of
Opportunity? Getting rid of them is nontrivial. Want to change the
prices of equipment, or make magic less available? Doing so will
affect game balance. Don't like alignments, or want to throw out
Good/Evil and just use Law/Chaos? Alignments are far more integrated
in 3e than ever before.
Easy customization in 3e is pretty much limited to ADDING new skills,
feats, and prestige classes; inventing new classes is also possible
but nontrivial. Prestige classes and psionics are easy to exclude
because they aren't core.
By contrast, OD&D seems less integrated to me... or maybe a better
way to put it is the core is much smaller, and more of the system is
optional. I sometimes chuck the whole skill system, and once I
replaced it with Fudge mechanics. That would be difficult in 3e.
OD&D also lacks the knife-edge game balance of 3e, and is more
tolerant of changes and/or mistakes. For example, for years I've run
clerics like 3e sorcerers, choosing their spells on the fly. Doing
this is 3e would upset game balance.
I don't really see either game as better, just different. Both are
customizable, but in different ways.

I have both of these books and I think they are both
very good.
The artwork my not be great, but then again I don't
need full color fancy drawings. The monsters are
useful and nice to be able to throw a monster or two
at the group they never heard of.
The R&R books is really good. (ON a side note, a
group of people myslef included are working on a
project for SSS to put a update on the web for the
creation costs of all the magic items in that book.
Hopefully it will be up soon)
But I do agree you have to take each spell on it's own
and decide if it's too powerful, I even found some of
the spells to be under power and really pointless.
The ritual magic is nice and they do have a really
cool spell that is required to add a second class as a
cleric at later levels. This is really nice if you're
like me and don't like the new rules in 3E for just
being able to pick up a new class out of the blue.
The magic items are nice but again some are really
good, some are over powered, some are under powered.
My special section of working on was the rings so that
is the section I'm most familiar with.
The prestige classes. I really like the idea behind
them but I agree most of them are over powered. One
of my biggest complaints was they are too easy to pick
up. There should be more of a requiremnet then just
certain skill ranks or race. I don't use many
published prestige classes as i have created my own
for my game. I think the only one I have used that
has been published is the undead hunter from dragon
magazine. I really haven't gone over the ones in R&R
with a fine toothed comb yet.
Someone asked about the FR rulebook. Yes I am looking
forward to buying it. From what I have seen on it
from the web and the LCFR I think a lot of it will be
of great use in my game. The idea of region specific
feats are great, some of the prestige classes are ok
(but over powered just need to be toned down) What I
like is that many of the prestige classes are only 5
levels. I look forward to the dracolich stats (always
loved her since way back in Dragon 206 or what ever
issue), I look forward to new spells and magic items.
But over all the SSS books are well worth the cost,
even more so then some of the newer WoTC products.

Hi everyone,
This is the "Last Call" for submissions for the final Tome of Mystara.
If you need an extension, just ask me! Late submissions which don't have an
extension cannot be accepted.
I don't have a set release date for the final issue - just whenever we're
done editing and formatting. So if anyone has any ideas on "extras" we might
include (since it'd be pointless to have a poll!), just write me at this
address - not to the MML, please.
Thanks!

I like 2e, but this is one area where I really hated it. The 2e Psionicists handbook was just so awful. As you say, if you have to hit PC psionicists with other psionicists rather than powerful priests or wizards because the latter cannot harm them, then the tactics will work, of course, but it also shows that the rules are flawed at the core...
I remember considering psionics back then, so I looked at the book and read a few pages... and was horrified! I looked a bit more, and then gave up! I just put the book back on the shelf and shook my head as I said, "Oh well...". That was pretty much 2e psionics for me. I mean, if the player wanted to, his psionicist could Disintegrate stuff at 3rd level for crying out loud...

I believe they were talking about B10: Night's Dark Terror. After all, it's only one of the best adventures ever written for Mystara/OD&D or any other role-playing game IMHO. Needless to say, I don't have a copy myself, either :(

Those darn people at White Wolf have ruined me on this score, though. The
DC for a task is whatever I want it to be now. If I want it to be hard, I
give it a high number, if not I give it a low number. Other than very
specific tasks that have the DC listed in the PHB (and thus in front of my
players' faces), I go for whatever works for the story.

It is? How so? It looks about the same as AD&D and OD&D to me. Now, the
alignments are explained better than they have been in the past, but one

Now that more people have experience with 3e, what do you think about the
combat rules? Is there a reasonable way to simplify them to an easy non-map
system, and still maintain game balance. A friend of mine said that taking
away some of the rules to simplify it would either make fighter types way
better than other classes, or way worse, depening on how you handled things.

I totally agree! That is why I prefer 1st Edition to all the other rule
sets. It has the most toys and stupid rules, but it's simple enough to have
flexible fun with for the same reasons you like OD&D. But I agree, OD&D
works better for Mystara.

It won't be rereleased as such. Of course I shouldn't say "never", but I virtually guarantee it.
However, since WOTC has promised that all the old pre-3e stuff will be made available online, it should appear for us to download at some point.
The good news about that is that since OD&D/Mystara stuff is probably considered so dead that none will use it by WOTC, that stuff will all be absolutely free. That's what I'm hoping for, obviously, but I actually think that will also be the case.
The bad news, however, is that since WOTC is so certain that nobody will use all that old stuff (spread out over 2+ different rule-systems), they're not in any hurry in making it available, and IIRC, Mystara-stuff (OD&D and otherwise) is at the very bottom of their list of priorities in this matter :(
Yes, it's a real shame for us, but at least the stuff will then probably be free. Personally, I can't wait to download B10! It really is something special in my book!

Yes, he said that, but he also said:

Good question.
IIRC, the history of the empire has the Milenians first establishing their
nation in the forested hills west of the Hills of Desolation (see the PWA2
map for more information), and then subsequently conquering the Meghala
Kimata Plains and its inhabitants at the time. That said, I would assume
the capital city (now in ruins, likely) would be located in those forested
hills - somewhere.
Since Corisa (IIRC) was transported from the surface world, there should
also be legends in northern Davania of "the vanished city" - one day, the
now-forgotten city was there, a bustling centre of trade and moderate
prosperity in a declining empire, and then, POOF!, it was gone, leaving a
series of roads that end abruptly in a large, empty, open field, with no
evidence remaining that there was ever a city present. This could be a
way to get players interested in rumours of a hollow world, or otherwise
lead them along for a while.

Speaking of vanished cities- what do you guys think happened to the
areas of Mystara that had to be removed (the polar regions) when the
Immortals had to recreate the new opening to the Hollow World after
the axis shifted? Do you think they just filled in the old hole with
the leftovers from the new one? If Blackmoor really is the new north
pole as I've read (I understand that's up for debate), then is it
gone for good?

Given his other rants, especially in "From the Sorcerers Scroll" in "The
Dragon" magazine (I'm sorry, the "the" is still there in my mind, two
decades after it's stopped being on the cover), I suspect he's basically
speaking out in favor of DMs having more power than the players, not the
power to override E.G.G. himself.
Man, I miss my musty old 1st edition books, taped spines and worn corners
and muddy cat foot prints on the pages and all the rest.

In my campaign, a PC is soon to try the graduation test on pages 90-92. I
plan to run the test as presented in the text, but I did have a couple of
questions about it. If anyone has run it before, hopefully I can get some help,
1) In addition to what the candidate is told before the test, I am thinking of
adding a couple of things, the first is that the candidate should be told that
anything he is carrying when he walks out of the test is his. It doesn't say
to tell him this, but it would seem a shame if the PC assumed that was not
true. Is this fair, or is it giving too much away? Also, should the candidate
be told that they will be rescued if they are about to die? Since one can
fail and take the test again, those retaking the test would know this, so
maybe every candidate should know this.
2) All the encounters seem pretty fair, except for the blackball. Unless
the candidate has some prior knowledge of just what a blackball is and
can do. Now if the wizards of Glantri can use a blackball in their graduation
test, than they know quite a bit about those things. Which means it is
possible that some class at the school, such as Advanced Planar Basics 201,
teaches a few things about a blackball.
But here is my dilemma, if the PC doesn't know what a blackball is, one
misstep, and he is gone forever. But if he knows too much, he can use the
blackball to start demolishing the dungeon where the test takes place.
Since much of the test involves the obstacles of the doors, this gets lost
if the blackball just burns a hole through all of them.
3) It isn't clear how to get into the rooms through the one-way doors.
The text says that leaving the room through the correct one-way door
means they have to push until they make a strength check. It also says
a knock spell will open a one-way door either way. I would assume that
if the candidate is in a corridor which has the correct one-way door
to go into a room, he should just be able to open it. But the text then says
that if he is trapped in a corridor, a one-way door will open automatically.
This implies that opening a one-way door requires some effort. A knock
spell seems too harsh, as the candidate will have to burn up too many
spells just to get inside the rooms. It can't mean that a one-way door opens
up the wrong way into a room, because the only way out(typically) is then
to return to the corridor you just left.
So my question is, how did anyone address this. To get in a room, is it
just a matter of making the strength check, or something more involved?

Seeing that the PC goes in with nothing, he would probably assume that he
could keep some of the stuff found inside. Why tell him (or her) first?
Most players would not simply leave useful treasures behind, anyways. I
don't think it would be a big deal to hint at this, if you think for some
reason the PC would not take the items (what is their Wisdom score?). Then
again, if the PC is that dense, maybe they shouldn't be graduating from the
GSoM!
Also, should the candidate

I definitely would NOT give this away! Think of it as going through boot
camp or a fraternity initiation. The graduated members have secrets that
are not given to those who are un-initiated. Those failing the test may
very well be prohibited from speaking of (or have no memory of) how they
were rescued. If they knew that they failed and were rescued, a condition
of re-taking the test could be not to speak of what went on during the
initial testing. It just seems like it would be closely guarded and kept
secret amongst those prestigious enough to graduate. And traditions die
hard...

Give him a heads up on the blackball. That's only fair. But if only an
Immortal can (maybe) command a blackball, what is this one doing here? Is
Rad controlling it? Or maybe it is just a potent illusion of a blackball.
If it touches him, he would "disintegrate" and could later wake up outside
the testing grounds. His teacher could tell him that they rescued him from
beyond )with a wish or some other last minute rescue). That would explain
how the thing came to be there. In any case, I would work under the
assumption that the blackball (whether real or illusory) is confined to that
room alone, by whatever magic is binding it. That solves the problem of
disintegrating right through the whole place.

Just a strength check seems OK. You want the PC to go into the rooms. But
the goal is to get out, not to search out every inch of the place. Maybe
they only open on their own or something? I don't think it matters too
much, as long as the 1-way thing is maintained (with the exception of a
knock).
Hope some of this helps.

Uhmmmm... I want it.
First of all: death... uh... *Hail* to Alpathia!
(YES?) ;-)
Dear friend Stalker and guys,
how can I get a full list of OD&D + Mystara* products? Now I have the
money
to buy some material monthly (at least!).
About WHERE to get them, I have already asked and you guys - and Jenny
;-) -
replied e-bay and auctions... and in this list. Anywhere else?
* Of course, anything else you guys find interesting would be nice.
TIA,

On this subject, it seems like the list traffic has dropped to a mere
trickle. A year or two ago this was a busy place! What happened? Are
people losing interest? Moving on to 3e in different settings?
3e seems to be where the action is these days. It reminds me in some
ways of AD&D/OD&D in the 80s, when there was tons of fan material
being cranked out and creativity was soaring.
For some reason is seems like the degree of 3e activity is inversely
proportional to activity on this list. Has Mystara gotten left
behind? Are we (as a group) still playing in Mystara, or do we just
talk about it fondly while we play in other campaigns?
Curiously,
Mike

Mystara and OD&D are all that I play, have played and will play. I'm a die
hard. I don't crank out material for the MML because I'm already overloaded
cranking out stuff for my own campaigns. Hopefully, someday, I'll be able
to get some more of it so that it would be consumable by the rest of the
list. I have 3 games scheduled for next week (but that's highly unusual,
even weekly is rare). As for 3E, I could care less. I mean, I'm glad that
others are into it, and that it keeps Mystara going and gets newer people
into gaming. I'd consider playing in a 3E game if one came my way, but I'm
not planning on buying any products, doing conversions, or any of that. The
old stuff works fine for me. So yes, my Mystara is alive and well with
OD&D.

I must concur with this wholeheartedly.
I only play OD&D Mystara, and have no urge to play
anything else.
I'd do more in the way of writing but I'm s busy with
school at the moment that I don't have time to play
yet alone anything else.
I play when I can though.
Chris.

I hardly ever post to the list, but I play in one and dm another - so that's two weekly games
regularly. One Mystara and one OD&D. Don't play 3E, not planning on buying the stuff. Already have
too much invested in the systems now, to go out and start all over again. GRIN. I usually borrow
ideas, npcs, etc. from the list.

I'm DMing a Mystaran campaign. I do use stuff created by the listmembers
quite often. For example, I've just finished running Jenni's "Jet Black"
adventure, and my PCs are now dealing with the Bleak League from
Christian Constantin's Hule Gaz.

You must remember that this list mostly comes to life when people start =

I, too, still play OD&D Mystara. I've been elsewhere at times, but I =
always go back to Mystara eventually, and I've been gaming there =
exclusively for the past few years. And I'm not touching 3E, unless it's =

Personally I'm having troubles just remaining on the list. I have too
many activities and this is
causing problems to my university results. More than once I have thought
to unsuscribe, but
in the end I always come over to write something for the list, generally
re-working on past
material that I had written when I was less busy. Now, however, the
shelves are empty, so you
will probably not see much of me around, apart from the occasional comment.

I have the same OD&D/AD&D mixed campaign going since 1996.

No, I don't think these things should be explicitly told. The student would
be aware of some candidates failing, and some never being seen again.
Rumors would abound about failed candidates...but the professors would only
say "He failed the test". They would not say, "He died" or "He returned
home in shame". I expect the professors would be very closed mouthed about
the test...after all, it is partly a show of their own competence and
exclusivity.
I don't believe you should tell them about the magic items either.
Typically they'll be holding most of the stuff anyway...and its always nice
to have a player kicking himself about that ultra powerful item he DIDN'T
get.

It is possible that the whole thing is an illusion. The player can be
rescued just before he touches the ball, or just after...or he could die
forever. That much depends on the overall feel you want for Glantri and
goes back to the original question. Students could die in the tests...and
the professors would still only say, "He failed". Or they could go home in
shame and the announcement would be the same. Either way, the RUMOR of
students dying would surely abound. It just depends on whether you want it
to be a reality or not.
In general, if the characters are able to get good stuff out of an
encounter, I allow them to die.

I found the text confusing as well. In the end, a one way door can only be
opened the wrong way with a strength check. You should only allow one roll,
win or lose. To be fair though, if the character ends up unable to continue
due to the doors, then a door might open.

Between work, family and volunteering I've only found time to play.I don't
seem to have the time to spend on a campaign(at least not the time that
running a "good" campaign takes). So know that a t least one lister envies

I hear you, man!
> I have the same OD&D/AD&D mixed campaign going since 1996.
Good job, man. Keep it going, it is well worth it to have a consistant long
running campaign. You can always branch off from it (like the spinoffs in
Star Trek, for example).
My current Campaign started in 1984 and there are still 3 PCs who have
continued on. Twenty-four game years have passed and they've been through
95% of the B, X, CM, and M modules, plus lots of my own stuff. The "big 3"
are all L36 (F, C, & MU). So far, none has achieved Immortality, but they
are all powerful dominion rulers in Norwold.
Some followers of theirs adventured off on their own and have been in the HW
(during WotI, and trying to find their way home, since 1994 - only 1 of the
PCs who came in through the Pit are still present, the rest are HW natives).
My other branch campaign is the NextGen, which is the children of the
original characters (we never thought that it would get to this point when
we 1st started playing!). They started in 1994, too, and are now around L7.
What's cool, is the PCs all have a very detailed character history that was
actually played through by the original characters. There are secrets and
events left unresolved from the original (hi-level) PCs that work
incredibily well as adventure hooks for the NextGen.
Needless to say, this keeps me pretty busy (3 distinct campaigns all in
one).
I'm kind of curious - has anyone else on the list been running a campaign
for this long? If so, it would be fun to compare notes, and whatnot.
Happy gaming. I'm off to celebrate St. Patty's Day!
Dan

If you have a creditcard (VISA or some such), then I would recommend places like .
I've done business with myself and have had good experience with that - managed to grab WOTI and several gazetteers there at extremely reasonable prices. Check it out, since some it might still be there! Choose D&D, then AD&D and then the 'Dungeons and Dragons' option under the AD&D listing (yes, it's confusing, but that's where the old stuff is!)

I don't play OD&D, but I do play Mystara. I'm the DM of a large Mystara campaign currenlty playing though WOTI using 2e Player Option (modified by my own house rules, yes, but it's definitely still 2e Player Option rules).
In fact, the campaign has grown in the last few months, and there are now eight players, which forced me to cut the group into two! The two groups know of each other, and the idea is that PCs may shift from one group to the other freely from time to time (though it hasn't happened yet). In fact, I've just come home after having finished playing with one of them today!
So, yes, we still play Mystara. I have some Ravenloft and Birthright stuff lying around, so I could play that if I wanted to, but I guess I'm just stuck on Mystara, despite any 'kind' Thyatian 'assistance' to help me 'leave' ;)
Though we play WOTI, I've added stuff to it. Things like my Sword of Wayland article (in Tome #4) and my Calamity Star prophecies froms the basis of some stuff I've made for my campaign to liven things up a bit, and then posted for other people to use as well...

I think Jim Butler said they might get around to Mystara/OD&D stuff at the
very end of 2001, but it's by no means certain. I hope so though. Note,
though, that 're-release' means making available for download on the net in
this case - there will be no actual reprints of old stuff! They won't let
us reproduce it I'm sure, since people have already been hired to do so.
Meanwhile, we'll just have to sit here and wait, hard though it may be (and
it is!)
I don't know if Jim Butler is still on the list, but if you are, Jim, could
you confirm or deny this speculation?

Mystara forgotten? NEVER!
As for the 3E, I don't know, I've looked into it a little and I like some of
the things I see and dislike other stuff, I'm still undecided and tryitng to
learn it from what I can get on the net (from Eric Noah's site you can get
most of the text of the PHB, If I can just figure how many skill points and
feats a character gets I might try running a test game in 3E.). I DM only
in Mystara (although I might be persuaded to do a Dragon Mountain or Kara
Tur or BR game) and I play mostly in Mystara. I personally use 2E (pre S&P
and pre PO or what ever that version 2 of 2E was called, with an occasional
OD&D rule thrown in), but it seems most of the list uses strict OD&D,
although we're (meaning us 2E'ers) a close second I think (I think there is
one or two out there who love AD&D 1E, each to their own I guess, as long as
Mystara lives). I'm also testing out the Birthright rules in Mystara, and
there's a couple of individuals using other systems in Mystara (HERO,
Glaive, and Spelljammer are a few that pop to mind).
As for lack of activity on the list, I think it has five factors (there
might be others)
1) I think a lot of people might of moved to this MNS thing. Unfortunately
I don't have a program that will do Newsgroups, :(
2) Some of us are still too busy poring over the new almanac to do other
stuff
3) Some people probaly are currently all consumed with 3E like you said
4) And a while back wasn't there some flame war on the MML that ended up
insulting a lot of people who abandoned the list? (I just scroll on through
any thing that goes on too long so I dont even read the flame wars, and so I
don't really know what happened).
and the main reason (at least for myself and I think with many others too)
is
5) Real life is getting in the way.... I've just been so busy lately I've
even had to pause ALL my PBEM games (I play solely PBEM now because I moved
and don't know of any players in the area... anyone in Hanford California
area?)
everyone else, did I miss any factors?

Congradulations. It's been ten years since I GMed a D&D campaign in the
Known World and five since I GMed or played at all. However I just started
playing in a fantasy campaign and I can't believe I gave it up. I know your
elation at GMing again. I'm looking forward to a day this summer when I can
get my act, and game together again. Best of luck. May your muse bless your

Hero? Who's using Hero? Much as I love D&D, Fantasy Hero is the only
game I think does heroic fantasy better. I'm looking forward to
seeing 5th edition when it comes out this year (hopefully).

In my opinion the books from Sword and Sorcery Studios are quite
interesting but not particularly compatible with Mystara. In particular,
"Relics and Rituals" has rules for making arcane spell failure checks
even worse (basically to the point that an arcane spellcaster had best
be nearly naked when casting arcane spells), but for the Mystara3E
project we were looking in the exact opposite direction for ways to
deal with armored spellcasting Elves.

They were mentioned only in the Savage Coast products, where they
seem to substitute for unusual manifestations of the Red Curse. At
this point I would keep them on the "back burner" for dealing with
the powers of Immortals and fairies and/or stranger Red Curse
manifestations but not play them up as an obviously distinct type of
mystical power for PCs to exploit -- in the Mystara setting, psionics
should seem to be just another form of magic unless there is a vast
power scale difference (for example, Immortal vs. mortal).

The old question for balance...
As most of the others who have answered your question, I think that up
to 4th lvl should be "normal", i.e. war verterns, local magi of
villages, guard captains, etc.
Everthing above should be considered as "hero", for good or evil. The
"name"-level represents an aquired status as hero, the PC/NPC is part of
the tales told in the taverns. "His name is known".
But the levels above 12th (my opinion) the PCs/NPCs are recognized as
mighty persons in the region/land they are (A cleric is able to raise
the dead!). Of course a 15th lvl karameikan fighter neednt to be known
in Glantri, but a 23th lvl certainly would be, for his tales should have
left the land through various bards.
So I set NPCs in a campaign as desired:
If the PCs are quite mighty (as they are now), normal men (-4th lvl)
arent a threat anymore. Quantity might bring in a hint of danger, but
if theres any mage in the group...
If I would run a NPC pirate ship, it would be a rookie ship for
low-level PCs (up to 3rd lvl) but the ship of a reknown pirate for high
level PCs (pirates at 4th lvl, lieutenants at 8th+ and the "king of
pirates" at any lvl desired (slightly higher than that of the highest
level PC). Have a look at the Shires GAZ, where a known pirate is
Mulgor Loberlinn, 32th lvl hin master (retired).... more than a
challenge to every PC... an other names are mentioned (Black Adder
Swiftbrand, Jenkin Firebeard, etc).
If the pirate ships only an "encounter", it should provide fun.
Possibly a challenge, but not more.
If the pirate ship is the enemy in search of the same artifact your PCs
are searching, they should be equal, but not more. A really frightening
enemy should then be the guardian of the item... That would privide two
hard fights. Enough for a two-day-adventure.

Sad as it is, you told EXACTLY what is happening to me, for example: I'm
playig Dlance Saga, adapted to the 3e.
But, hey, I'm buying Mystara stuff right now! MY CAMPAIGN will keep on
being Mystara. It rules!
You said "3e activity": where do u see it? Are there lists? Usenet?
Are there lists - like this - of other worlds? (not as good as Mystara,
obviously...).
Look, people, 3e and Mystara are *not* mutually exclusive, for one is a
set of rules, the other, a setting. Am I wrong? (what is 3e default
campaign world, BTW?)
what about he loooong thread "3e Mystara"? Is it being translated? Shall
this stop Mike's fear? I mean, 3e and Mystara together, what supposedely
would bring attencion back to OUR Wordl?
Worried, (!!!)

Yes, I agree.
I've got the 3 core rules books and the screen. The DMG contaisn useful
info for ANY system: how to entertain players, how to design encounters
and places - inluding TOWNS, had task - etc. Much like the "Creative
Campaigning". So, againg, 3e is not "Bye, OD&D", but a "Get even better,
beloved OD&D!".
Will keep on reading 3e and taking notes of what is cool. Then, add it
to Mystara - which rocks - and keep on going with my
"Who-is-this-Bargle-is-it-connected-to-the-Iron-Ring-why-is-that-elf's-ears-sooooo-long-and
what-is-that-tatoo???" campaign.
We are not leaving!!! Want an example? My 3e, Dlance party talked more
than an hour about Hollow World, physics, the poles holes (!!!), elves
connection tunnels... they loved it. I tell you, there are more people
going INTO Mystara than out! :-)

I doubt it. There are more or less the same people on the MNS as on the
MML, and only a few are not on the MML (for lack of spare time, mostly).

Netscape Mail can read newsgroup, and works on most systems. You could
probably find something better for your specific OS, too.

Yes, yes, this is a very important thing to be said.
This list, Thibault's and Shawn's site... hey are just excellent and
give material to many of us. I use NPCs, places, events... all from
them. So, there is no doubt all this stuff is important and the list is
alive. The way we design things together, and make it better and
better... there is no other way to make our gaming more exciting.
I recently used the North Karameikos Guide - wroten by a merchant...
rerere - to add flavour to my players. Used Exocet - Diablo - font to
the headers, script for the text... it looked great! All thanks to the
list.

I'm buying MoA and WotI, for instance.
Would it b e the same get the PDF files?
I have same PFDs from WotC, that one from the FORBIDDEN - because of a
"rape" - adventure etc. Just because thre was no way I could get it on
paper.
Smelling the maps, kissing the box... is it the same? (Yes, I'm a

Apart from this: does the digital material bring EVERYTHING the original
one did?

PS: Your campaign, the Players Option (with the CD), breaking the party

PO was a nice thing, was a "GURPS-Vampire..." flavour to D&D: points,
changing default races and classes... cool.

Yes, real life.
How do u guys deal with the "Choose: RPG or me!!!" factor? :-(((

How to make a IDEAL game for a newbie? The 1st impression is the lasting

CD boxes? The phrase "Tonight is a verrrrrry speciallll night: tonight

There are tons of new campaigns, and most of the old lists have been
rejuvenated with fresh activity. Even Dragon magazine finally has
some decent content with usable new material.

I didn't mean to suggest exclusion. Personally I think 3e is probably
the best version of D&D yet published, and the closest to 1e in
flavor (which is good -- I like the Sword & Sorcery feel). That's
not to say people should switch if they're happy with what they're
using: tastes vary.
I just thought that maybe those that were switching were also
drifting to other settings.

Check out and find dnd-
l. You can look through the archives of the various dnd-related lists
hosted by wizards or join them from here I think, including this one! dnd-l
is a huge list, though! I used to subscribe myself and we were about 1,200
people across the world (I left about half a year ago because I didn't like
the prospect of 3e...)

Not sure, but IIRC there is a 'links' section on Eric Noah's site, which
should give you lots of places to look.

It's no good for 3e since the first 250 issues were before it's time. If
you want good roleplaying background, particularly on Mystara, there is no
way you can survive without it though! :)
Though I have more than a hundred of the old issues, I bought this
myself recently, and I haven't regretted it - 5 cd-roms packed with stuff!
For Mystara fans, the 'Voyage of the Princess Ark' series by Bruce Heard
might be the most interesting, but there are certainly other intersting
Mystara-related articles and bits in there! It's an expensive investment (I
bought it because the store gave a 25% discount on it), but it's still
money well spent!

Here is the link to the "hub":

Don't be worried Vini, and stop your fears Mike, the Mystara 3E Project
team is alive and well, if a bit slow off the starting block.
Things seem to have taken a definite turn for the better in recent
months, and some real decisions are finally getting made regarding certain
conversion details. Keep an eye out, there's a chance some "official
conversion material" will be available on the web in the not-too-distant
future.

One more problem: my PCs assumed they had to get out in as little moves as possible: that was a very elegant way to get out, very Wizard-like: but it's absolutely not rewarding if you look at the score table. I guess the scores should definitely be reviewed, by giving MUCH more value to a shorter number of moves/visited rooms: a good Mage doesn't behave like a Barbarian, right?

I am currently playing OD&D Mystara with a group of 4 people (including me) on a weekly basis (ab.3-4 hours session). We are considering starting a 3E campaign, but we prefer to fully use our OD&D material first: it will take at least one full year, since we are campaigning in DotE and still have to play through CoM and WotI (only done WotI part 1). So... we're not in a hurry for 3E.

Hey everyone,
I hope you that you have read most, if not all, of the Mystaran Almanac AC
1017, and enjoyed it.
Like every year we are recruiting new contributors for the next almanac, so our
elders have new blood to replace those they have bled dry previously...
So, what kind of people are we in need for? Well, that's fairly easy: people
who like Mystara, obviously, who are particularly interested in a few nations
they would be most eager to write for, who have enough free time to contribute
the team effort, and in a perfect world who are deeply knowldegdeable about
Mystaran canon and non-canon especially, naturally, the PWAs and MAs.
So, do you match all criteria? Well, why aren't you part of the team already,
we desperately need you!
Or maybe you match only part of these criteria, and are afraid to join because
you fear you won't know enough about the setting or the MA-timeline to be of
any use? Well don't worry - you enthusiasm will most certainly more than make
up for it.
If you have artistic talent, then we also need your skill to help in
illustrating the almanac.
If you are interested, please contact me (hmusseau@yahoo.com) or Geoff (GANDERG@tc.gc.ca).

Well, in that case, does anybody know of any good newsgroup newsreaders for
Windows 98 using IE 5 (and a web based email account, if that matters)?
or is there a way to use netscape mail without having to have netscape

Yeah, I think feats might be nice (might being the key word, I still can't
figure out all the details, like how many do characters get, when do they
get new one's, how often can they use them, what's this about regional feat
choices, etc, etc).

Liek I said, I didn't follow it too closely. I think Beau was one one of
the ones that left and came back, other than that I'm not sure.

Hello,
i will gladly contribute to the 1018 almanac, and i was yet planning to =
write to you and Geoff. I would like to write something about the north =
western corner of Davania, particulary Pelatan, Izonda and Mis. I've =
written articles about those nations and Shawn has published them on his =

I'll post this reply to you, Geoff and the list

Speaking of stuff on sale...
Has anyone ever been able to find this? I think it was
a "Challenger" module and I have only seen it once on
Ebay.
Anyone have any details on it?
Thanks,

Well, that module has nothing to do with Mystara proper. It takes place in
the Thunder Rift setting devised to support the D&D Game box (11th edition,
an introductory version of the RC with details for character levels 1-5).
The adventure is short, and quite bad IMO: just a small dungeon crawl with
not too much of a climax or plot. It takes place in a ruined and half-sunken
keep. It has a lot of counters and the map takes the shape of a big
floorplan to move your counters or miniatures around... it reveals the whole
of the dungeon layout to the players, so it's a pain and not too much
role-playing, unless you scissor the map or use covering sheets. Oh, if you
buy a used version anyway, make sure it has the poster map, otherwise you
won't have a way of running the adventure!!

Hello felow Mystarans.
I am in GREAT need of coming up with a realistic system that could model the yearly weather temperatures/patterns of the Known World region of Mystara. I was wondering if anyone would know of a site/a program that has this information. Or if the info was in a paper-format ,if they were willing to perhaps email me some of the die rolls/techniques that go into the determination of the annual weather patterns for one or two nations such as Glantri or Karameikos ( I do realize that typing the weather systems for more than 15 countries in the Known World would be too much) I would be so ever grateful. Hopefully I can use those examples then as a springboard for me to come up with realistic systems for the other nations of the Known World. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone can help me with this.
>From what I hear some sort of weather system is written on the margins of the Trail Maps but I do not own them (as much as I would love to!) and they are EXCESSIVELY difficult to obtain on ebay. If someone would not mind to share some of the weather info off of that for say ,Glantri, that would help me A LOT. Thanks.

I started something like this a while back, but never really
finished. This doesn't really follow canon, but the basic premise I
was going on was that the Known World is sort of similar to the
eastern United States, with modifications. For example:
Tothmeer ~ Baton Rouge, LA
Specularum ~ Mobile, AL
Thyatis City ~ Talahassee, FL
Soderfjord ~ New York, NY
Darokin City ~ Oklahoma City, OK
Ethengar ~ Pierre, SD
Broken Lands ~ Rapid City, SD
Sind, SE coast ~ Galveston, TX
Sind, Great Salt Swamp ~ San Antonio, TX
Great Waste ~ Las Vegas, NV
Adri Varma Plateau ~ Boise, ID
For some places that don't fit the pattern due to mountains or magic,
I'd choose something that seemed appropriate:
Ylaruam ~ Yuma, AZ
Glantri ~ Minneapolis, MN
Thyatis City ~ Macon, GA
Alfheim Town ~ Little Rock, AR
Minrothad ~ Talahassee, FL
Ierendi ~ Key West, FL
Selenica ~ Nashville, TN
Atruaghin Plateau ~ Cheyenne, WY
Rockhome - Knoxville, TN
Anyway, once you've established a general correspondence with real
world places, you can simply use RW climate data. Here is a good
source:
http://www.met.utah.edu/jhorel/html/wx/climate/normrain.html
http://www.met.utah.edu/jhorel/html/wx/climate/normtemp.html
You can also figure broad patterns apply as well. For example, there
might a "tornado alley" in Darokin. Hurricanes would probably blow in
off the Sea of Dread in the summer and hit Thyatis... but Ylaruam is
probably sheltered by the Isle of Dawn. Karameikos would have a
summer rainy season but a slightly drier winter.
Mike

I used some idea similar to Michael's, only that instead of using US
equivalences according to KW geography I made a list of world matches which
followed the weather descriptions featured in the GAZ and PWA, then I could
check weather through the world via internet. EG, I used Switzerland and
Austria for Glantri, Germany's Black Forest area for Alfheim,
Syria-Palestine-Lebanon-Jordan-Israel for Ylaruam, France for Darokin, Spain
for mainland Thyatis and so on so on...
that's a bit rough, but normally PCs don't travel like planes, so they
cannot see cross-continent congruent patterns.
That was when I got on the www, before that I just used the weather we had
in real life when gaming... sunny if it was sunny, storm if storm outside
our gaming den (once it was a sandstorm in the desert!!). Unless the story
asked for specific weather, it was kinda cool having pouring rain in the
game when you could hear it outside.

Don't the two Trail Maps have weather info on them? I remember at
least one of them having something about weather in the Known World
at any rate.

I have found Outlook Express (which apparently comes free with
Windows 98) to be quite adequate for the purpose of accessing
Usenet newsgroups. The locations you will want to point it at are
news.dnd.starflung.com and rpg.hmimages.com. The first of these
two will have nothing but a very active group discussing D&D/Mystara,
while the second will have a large number of groups that are not yet
very active, one of which is dedicated to Mystara.

Here's a table from GAZ 11 (Darokin):
Roll d% (-15 dry season, +15 wet season)
01-30 Clear
31-40 Partly cloudy
41-45 Overcast
46-50 Unseasonably Hot
56-60 Windy
61-65 Volatile (make 3 additional checks for that day)
66-70 Storm
71-73 Thunderstorms
74 Severe T-Storm
75 Tornado
76-85 Drizzle
86-95 Light Rain
96+ Heavy rain
Effects of these on movement, etc. are detailed in the GAZ.
>From PWA2+3:
Avg. Temp. for Darokin City (F):
Winter: 35-50
Spring: 45-65
Summer: 75-85
Autumn: 40-60 (Rainy season)
PWA3 has some good weather forecasts for different regions (pp.121-127)
Minrothad GAZ also has a weather system.
Hopefully, you have at least one of these products!
Let me know if you need any more details.

World. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone can help me with this.

WotI is divided in 2 books: one is Immortal Rules (revised), the oder is a huge adventure module ("Wrath of the Immortals" - from which the acronym WotI). The adventure is divided in Part I, Part II and Finale (Part III).
Hope this helps,
Federico

So... we're not in a hurry for 3E.

Checking the weather
Roll 1d%, and an extra d10.
Temperature
On the main weather chart is given hi-lo temperatures for a given =
season. Hi is for the beginning of the afternoon, lo just before dawn. =
For flexibility add the extra d10 to summer/spring temp., subtract it =
from fall/winter temp. Temp. is in degrees Fahrenheit.
Precipitation
On the main weather chart P indicates the chance of precipitation. Temp. =
governs whether it's rain, melting snow or snow. Add the two percentile =
dice for duration in hours. The second digit indicates intensity (see =
chart). The extra d10 indicates wind strength (see chart). A roll of 00 =
indicates hurricane, tornado, damaging hail, or extreme temp. for the =
region.

7-9 Heavy Rain, or Snow 1" per hour* =

10+ Thunderstorm, or Snowstorm 2" per hour* =

* Double in hills, Triple in mountains
Timing precipitation
Multiply the result on the extra d10 by 2. This indicates at what time =
precipitation starts. It will carry over to the next day. Second day's =
precipitation should be calculated from the end of first day's =
precipitation instead of the default hour (12am). If this moves second =
day's precipitation into third day, precipitation for day 2 is =
cancelled, the sky remains overcast.
Fog
On the main weather chart D indicates the chance of fog at dawn or dusk =
only; N indicates fog during night hours as well. Switch percentiles of =
the d% roll to check for fog. Multiply the numbers of the d% to find the =
distance (in feet) to which vision is limited. Fog lasts 1d4 hours. =
Precipitation immediately ends fog.
Winds
If fog exists, winds are absent during those hours. High winds indicate =
violent weather. Reduce temperature by 1d6+9 degrees when high winds are =
blowing. Wind strength is +1 when 24 miles or more away from any coast. =
Roll again for winds each time precipitation or fog status changes. =
Check the dominant wind currents, then roll on the wind variations chart =

Well, I've been dividing time between my campaign (running every second
week, for the most part, since 1995 - massive party turnover last year,
though), participating in the MML since the same time, and more recently
the Almanac. I don't think Mystara has been forgotten by its fans, at any
rate - regardless of what system they play. True, I use slightly
modified OD&D - always have and probably always will - but a fair amount
of the material I post to the List for public consumption is relatively
stat-free, IMO. The other major thing I'm working on is tidying up all
the mini-adventures I wrote for my campaign, eventually to share them with
the lot of you (if you want).
As for lack of activity on the MML, that's a cyclical thing. In Canada
(at least) this time of the year is university crunch time - final papers
and exams are coming up fast, and I would imagine it's the similar case in
the US and Europe.

Subject: Poll: Most and Least used Gaz
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Hi everyone!
I was revising my Mystara files and I stumbled upon an old poll I had begun a year ago, involving our judgement on the Mystara gazetteers. Since I got many votes and I think the poll might still be interesting, I am posting it here again, along with the first results.
There are three questions u should answer:
1. What are the three Gazetteers you used most?
2. What are the three Gazetteers you used least?
3. What are the three Gazetteers you consider most disappointing?
The answers get points in order to evaluate the answers in this way: (this is an example based on my answers)
Most Used:
a. Darokin (3 points)
b. Glantri & Ierendi (2 points each)
c. DotE & Alfheim (1 point each)
Least Used:
a. Minrothad
b. Five Shires
c. Shadow Elves
(I never had the chance to use these three, really.., altho I liked GAZ9 and GAZ13)
Most Disappointing:
a. Nithia (a mishmash between D&D and AD&D, missing tables and poor focus on Nithian history)
b. Ylaruam (a nice gaz, but could have been 10 times better)
c. Ierendi & DotE (note: altho I play in and use both gaz, I reckon they could have been written better)
After 15 votes, the current results are:
Most used:
1. Glantri (33 points, always listed first)
2. Darokin (27 points, altho it got more preferences than Glantri)
3. Karameikos (20 points)
4. Dawn of the Emperors (15 points)
5. Shadow Elves (7 points - note the great gap from the first 4 entries!)
6. Orcs of Thar (6 points)
7. Alfheim (4 points)
8. Ierendi & Ethengar (3 points each - surprisingly enough!)
Least used (note that least used doens't mean least liked):
1. Atruaghin (21 points - seems nobody campaigns here)
2. Northern Reaches & Ierendi (11 points - main reason is they are too weird)
3. Ethengar (10 points - seems it's too distant as a culture, like Atruaghin)
4. Five Shires (9 points - no surprise here..)
5. Minrothad (8 points)
6. Ylaruam (6 points)
7. HW Gazetteers (5 points - easy to understand why..)
8. Shadow Elves (4 points)
Least favourite (note that this category was introduced only during the last days of the poll, so it got less votes):
1. Ierendi (6 points)
2. Nithia & Shadow Elves (4 points)
3. Ylaruam & Glantri (3 points - this is strange enough, uh?)
4. Darokin, Atruaghin & Karameikos (2 points)
PS: when u reply to the list, please be sure not to overquote this mail and deleting all the parts not related to your comments (like my preferences and the final three lists). U may and in fact are welcome to motivate or comment your answers! ;)
Enjoy the poll :)

If getting a spate of posts is needed why not invite Evil Genius and the
Alphatiaphiles to reprise the "Great Debate" =) I for one, enjoyed
every minute of that flurry of activity, even when it got testy, because I
was new to Mystara at that time, I was soaking up everything I could.
