Actually, I responded in much the same way when I got the assorted Thunder Rift materials many years ago. I wasn't quite sure what to do with them and I didn't really like the whole dimensional shift idea that was used in one of them to spirit the PCs to a new level of adventure on Mystara. I took a close look at the scale of the map of Thunder Rift and realized that you can pretty much fit the whole of the valley in one 24 mile map hex (give or take a half hex). I was trying to choose a good spot to place the valley in the Known World when more important tasks took my attention away from it. Uh, all info produced by us MMLers goes to the Vaults of Pandius (the official fan site for Mystara, http://www.dnd.starflung.com/). Exactly! One can even reduce the scale and fit it into a smaller area. Also, if you have this product, don't be afraid to use what you do like and drop everything you don't (of course the map can't change, but still...). I suppose you mean "Rage of the Rakasta", "The Knight of Newts", and that kind of modules. I have only skimmed through those two, and they don't look especially good, they seem to be just small dungeons. IIRC, these modules are supposed to be played without a DM --which means that most of the space if taken by irrelevant (from a DM's POV) comments on what will happen if the characters attempt various actions. In the end, nothing comparable with the good old D&D modules of the B and X series, IMO. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 16:35:52 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Domains of Ostland - Fallersholm MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Finally I've managed to find some time to continue my pet project: = Detailing the domains of Ostland (and hopefully the rest of the Northern = Reaches in time). He has ordered his subjects to do likewise, = causing much trouble, but there are few who dare stand against this = renowned fighter. All of Ostland observes Fallersholm closely to see = what comes of these new ideas. When fighting, Karsefni wears a chain = mail+2, and wields a battle axe+2. Karlsefni is married to Siglinde the Rascal (36) and they have five = children: Ogmund Karlsefnison (21), Ingibjorg Siglindesdottir (19), = Grani Karlsefnison (17), Hlif Siglindesdottir (14), and Askr = Karlsefnison (11). She is known for her mischievous nature, she enjoys = playing pranks on everyone around her. Ingibjorg (Lawful F3; Modest/Proud 7/13, Courageous/Fearful 14/6, = Loyal/Unreliable 15/5) is at the Royal Household at the Court of Cnute, = where she is one of the shield-maidens. She enjoys proving her worth in = defense of king and country. Ogmund left = Fallersholm five years ago along with Hormstein, entering service on his = longship. When Hormstein was killed a year ago, the crew beat up Ogmund = when he claimed the ship as his, and threw him overboard. Ogmund has = spent this year tracking down the crew and killing them one by one. The lack of access to open water is it's major problem, and goods have to travel by ox-cart to neighbouring domains, a difficult feat in harsh weather. The great hall has an outdoor training area, used daily by the household warriors of the jarl. A temple of Thor lies next to the great hall. This temple was there before the village, which takes it's name from it (Church Dale). > > KARLSHAVN > A small fishing village that is slowly being expanded to a harbor town, Karlshavn (Karl's Harbor) lies on a small strip of land granted to Fallersholm by the domain of Zeamark. 440 people live and work here. This is a trait that he inherited from his parents, both of whom are dead now. His father died while raiding when Karlsefni was 14 years old, and his mother, who had been ruling the clan since then, died of Gnoll's Hepatitis, when he was 20. While Karlsefni mourned them both, he knew that they had lived their lives to the fullest, and that they wanted him to do the same thing. Karlsefni married Siglinde the Rascal two years later, and has ruled clan Fallersholm with her by his side since then. Most everything Karlsefni does is done impulsively, he is very governed by his emotions. Nearly a year ago he was invited to a private audience with Queen Yrsa the Young, where she told him of her vision of a more modern Ostland. It did not take the queen long to convince Karlsefni that changes were needed if Ostland was to survive. Karlsefni whole-heartedly agreed to free his thralls as an experiment to see whether his domain can successfully survive this transition. He has ordered his subjects to do likewise, causing much trouble, but there are few who dare stand against this renowned fighter. All of Ostland observes Fallersholm closely to see what comes of these new ideas. While Karlsefni enjoys all around him and believes that everybody should be getting the most out of life, Ogmund believes that the only one who should be enjoying himself should be Ogmund. When he was young, Ogmund was tutored by a cruel warrior, Hormstein the Flogger. It was from Hormstein that Ogmund learned of pride and ambition, emotions that have ruled him ever since. Ogmund left Fallersholm five years ago along with Hormstein, entering service on his longship. When Hormstein was killed a year ago, the crew beat up Ogmund when he claimed the ship as his, and threw him overboard. Ogmund has spent this year tracking down the crew and killing them one by one. He recently returned to Fallersholm, where he was appalled to discover that his father is freeing the thralls, and is now plotting to overthrow Karlsefni and assume command of the clan. At the moment he is hanging around seedy taverns in Zeaburg looking for followers to help his plans. Ogmund particularly hates his mother for playing embarrassing pranks on him, when he was young; he can't stand it when his macho image is ruined. He favors dark clothing, playing up his image of a "bad boy". Enjoy... Vizier ------ Role: the Viziers emulate Farid, Al Kalim's companion, wise and clever, pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness, ready to manage the shadiest businnesses while keeping their masters' reputation unblemished. Every government officer has his Vizier, though there is great difference between the Grand Vizier of the Caliph and the governors' secretaries or the Qadi's tribal advisor. A Vizier has no power of his own, but he has a great ability and potential for control the power wielded by his master. Requirements: a Vizier needs to have quick wits, in order to comply with his master requests and to find the legal loopholes which gives him invaluable advantage, and to be prudent, in order to protect his not only his master's reputation, but also his own position. In addition, a Vizier needs to stay on his master's good side, and to be able to perform diplomatic missions. Therefore, minimum scores of 12 Int, 13 Wis and 13 Cha are required for anyone to become a Vizier. Viziers are often Lawful, but many adhere only to the letter of the laws, therefore falling into the Evil side. Less scrupulous Viziers may be of other alignemnts, though non-Lawful, Good-aligned Viziers tend to last little in their positions. Viziers are most often Thieves or Bards. Priests of the Eternal Truth don't have the necessary pragmatism, and a Ylari Fighter's honour does not allow him to use morally ambiguos means to reach his goals --in the end, that is why Viziers exist. Wizard are sometimes Viziers, but they don't like to be distracted from their studies, and often prefer to work on their own, which makes them poor candidates for Vizier positions. Class Modifications: Viziers Thieves and Bards get the Bribe Officials skill instead of Climb Walls. In addition, Vizier Thieves prefer skills that allow them to acquire information, like Detect Noise or Read Languages. However, they are free to choose how to distribute their skill points. Weapon Proficiencies: Viziers can choose freely their weapons, within thier class limits. Many select the traditional Alasiyan weapons, kouglar (dagger) and scimitar. Non-Weapon Proficiencies: most Viziers use whatever means they can to persuade others to do their biddings. Bards use their special abilities, which are always turned to intimidation, blackmail or guile more than persuasion, while Thieves and Wizards get Intimidation and Etiquette as bonus proficiencies. All Viziers must be literate, so non-Bards must take Reading/Writing (Alasiyan). All Viziers get the Information Gathering proficiency for free, since acquiring information is vital for their job. Equipment: Viziers can use whatever equipment they can afford. In addition, they can use their master's fund, provided they have a very good reason to do so. Special Benefits: Viziers don't have special benefits other than their bonus proficiencies and their connections and funds. Special Hindrances: Viziers are feared and distrusted, and when they have to get something done, they must force people to work for them. When a Vizier has no means to coherce someone, he gets a -3 reaction penalty. In addition, Viziers must obey their masters, or risk being replaced. A replaced Vizier is usually definitively silenced by his successor, especially if the position he had was one of great power. Starting Wealth: a Vizier is usually well funded by his master or department, so he gets double standard funds for his class. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 18:18:07 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: The Stalker Subject: Re: Tangor and Nandi.... I am a new recruit to the list. I am a DM/GM from Finland and our group has been playing the same D&D campaign since, oh 1988 propably. Right now we are about to embark on the X10, Red arrow, Black shield -module. The pace won't be quick, as we live in different cities. If you are interested, I will mail updates and some reflections on the X10 as the story unfolds. Experiences about an adventure that is so different from the run-of-the-mill modules might benefit all of us. I have rewritten the adventure very much, starting from the battle rules for War Machine (some roles that reflect the world situation), and going on to the situations in various countries and the mythology behind the events. My campaing world seems to differ very much from the latter generation of official products (before the demise of the whole project). Excuse the long mail, but I wished to use this opportunity to get my own thoughts on paper and lay ground for the future mails. Main differences are: - WOTI has had no effect in my campaign, neither the Savage Coast campaign. I never even saw the products. So the comet never plummeted and hit Glantri/Darokin (?), and the countries beyond Hule are still in the process of being colonised. Actually the war will disrupt the colonisation plans fatally, as the Nomads have secretly overrun the outposts of the Minrothadians and the Ierendians during the winter (the adventure starts in spring). This they did 1) to keep the invasion plans secret - ships escaping the carnage didn't have trade winds to take them home, but in the spring they could have brought valuable intelligence reports 2) to find the ships that are to be used to transport troops to aid Blac Eagle in the Karameikan civil war - There is NO Hollow World. Period. - There are also no shadowelves. I have actually led two campaigns in the same historical continuum, the second 500 years ago. (Incidentally the First Nomad War took place then.) The "historical" campaigns describes a period which leads to "the Great Retreat", when shadowelves leave the world. The Norse Gods and the Court of Auberon leave also, and Barimoor is eliminated. (The second campaign started from "Blade of Vengeance", the one-on-one adventure, and it includes an incursion to Hule which will depose a demon cult and lay ground to the eventual rise of Hosadus and his holy war.) - The Great Khan doesn't exist. Instead the previous would-be great khan was "dethroned" (desaddled?) after his agents failed to incite civil war in Vestland. This was palyed out in X11, which led to the thronement of King Tenitar (Ruthinian national faith has replaced the fled Valhalla myhtos in Vestland.) Other developments in Ethengar: * The uighurs overrun western Heldann after a bloody civil war between Heldann loyalists and an ursurping lord supported by Gylgarid cult minotaurs. The Khan of the tribe committed suicide after Jaku's influence was (see below) removed. The uighurs couldn't enjoy the spoils of war for a long time, however: Sliktor orcs laid waste to their homelands. * Batu Khan overrun the Kiyats with the help of the Hooplak hobgoblins after the lord of Seaforth Keep (PC) destroyed Jaku the Render. * "Chanai" in X10 is a Murkit lord preparing himself for Great Khanhood. With the help of the Nomads he'll try to gather all the tribes and attack Glantri when some of its armies will be helping the Corunglain front against the Nomads.Batu Khan won't play ball, however, and he'll forge alliances with the Hooplak and Sliktor tribes, in a way reenacting the history of the Khanates. (The PC mentioned above was also rash enough to sign a cooperation treaty with him. Then again another PC, who is the lord of a dwarven colony in the Red Fangs (X11), has forged links with the Heldann league, and the future will show if this confuses the situation. (By the way, no Hedlannic knights either, only a loose confederation of homesteaders). - In Karameikos the veiled society was wiped out long ago, and recently the iron ring too. There is an uneven peace between Stephan and Black Eagle afted a skirmish, which destroyed Luln. The skirmish was the climax of a long chain of events in which an ancient Nithian Lich tried to take over the Karameikos. The lich had infiltrated the Iron Ring and was using it to get some main NPC:s possessed. The Korizegy Keep curse was his doing, too, as his plans had been hatching for centuries. (The uneven peace in Karameikos will be broken when Black Eagle joins the ranks of the Master - The Kin faction is in power in Ylaruam - Thar will not take part in the coming war. He hopes that the war will weaken the Rockhome enough to ensure him victory in the future invasion (I'll play out the Rockhome civil war after a few years). - I dropped the idea about the Immortals in the end of the 80's and moved on to more conventional gods, althought the lines are a bit blurred. Some Immortals are still there as gods, others I have replaced (for example Halav and the others are sill worshipped, but Thanatos's "sister" is pulling the strings). The war is a reflection of an attempt by Thanatos to gain the upper hand in these parts of the world. The Soul Gem was created 500 years ago during the first Nomad Wars. The Crystal Dagger (pretty much unexplained in the original module) was constructed at the same time by a god called Crystallak, who is worshipped now in the Thyatian Pantheon. THE "NOW" of the campaign is the spring of 1011. Recent important events include: - The PC:s defeated wizard from Isle of Danw who had allied with the cult of Rathanos and taken over the Thanegioth Archipelago. He was trying to incite war between Thyatia and Alphatia in order to get revenge. His people had suffered in the border clashes of the two empires long enough. After this Thyatis annexed the islands, but they were forced to retreat after Alphatian spies with some indirect help of a PC created a slave revolt. - Thyatis was repelled from the Hinterlands, again with the help of one PC. A whole colonial legion was wiped out, plus most of the support fleet in Thanegioth. - Alhatia has trouble in its Northern colonies, as the whaling nations have declared independence. (Thus Alphatia and Thyatia won't be very active during the War. Thyatia might try to grab Ylaruam though, is the Kin faction suffers enough losses. - The Shadow lord/Wraith lord was defeated in Wendar and Denagoth. - In Glantri, the D'Amberville family was released from captivity only 5-6 years ago. Etienne is the leader of the School, but his position is much more unstable than in the Gazetteer. He isn't Rad (the nuclear theme didn't fit my campaign anyway.) - Ala the Seawitch was defeated in Ostland, after she tried to incite rebellion in the Kelso island. the Ostmanns have been killed or exiled. Please inform me if you wish to have background info on the following subjects. I believe they'd make it easier to follow the coming war. - An abridged world history (a lot different from the canon) - Basic notes about the PC:s and their current political status - previous history and the exploits of the PC:s - Detailed accounts of the various countries before the Second Nomad War. I don't know whether someone is reading these posts or not, but since no one complains as well, I'm going on with my Ylari kits... Dervish ------- Role: the Dervish is a follower of the Way of the Scholar, but his devotion brings him to seclude himself in the wildest areas of the Alasiyan desert, where he can meditate upon the sayings of Al Kalim and contemplate the Eternal Truth. The Dervish studies and protects the nature and the life forms native of the desert, and tries to improve his attunement to the Eternal Truth through a discipline of hard physical exertion, exposure to the elements, and meditation. Requirements: Dervishes must be in peak physical condition. They are required to have a minimum Con score of 13. Moreover, they must have high Wisdom (12), and must be of Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral alignment. Class Modifications: Dervishes turn undead as other priests. They have full access to the following spheres: All, Animal, Divination, Elemental (Earth, Water and Air), Sun, and Weather. They have limited access to the spere of Healing. As a granted power, they are unaffected by hot or cold temperatures, behaving as if the temperature were nearer to 20 C by their level in C degrees (that is, a 10th level Dervish can work at any temperature between 10 C and 30 C as if it was 20 C). Weapon Proficiencies: due to their devotion to physical exercises, and their refusal to use weapon or armor, dervishes prefer martial arts, and they're always proficient in them. Dervishes can continue specialization in martial arts. They can otherwise choose to be proficient in any weapon. Non-Weapon Proficiencies: at first level, the Dervish receives the following proficiencies: Acrobatics, Reading/Writing, Meditation, Religion (Eternal Truth), Ceremony (Al Kalim), Endurance. He doesn't get any proficiency slot, except those for high Intelligence score. After that time, he is free to take any proficiency he wants, though many take Juggling, Jumping, Blind Fighting, Dancing or Animal Lore. Equipment: The only possessions a Dervish needs are his copy of the Nameh, and his clothes, which are usually very limited. Special Benefits: due to their incredible moral and physical qualities, Dervishes enjoy a special +2 bonus to all saving throws. Special Hindrances: The dervish must meditate and train himself with mental and physical exercises for most of his time. He must seclude himself from society. He can be moved from his occupations only by the constraints imposed upon them by the principles of the Eternal Truth. Dervishes do not desire material possessions, and will discard everything they don't need, giving it to the nearest temple of the Eternal Truth. Starting Wealth: Dervishes care nothing for material wealth, so they start with only their clothes, a copy of the Nameh, a sack, a waterskin and 4d4 dinars of foodstuff and other items. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 20:53:29 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Agathokles Subject: Re: A new recruit MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Ville V Lahde wrote: > > Hullo everybody. In X10 Bargle and Baron Hedricks arrive at Specularum with some Nomad envoys. Baron is supposed to make strong territorial demans (Luln, Sulescu, Korizegy region or the promosing river area north of Black Eagle) and thus start the civil war. Let's suppose instead that Hendricks has uncovered a plot by Bargle to eliminate him with the support of the two Nomad divisions that were shipped in. In my campaign a group of halfling Strikers that played a key role in defeating the lich cult will tip the PCs of the invasion. Hendricks could have contacted them... The PC Vizier could be vital in keeping the tribe united. > I guess the Dervish isn't exactly suitable for a PC either, unless you've only got a single player. Yes, the dervish is even less suitable than the Vizier, but he could join a party on an holy quest. > Isn't it strange for a Lawful character to be so solitary? That's the interesting point of the dervish. He is on a quest for perfection, but he cannot ignore the Dream of Justice and Honour. IMO, this is one of the few points that make a dervish playable as PC. > Question: Are there female Dervishes? I function quite well at both 10 and 30 degrees Celsius for long periods of time, unless I'm naked, in which case I don't function too well at any temperature, because I'm too embarrassed. Ok, I think I was not clear in my explanation. The dervish in my example would fuction at 40 C as if he was at 30 C, which is where the power is really useful. So, even a 5th level dervish would get a good advantage from this power (at 40 C, he would feels as if he was at 35 C, which is not bad, IMO). If you want to make the power immediately useful to starting characters, you could have it work at level+5. > Is this martial arts ability purely for defending himself? It is for perfecting himself. The dervish can actually use any weapon to hunt or fight, if he so desires. > How does he get food in the desert without some sort of hunting or weapon skill? Ah, that's why fasting is an important part of the training ;) Ok, jokes apart, low level dervishes are not supposed to be able to survive by themselves (they might be, with an adequate choice of proficiencies). They instead live with a master, or in the more temperate areas near some tribe, which can provide food or assistance. Mid to high level dervishes can use spells or hunting to get food. >> many take >> Juggling, Jumping, Blind Fighting, Dancing or Animal Lore. > > Dancing? What purpose does it serve? Is it just to develop their physical skills in new areas, or is it another way of honoring Al-Kalim? It is both, as the dervish honours Al Kalim through his physical exercises. >> Special Benefits: due to their incredible moral and physical qualities, >> Dervishes enjoy a special +2 bonus to all saving throws. > > Isn't that excessive? Otherwise any character with "incredible moral and physical qualities" (needs to be defined) would get +2 bonus to all STs. I gave them the bonus to translate the fact that OD&D dervishes save as dwarves. BTW, the only bonus they would get from high ability scores is the Wisdom bonus to saves vs. mind attacks, AFAIK. > There, that was a bit of feedback and critique. Ah, that would be a masterful plan for Bargle, since von Hendricks would have an hard time convincing Stefan and the PCs that he's on their side, as this could easily be considered an attempt to lead them in a trap. But perhaps von Hendricks could use some less direct means, such as the Halflings in your campaign, or just fall back on his usual ways, and try to blackmail the PCs or something like that (Lathan's Gold style). This would make for a good surprise for the players. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 13:17:39 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Glantri Parody - Ice Queen MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Angelo Bertolli provided us with another = excellent passtime. There were two or three Dragon articles that I found particularly usefull. 2 were written by Bruce Heard (#170 and 171 IIRC). One dealt with dragon society in general, while the other dealt with some particular dragons in the KW region. The other Dragon article I found usefull was on creating PC-half-dragons. There's also a Wyrmteeth article by Bruce up in the Vaults of Pandius. Look in the Heldannic Knights section. I don't know how much info you will actually find on the dragons themselves though. I do have to say that I like Giulio's and my version better. There are more details about how the dragons interact with (and manipulate) the local human/demi-human populations. Those dragons have some nasty secrets hidden beneath the mountains... At one time we had planned on adding info about some giant clans, but we never seemed to get around to it. You up for doing some more Wyrmteeth, Giulio? I can't really remember if I got this idea from the affore mentioned Dragon articles, or if I created it myself (I think I picked it up from somewhere though), but I seem to recall that some dragons who produced half-dragon offspring might become renegades. IMC I've created a small society of renegade dragons and their half dragon ofspring that have banded together for mutual protection. I've got some of this info on my various web pages. If you're interested I could direct you there. John ===== Rule #53. If the beautiful princess that I capture says "I'll never marry you! This is something I am working on for my own purposes. So far I have placed Thyatis, Karameikos, the Northern Reaches, Minrothad, Five Shires, Heldannic Freeholds, Darokin, Alfheim, Wendar, Denagoth, Glantri, Ethengar, Ylaruam, and Sind. I have an no idea what would work for Alphatia, I have a decent proto-Isle of Dawn concept, except that I'm not satisfied with it. Sind, and Ylaruam are only vague location with no detail at all so far. I am stumped on placing Irendi to my satisfaction. I have a place for the Atruaghin clans, but only 4 of the 5 clans seem to fit well with what I have planned, so I am delaying finalizing them. The "Broken Lands" were kind of a putty concept that I used to fill in a little here and a little there, so I couldn't say there was a one location for them. There are lots of "Broken Lands" all over. Also, as things are working out there is a location that I am fond of for Rockhome, but I am weighing having multiple dwarven nations based on a Rockhome mold, which would change things so I haven't placed them. If you are interested, I can send a sample of where I am so far... Glad to finally hear from someone else with a long running campaign!(mine started in 1984) X10 is a great adventure which dictated alot of my campaign history (which also differs substantially from "canon"). Please keep us updated on your progress. Will you be playing out the whole War Machine part? How about the Battlesystem stuff? Personally, these were some of our most memorable gaming sessions, and the large amount of time invested was worth it. [snip] > - There is NO Hollow World. Period. I too once held to that opinion. Then I got the HW set as a gift, somehow a few PCs ended up there, and they've been trying to get back home since '94. It's a pretty interesting setting, but I was dead set against it at first. [snip interesting campaign modifications] I'm glad to see that you have a rich, adaptable, campaign going on, with the PCs having significant effects on the game. > Please inform me if you wish to have background info on the following subjects. > I believe they'd make it easier to follow the coming war. > - An abridged world history (a lot different from the canon) > - Basic notes about the PC:s and their current political status > - previous history and the exploits of the PC:s > - Detailed accounts of the various countries before the Second Nomad War. Sure, send it on when you get the chance (just break it up into readable segments, though). This is the kind of stuff that all of us can get ideas from. Actually, I would like to see more of this type of campaign info from the MML in general. Good luck with X10! I always thought it was kind of weird that the dwarves never spread out beyond Rockhome. In my campaign I had decided they had ancient cities in the Cruth mountains of Karameikos and the Shires, some of which had been abandoned to goblins and bugbears. > If you are interested, I can send a sample of > where I am so far... I never got the other Nomad modules early enough to use them in my campaign, but later when I got the X4 I built one period in the "500 years ago" campaign on that. I have been very happy with the solution that the first emergence of Hosadus is a historical event, which I have been hinting at in countless handouts. Thus the new war will really mean something for the PCs. I will play the whole War Machine campaign as a background of the campaign. Me and my friend, who is a boardgame enthusiast, have been trying it out a few times. The biggest problem with the campaign is that the Nomad invasion will most likely dry out before it even started. I decided that in my campaign the lakeside forts in Darokin (the invasion routes) will be manned only by small fractions of legions. Still their existence, which is necessary to keep Darokin's defence strategy plausible, hinders the Nomad advance so much that conquering Akorros will be very difficult. Our solution was to introduce "a Master factor" for every battle that precedes the introduction of Glantri in the war: the sand storms, the flying ships and shock troops from the Legion of Death. Glantri council offsets this bonus, and at the same time the PCs won't start whining why the wizards aren't doing anything. Also, I give all troops including stone juggernauts a bonus in city battles. We'll also be using Battlesystem fully through the module. The players have been familiarised with it in two large battles during a period when the PCs were scattered (two years of solo gaming to bring life to the PCs and their dominions). One of them included a full Thyatian colonial legion and rebel Hinterlander troops. You know, Braveheart-style. You asked for more stuff about my campaign in easily digestable form. I'm a total neophyte with the net and mailing list, but am I right in presuming that ANY attachments will put too much strain on the server? It's really the only quick mass combat system that you can use if you run a major war, and it actually works quite well with X10. Without playing out the whole war as backdrop, X10 loses alot of its punch. What I typically do is set up some type of heroics or role-playing adventure for key battles that involve the PCs. It also worked good in CM1, M2, and many other times IMC. In fact, several players know the "Tactics" on d6 by heart. If you want to play out a battle in greater detail, try Battlesystem - but bear in mind that it will take about 12 hours to play out 1 battle that the War Machine would do in 5 minutes. In my experience, I haven't found any other alternatives for mass combat. Why do you think it "sucks"? That way, the idea of them not having any natural children, but there having been a prince of Ostland killed by Thincol's daughter remains intact. Either way works fine, though. Another question- you've mentioned that you have plans to do something with/about the Seawitch (from X13). In X13, it's mentioned that she (IIRC) is the daughter of the previous king of Ostland- do you have plans to run with this, and connect her to Hord, or no? ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 23:31:59 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Andrew Theisen Subject: Prestige Class: Caerdwiccan Pirate Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Here's something I've been working back; it's roughly based on the Freeport Pirate on Greenronin's website (http://www.greenronin.com), but with some new and different features. It would probably also work out well as a Northern Reaches viking-type berserker. I'd be interested in feedback, as always: Caerdwiccan Pirate The Straits of Barbarossa are known throughout the Sea of Dawn as a haven for pirates and corsairs of all sorts and stripes. The region is distant enough from its imperial overlords to provide a measure of protection to the lawless buccaneers, yet is near enough to the major trade routes to provide a sufficient livelihood for their illicit occupations. Though all manner of pirates frequent the ports of Caerdwicca, there exists a special breed of seagoing scalawags who call the nation their home. They are a strange mixture of nautical rogue mixed blended with the clannish nature and warlike ways of their distant forebears from the highlands of the world of Laterre. Each ship is a family unto itself- clan tartans fly freely from the masts of their vessels; crews are bonded by ties closer than blood. The sight of these vessels is enough to panic even the most hardened of mariners- the bloodthirsty battle cries of kilt wearing, woad painted Caerdwiccan Pirates is unnerving to say the least. Fighters and barbarians are most likely to become Caerdwiccan Pirates, though rogues are certainly not unknown among their ranks. Bards, too, occasionally pursue the pirate life, where they are known as skalds. Clerics of maritime gods sometimes become pirates, as do druids that focus on the element of water. Sorcerors and wizards are unlikely to be Caerdwiccan Pirates, due to the highlanders' tendency to distrust and fear magic. Paladins and monks never become Caerdwiccan Pirates, owing to their lawful natures. Hit Die: d10 Requirements To qualify to become a Caerdwiccan Pirate (CPr), a character must fulfill the following criteria. Alignment: Any non-lawful. Feats: Brawler, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword), Mariner, Power Attack. Knowledge (Sea Lore): 4 ranks Profession (Sailor): 6 ranks Swim: 4 ranks Special: The Caerdwiccan Pirate must be inducted into the crew "family", either be being a blood relative of one of the crew, or by being adopted by the captain of the vessel. Level Base Attack Fort Ref Will Special 1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Sea Legs, Reckless Abandon 2nd +2 +3 +0 +0 Berserker 1/day, Rope Monkey 3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 Highland Chant 4th +4 +4 +1 +1 Cleave 5th +5 +4 +1 +1 Life is Cheap 6th +6 +5 +2 +2 Berserker 2/day 7th +7 +5 +2 +2 Lungs of Legend 8th +8 +6 +2 +2 Great Cleave 9th +9 +6 +3 +3 Fearsome Reputation 10th +10 +7 +3 +3 Berserker 3/day, No longer winded after rage Class Skills The Caerdwiccan Pirate's class skills (and the key ability for each) are: Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (shipbuilding, sailmaking) (Int), Intimidate (Cha), Intuit Direction (Wis), Knowledge (boating, cartography, Freeport legend or history, geography, navigation, sea lore) (Int), Profession (sailor) (Int), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Use Rope (Dex). Skill points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifer. Class Features Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Caerdwiccan Pirate is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, but no type of armor or shields. Wearing armor on the high seas is suicidal, and it is avoided by any pirate worth his salt. Caerdwiccan Pirates are most fond of their tremendous claymores (as bastard sword), but other common pirate weapons include the cutlass (as scimitar), the boarding pike (as shortspear), the belaying pin (as club), and the gaff (1d4, x3). Berserker: Beginning at 1st level, the Caerdwiccan Pirate may enter into a terrible battle frenzy. This ability functions like the barbarian rage ability, granting a temporary +4 to Strength and Constitution, a +2 morale bonus on Will saves, and a -2 penalty to AC. The bonus to Constitution increases the pirate's hit points by 2 points per character level, but these points go away at the end of the rage. While raging, the Caerdwiccan Pirate cannot use skills or abilities requiring concentration and patience (including such skills as Craft, Handle Animal, and Intuit Direction). He may use any feat he has except for Expertise, item creation feats, metamagic feats, and Skill Focus (if tied to a skill requiring concentration). The berserk fury lasts a number of rounds equal to 3 + the pirate's (newly improved) Constitution modifier. The pirate may end his berserk fury prematurely. At the end of the fury, the pirate is fatigued (-2 to Strength and Dexterity, can't charge or run) for the duration of that encounter (unless the pirate is 10th level, when this limit no longer applies). The pirate may only fly into a fury once per encounter, and only a certain number of times per day (as indicated in the table above). In all other aspects, this ability is identical to the barbarian rage ability, as depicted on p. 25 of the Player's Handbook. Sea Legs: A pirate spends years at sea, and learns to stay on his feet during fair weather and foul. A Dawn Sea Pirate gains a +2 competence bonus to all Balance checks. Furthermore, a successful check allows a full move instead of a half move. A failed check still means no movement at all. Reckless Abandon: No one fights quite like a pirate. Scorning armor, the pirate defies death with style and panache. Due to his fearlessness and swashbuckling demeanor, the pirate adds his Cha bonus (if any) to his Dex bonus to modify his Armor Class. This bonus is lost if the pirate wears any armor. You can't look fearless while hiding behind a tower shield! Rope Monkey: Experienced seamen can climb rigging and ropes with the speed and dexterity of monkeys. Starting at 2nd level a pirate retains his Dex bonus to AC while climbing or fighting on rigging, ropes, or even masts. Furthermore, opponents gain no bonus to hit in these circumstances. Highland Chant: When the Caerdwiccan Pirate sings his war chants across the decks, it inspires his allies to greater deeds. This ability functions as the bard's inspire courage ability (p. 28 of the Player's Handbook). This bonus lasts a number of rounds equal to the pirate's Charisma bonus, and a pirate may chant a number of times per day equal to his pirate level. Cleave: At 4th level, the Caerdwiccan Pirate receives this feat for free. Life is Cheap: In the chaos of close-quarters shipboard fighting, pirates must be quick to survive. Foes must be dispatched with alacrity, and pirates learn effective if messy techniques to do so. At 5th level the Freeport Pirate can perform a coup de grace as a standard action instead of a full round action. Lungs of Legend: At 7th level a Freeport Pirate learns to survive underwater for extended periods of time. He can hold his breath for a number of rounds equal to quadruple his Constitution, instead of double Con as normal. See page 85 of the DMG for full rules on drowning. Great Cleave: At 8th level, the Caerdwiccan Pirate receives this feat for free. Fearsome Reputation: By 9th level such is the pirate's reputation that many foes flee at the mere sight of him. By announcing his presence and taking a dramatic action (like holding up the severed head of an enemy, for instance), a Caerdwiccan Pirate achieves the same effects as a fear spell cast by an 9th level sorcerer (use the pirate's Cha to determine DC). This is an extraordinary ability that can be used twice a day. (Here are the two feats mentioned in the requirements section): Mariner [General] Your people are renowned sailors, and your "sea legs" enable you to maintain sure footing in even the most treacherous conditions. Regions: Caerdwicca, Trikelios. Benefit: You get a +2 competence bonus to all Profession (sailor) and Balance checks. Brawler [General] You know how to pummel your opponents into unconsciousness with blunt objects, such as clubs, barstools, or leaden steins of ale. Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus of +1 or higher. Regions: Caerdwicca Benefit: When using a bludgeoning weapon in combat, you can choose to inflict subdual damage to your opponent instead of normal damage, with no penalty to your attack roll. Normal: A character using weapons that inflict normal damage (rather than subdual damage) in combat receive a -4 penalty to their attack roll, as they attempt to check their swing, use the flat of their blade, or otherwise strike nonvital areas. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 11:48:26 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Domains of Ostland - Zeamark MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Andrew Theisen wrote: > One thing I chose to do IMC, to not contradict GAZ7's statement of = Hord and > Yrsa being childless, was to make Alfgeir his chosen successor from = the > adopted jarl's children, but who was slain by Stefania. I reduced the ST bonus, and added some recommended proficiencies, both weapon and non-weapon. They have limited access to the sphere of Healing. As a granted power, they are unaffected by hot or cold temperatures, behaving as if the temperature were nearer to 20 C by their level in C degrees (that is, a 10th level Dervish can work at any temperature between 10 C and 30 C as if it was 20 C, and at 40 C as if he was only at 30 C). Weapon Proficiencies: due to their devotion to physical exercises, and their refusal to use weapon or armor, dervishes prefer martial arts, and they're always proficient in them. Dervishes can continue specialization in martial arts. They can otherwise choose to be proficient in any weapon. A dervish usually selects weapons that require more skill and concentration than brute force. Also, they rarely leave the desert, so they have little experience of foreign weapons. At first level, they can only choose short bows, scimitars, daggers, spears and other common Ylari weapons. After that time, he is free to take any proficiency he wants, though many take Survival (Desert), Juggling, Jumping, Blind Fighting, Dancing or Animal Lore. Survival (Desert) is especially useful, since it allows the dervish to retire deeper within the desert, and to rely on himself alone. Dancing has a double value, as a physical pursuit and as a way to honour Al Kalim and the Immortal Guardians. A dervish' Dancing skill revolves around traditional Ylari dances, and includes knowledge of the ancient dances codified by the desert druids well before Al Kalim's age. Equipment: The only possessions a Dervish needs are his copy of the Nameh, and his clothes, which are usually very limited. Special Benefits: due to their incredible moral and physical qualities, Dervishes enjoy a special +1 bonus to saving throws against poison, wands/rods/staves, and magic. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 18:59:28 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Agathokles Subject: Ylari Itinerant priest kit MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This kits completes the triad of clerical roles in the Emirates. The usual reminder stands, that I only have the Italian translation of the Gaz, so names can be incorrect (starting with Itinerant...) Itinerant --------- Role: Itinerants are wandering cleric-adventurers. They roam the Emirates, spreading the word of the Eternal Truth, helping the local governements through their skills, and searching adventure. Requirements: As Priest of the Eternal Truth, Itinerants must be Lawful. They usually aren't Evil, since the Itinerant life does not appeal to the power-hungry. In addition to the Wis requirements for Clerics, they must have a minimum Cha score of 9, since they have to deal with the complex etiquette of the Alasiyan society. Class Modifications: Itinerants receive the same spells as other Priests of the Eternal Truth, and are able to turn undead. Weapon Proficiencies: Itinerant may select any blunt weapon, plus dagger and scimitar. Non-Weapon Proficiencies: Itinerant receive the Storytelling and Ceremony (Al Kalim) proficiency for free. They must take the Etiquette and Religion (Eternal Truth) proficiencies. Recommended choices are additional slots in Religion, either broadening the Itinerant's knowledge of foreign cults, or focusing on the Eternal Truth's theology; Local History and Information Gathering, since the Itinerant is also a dealer in news and gossip; Riding, Land Based, either horse or camel specialty. Equipment: Itinerant priests outfit themselves as they like. However, they always display their holy symbol prominently. Special Benefits: through their travels, Itinerants receive many useful pieces of information and get many contacts. Moreover, the local authorities and temples will support the Itinerant, as long as he remains in good standing with them. Itinerants will receive hospitality in the zawiyas for an unlimited time. Special Hindrances: as he can receive help and information from the locals, the Itinerant is bound by his vows to help his fellow believers, and the local authorities, both civil and religious, will prevail upon him in times of need. Moreover, the Itinerant is supposed to travel from village to village. While he is free to stay at the local zawiya, the prayer leaders frown upon lazy Itinerants, and tend to find lots of errands that will keep him busy. Starting Wealth: Itinerant priests receive standard funds. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 20:50:01 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara Sender: Mystara From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Domains of Ostland - Zeamark MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Andrew Theisen wrote: > BTW- I started a couple of 1 mile/hex maps (similar to the 1 mile/hex = map > of Morlay/Malinbois in PC4) of a few of the Ostland domains a while = back, > based on your writeups.
