Well... the original, B2: Keep on the Borderlands, was not set in Mystara per se. In fact, there are a few vague references to Greyhawk (it was written by Gygax, afterall), I believe. Later, when Mystara as we know came to be, they placed all of the B-series specifically in Mystara (see B1-9 which I, unfortunately, do not own). Anyway, I think it's pretty good for what it was intended to be - an introductory module for new Dm's & players. It had a decent amount of potential if you care to rework it. That's where Return to Keep on the Borderlands comes in. It was *definitely* set in Greyhawk. However, there are still several miscellaneous references to Mystara: NPC's Dobricus d'Ambreville (a distant relative) & Third (from Cyndicea). Anyway, I really liked what they did with this one. There is enough there to start a party out and easily take them up to 4th or 5th level while remaining in the same area. What I've been working on, though, is combining the best bits of both versions into my version of Verge and its surrounds. I'll post it (complete w/ map) to the Corliss Enterprises, Ltd. site when it's suitable for public consumption. As far as a 3e update, I haven't heard anything on it, but anything's possible. I would tend to think it unlikely, as no new Mystara material will be released by Wizards and even new Greyhawk stuff is rare at best. They would have to share their main power base with 5 more Immortals. IMO, they did accept Stefan's invasion because they saw the need for a stronger kingdom to be created in Traladara, but their policy towards the CoK and Thyatians in general is to dilute the Thyatian influence, so that in a few generations they could have a Traladaran kingdom (and perhaps a Traladaran king). Hmmmmmmmm... That > gives me some ideas.. :) Thank you! The discussion was interesting, and brought up a point I had never considered (that is, why the patrons of the CoK got into that pantheon, and what do they represent in the church's theology). Also, it has given me too some ideas. One concerns the effects of the Immortals' portfolio on a certain church, when an item of the portfolio doesn't really fit with the church philosophy. While I agree that serious bones of contention are routinely kept secret (like Asterius' interest in thieves), I think that minor items who aren't really opposed to the church's philosophy (trade or the moon, in Asterius' case) would be weaved within the rituals and symbols of the church, even if without a conscious effort by the priesthood. For example, the moon is part of the symbol of the CoK (moon, sun & scepter, IIRC), even though it has little to do with the church's doctrine. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 18:51:35 -0500 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Mischa Gelman Subject: Re: Mailing List GAZ In-Reply-To: <200105010348.XAA04429@freenet10.carleton.ca> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII > I can't speak for the HWRs or Alex's work, but the Cynidicea sourcebook, The HWRs should fit perfectly well into the canon material, as I didn't want to make any drastic changes to the world. OTOH, I wouldn't count them as canon since they're fan-made rather than published (and we've had this debate as to what's canon more than enough times). Also, except for the Tanagoro one, they only come to 3-16 printed pages (YMMV, depending on font), hardly large enough for a published product. If someone wanted to combine all of them and work to get TSR's sanction for publishing, I would have no problem, but I assume all the other contributors would have to be tracked down and not all of them are still on the list (Cecil Cosmin? Thorfinn Tait?). Similarly, the Net Almanacs were all team efforts, probably necessitating approval from every source before publishing could be considered. The Lost City project was much smaller, as there were only 5?10? of us, with Geoff doing most of the work, so that's more plausible. > and said, "Wouldn't it be cool if Cynidicea were like [insert concept > here]?". Bad artwork (HWR1 leaps to mind) can ruin one's impression of a product, while good artwork (the second Creature Catalogue, for instance) can definitely make something more appealing by adding the visual element to plain text. Finding good fantasy artists, though, is very hard - just look at the trashy covers on most fantasy novels. - Mischa To elect as many right-wing Republicans to office is hardly an adequate response to a spiritual crisis. If you are planning to start a low-level campaign and move on to "expert" levels, then "Night's Dark Terror" is clearly your choice. Just make sure that you have the big fold-out map and preferably the counters (someone told on the list a few weeks ago that he/she had bought a copy without them). The module is situated in Karameikos, and can't in my opinion be easily switched elsewhere. But your campaign doesn't need to center on Karameikos, I once planned using it in a merchant campaign. (Actually, the small English flag on the cover of a TSR module is generally a mark of a well written and well thought-out module. See AD&D's "When a star falls", for example) Another good start for a campaign is the solo adventure "Blade of Vengeance", if you prefer expert-level PC's. One ouf our long-lasting (10 years) campaigns was started that way. However, I don't think that it fits very well with gazetteers, as the world is a lot more "civilised" in them. I situated the adventure around 500 AC. (Erystelle is still alive and kicking, although he lost Scorbane in a dramatic fight. Rith now he's limping his way to Braej. It's great to get a chance to play with flaems.) Chateau d'Amberville was one of the best experiences in my DM career, even if the adventure might be a bit too humorous for some. You get a chance to have a few interesting sessions in a world resembling our Earth (or you can do like me and decide that it IS Earth), which allows for some tasty crossovers. In my campaign a strange monotheistic cult has infiltrated Mystara through the Amberville portal... They were behind a slave rebellion that threw Thyatians out of Hinterlands. I used the adventure in 1000AC, so my campaign deviates a lot from the canon (Etienne was released much earlier in the Gazetteer). X13 is one of the best non-British modules, but you'll have some trouble using it in the Vestland that you know from Gazetteers. Instead of the Norse gods you have a nationalistic religion of Forsett. My solution was to ditch the Norse gods altogether, as I always thought they messed up much of the world history and cosmology in the Gazetteer series. - One of the best things about this adventure is that you get a good evil adversary who won't be defeated during the adventure. In my campaign Ala the Seawitch formed the backbone of a long Reaches sub-campaign (a period of solo-gaming with one PC) Another example of good writing is X11, The Saga of the Shadowlord. A whole new country is introduced, and with the help of the Vault of Pandius you can find a whole new region for adventures. Also Wendar and Denagoth serve well as "white edges of the map" for your own ideas that you don't want to conflict with published material. One decent module that nobody mentioned is "Skarda's mirror". I always liked it, even though my group never got the hang of it. With some rewriting it can be used anywhere in the Known World. A question: Did anyone use the oldie "War rafts of Kron" in their campaign? It is a very difficult adventure to play out and oddly written (it's hard to find any structure in the story- because you have to decide it yourself), but to my surprise I liked it a lot. I have used the War Rafts of Kron on 3 separate campaigns, at my growing skill levels as a DM. The first time I played it straight from the book, worked rather well as the players did not mind doing an ocean adventure. The second time started as a random encounter, the new players were actually going on another mission and had their boat sunk and lost at sea. The 3rd time I had the HW series and used the Millenean plot (the war rafts were from Traladarans that did not settle on Davania). This worked rather well, as the players were Minrothad Merchants and were able to boost up to Princes as they instituted exclusive trade relations with the war rafts. Excellent product, not many players like to go to sea though. A good adventure or long term campaign hook would be for players to actually make Ierendi an important enough nation that would give other players something to really do there. IMC I had Vilaverde and Texerias build colonies of pirates there to raid Thyatian merchants on the way to the Hinterlands. This of course meant that the weaker colonists from Vilaverde and Texerias in Davania stand a better chance than Thyatis. This could better be done from Cubia, but Thyatian reprisals would have to go through Minrothad, and Cubia can claim innocence. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 13:40:48 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Christopher Cherrington Subject: Re: Adventuring in Ierendi MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" -----Original Message----- From: Joe Kelly [mailto:joe_kelly@DAVIS.CA] Anybody have any cool adventure ideas for Ierendi? Ierendi boasts the best Naval Academy in the world, use this for non-spellcaters to join while the spellcasters join the School of Magic in Glantri or in Karameikos. This way you can play adventures for academics for the mages, and quick and dirty ocean adventures that would teach valuable skills to the mundaners. Other than that, I'm not sure, good luck! JK Wolf I thought of that, but first they would have to get to the HW. They think they can some how buoy up the whirlpool. The physics of whirlpools does allow ripples of up currents, even at the center of the vortex, but the vortex ends in an anti-gravitational pull and is in a tunnel (RW physics does not really count how a vortex ends if there is no gravity) Of course they do have to get to one edge of the anti-gravity plane and fall to the surface, that would end the debate. ;) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 21:30:04 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Alphatian Whirlpool MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Christopher Cherrington = wrote: > Quick question, I had 2 players teleport to a location inside the = whirlpool. > They had adequate magical protection (ring of free action, elemental > protection, et..) I have no idea *what*, probably something bizarre. Maybe it's an extradimenional pocket, sort of a polyp dangling off the wormhole. Maybe the creature preys on things that get sucked in, but finds the PCs amusing for some reason and may be inclined to play with them instead (as a cat plays with a mouse). I'm thinking along the lines of Elric or Corum, or even Cugel the Clever: those characters were always running into strange characters in unlikely places. Alternately, if the PCs have no immortal allies, an immortal could see their predicament and bargain to save them, but on outrageous terms. This would probably be an entropic immortal who enjoys toying with mortals and spreading chaos (Hel springs to mind), and would probably involve some horrendous service in the bargain. Of course making any sort of bargain with such an immortal is a very chaotic act. (If it were 3e, I'd suggest the immortal offers to save them if one will swear allegiance and become a Blackguard!) Finally, doesn't the whirlpool lead to the plane of water? Why not just body-surf all the way through? It can't be much worse than just staying where they are! I feel rather obliged to speak up for the apparently small minority of us who actually liked Gaz4. A lot of the adventure hooks in there are really very useful, even if you decide that Safari Island is just too far-fetched. A few other suggestions: The density of adventurers on the main island should probably mean that most of the adventures should focus on human vs. human competition rather than endless monster-bashing. Even if the PCs aren't too power hungry themselves, they'll certainly want to retrieve their stolen spellbooks or magic items (evil grin)... Neither X1 nor XSolo provides any information about what language is spoken by the indigenous populations of the Thanegioth Archipelago. IMC I decided the Makai and Thanegioth are closely related and still speak very similar languages, giving Ierendi a significant advantage in expanding to the south... If you're a fan of computer games, Quest for Glory V: Dragonfire is set in an island nation that is, in many ways, similar to Ierendi (the entire series is very similar to D&D and almost everything within can easily be transferred to Mystara). It might be worth checking out, since the basic ideas within could easily make up a very extensive campaign... If you have the Book of Wondrous Inventions (I think that's what it's called) you could have a clan of gnomes pitch the submarine to the Royal Navy--the combination of submersibles and fireships would make Ierendi a near-invincible naval power... at least until the next country gets them too... As the only country other than Ylaruam with a significant community of Kin-faction True Believers, Ierendi could become a very interesting setting when and if the Kin faction siezes control in Ylaruam. The notion of Ylari militants gaining support from the oppressed Makai (more likely on some of the outlying islands) and trying to overthrow the current regime could provide some very interesting adventure hooks and moral dillemmas on both sides... Al-Kalim's wise to try to expand in Ierendi: there's quite a vacuum of immortals there, which could likely be exploited by pretty much any immortal who might figure prominently in your campaign... Honor Island, IMHO, has been suspiciously quiet lately. Those mages have to be up to something, and probably no one wants to be too close when whatever or whoever wants to stop them arrives... As an ancient battleground between various elemental forces, there have to be closed gates to other planes/dimensions all over the islands... Each change in leadership should provide at least some change in priorities. This means that Ierendi can get involved in nearly any scheme and then just abandon it after a couple of years (e.g., "Let's build a canal between the Sea of Dread and the Gulf of Hule!" or "We need a strong ally to help defend us against Sindhi/Hulean/Thyatian/Undersea/Darokinian aggression: let's make friends with ___________." or "Sind, Karameikos, and Thyatis are all building up their aerial forces, we're more vulnerable to invasion than ever before, so we need our own airfleet" etc.). On the other hand, what if the new King (King Ludwig von Hendriks has a nice ring to it...) or Queen decide it's time to show those accursed Halflings a lesson once and for all? ;-) Anyway, I hope some of this helps :-) Now back to lurking... I went into a bit of converting Borges' bestiary into D&D stats, I had an old notebook with all the monster entries, but sadly it got lost in one of my movings... Most of the beings in it are drawn from folklore, which Borges embellished, sure... and for shapefshifters in German folklore, they seem to be so widespread!! I don't remember too much about the Baldanders, but the D&D old-timer, the doppelganger, (walking double) is a typical German creation. Notorious writer Goethe claims in his memories to have met his doppleganger in a forest ride, riding straight towards him. By curiosity's sake, Percy B. Shelley also claimed having met his double, saying the ominous phrase: "Shelley, untill when shall you go on feeling happy with yourself?"... All in all, I would say that those "free-shapeshifters" (those which, as seen by D&D, can change into any living being they meet) all come from ghosts, that is, a person meeting his own ghost before dying. There's a nice Spanish play in which a knight meets himself, asking him to turn back cuz death awaits him on the road. The play is XVIth century, but the legend is quite older. And you have the fetch in Celtic folklore, your double which comes out of your reflection in a pool to announce your death (hey, it became a AD&D monster too); and in quite a few places through Europe, mirror will be covered when there's a corpse in the house, as a reflection can call forth a ghost (this superstition has something to do with the myth of vampires not casting a reflection on mirrors, they are the reflection... Borges loves that, too, his entry on the People on the Other Side of the Mirror had me scared for months, finally they turned out in a Planescape module!) Anyway, that was rambling, I would like to get more detail on the Baldanders before Borges too, before turning into a boring linguist I was quite thrilled by all this folk critters research... I would really advise against that. I think the module is basically no good, and it really misses the wonderful possibilities an unknown archipelago has. Retireving lost treasures and battling koprus won't be interesting for long, especially if the PC's have been engaging in interaction with a lot of NPCs and getting a "feel" for the campaign world. X1 may be too alienating an experience after that. After returning to the mainland with a lot of treasure the PCs may feel unmotivated to do anything. Here's one idea I used for Thanegioth. My PC group was hired by the Thyatian ambassador in Karameikos to investigate some strange events around the Sea of Dread (the PCs had been established as reliable mercenaries in the X8 module). Thyatian merchant fleet and navy had been raided near Ochalea, Hinterlands and mainland Thyatis. There were only a clue clues, but some of them seemed to hint at a legendary archipelago somewhere in the middle of the Sea of Dread. The adventure started with a long tour in the ports Thyatis, Minrothad, Karameikos, Five Shires and Ierendi to gather obscure clues about Thanegioth. The PCs got the general directions to Thanegioth, but no maps. The Thanegioth adventures were built around a powerful mage called the Firelord. He was originally from Isle of Dawn, and had lost his family in Thyatian-Alphatian border skirmishes. Thus he harbored a lot of anger for both empires. The Firelord, "Daricus", had contacted the underground cult of Rathanos and formed a collective of fire-worshipping mages and priests. They fled to Thanegioth. The plan of Daricus was to build his own empire that could spark conflicts between the empires and weaken them substantially. In itself this would have been your run-of-the mill "the evil wizard who lives in the middle of nowhere and tries to rule the world"-adventure. But I established during the course of the campaign a history of another Warlord during/after the Nithian reign. Both Firelords were closely tied to the worship of Rathanos, more specifically his minion which I borrowed from H.P. Lovecraft (Cthuga). Daricus's master plan was to gather enough supporters to complete a ritual that would transfigurate him into a Nexus of Rathanos, an avatar-like entity. The first firelord has been opposed by a legendary hero of a race closely resembling weretigers, "Rak'stah"- of course the predecessors of the modern era rakastai. The PCs got involved into a struggle between the last remnants of rakastai on Isle of Dread and Daricus's colonization forces. This slingshotted them into similar struggles in the other islands of the arcipelago. If anyone is interested in these ideas, I might dig up the old paperwork and put something together. Or the cursed nature of the Nucleus of Spheres (NoS)? Mainly the curse. But with the Chamber of Spheres post Wrath Rafiel has drawn so much attention to himself that I feel it would be quite easy for the other immortals to get an inkling of what he's upto... (I don't think it would be that hard to figure out) I think that Wrath failed to deal with the other Immortals involvement in making the device drain energy. IMHO Ixion would be annoyed if not livid at the other Heirarchs (as I would argue that it would have to have been them that tinkered with it) for having done this - especially when the Wrath of the Immortals takes place (see the adventure when the Immortals are discussing what is to be done at the beginning). If we do suppose that the other Immortals did curse the artifact I think that it is less likely that Wrath would have happened (I could see Ixion (reluctantly) & Rad (very reluctantly) even siding together arguing that OK, they had caused an imbalance but the draining of magic was going to cause massive problems ('If you won't lift the curse... Let's just throw it into space....'). Basically I see that Ixion blames Rad for draining of energy (Rad may wish to continue his studies) but wouldn't they both be annoyed at the other spheres? (maybe xausing a different kind of Wrath of Immortals between Energy & Matter etc) >The problem with the cursed NoS is that other Immortals of the Sphere of Energy (specifically the great Hierarch Ixion) aren't too fond of having Energy drained from the world by the NoS. Thus, they would prefer to have it's use banned, which leads to WotI. Another thing I noticed recently (don't know why I didn't spot this 10 years ago..) was that in Dawn of the Emp. in AC:1000 there is a day without magic.... same as in Day of Dread in later stuff.... (It maybe that I just can't remember what the Rad force is in AC1000) The drain of entropy is interesting ... I liked the end of the article that someone did on it 'and everything really does go to hell...' It's a shame that this wasn't explicitly mentioned in the Almanacs (published WotC ones) - esp. because they had amble oppurtunity to (Synn, Glantri etc). If you are, you have handled it in a rather strange way, because I doubt the whirlpool goes all the way down to the worldshield - in fact I doubt any sea goes that far - as at the bottom of the New Alphatian Sea rests the sunken mainland Alphatian continent, at a depth that allows for exploring it with submersibles or whatever. Besides, the SM is a gate that pops out into the HW. But since you seem to have handled it differently, let's see how we can proceed from there. So, we assume that the whirlpool goes all the way down to the worldshield, where it ends, so it has created a hole in the sunken continent and everything below at the site of Sundsvall; also, it is not a magical gate. Well, if the PCs have been able to dive in it and are trapped there, why not others as well? There could be some other people trapped down there, maybe an exploration team whose submersible was aspired and who ended here unharmed (though the submersible took the damage and is ruined). There could be some other monsters as well, probably from sea races (that can also breathe air, though, because there must be air where your PCs arrived or they would have drowned), either humanoid (mermen, ..., whichever can breathe both water and air), or monstrous. Undead need not breathing, either, and some of them might have turned incorporeal or gaseous to avoid damage. All of these stranded inhabitants have been enslaved by a strange and creature. This creature knows how to leave (it comes and goes whenever it wants to), but of course it doesn't tell. The PCs must get that secret from their new master; for that, they might either try on their own, or collaborate with one or more of the others standed people because they need their assistance or their powers (magic doesn't work so they might need physical strength, or natural abilities that aren't cancelled). Since most of them want to leave, they can probably be convinced to help, but some may betray the PCs and turn them in (in the hope of getting rewarded with freedom). Since there is no magic, you'll have to decide what is the mean of leaving that place exactly. Here are a few possibilities: an artifact that transports to another place (the homeplane of the creature that enslave the PCs, maybe), a tunnel that leads to the HW, an upward-going whirlpool current, a burrowing pet (that eats earth - including worldshield ore - at one end and ejects it at the other, making using the burrowed tunnel unusable unless you are riding the beast - it could be a Burrower). Don't make it easy for the PCs - they got themselves into trouble, so make them learn of their mistake. In particular, have them have a hard time while they are enslaved, and really work hard to find a solution. To make it worse, their master probably confiscates everything from them (adieu Ring of Infinite Wishes...), and they will emerge with nothing but the dirty clothes on their backs (especially funny if they emerge in the HW or some unknown plane or place, rather than near their headquarters where they might plunder their treasury - or are they so untrusting that they carry all their gold with them?). ===== ___________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau http://www.geocities.com/hmusseau/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Instead the islands are ruled by a hereditary king and the people are a pretty even mix of Traladaran, Thyatian, and Atruaghin. That is, the cultures have intermarried and mingled, rather than retaining their own identities. (FWIW my Atruaghin is different too, with a medieval level of civilization and some seaports on the Sea of Dread.) Island history includes a sinister kingdom of civilized lizard men (think "Valusia" from Conan), a forgotten Kopru cult (heh heh), and old Thyatian colonies/mines/prison. Of course some vampires and lycanthropes have trickled down from the Traladaran forests. I'm keeping the albino and druid ideas but haven't decided what to do with them yet -- my players are not the type to wander around admiring the architecture; not yet sure about Honor Island. Ideally I want the place to feel dark, mysterious, swashbuckling, and not quite so tropical. A place you go to cautiously because you have business there, not for fun. While it has a king, he mostly rules Ierendi island and such coastal towns as his fleet can get to, but there are plenty of independent towns, pirate havens, and reclusive mages. I am considering dropping Freeport into the islands but haven't decided. I do like the idea of a native population, but I want them to be more sinister (even lovecraftian) and not quite so exotic, so I may make them Atruaghin or Traladaran instead. There is probably some lingering Thanegioth influence on the southernmost islands, owing to the former Kopru presence. I don't *hate* the Ierendi Gaz. It is fun to read, has beautiful artwork, and has some nice ideas, but it just doesn't fit the style of campaign I want to run. I would really advise > against that. I think the module is basically no good, and it really > misses the wonderful possibilities an unknown archipelago has. I like it. My group is there right now. The whole "lost world" aspect is lots of fun, and a great place to gain experience and make a name for yourself. I think the treasures in the module are too much; in BD&D they help provide needed experience, but in 3e they should be toned WAY down. They can also be replaced with more interesting treasures: rare beasts, ivory, native crafts, rare herbs and spices, archeological artifacts. I agree it misses possibilities, but you can't do them all. By nature, a "lost world" has to be remote, or it wouldn't be lost. Some ideas for expanding it: - If the kopru really had such a great civilization, there will almost certainly be more ruins around, and probably inhabited. I added "jungle orcs" (Kara-Kara from AC9) and it is likely that there are also more rakasta around on the larger islands. Also, aren't the merfolk and tritons supposed to be at war in this area? Imagine a Kopru cult among the undersea races, centered on a deep-sea volcanic vent. The Kopru themselves could be a race of servitors controlled by a Burrower. This could get very Cthulhu-esque. - IMC the Thyatians use the easternmost island as a waypoint between the mainland and the hinterlands. This consists of at least a fort and harbor. Ships have been blown off-course (westwards) so there could be small survivor colonies. - There are pirates around. This is a place to hide out when things get too hot up north, and they can also raid the Thyatian ships to the east. There could even be a Freeport-style pirate town somewhere in the Archipelago. (Several governments would pay handsomely to find it, and pay again to have it destroyed.) - Slave raiders, supplying the Thyatian markets. Thyatians may also hunt here for exotic animals, which must be captured alive and transported back to the arenas. - Nautical adventures. The voyage south, meeting pirates and monsters and hazards, was a lot of fun. - I think I read fan material somewhere about a Savage Coast colony on the western island. Not sure if I want that, but it's a possibility. Could also be colonies of Davanian peoples, or even a long-lost Hin colony. - The archipelago is a perfect place for PC holdings, if they don't want to be bothered with mainland politics. Carving out a barony should be both challenging and rewarding, and could attract further mainland interest, not to mention pirates. Or PCs could be pirates themselves. I can see where PCs who like politics may get bored there. OTOH this is a great roleplaying opportunity, getting sent to a nameless barbaric pest-hole ("lets just finish the mission and get home"). They can of course meet with Thyatians, pirates, and perhaps others. If they get really bored, have them caught in a terrific storm and blown westwards all the way to Yavdlom... IMC the players hired a crew and marines in Kerendas - the crew includes Traladarans, Thyatians, and a Hattian, plus a pair of hinterlanders and many others.. There is a lot of roleplay potential just on the ship, getting to know your crew and learn their secrets. Even if you're going to the middle of nowhere, you can take plenty of civilized conflict and backstabbing with you! Altough most GAZs make for a more interesting read and im usually the realistic, low-magic, no-nonsense DM, I like Ierendi so much. Sure you have to de-emphasize some aspects. But I mainly use it 100% unchanged. There is full of adventure hooks. In fact at least 1 per page. I think all GAZs should be like this ( for the number of adventure hooks ). As a matter of fact I played almost all of these hooks, plus every interesting tidbits of the GAZs in my previous campaign. I did some work on this a while back. Somewhere on Shawn's site, you'll find a timeline of Y'hog (an ancient holding of the Carnifex, now sunk), and their colonies of Va'ath Zhemoth (which would become the Thanegioth Archipelago one day). There, they had lizard man and troglodyte slaves, watched over by their kopru lieutenants (whose mental powers were excellent for keeping those slaves in line). Dinosaurs were used as guard animals, but when the Carnifex empire collapsed, the islands were forgotten, and the troglodytes' efforts at keeping up their part of the effort (supplying food to their motherland, for the islands were essentially plantations and farms) failed. The koprus' control wavered, and the dinosaurs could no longer be controlled - and they eentually ran wild, destroying many of the settlements. Those troglodytes who survived the collapse (subtly aided by the Immortals, who had no interest in seeing a remnant of the Outer Being-worshipping empire of Y'hog survive) soon devolved into savagery, and they now inhabit a couple of islands - having been driven off many of them by the arrival of humans and rakasta. Actually, a more recent article on the troglodyte island should be on Shawn's site as well - under the Thanegioth section, "Dark Worship in the Known World..." Just thought I'd mention it. So it does seem pretty strange, yes. It might be safe to assume for the moment that the ony one who knows about the real truth of the CoS is Rafiel himself, no other Immortals are aware of this. In fact it is stated that not even Rad was aware of the nature of the Soul Crystals; the CoS is an even better guarded secret. > >> Would Wrath have happened if this >> were actually the case? > >Wrath happened precisely because the NoS was cursed. Wrath II might come knocking if Rafiel succeeds in building the CoS. > For what it's worth, there are attempts to detail the CoS and describe its powers early in the 1016 Mystaran Almanac. A war started between the HW Schattenalfen and the Shadow Elves in the 1015 Mystaran Almanac. The cliff- hanger ending of MA 1015 was when the Schattenalfen attacked the City of Stars on the Day of Dread (DoD) to avoid the magic abilities of the Shadow Elves, but suddenly the Shadow Elves were able to cast spells during the DoD because the CoS had been completed. There is even specific information on what the Almanac team considered the CoS able to do early in the MA 1016, IIRC. If anyone's interested, you can find these references on the official site , or you can download the almanacs from . Reactions from the Immortals have not occured so far, but then they took a long time to respond to the NoS. Or maybe they just haven't finished reading those long, long almanacs ;) >> also what does Rafiel do >> >after Wrath about the Chamber of spheres? > >Here's the real problem. That would *definitely* provoke "reactions" from the Entropics to say the least! :) I assumed the new Immortals would be Immortals of Entropy, but you could be right. >Rafiel might be satisfied with this or he might want to further enhance the Sphere of Energy by finishing yet another artifact that will produce Immortals of the Sphere of Energy. This will surely lead to another Wrath since Energy will have severely upset the balance. Naturally, the Immortals will have to ponder the significance of an Old One (or was it something more sinister?) upsetting the balance in the first place by altering the NoS in Energy's favor. Seems the Old Ones are becoming desperate for new quick shake-and-bake Immortals, as I suggested in another post. Using the NoS or CoS to attain Immortality is not exactly an easy task, though, so I'm not so sure that the balance has been upset much. However I'm not the one who has to convince those Immortal Hierarchs that that's the case... > I'm not so sure if a new Wrath war would occur. There are two things to consider for that, I think. First, does use of the NoS still drain magic from Mystara? It always seemed to me that the use on Energy caused the drain on magic because magic seems to have Energy as its source. If that is the case, magic would no longer be drained since the NoS now draws upon Entropy. This has been discussed much in previous threads, but I'm still not certain. The second matter is how the Immortals would respond. If magic is still drained, then a response is more likely, except WotI sort of leaves you with the impression that the Immortals, even Ixion, has learned from the war that they should toy around with mortals like that. At least not to the extent they did during WotI. That was my impression, at least. - The Stalker ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 11:49:39 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: Mystara post wrath MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable The Stalker wrote: > On Thu, 3 May 2001 12:09:04 +0200, Jacob Skytte = wrote: > >Here's the real problem. That, and the fact that those using the Radiance to become Immortal are probably more inclined to the tenets of the Sphere of Energy by nature than any other sphere. Thus, now that the NoS drains Entropy rather than Energy, and since Rad's gone a-missin', perhaps the Entropics have their own agent in place keeping a watch on the NoS (Masauwu- their chief 'negotiator', perhaps). Maybe that's the reason Synn's been sent to Glantri by the Entropics (part of the reason, anyway?) Anyway, that's my theory. (BTW, Jacob- I got your message. The sphere of Entropy is twice as large as any of the other spheres. No worries there. Plus when Ixion discovered the CoS was draining Energy, that upset him, as it was a drain on the same source of his and all his underlings power, Energy. As for the other Immortals in the other Spheres, their curse was more of a fix to keep this Energy from CoS going rampant without consequence. The Old One changing CoS to drain Entropy is a direct consequence to using it's power. Anything that deals with Entropy will eventually corrupt. I believe the Entropic Immortals know this, so are not upset of their drain on Entropy, and sending Synn to wreak havoc on Glantri is a direct response. Who better to know how to take corruptible power and corrupt it even more than those aligned with Entropy? Pre Wrath CoS was depleting magic from the Mystara (a bad thing for everything), Post Wrath CoS will now have a different cost, your own corruptible self (a bad thing for you, but not the rest of the world). ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 08:32:57 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Christopher Cherrington Subject: Re: Mystara post wrath MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Addendum: The CoS in Post Wrath will still be able to create Immortals of the Sphere of Energy, the only known use of its power by mortals. Now that Entropy as a direct line to this power, it will try to get Entropic candidates to use it's source, or corrupt Energy candidates. Eventually the CoS will corrupt itself before the drain on Entropy will stop decaying Mystara. When this happens, magic will have such a less influential aspect in Mystara that energy beings like Dragons, Elves, and the like will be none existent, and the use of magic will be greatly extinct. The NoS should still produce Energy Immortals; remember that the drain on Energy was the result of the other Sphere's curse on the NoS, and not of the Immortal-creation process. So this function of the sphere shouldn't be affected by switching the drain to Entropy (maybe the Old Ones now consider Entropy to be unbalanced and are using the NoS to rectify the situation?) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 23:43:54 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Sverre Midthjell Subject: Re: Mystara post wrath In-Reply-To: <20010504143135.9570.qmail@web14208.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > Somebody (I can't recall who at the moment) already did a > write-up on this. This may help in at least some way (From the America Heritage Dictionary)- entropy- 1.Symbol S For a closed thermodynamic system, a quantitative measure of the amount of thermal energy not available to do work. 2.A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system. 3.A measure of the number of bits necessary to transmit a message as a function of the probability that the message will consist of a specific set of symbols. 4.A hypothetical tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity. 5.Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society. I think number 4 is the one that applies best to what we're talking about here. Wasn't it referred to in the original Immortals box and some modules as the "Sphere of Death"? Maybe they should have stuck with that name- makes things easier on us lol Anyway, there it is as a basis for figuring out what function the Sphere performs in the Mystaraverse. I ignored those possibilities because a simple reversal of the drain was the easiest to explain. Entropy opposes all other Spheres, so a drain of that Sphere should strengthen Matter, Thought, and Time as well as Energy. However, I focused on Energy and thereby envisioned it becoming more and more powerful until it "overloaded" and went "boom" -- which was what I needed for my "Mystara 2000" setting. Keep in mind that the starting point was that setting -- my account of the reverse drain of the NoS was concocted to support that setting. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 10:48:06 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: "fulviobaudo@libero.it" Subject: Re: Adventuring in Ierendi MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I once wrote a short adventure for my campaign based on Gaamo (sorry, I dont remember the name of the Island and I dont have the GAZ with me at the moment). Most likely, part of the cult are true followers of Halav and another part are controlled by some entropic Immortal. I came up with this system for extending the class levels. One of the things that prompted me to do that is the conversation about why elves only go up to level 10. But I not only extended the demi-human levels above their maximum, but all classes can technically go above level 36. When you first look at it, it seems unbalanced because the demi-human classes don't seem to need much more experience than the human classes. But think of this: the demi-human classes begin to require these large amounts of experience at an early level, where the human classes enjoy going up a level around every 100,000 until they hit level 36. I will add some extended experience charts to the document shortly, and you will see what I mean. http://members.fortunecity.com/abertoll/dnd/levels.html Angelo _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 00:34:40 EDT Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Ryan Seratt Subject: Re: Dymark Dread/Lake of Lost Dreams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 5/4/2001 1:25:29 PM Central Daylight Time, irmo@RAMTOPS.DEMON.CO.UK writes: > (and no, I don't have access to the > Lorien, Don't look too hard for this module. Or am I best to leave that stone uncovered? Easy. Levels are not a function of time, they are a function of adventures. Characters can level very quickly, going up multiple levels of a few days or weeks of solid dungeon crawling. Now, the reason why the world isn't full of high level characters of any race is the mortality rate. Every adventure has a (small or high) risk of permanent death. This risk is basically the same for all of the races. To paraphrase the old saying, "there are old elves, and there are bold elves, but there are no old bold elves". Because there are more humans than elves in the world, and as humans breed so quickly, there are more powerful humans than powerful elves. -- knight@ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au | "You're not our only customer you glennb@ichr.uwa.edu.au | know" "But we're one of the few http://www.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/~knight/ | with tactical nuclear weapons" ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 17:21:43 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: The Stalker Subject: Re: Dymark Dread/Lake of Lost Dreams On Sun, 6 May 2001 09:38:37 +0100, Lorien Weller wrote: >I have all of the gaz except Ethengar, Atraughin (both of which I should be getting soon) , Rockhome & Five Shires. The green dragon is named Argos as it was stated before, but before you jump into it, you might want to check out the article Bruce Heard wrote where it was mentioned, way back in Dragon no. 171. If you don't have that, don't worry because you can find it on the starflung site, then link is . This is under the races/dragons/ directories, and you might want to check that out because there are a few other articles dealing with dragons on Mystara there too. Naturally, you don't have to go with that if you don't like it, but it could be helpful inspiration. >It's a shame that more info hasn't been given on the Lake of Lost Dreams in any of the further published material :( but I guess thta >lets us DMs do what we want to it :) > Or it allows someone to do work that establishes it. << Yeah, and I probably wouldn't use your Mystara 2000 write up "as-is" for my own campaign. I'd have to tweak it out a bit. The point that it makes though (and the point that I like) is that a switch from the NoS draining Energy to Entropy doesn't necessarily equate to a "fix". There were problems associated with the NoS when it drained Energy, and there can (and should IMO) be problems associated with it when it drains Entropy (or any other sphere). John ===== Rule #53. Well, the Thyatians have surely more experience than the Traladaran Three in this kind of confrontation. Halav was never able to get much followers in Thyatis. Zirchev is the one who has most to gain from the merge, from this POV, but even his position could be threatened by Ilsundal. And Vanya cannot be perceived as anything else than a threat... one of her major hobbies is fighting Traladarans and assimilating other cultures into her follower's. Also, Halav is worshipped by the CoThyatis, but not by the CoK, which doesn't support the idea that he was interested in inviting other Immortals in Traladara. I don't think the Traladaran Three want an open conflict, they just want to take time, and bring Stefan on their side. Remember that Zirchev may have some contacts with the Alphatian Immortals, since he is a patron of Norwold. I think one of their goals during WotI could be to divide the CoK pantheon, isolating Vanya and causing a schism in the Church. Then, they could have had the CoT merge with the "moderate" wing of the CoK, leaving Vanya and whoever sided with her with only a minor church. Unluckily for them, the CoK held together despite Stefan's betrayal, so they would need a new strategy. > > > >From our own history, the opposite is more > > > >common. Especially if > Stefan has some connection with Halav as we already > agreed was likely IMO, from an in-game POV, it all depends on the post-Wrath goals of the Immortals of the CoK pantheon. I'd see Ilsundal getting closer to Kagyar and more distant from both Vanya and Asterius, due to the Shadow Elven threat to the north, with Valerias trying to keep the two groups together. Zirchev would get more followers from the Alphatian immigrants, and perhaps some native Alphatian Immortals could get a lesser role in the CoT pantheon, much like the lesser Heroes and the older Immortals (Tarsian Twelve). ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 14:19:55 -0600 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: ramhog Subject: Blackmoor Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Are there any maps of the city (or kingdom) of Blackmoor out there? There is more about it at starflung I'm sure, but I don't know where exactly. There are a few issues about getting back though. I knew how to find their store because i found the address in a white dwarf mag. the list also contains some independant stockists some of whom have email addresses or even web addresses. so i was wondering if i should post these. what do you guys think. I tend to support the "it's magical" explanation, but are we ever given any indication of Myoshima's orbit? Theoretically it could be in geosynchronous (Mystarasynchronous?) orbit so that it is always directly above the Black Peaks (I think that's where the Well is in X5), but there might be a reference somewhere regarding the second moon's orbit. If it were some sort of quasi-physical ladder, we'd have to assume that its location on Matera is constant as well, which would make give us some interesting information about Matera: like earth's moon, its days would be exactly equal to the time it takes to orbit (24 hours in Matera's case); Matera would have to be significantly closer to Mystara than Patera is (or than the moon is to earth); the side with the ladder would have a constant view of Mystara taking up most of its sky, so it would be roughly the same time of day on both sides of the ladder (most light on this side would likely be reflected from Mystara, since the MSun would be eclisped by Mystara most of the night); tides would be affected very peculiarly, although I have no idea how exactly. Then again, wasn't the Well of the Moon somehow linked to the visible moon?
