They refuse to take a life even if this is to save their own. They feel that they must show they path to peace for others by example. They also choose to abstain from having emotions as emotions can lead to violence. Even positive emotions can quickly turn to hatred or anger. Thus all emotions are voluntarily suppressed. In the absence of emotions only purity of thought and logic exists. Through logic one can achieve greatness and prosperity. By following emotions and practicing warfare, one is only inviting and encouraging death. Through this study of logic one obtains purity and control over one's mind. This control allows a person to explore the seldom-used portions of the mind. Most Linarii now through the years are telepaths and many have developed other pscionic powers. All Linarii have the ability to use Missive. Long ago the Linarii were once apart of the Calarii people. The Calarii started to emphasize individual combat prowess and the studying the art of warfare as a means to assure elven safety. The Calarii believed that they could purify the mind and body through this training. A group of scholars at this time however had a different opinion. These scholars felt that if elves cease all their violent tendencies, that only peace will come to the elves. Many Calarii did not appreciate this ideology as many elves valiantly gave their lives to vigorously defend the elves from genocide by the massive hordes of humanoids of the legendary past. Yet still the philosophy of peace and pacifism grew into a majority. The remaining warrior minded Calarii forcibly expelled the pacifists from their lands. They pacifist peacefully left to wander they forest in search of a new home. They renamed themselves, Linarii. As the Linarii voyaged outside of the Calarii lands, they were fiercely attacked by the denizens of Dymrak forest. Many Linarii refused to fight back, and were savagely killed. Seeing this, some chose to journey back to the Calarii in hopes of being welcomed back, while others chose to remain. Their voyage seemed over before it has begun. All seemed hopeless until one night they heard whisperings in the wind about an invitation to a hidden land called Haven. The Linarii followed those whisperings and they came upon Haven, and they have resided there ever since. The whisperings were of an immortal patron called Talishia by the elves. Talishia created the city and valley of Haven in hopes of creating a peaceful utopian society where all can prosper in peace and harmony. The Linarii are always Lawful good and sometimes Lawful neutral. They follow the way of order as do the Calarii and are respected contributing citizens of Haven. Many Linarii are amoral following the path of logic, which gives the appearance that the Linarii are cold hearted. Since the Linarii are devote pacifist, this gives them the appearance that they are good. In following the philosphy of logic, the Linarii have discovered pscionic abilities and are trained at an early age. All Linarii must be trained with class level 1 in either Pscion or Psychic Warrior. The Linarii can choose other classes and not suffer penalities from having level differences for either Pscion or Psychic Warrior. (see PHB: Experience for Multiclass Characters, page 56) The more scholarly personality will choose to a Pscion class and sometimes combine this with arcane arts. All Linarii are devote pacifists, but a few recognize the need for self-defense and have studied the old Calarii ways of war. These more agressive Linarii will have a class that uses combat skills, such as a Pschic Warrior, Fighter, or Monk. A popular role amongst these Linarii consists of a Monk/Psychic-Warrior combination. Statistics of Linarii Clan Clan Relations: The Linarii strive to maintain a neutral attitude towards all species, but they cannot help not admire Vyalias quest to protect life. The Linarii are given respect the the other clans, with exception being Calarii. The Calarii view the Linarii as a mistake that should never have existed or survived. The Dinarii are neutral as the Linarii are isolationists and seldom interact with humans. Alignment: As the Linarii follow a strict path of logic and peace, they are considered Lawful. The Linarii are devote pacifists and disdain using violence and thus are good. Linarii Lands: The Linarii live in a city known as Haven, which exists between reality and the DreamLand. Languages: The Linarii are able to converse in elven and can read/write elven script. Most Linarii perfer to speak amongst each other Telpathically (D&D3E: Missive). Favored Class: Pscion or Psychic Warrior ( see D&D3E Psionics Handbook) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! AFAIK the first mention of a second moon (Myoshima) was in VotPA Part 7, = from the August 1990 issue of Dragon Magazine. The sun appears to wobble back and = forth over a 3=BD day period. Nearside usually receives a small amount = of reflected light from Mystara. Full twilight is only as strong as = twilight on Mystara, the sky changes colour from fiery at noon to red = and purple hues at dusk or dawn, because of the light-reflecting shield = at the edges of its atmosphere. I am back. The evil Lycos Imperium has conquered the helpless Kingdom of Hotbot.com, and thus I have lost my email account. :-\ Before I was the infamous Darth Darknerd (darknerd@hotbot.com). Now I am back with this email address. Background (if anyone interested). I started D&D on the good old red box and got my friend hooked. In 8th grade, I even had a group of people, but no real dedicated gamers. I moved out to California, and in high-school ('89), I ran the Temple of Elemental evil and the Greyhawk setting. Though, the city Greyhawk is intriguing, the overall campagin IMHO is just boring. I missed Mystara and I was always fascinated by the Gazetteers, which essentially put Mystara on the map. I am saddened to see no future development for this campaign. I will contribute to this campaign with my own imagination, and also try to put some social-political mechanics in place and make the overall campaign interesting. I also wish to expand on already existing stuff, integrate cool material, and update things to D&D3e. All of my future contributions will be in D&D3e as I am leaving AD&D2 and OD&D in the tomes of past history... In addition to Mystara, I work on other projects to create a Sci-Fi d20, not based on Star Wars. I am interested in Star Frontiers, Dune, and maybe BattleStar Galatica. signed, Joaquin Menchaca __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hundreds of people could have died from the gas, and those who survived simply abandoned the town, leaving behind lots of interesting things. The original author obviously threw that in as a hook for future adventures, he mentioned that there was a kingdom on the moon. But he wasn't planning on developing this himself. This was before Bruce Heard or anyone else had even come up with the concept of a second invisible moon. The Known World was all that had been fleshed out, and X5 was expanding the Known World to the west. When the planet and the Hollow World and the two moons were all developed for the Mystara campaign, this old reference was forgotten. Which leaves each DM to reconcile it for his or her campaign. Since Matera doesn't have an atmosphere(on the outside at least), and the only area of note is an Immortal meeting site, it fits better to have the stairs lead to Patera, which has a breathable atmosphere and inhabitants. That is what I plan for my campaign. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 16:03:06 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Christopher Cherrington Subject: Re: Stairs of the Moon MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable -----Original Message----- From: Dave Keyser [mailto:dave@PALMCHIP.COM] Andr=E9s Piquer Otero wrote: > Well, maybe this reasoning is a bit silly, but module X5 says that = the > stairs manifest on the nights of the full moon... moon phase comes = from > visibility from Mystara, and Patera is completely invisible from the planet, > so I assumed that the Stairs took to Matera, which has regular = visible > phases. > > Andr=E9s This is true, but... Magic items seem to just fall out of the sky in some campaigns. In some older modules, villains awaiting to be hacked up by PCs with magical items were numerous. What happened to the fabled stories, where just one magic item became legendary, instead of a commonplace for every adventurer and their brother to have one. Doesn't anyone comtemplate where do these magic items come from? Some may wish to play in a campaign where magic items are commonplace. It that is the case, then read no further. If however, players would like to play in a campaign where magic items are more rare, and exist for a purpose, thus adding more realism, then here is a simple concept that can be used to help control magic items, or at least add colorful backgrounds. The idea is simple. For every magic item, I mean *every* magic item, even the lowliest knife +1, should have a background and story for its creation. The burden does fall upon the Dungeon Masters shoulders. The DM will have to paint a colorful story. The players will have to critique the DM for imagination. Hopefully, the DM will apply imagination and not limit a common story like The Wizards Guild made it. A simple knife +1 could have, for example, the Kuglor Clans mark (a dwarven clan), which resides in the tunnels under Hillsfollow. They guard their secretive ways for forging such wondrous works. The DM could even develop statistics for how much the clan can make in a given year and how much profit. This way an entrepreneurial player character could perhaps buy these weapons and resell them elsewhere for profit. Along the way, all kinds of adventures, ranging from bandits and brigands, competitors wanting to forcibly compete, black market racketeers that demand a percentage or the rights to buy below market, etc. A NPC could fulfill that role and hire the players as guards or as investigators to already committed crimes. In a war campaign, this could come into play. The PCs helping insurgent Traldaran freedom fighters negotiate a price to acquire these weapons secretly. The PCs working for the Duke could discover this transaction and attempt to blockade the dwarven merchants. Other forces, such as goblins could be equipped with superior weapons purchased by the Iron Ring. There are many possibilities for adventures, just from a simple knife +1. Everything should happen for a reason. If things such as this: contemplating where do magic items come from, are not considered, then players are robbed of realism, and the boundless possibilities for adventure. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The other elven clans only know of them through legends or rumors, but there has been no verification of their existence, for a member of a Selenii would never admit his allegiance. The Selenii live and reside within the magical forest densely populated by sylvan creatures such as unicorns, nymphs, pixies, brownies, dryads, and satyrs. They sometimes travel outside of their magical realm into the real world of reality. They only make this voyage under the disguise of another elven clan such as Calarii or Vyalia. Those not familiar with the local clan customs may pretend to be from some far away obscure clan. This way the true identity of the Selenii agent will be kept hidden. Beyond the dreams of men exist another reality. These dreams give the energy and bring life to another world. In turn the dreams of the denizens of this world give the energy to form reality, as we know it. These pseudo-world touches closely to the magical forests. Beyond the sea of dreams exist a world of substance in plane known as Arcadia. It is this world where the Selenii were born. It is this world that the Selenii will return. The Selenii often cross into this world through magical gateways sometimes referred to as faerie rings. The Selenii cross the dream realm into the prime material plane in order to complete their mission of infiltrating and combating the evils forces of unseelie faerie. The race of the Selenii clan is called the Akalians, which is similar to the High Elves in all aspects. The one exception is that the Akalians are able to see through the illusions, disguises and magic of faeries, sylvan, and other Arcadians. This ability is similar to the True Sight in regards to Arcadians, sylvan folk, and faeries. Other denizens of Arcadia share this ability and can thus see through the disguises and magic of a given Selenii. Originating from Arcadia, the Selenii can speak Akalian and can read and write the Akalian runic script. The Selenii will need to learn the native language of their target destination. On Mystara, a Selenii will need to learn to speak, read, and write Elvish. Additionally, the Selenii will have to learn at least one common tongue, such as Thyatian. Without learning the native language, the Selenii will jeopardize the mission. The Selenii will also need to pay extra attention to the appropriate pronunciation of a language to sound like a native speaker. The Akalian elves have a vast an rich magical system found within the great libraries of Akalia. The Akalian mages enscribe their magic in their own language. Scrolls are written in the magical runes, and are completely usable by Akalian, as Read Magic spell will translate the understanding of magic to the Akalian way of thinking. Spells written in spellbooks by other Elves of Mystara are written in Elven glyphs. Once Elven glyphs are understood, their magical spells can be incorporated into an Akalian's spellbook, provided that the Akalian is trained in the casting of that spell. The Calarii have a different set of spells that they call Battle Magic. These spells require training by the Calarii. Other spells by other mages will be written in their own perspective languages. These spells can be taught to an Akalian provided that the Akalian reads and understands the instructor's language, or the instructor reads and understands one of the Akalians's known languages. A Selenii typically is either an illusionist or an echanter, which they find useful for successful operations. The Selenii are somewhat difficult to understand in their behavior and thus it is difficult to define their personality. Within their homelands the Selenii follow very well defined organization and exhibit complete an utter devotion for their cause. They also abide the laws and rules of their civilization. This would lend towards a lawful alignment. However when the Akalians travel into other worlds, their behavior changes. They have no loyalty or interests in the affairs of other worlds, and the laws and social rules will be followed only as part as their grand masquerade to infiltrate other worlds. It is as if their whole new experience is one wild party and game. Their behavior becomes chaotic in this sense. They will strive to protect other Seelie faeries, elves, and sylvan folk as long as this does not interfere with their mission. When confronted with Unseelie forces of corruption, they may have to assassinate the Unseelie. Sometimes morality gets in the way of accomplishing one's mission and thus their alignment is typically neutral. However those that in their homeland, their behavior dramatically changes more towards the good side. Those that cannot shed their moralities are only sent of very limited missions. Clan Relations: The Selenii is somewhat of a mystery for the other clans. The Selenii are commonly disguised as another elven clan, and thus will receive penalties and bonuses for the clan imitated. Alignment: As Akalians, the selenii tend to be somewhat carefree and self-expressionistic, and generally lean towards chaotic behavior. They value life and nature, and seek to protect this, and thus tend more towards good. Selenii Lands: The Selenii exist in Akalia, a kingdom within Arcadia. They roam the Known World where nature is very strong. Karameikos, which is largely untamed and abundant with sylvan life, which is a popular area for the Selenii. Languages: The Selenii speak Akalian and write in Akalian runic script. The Selenii found on Mystara will speak and write the local elvish tongue and will be able to speak, read and write the local common tongue, such as Thyatian. Our own moon does not rotate, but it revolves around the Earth every 28 days. The same side always faces the Earth, even though the Earth is rotating. If the moon were rotating at a rate equal to its orbital revolution, than halfway through its orbit, the opposite side would be facing Earth. The same would be true for an invisible moon with a polar orbit on Mystara. Phases of the moon are caused by the moon's position in its revolution relative to the earth and the sun's light, not due to any rotation on its axis. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 22:56:36 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Patrick Sullivan Subject: Re: On Moons MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 >> Sure it does -- rotation period is also 3 days and 12 hours, otherwise >> it would not keep the same face towards Mystara at all times. >Actually, it was right the first time. David was right--the time necessary for rotation and revolution on both of Mystara's moons, as well as Earth's moon, are equal. This also necessitates a axial tilt of 90 degrees for Patera, giving it East and West Poles. That Luna's rotation and revolution times are equal are explained at http://www.hcrhs.hunterdon.k12.nj.us/science/rotrev.html . You can prove it to yourself by holding a compas (sp? the direction-finding kind, not the circle-drawing kind) flat in your hand and watching it as you turn a 180-degree circle. We can all agree that the needle doesn't rotate, so if it seems to move, the necessary explanation is that the casing around the needle, while remaining still in your eyes, rotated at the exact speed that you did. Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing ;-) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 09:34:20 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Jacob Skytte Subject: Re: On Moons MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable David Knott wrote: > From: "Jacob Skytte" > > > > AFAIK the first mention of a second moon (Myoshima) was in VotPA > > Part 7, from the August 1990 issue of Dragon Magazine. I don't know the astrophysics or even common geometry (or whatever it is?) involved, but I do know that the original article says "Myoshima does not have a rotation of its own". Are we dealing with different view points in astrophysicism or did Bruce just make a mistake? << Yup, Bruce made a mistake. You can either have it one of two ways (but not both). Take a couple of balls and make a mark on one of them (representing the moon). Now move the "moon" around the earth, but don't rotate it. The marked face would always be pointing at you, but not necessarily at the ball representing the Earth. In order to keep the marked side of the moon ball facing the earth ball, you must rotate the moon ball as you move it around the earth. 1) The moon doesn't rotate, but then its facing would change as it orbits Mystara. 2) The moon keeps the same face to Mystara at all times (as our own moon does), but its rotational period is the same as its orbital period (same as our own moon). I tend to think that what Bruce meant was the second option. John ===== Rule #53. If the beautiful princess that I capture says "I'll never marry you! Where is this information from? AFAIK both Halav and Zirchev are listed among worshipped immortals in Thyatis. OTOH, I definately think that Halav has a greater chance of gaining popularity among Thyatians in Karameikos than among Thyatians in Thyatis since he is considered a protector of the former country (Whether it is called Traladara or Karameikos). Vanya is the patroness of Conquest. But she isn't neccesarily associated with Thyatis. Especially after the events on WotI and the rise of the Heldannic Knights. She could be an inspiration to warriors from any country, even Traladarans. IMC she is the main patron of the Order of the Griffon; the fighting wing of the CoK. Zirchev and Ilsundal have similar interests, but that might as easily bring them together as separate them. Haavard ______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The "Whether it is called Traladara or Karameikos" part I can't take for granted. If Ilsundal starts stealing Zirchev's followers, I doubt Zirchev would be interested in cooperating. I think that the CoK was left open-ended purposefully so that GMs could integrate whatever god of their making. IMC, I created Mithras, which was a popular god during RW Roman Empire, Persia, and even India. This was a war and sun god. Many of the rituals and practices were later absorbed into Roman Catholicism. Thus with Mithras, I can use this as a tool introduce concepts like inquistors, witch hunters, monks, crusaders, and other fun things of Catholic colorful history. I place the CoK as somewhat intolerant of pagan Traldaran worshippers, and then in other regards, they are beneficial and generous to Traladarans. This is dependent on the priest, biases, prejudices, convictions, etc. Also, one could introduce poly-thesium, that Mithras is the one true god, above all pretenders (whom are just mere immortals aspiring to be gods) If Vanya was the god of CoK (or even a participating god), then CoK would be hell-bent on subjugating Traldarans and administering justices, aka witch-inquistor style, toward pagan worshippers. This would certainly cause a revolt. The current socio-political atmosphere is not like that. Thus there need to be check-balances, counter-measures in place to justify the existance of a intolerant-obey-or-be-crushed god like Vanya. --- Agathokles wrote: > Havard Faanes wrote: > > > > Where is this information from? I'm slowly working on some other projects simultaneously and put this one on the back burner for a while. Now that Joaquin let the cat out of the bag on me, so to speak, I figured I might as well post what I've done so far (with a little necessary editing). And keep in mind that this is still in kind of a rough format. Feedback is mandatory! SOL INVICTUS Mithraism in the Known World- 1000 AC by Pliny the Larger What is known today as Mithraism began in both Sind and Hule as a religion devoted to the Immortal Mitra. It was spread to the east via Sindhi spice merchants bringing goods to the area now known as Darokin (where it died out fairly early as a religion but exists in a fashion in the Darokinian ,q.v.) and to the Empire of Thyatis via sea trade where it still survives today as Mithraism. Mithraism was introduced to the Northern Reaches and Norwold during early Thyatian military campaigns there. There are still small groups of followers extant in Norwold today. Pilgrims spread the religion through the Khanates and Rockhome where it ultimately died out in the Ust-Urt valley of Ylari emirate of Makistan. There stands an all but forgotten temple dedicated to Mithras in the mountains west of the village of Warqa. As of 1000 AC Mithraism exists in Thyatis and Karameikos only as a "mystery religion" (that is, a religion whose origins are forgotten or not wholly understood). In Thyatis it is practiced primarily by the military, but is gaining popularity among the "lower classes" such as gladiators and slaves. Mithras is represented in Karameikos by the Church of Karameikos and is the primary religion there among those of Thyatian descent. Mithraism is a monotheistic religion in Thyatis and has it's share of detractors there in the form of cults devoted to Vanya, Thanatos, Diulanna, Halav, etc. The Emperor, a follower of Mithras, is for the moment rather tolerant of their presence in the Empire, but grows less so as some of those cults' members vie for political power. It probably won't be long before the Emperor bans or even outlaws some of the more ambitious cults (i.e. Vanya's). There is an offshoot of the Church of Karameikos in the form of the religious military Order of the Sacellum (see below), which has in it's origins the lost temple at Warqa, known to the locals there as the Temple-in-the-Mountain. The teachings of the Order do not exactly follow those of the Church and have lead to a certain amount of tension between the two. The main reason for this is that the Order has in it's possesion the legendary Shield of Altendorf (q.v.), a holy relic that protected the Temple for hundreds of years. It should only be a matter of time before some conflict breaks out between the Church of Karameikos, the Order, and high-ranking representatives of Mithras in Thyatis. Note: One faction of the Church of Karameikos (with the quiet support of the Duke) wants it to be dedicated solely to worship of Mithras, while the other holds to the Thyatian acceptance of all religions. Members of the clergy of the Church of Traladara often play to that tension by aligning themselves with Thyatian faction (as they are the ones more accepting of the Traladarans beliefs). On the other hand, the Order of the Sacellum has closer ties to Karameikan faction since they are in possesion of a genuine Mithraic artifact. VVH ps- Please let me finish this before it gets used anywhere (if it does), I still have some important parts to complete (in particular the Order of the Sacellum) and I'm sure I still need to get some of my facts and history straight (I don't have DotE). The key phrase here is "of its own" -- that moon is tidally locked with Mystara and thus has a rotation period equal to its period of revolution around Mystara. Then again, whoever drew up the lunar cycles for the Trail Maps did indeed make some astronomical errors (which can be covered only by the assumption of some weird magic optical effects) such as having it possible for a full moon to rise shortly before dawn. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 22:35:56 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Dan Eustace Subject: Re: On Moons MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Well, you learn something new every day... I worked on the religious precepts and litany of Mithras. However your history adds to a deep thought into history. I like the splinter religious groups. It is shows transition to new religion, splinter "official" faction; some similarities to mithras transition to christ and othrodox vs vatican vs ? (mormons? :) but yet has unique uncanny backgrounds, much like other creative stuff in Mystara that mirrors real world in the end result, but definately have different totally unique background. The only major difference in my campaign is that I have the Church of Karameikos supporting ONLY Mithras. However there are multiple factions in the church. There are those that think Traldaran's are pagans and that the Duke should impose a state religion: Mithras and persecute others. They want harsh measures towards Pagan worshippers and feel that Traldaran need to be "shepard" for their own benefit (aka enslaved legally). The other side is more tolerant and believes benevolent deeds shall win over the hearts of Traldarans. Another group feels that there is a growing evil in the land (rightfully so too) and that people are being possessed by the demons working for the devil (Azeonteotl or Bodgzon temple of death dude :) The Traldarans need to be saved from themselves and the suspected evil must be smited (can you say inquistition, witch hunt, etc.) There will be actual demons. There will be innocent Traldarans convicted by predjudice or power abush, and Thyatian conspirators that go undetected due to political intrigue. A chaotic mess, to destroy Karameikos from within leaving it ripe for the Desert Nomads in the far future... ^_^ --- ramhog wrote: > Here's a little something I was working on for the > list off-and-on > for the last two months or so. Are for example, the 600,000 and 500,000 numbers for Thyatis City and Sundsvall respectively the "non-trade" (non-summer) numbers or are they the summer populations? Regardless of which population type ,has anyone incorporated population fluctuations through the seasons as has been done for FR? Or if not, maybe Mystaran cities do not "swell" in population during the summmertime as for FR cities for some strange reason? Or maybe the Mystaran designers did not think about this? Any thoughts? Whatever the case, a 4x to 10x increase in size seems ridiculous. Where exactly are all these traders coming from? If Calimport suddenly acquires 1,800,000 middle-class residents, does that mean that nine other cities of comparable size are *deserted* in the summer? Or do all these traders have "winter homes" out in the countryside? It seems unlikely that farmers would move into the city during the summer, since that is growing season and there is work to do at home. I'll go out on a limb and speculate that this is a piece of Realms fantasy; on the surface it looks like a detail that makes the Realms more realistic, but it doesn't really make much sense. Now if this swelled population is just farmers arriving in the morning, selling goods, and then going home in the evening, that might be reasonable. Still, an increase of 1,800,000 people would mean that 2,500 farmers per *minute* go through the city gates, 24 hours a day, seven days a week; since they're trading, each one will also have a horse and a cart, so add another 2,500 horse carts. Even worse, there is only one resident for every 9 farmers, so are we to believe that each resident buys nine cartloads of produce daily? Must be pretty fat residents. Maybe the merchants sell to each other? If so, who is buying? They can't go to Waterdeep, it has its own surplus problems. In any case, that seems to be stretching the definition of "population". The town of Necanicum Junction, Oregon, probably has a popularion of 5, but on weekends thousands of people drive through on their way to the beach, and at any given time maybe ten visitors stop to buy gas or snacks or use the restroom. That doesn't mean that the population swells to 15 on weekends. I can accept a reasonable increase, perhaps 10% or so. For a city in a nomadic region, or at a crossroads (Ylaruam?), huge increases may be possible. But these would be exceptions, and most cities would remain fairly constant, and many more would shrink in population. All those traders have to come from somewhere. Overall I don't think it was an oversight of Mystara designers, I think it is a mistake in the Realms. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Figures for Threshold in the Expert Set (and perhaps in the gaz too, I don't remember right now) included a 10% of "visiting" residents (mostly trappers and woodsmen), but this isn't a seasonal fluctuation, just an average. And Ierendi's gaz gives two figures, but that's due to the touristic season. IMO, considering the population of the KW, there should be some reason different than trade to bring to a significant population increase of one of the major cities. Specularum and Thyatis hold much of their countries' population, so allowing them to have a huge growth during summer would simply depopulate the countryside. You could have the extra people come from other towns/cities, or from the countryside. The latter case doesn't justify a FR-like increment, as Mike said. The former would mean that only a very small part of the population moves (unless you want to have mass migrations from Darokin to Thyatis, f.e.). Also, those who leave compensate for the foreign merchants who arrive to each town, so the total population wouldn't change much, I suppose. -- Giampaolo Agosta agathokles@libero.it agosta@elet.polimi.it http://digilander.iol.it/agathokles ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 10:17:24 -0000 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Angelo Bertolli Subject: Ice Queen - cheat utilities Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed I put up the icequeen utilities which may allow you to modify the game to a certain extent and make it your own (if you have alot of time). Has any body expanded on these concepts for other countries? I started a list of ports of call with Alphatian cities and their port/city class and products; but this was before it sank beneath the waters. Ochalea with its chief immortal would be another important trading nation by sea. The Ylari are supposed to be second only to Minrothad on the seas, and by land they do heavy trading with Darokin. With the introduction of the Savage Coast as being a large Ispan population with colonies, they would be a major sea trading empire also. Has anyone come up with a merchants almanac? This would list every major city with trading info, best markets, best inns, where to find a foreign temple, short list of customs to deal better bargains with, and possibly who's who on what you want to trade with (who can be bribed, who can smuggle anything, who is the best fence, who can help with information on competitors and such, what thieves or guilds to watch out for, et.) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 09:50:43 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Geoff Gander Subject: Re: Trading & Merchants Christopher wrote: Actually, the Economica section of the Mystaran Almanac covers much of the relevant trading info for the Savage Coast, Isle of Dawn, Hule, the Midlands, and Alphatia (plus Bellissaria, too, IIRC). I realized the other day that I had plowed ahead through this without even considering the Order of the Griffon, but I suppose they can co-exist. There is (or was) a monastic order as well near Warqa- the Brotherhood of the Temple-In-The-Mountain. How that figures into the big picture, I don't as yet know. Keep in mind, this is all still in it's "raw" form. That's interesting that you would go that direction (the inquisition angle). I'm going to play up the RW tolerance that Mithraism exhibited in Rome, at least where Thyatis is concerned. I was going to avoid the more draconian actions of the RW Catholic church- this all started because I want the judeo-christian god in my game- the trick is to be non-offensive to the Christian gamers and non-threatening to the non-Christian (and probably "pagan" gamers). There will, no doubt, be blood shed in his name, but not because of the persecution of others. The "Satan" of my campaign will be Orcus- partly because he just has that look and partly because Orcus was a (the?) god of death in RW Rome. The stuff covering Orcus is still very sketchy, so I left it out of the post. I have always liked the merchant idea for Mystara, maybe we can gather enough info to start a Fodor's Guide to Mystara. It can include major trade routes with a wandering monster list appropriate to the areas, and even new merchant prestige classes for 3ed. IMC I introduced 'Cask and Barrel' inns, a sort of chain operation that has Inns from Selinica to Akkoros, and 2 very magical versions in Glantri City and Crowngaurd (Crowngaurd being the original Cask and Barrel) They also plan on opening more Inns in other major cities around the KW. This almanac could also be beneficial to other classes like bards and traveling clerics besides the rogues and merchants. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 09:27:52 -0600 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: ramhog Subject: Re: Mithraism [long] (was: Re: [MYSTARA] Church of Karameikos Summary) In-Reply-To: <3B479170@webmail.nau.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Thanks a lot! Well, most of them, at least. Well, the level of Immortal activity in my campaign is quite high, also because one of the PCs is a Magus of Usamigaras, and Usamigaras's followers are so few that he can afford knowing each of them personally (at least, those in the KW, I'm planning something involving him in a yet-to-be located MEtruria). And the Cynidicean Hin is brewing a plan to expand his following at the expense of the Elven Immortals, so he takes quite a direct interest in his only elven follower (the older PC). ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 19:52:55 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Dan Eustace Subject: Re: heldanners and the milenian empire MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Look on the inside cover. IMC I made silver the main denomination, and made the coins smaller. This system was developed from an old Dragon article (I don't know from what year or issue) Basically the coins are measured in pennyweights, 4 pw equals a coin, 20 pw equals a cn (cn being the encumbrance of 10cn=1 pound) This changes the perspective to a more realistic approach to buying things. The old system was basically if you wanted to buy a suit of plate armor, you had to use a wheelbarrow to lug 50 pounds of gold to the armorer (plate mail being at 500 gp). Nice chance to get to the market without an escort. The new system would mean you can purchase the armor with 10 pounds of silver, or if you exchange silver into gold at 1sp=20gp, you can go to market with 25gp or 8oz of gold. This system also makes gold and platinum extremely scarce, and for price conversions I added a bronze piece. IMC money follows this: 10cp=1bp, 10bp=1sp, 20sp=1gp, 10gp=1pp; 1pp=10gp=200sp=2000bp=20000cp. When buying items from standard lists just use cp as cp, bp as sp, and sp as gp. Of course I changed some other things IMC, some countries don't follow the standard rule that a coin weighs in at 4pw. Some countries (like the Shires) add an extra pw to some coins and take away from others. This can be a nightmare to inexperienced DM's, but also can be used to show why major countries like Thyatis add mills to their gp (the mills prevent shaving a pw's worth of gold from their 20pw Emperor). This could all be added in to randomly decrease the parties actual treasure earned. "Wow, 20gp!" of course they have all been shaved and are only worth 15gp. ;) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 10:11:27 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Geoff Gander Subject: Re: Trading & Merchants Chris wrote: >I have always liked the merchant idea for Mystara, maybe we can gather >enough info to start a Fodor's Guide to Mystara. This almanac could also be beneficial to other >classes like bards and traveling clerics besides the rogues and merchants. This sounds a lot like something I have IMC. One of my players (who has since returned to Finland - he was working in Canada for a year on a job placement with Nokia) told me about a chain of taverns/pubs that existed in his old campaign - the Hammer and Shield. I quite like the idea of a "McDonalds of Mystara" (no matter where you go, there's always a Hammer and Shield if you look hard enough, and you know you'll always get that same, courteous service and lovely cuisine - yeah, right), so I added it to my campaign as well, though I never play it to the hilt (ie: there isn't one in every city, but there are a few in the more civilised nations). It was tongue in cheek and the players liked it for a change of pace. Other notable pubs IMC include: the Whispering Poplars (north end of Darokin City, good quality, potted plants and small magical fountain in the common room, small courtyard with large oaks in the back lot, higher than average prices, but the food is good, and the cook will prepare any exotic meats you bring in - ie: dragon, griffon, etc. - in addition to regular fare). The Silver Bucket (known colloquially as the Donkey's Ass, don't ask, because one of my players started calling it that and the name stuck), located down on the docks of Darokin City, on the east side, cheap, crappy food (roaches are extra protein in your food), the building will likely burn down or collapse sometime this year, though if the owner was offered insurance she would accelerate the process. This is the other end of the Path to Freedom (see below). The Wayfarer Inn (technically a decent inn/tavern on the unfashionable West End of Darokin City, but also a safehouse for thieves and one end of the gnome-run "Path to Freedom" - a pedal-powered submarine that crosses the Streel and brings anyone who can afford the price into Darokin City proper, since the bridges are closed at night, and no one can pass the guards - well, alive, anyway). The Ungrateful Dog (avoid, avoid, avoid), located in the West End of Darokin City, just northwest of the warehouses and docks, this dilapidated brick structure *should* have been razed years ago, but is held together through determination and sheer bloody-mindedness. This is one of the places where you go to hire assassins, thieves, and contact the thieves' guild. "Accommodations" are rows of wobbly bunk beds in the attic (watch your stuff, but a bargain at 1 cp/two nights), food consists of whatever was leftover from the previous night, boiled mercilessly until it's a thick, pasty stew (1 cp per heaping bowl). The owner's main income comes from the fights that happen here regularly, he controls the betting. The Lucky Strike (West End of Darokin City, due west of the warehouses and docks) looks like it's falling apart from the outside, but inside it's well maintained and clean, because this is where some of the most lucrative gambling in the area goes on. The lower floor consists of regular card tables and a bar, while the upper floor is made up of guest rooms (very nice, 40 gp/night, "personal attendant" optional at 50-250 gp per day, depending on what is wanted, room service with the finest meals, made to guests' specifications - minimum 30 gp per plate), and the special gambling area. My players don't see a problem with it yet, and we do have that age-old item a party is not supposed to have - a bag of holding. Fortunately, my players aren't silly about it (ie: stuffing chairs and the like into it - they literally use it only as a glorified piggy bank/safe. My players have accumulated a fair degree of wealth (but I'm not an overly generous DM by any means: there are some party members - this group is 5th level on average - who have no magic weapons or armour). They get excited when I toss in a magic ring or a potion or two, and some of them have red steel weapons (they rolled a Hulean war party, but that's another story). But anyhow, some of them carry their wealth in the form of gems, and then convert them into coinage when necessary (losing a percentage in the form of a service fee/commission for the conversion - heh heh heh). A couple of others prefer to carry platinum coins, and then wave them at the merchant (often giving them 10-20% "tips" when buying things, but the playes don't seem to care, we'll see what they think once local thieves begin to notice these wealthy travellers throwing around money like it was going out of style). While in Darokin City one of my players seemed to like the idea of those "certified letters of credit" mentioned in the Gaz (Wow! Paper money - sort of!) - but I've used promissory notes in the past, as well, and I think they work very well. WIth the latter, you need to find someone who will accept them as currency (usually a big trading post or merchant house office), and even so, a small percentage is taken as a service free for converting it into cash. I use the national currency system as stated in the GAZ system. I also keep weapons and armor at the listed prices. Take Karameikos for example, the currency is 1 Royal (gold coin) = 10 Crona (silver) = 100 Kopecs (copper coin). The normal cost of living is about 1 Royal per week in Specularum. Weapon, armor, and transportation costs are as listed in Royals, most other expenses, equipment, and services are in Crona. Weapons and Armor are EXPENSIVE! A good sword should cost you about 4 months worth of living expenses. I also rate treasure in terms of Cronas. Finding Royals is rare. No reputable merchant would carry such a large quantity with them. They would have a letter of credit, showing how much money they have declared to a neutral third party (a notary or lawyer) who then draws up a paper for them. Then a contract is negotiated and the money is sent in an armed shipment. For small purchases a merchant will have a squad of armed men visible (and perhaps a pavement artist or two on hand to watch for pickpockets and the like) and a strong-man will carry the currency for the merchant. The average adventurer carrying 2gp walks into a bar for a drink, ale at 1cp. He pays in 1gp, and gets 9sp and 9cp back in change (he's to cheap to tip). The adventurer is now encumbered by almost 2 pounds of coin. For instance, in 3E 50 coins weight a pound instead of 10 coins per pound as in OD&D. I've found that reducing weight to 1/5 in that manner has worked out quite nicely, and I appreciate not having to change prices in any books, nor the numbers or types of coins in any treasure hoards (although I do so anyway in many cases for other reasons). If you wanted, you could have very small coins that weight 100 to a pound. I RW history there has been a great variety of coin sizes and weights, and some rather tiny. With 50 coins to a pound, your adventurer who gets back 9sp and 9cp would end up with 5.76 ounces (.36 lbs). --Magus Coeruleus At 08:34 AM 5/11/01, Christopher Cherrington wrote: >The merchant would still carry a little coin on his person, but I was only >using a merchant as an example. Just treat the OD&D cn measure as .1 lbs (since it is 10 coins to the pound). You don't have to change the weight of equipment just because you change the weight of coins. But it does help to stop measuring encumbrance in cn. So if your coins now weight 50 to a pound, then 100gp = 2 lbs, but a piece of equipment that used to weigh 25 cn still weighs 2.5 lbs, not .5 lbs. Then you don't need to change how much someone can carry. The only problem is if you don't like the idea that characters can now carry more coins with less encumbrance (even though everything else weighs the same as before). If this is a problem, then just give them more lower-denomination coins that amount to the same treasure value. Despite what is written on the page, though, 1015 is actually in version 1.2, not 1.0. Note that sometimes there is an erratum to download. For 1017 the erratum has not been released yet. I should really release that erratum. You are only slightly wrong. ;-) There are two regions that are important. The Haze and Cursed Lands. The Cursed Lands are the areas one can contract the Red Curse. These lands are all entirely withing the Haze. The Haze extends far beyond, into Hule, the City States and over to portions the Arm of the Immortals. Cursed characters in the Haze don't lose their Legacies. Once they exit the Haze though, they will. Just being in the Haze, doesn't give someone Legacies or any part of the Curse, you still need to enter lands affected by the Red Curs for that. It is far from detailed and would require sketching out, but I tought I would post it anyway. ( Is this to big to post here ? ) Overview : This assume the players are traveling near Alphatian Neatharum. There they are approached by a party of Neathar wanting their help to rescue their brethen who were taken prisoners by Azcans. The player follow the trails back to Azcan territory. There the player will overtake the Azcans who are resting at a small town before continuing to the city of Atacantli. The player will be able to rescue the Neathar. Introduction : During their travels the PCs meet with a party of Daltrai Neathar ( 4 hunters with slings, clubs and staves ). The Daltrai are a small tribe of Neathar living north of the Alphatian Neatharum. They are similar in culture to the Balarai tribe. They walk barefoot and wear loose leather clothing. Their traditional weapons are the sling, quaterstaff and club. Their few villages are near the end of the Nogai river. These will aproach the player's asking for help. Azcan warriors have captured some of their villagers. They were looking to find Nogai to help them, but so far they have not located any ( reason : they have been assimilated by the Alphatians ). They claim to have found a magical horn on some Beastman war party many nights ago which is stored at a secret location. If the PCs can bring back the captives to the ending of the Nogai river they will bring them the horn. They say that the Azcans attackers attacked a small outpost near their village looking for sacrifice victims for Atzanteolt. 23 Neathar were taken prisoner including their village cleric. If the PCs accept they will be taken to the start of a trail the Azcans used to get back to Azca with the prisoners. The Neathar say they have to protect their remaining tribesmen. Towards the jungle : The PCs will now have to take the trail through hills until they reach the forest of the gentle folks. In the hills they will encounter a group of Hyenodons, place one Hyenodons for each party members and NPC's. If the group is been badly damaged and things look bleak for them, they will retreat. Another encounter will be with a group of 6 Nogai Neathar refugess who will be scared of the PCs of they are not of Neathar or elven descent. These have recently fled Alphatian Neatharum where they have received poor treatment from Alphatian. There are 3 men, 1 adult woman and 2 young woman. Later the player's will encounter a lone Triceratop who will pose no threat and continue on it's way unless provoked. Lands of the Gentle Folk : As the PCs approach the forest of the gentle folk, have a Tyranosaur attack and kill a triceratop. This will let smart PCs flee the scene ( not as smart PCs will have a run for their money with the T-rex ). Even tough the T-rex will follow in pursuit of the party after a short while. As the player are running they will encounter the gentle folk valley. Make it so that the player can reach the valley before the T-rex reaches them. When the PCs approach the gentle folk valley they can see the mighty oak and see a clear change in terrain. They also spot 4 markers, each about 250 feet from each other with the signs or Alphatia and Koryis on them. If they search for more they will not see any. At about 500 feet from the signpost the T-rex will slow down a lot. It will not come closer than 200 feet from the sign posts or the "invisible line" made by all the signposts. The players will be safe in the valley of the gentle folk. As they begin to enter the forest of the gentle folk they will come across Tunnviel, an old passive Gentle Folk who has been lured by Somnastis. The PCs will probably think the elf is under attack and try to rescue him. But unfortuntly the elf is currently under the effect of the plant and very far out. Tunnviel, AL TN, 0 level elf, HP 5, Tunnviel is looking like a 30 something year old human. He is a perfect exemple of his race. The plant has currently enthralled Tunnviel and as the PCs arrive he will begin to enter the plant in an hypnotic state. If the PCs rescue him Tunnviel, under the effect of the plant, won't have noticed. Later about an hour's march they will find a Gentle Folk village ( Laslanionel ) of about 150 persons. Here the players could meet Drianna from the p.44 of the HW DM source book. This village is a chance of the PCs to experience the Gentle Folk culture. The next day the players will meet a treant during their travel. This treant is pretty bored with the elves around here. He call's himself Green Sap. In fact, because it's been many, many cycles since he last had any sort of conversation, he will be very interested in any news the player's can bring of the Neathar forests. Particularly the forest outside this valley, he claims to have visited those lands once, but is now to busy. Green Sap will ask the help of the PCs. He will offer them a minor quest. It seems that an Acteon living in the forest and guarding it from outside creatures has caught a strange sickness. It all began when some wounded Neathar came here after being wounded in battle with a large reptile. He was nursed back to health and then left, but during his stay, Giltheniel, the acteon fell sick with a strange wasting disease. Giltheniel is now to weak to continue his duty. The treant has tried recruiting elves to help him but with no luck. The treant wants the player to find anyway to cure the disease, he's ready to offer them some magical potions of his own concotion if they succeed. He says he knows that the Neathar and Azcans shamans and clerics sometimes have access to magics to cure such things. He gives to acteon only a month or two to live ( meaning the PCs aren't in that much of a hurry with this ). The treant will show them the way to the acteon if they have some means to heal him or return with those means. The player can either cure the Acteon themselves with the Cure Disease spell. Head back in Neathar lands and find someone who can and convince him to take the trip and cure him or as we will later see they will have the opportunity to get their hands on a Scroll of cure disease during their trip into Azcans territory. The treant will give each party member a small bottle-like bark container containing a slightly yellow-green liquid. If asked, Green Sap will say this will boost the character's lifeforce. Characters drinking a potion will feel invigorated, will be healed for 1d4 hp, will have had the effect of a meal and will not be hungry again for 48 hours and finally will be 1 year younger ( altough their physical appearance will not change, this will just increase their life span by one year, but will still count as if the drinker was one year younger ). Later the player will come to another Gentle Folks village ( Vilveardnas ) of about 200 souls. This village is a typical Gentle Folk village. In the village The rest of the trip will be uneventful. Azcan territory As the players approach Azcan territory the land will become more and more of a south american jungle. Be sure to emphasize that the jungle is hot, sweaty and disease ridden. Often tell the player they are bitten by large mosquitoes, large flies drone about them, they see a large ( but still normal sized ) tarentualy spider ( which will not attack them, this is just like earth's spiders ). Also remember that it rains very often in Azca. After about 30 minutes inside the jungle tell the player they often hear sounds in the upper branches of the jungle. They also feel like they are being watched. Keep this up for a few minutes. After which 3 Flying Viper which are waiting for them will spit poison once and then flee all in different directions, as fast as they can hidden by the dense foliage of the upper branches of the jungle trees. Try to make it so that the player's cannot attack or pursue successfully the vipers. Repeat this process 2 or 3 other times or even more if you wish. Don't be afraid to jinx the die rolls a bit to make sure that at least 1vipers hits a character ( you can make it target the least armored PCs and jinx it's roll ) so the character will feel bothered by the vipers. After a bit the Vipers will make another such attack and then dive into combat on the PCs. This should only be a minor fight for the PCs. As the player's continue to walk in the jungle have them come across a well traveled trail. On it they find a sling similar to the ones carried by the Daltrai Neathar, they also find a leather bandana which fits in style Neathar clothing and not Azcan clothing and some old dried blood on the ground. This is because the prisonners have been lead by their Azcan's captors along this trail. Someone had hidden a sling and tried to attack his captors but was quickly beaten back the Azcans. This is a sign that the Neathar may have continued this way. You could also put some other encounters with great cats or plant monsters like archer bush along the way. Eventually the player will approach Atacantli. As the player approach they will be in what could be called the "suburbs" of Atacantli. Several farms and small stone buildings will be present. In the distance, the PCs can see the Pyramids of Atacantli. If the players are not careful they will be found and have to face several Azcans guards ( use standard Azcans from Atlass ), at least 12, while commeners flee into their homes and scouts race back to the city to get more armed forces. A direct attack against the city should be impossible. The PCs should have to use stealth to infiltrate the city. In my group one player is from the Atruaghin Plateau, another has a hat of disguise, the mage can cast invisibility and finally the thief has hide in shadows and move silently. Altough you can make for a few combat encounters, the PCs should have to infiltrate the city. From commoners they can learn that captives were sent in a small stone building which serves as a prison. The building is near another small stone building which is actually a guard barrack. The PCs couls also learn this from spying on guards, snooping around and finding the small prison or any other means. The captives are supposed to be executed in 2 days at the main pyramid in Atacantli during a ceremony to Atzanteolt. The trouble will be coming back with the group of Neathar once they are freed, espacially since the player's can't use the cover of the night to escape. Here are some descriptions of some of the buildings ( my version features a small map it didnt include it because I was told only to send plain text ). NOTE : There are always 4 standard azcans guards patrolling the village, 4 more can come out of the barrack and the prison guard can also assist if trouble arise. There are always 1d20 villages going about their daily busineses. 1- This is a barrack which contains 4-5 azcans guards ( 1-2 will be sleeping ), 9-10 more are on pratrol at various locations and will report here from time to time. It also contains 14 bunk beds, each with a chest containing various possessions. There are 3 rooms, dormitary, main area and a small closent which currently hold 10 clubs, 10 spears and 4 wooden medium shields and 2 horns. The horns are meant to be caried by patrol which sound them when needing reinforcement. Each patrol has 50% of having a horn. When blown, half of the guards in the village will leave towards the area the horn sounded. This is a good diversion. 2- Prison. This is a one story building with no windows guarded by a single guard fitted in leather armo, armed with a shield and a spear. The door is locked from the outside by a heavy log. There is no proper "lock" mechanism. Just a log that holds the door barred. The Neathar prisoners are inside this building. 3- This is an apothecary office where a local wise-man resides. He has a small laboratory where he has herbs, oils, potions and charms. The only useful items here are 2 magical potions, 1 of cure disease and 1 of cure poison. The apothecary is a 5th level mage armed with a quaterstaff. He has 16 hp and the following spells memorized : burning hands x 2, sleep, invisibility, web, blink. 4- This is a storage barn where the city officials store grain, tools and other things. A ladder leads to the roof of the storage where an alarm gong with a hammer calls in reinforcement. The players could possibly use this, but since the gong is only 100 yards away from the prison, it wouldn't make to much of a diversion. But who knows, it could prove useful. 5- This is a normal farm inhabited by a typical azcan family. 6- This is another azcan farm. 7- This is a field of maize. 8- This is a residential area where more farms and fields are present. When the PCs escape with the neathar prisoners they should face some jungle random encounters where they have to protect the neathar. If the players have a potion they can bring it to the treant, or else when the neathar are back in their village, their local cleric can come and heal the acteon for the PCs. When the player return the Neathar, the villagers will give them the promised horn, a horn that when blown produce the effect of an aid spell on the horn blower for a duration of 10 rounds. This power can be used once per day. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 23:25:38 +0200 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Agathokles Subject: Re: Savage Coast MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Bob Dylan wrote: > > Then poeple from the Cursed lands almost never leave the haze ? I'd be interested to know where people have placed their GCoT, or even if you've never specified, where you think it ought to go. Or, if someone has the Kingdom of Adventure boxed set and that product specifies, I'd like to know where they placed it. I was first thinking of having it be in the same section as the Great Church of Karameikos and the Hall of the Order of the Griffon, but then I thought that they probably wouldn't be that close. If enough people want the stuff listed (in other words, if the entire wad of items can be sold in one shot), he'll let it go for %40 off the prices listed below. I had the dealer hold all this stuff back (I packed it in the boxes, myself), so none of it's going anywhere. So what I need is for anyone *seriously* interested in buying any of this stuff to email me personally with your want lists. First come, first served. I'll email everyone back with the items that are left available to them. US/Canada only and only money orders in US funds, please. Also, figure no more than three bucks tops for S&H (I can ship whichever way you like). I'd like to hear from everyone interested by next Tuesday the 15th, at the latest as he isn't interested in holding the stuff back for very long (and, frankly, I'd rather not drag it out, myself). In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii IMC: They are an important part. Mostly, I have a system where the Immortals draw energy, i.e. primal energy, by the number of worshippers. The priests take away that primal energy, thus they need to do a good job in order to get spells, or they will not get spells. Being a good priest (or evil as the case may be) is simply not good enough. The priests themselves in this manner are not numerous, but are however powerful. To be a priest with spells means to be in favor of a god. Thus a priest MUST do something each adventure to further the immortal's cause, or be faced with no spells for the next adventure. Now. A holy favored priest carries a lot of power and influence. Armies can be moved and gathered, followers can flock, and lords can be convinced. Thus with the realism of the philosphy "don't get something for nothing", I think this works. This allows immortals to interface with the campaign, but on a budget with its primal energy. Naturally if there is a contest between gods, they can go into deficit spending "primal cold war?!?" to eventually oust the other worshippers. Finally, they can send come down themselves, use servants (devas, angels) or sending a clone of themselves (avatar) to meddle in the lives of humans, but this is not all too common. ciao, Joaquin --- Joe Kelly wrote: > Are the immortals a HUGE part of the Mystara > campaign? The Church of Karameikos is only of Mithras, as there would be too many pulling influences. The Order of the Griffen is united under Mithras and commanded by the Bishop. This adds a complex political structure between church vs duke/king vs nobility (barons and traldaran nobles). Also through into the mix are traldarans, monsters, criminal syndicates, and baron ludwig. Anyhow, the inquisitions are a friendly sort of thing. They have real powers to detect evil and must root out evil. this is the Inquisator prestige class. they are also resistant to mind controlling and possession powers. However there are pretenders, that are not of the Inquisator prestige class that can disrupt the fragile politics. It's very complex situation. There are factions in the church: tolerance and benevolence vs intolerance and paranoia. However, if you arbitarily set the church's mode to be tolerance, then there is no conflict. Without conflict there is no adventure. Without adventure, there is no game. :-) IMC, I allow the PCs to make changes and influence the church's direction. As they become more and more popular, they become recognized by nobility and also the Tralarans whom idol heroes. By rooting out evil, they can gain favor of the church. If a PC is Traldaran and helps the church, the church respects Traldarans, etc. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! It is full of interesting information on this culture and very well detailed. One of my player in the group I DM is an Atruaghin and I always manage to send my Mystara groups there. I like that Mystara has deep rich cultures, instead of the same standard medieval kingdom next to the other standard medieval kingdom. This is why I like Atruaghin, Ethangar Khannates and Ylaruam GAZs so much. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 17:00:42 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Bill Manley Subject: Re: The Northern Reaches Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed hey! how are you doing? It basically stated that he kept moving, travelling from one area to another. Based on that, I would guess that most of those who sail among the Savage Baronies are one of two types. Those who avoid the Red Curse altogether by constantly moving and avoiding contamination by not staying in one area too long. The others who have legacies, make sure to touch base with areas immersed in the Haze on a regular basis during their sea voyages. You are correct, it would not be safe to have sailors collapsing and firing off potentially destructive legacies on a wooden vessel in the middle of the sea. I am sure after a few mishaps, the local natives would learn how to avoid this. This also provides PCs with a way to avoid becoming contaminated, while still adventuring along the Savage Coast. Now I think this would only apply along the Savage Baronies, who are known for their seamanship and have much experience with the Red Curse. From what I can recall, the rest of the Savage Coast do not have significant navies, and they have only suffered from the Red Curse(over a wide area) since 1010 AC. They may still be learning the hard way. This makes a consistant map. :-) I have the Viper Clan which makes sacrifices. They raid other nearby clans. This clan is allied with Sutek, the Destroyer (also known as Set). There is a rough alliance with the LizardFolk of Malpheggi swamp (also allied with Sutek). Recently a Lizardfolk vampire king has awoken and is reigning terror amongst local Darokin towns. One hero has had visions of upcoming doom for his tribe. He saw his best friends controlled like zombies attack him. When they were killed, this scarab-like beetle jumped off their necks and tried to attack him. We awoke from the nightmare, and saught out advice from the shaman. In the fires he saw other visions of far away places. There he knew he must begin his journey across the lands and seek out this evil and destroy it. The spirits have granted him the power to detect undead. --- Bob Dylan wrote: [snip] he Republic of Darokin, but that one's not on > the list. Anyone interested should take a peek there. The system is very close to the British idea. As if the britons ever had a monetary "system" - no offence intended, but read the Adventures of David Balfour (Stevenson) to get some idea of the RW complexity. The basic idea is that a pound () of silver IS a poundweight in silver. (OK, to you who live in the sphere of influence of the historical British dominion this is a given fact, but bear with us from the periphery.) This of course will vary between merchants and their measuring weights and especially the purity of silver in different realms. As in RW, 240 pennies is a pound, and a pound has 20 shillings. However, only 1 penny coins are available, plus some very rare gold pound coins (which are valued at about 240-250 depending who minted them, where and when. This will mean that the PC's learn to carry coins from different realms to avoid trouble with exchanging currency - I think it makes money a much more interesting and "alive" concept. (Note: You can have some realms where instead of minted silver people use silver bars from which small pieces are cut) One might think that carrying hundreds, even thousands of penny coins would be cumbersome. We tried it out and gathered 240 Finnish coins that weigh the equivalent of 1/240 of a pound. 1 was surprisingly light. And of course you can use letters of credit for larger amounts, as already was suggested. NOTE: A good idea here is to vary the value of the letter by the status of the merchant who wrote it. In our good old D&D campaign I never got to change the system of coinage, as in my teens I already caused a serious inflation by using commercial adventures without alterations. The silly role of money never bothers us SO much, but yes, it would have been a lot nicer if had given money some serious thought 10 years ago. I did one for Rockhome and another for Ierendi which I submitted to the Other Worlds Boards ( I wasnt part of this list back then ). I have now created one for Graakhalia. You can find the other two at either the other world's board or The Vaults of Pandius. Here it is : Graakhalia ------- Journey's End Description : This is an elven longbow, crafted from a light wood of unknown origin to all but Graakhalians ( the wood is from the twisted forest ). The string is made of gnoll fur and sinew. Flowery engravings are drawn on the bow. History : Journey's End was created by an evil Sheyallia elf when the elves first arrived in Graakhalia. It's creator Simnunlas opposed integration whith the gnolls and was very infamous. He enchanted the bow himself and even got the wood from the twisted forest himself. The bow got it's name from the fact that Simnunlas often used it to prey upon unsuspecting travelers on the plains of fire. It also has killed many Graakhalians gnolls. The bow is infamous in Graakhalia. Game Details : This is a composite longbow +2, +3 against Gnolls. Traveler's cloak Description : This dull yellow cloak always apears dusty and worn and can't be cleaned, even by magic. It seems to be made for some tall human. The cloak does'nt seem magical at first. History : This cloak was created by a gnoll spellcaster of Graakhalia named Tunsial. It was his first magical item he created and he was quite proud of it. He eventually gave it to gnollish adventurers after they completed a quest he had set for them. Which was to retreive some rare fungus in the twisted forest. The adventurer's have traveled in Hule, Sind and even to Yavdlom and the Atruaghin plateau. During one of their travel they were slain by a wandering party of adventurers who taught they were common evil gnolls. The adventurers didn't suspect the cloak was magical and left it on the fallen gnolls. Game Details : This cloak protect it's wearer from the effect of the sun and natural heat, such as found in a desert. It also gives +1 bonus to Armor Class and finally +10% to thieves and ranger's hide in shadow skills but only in deserts, badlands and wastes. Hat of Disguise Description : In it's natural form this hat is a hood with a cord. It is dark brown and meant to be worn with a cloak of the same color. History : This hat of disguise was created in Sind and eventually fell into the hands of a Graakhalian gnoll Tunnviel who currently still posseses it. Tunnviel has been traveling the world and has visited many countries of the Known World using the hat's power to mask his appearance has a gnoll. Tunnviel travels in the assumed indentity of Altaros Baltruk a "fake" darokinian merchant. Game Details : This functions has a normal hat of disguise. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 18:06:22 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: The Stalker Subject: Re: Adventure Ideas On Mon, 14 May 2001 10:05:54 -0700, Joe Kelly wrote: >If any of you are struggling for ideas this is a great site, and he is always looking for contributions: Enjoy! > >http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/alex/Handbooks/WWWPlots/length.html > Wow! This is a long story and off-topic, but I'll just outline it. Last Unicorn Games (LUG) build their company up on a new Star Trek game a few years ago, publishing games and supplements based on the original series, the Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine (never got around to Voyager). At the high point of their time, they were bought by WOTC (about a year ago, IIRC). There was a problem for WOTC with this, though, because LUG's Star Trek game was based on their own 'Icon system', a d6 based system, one a 'drama die' (1=dramatic failure, 6=dramatic success). Yes, it sounds a little complicated, but trust me, it's a beatiful system and very easy to work with. However, WOTC was about to launch their d20 system, and were apparently reluctant to publish things under another system, and so a lot of finished products collected dust for quite a time as they tried to make up their mind as to what to do, much to the displeasure of many of us Trek RPG fans out here, btw. Eventually Paramount announced that all gaming rights, including RPG, had gone to Decipher, and WOTC was stuck with nothing - they had some former LUG employees who now couldn't work on their Trek game and since they had abandoned the d6 Icon system, they had nothing to show from buying LUG. All the former LUG folks worked for WOTC, but several were laid off when WOTC made cuts last christmas (causing harsh comments from the TrekRPG mailing list, btw). As it happens, all the former LUG employees, except one, have now left WOTC and instead joined Decipher to write the new Star Trek RPG, which sounds quite a lot like the old d6 Icon system. In case anyone is wondering, yes, I like Star Trek, and I play and enjoy LUG's game a lot - I think it's excellent! My apologies to the list moderator (sorry Geoff). I know this post is off- topic, but I just needed to put that comment in the proper context. Hope it's okay. - The Stalker aka Siroth Loxar, Captain of the U.S.S.
