I'm not sure if it's the same as the stuff in the Book of Lost Tales III. Anyway, Tolkien goes as far as to "refute the rumors" that Gandalf might have been an aspect of Manwe the Vala himself. Also, there's a short excerpt of a council of the Valar, where the Istari are sent off. Olorin/Gandalf doesn't wish to go, as he's so afraid of Sauron. But I guess we're drifting away from Mystara a bit here... The original idea I had was to use it to start a new campaign, around level 5. An older group of PC's (or NPC's) run through M1 : Into the Maelstrom, and the low-level PC's form the crew of a ship in their fleet. When the hig-level PC's return, thy are stuck. The theme would be a fight for survival. Some possibilities : Who knows what else is in that asteroid belt - old Alphatian structures and ships, dens of bizarre creatures, other abandoned members of the fleet. There are three kingdoms in the area, that will have been thrown into turmoil by the arrival of the fleet. The PC's will have to survive whilst full-scale war is going on. As they helped to cause it, they might want to try and end it. The area might be under immiinent invasion by another race, such as the Oards, who are using the place as a staging area for invasion of Mystara, or just to invade the three kingdoms. OF course, the PC's will almost certainly want to return home - this should be a central theme of the campaign. Would someone be so kind as to > clue me in? What sort of monsters are found there? One good thing to remember about Alfheim is that it is very sparsely populated. So there are many areas where nobody may go for years, where dark thigs may brood unnoticed. Some ideas: The Olf Forest from Lord of the Rings is a good example. You can devise a creature like the Old Man Willow - perhaps a magic-using treant who has taken root. He takes a rather dim view on anyone who trespasses his part of the forest. He could animate trees, summon forest creatures etc. Perhaps a solitary druid could function as Tom Bombadil? Dark imps are always a good choice. They are small, but their guerilla tactics may pose serious problems to even the strongest PCs in unfavourable forest terrain. They tend to use poisonous arrows (small darts), spiders and traps such as nets and pits. The faery folk are a good material for adventures, especially if you want to involve the human communities living on the fringes of the forest. The folklore of the celts has faery beings that steal human babies and sometimes eat them, switch them with their own offspring and so on. If you have the Gazetteer on Darokin, you can see the humanoid fortresses in the Orclands, the northern and northeastern border of Canolbarth. Invasions from there are always possible. The Rockhome Gazetteer introduces hard-core dwarves who periodically send mischief parties into eastern Alfheim. But these conflicts are seldom bloody. Alfheim town is one of the best cities I've ever seen in the Gazetteer series. Most of the inhabitants are humans from various countries. It has good opportunities for conflict, especially between different factions of one country. Ylaruamian Kin and Preceptor factions may battle it out (there's a good enough adventure idea for this in Gaz5). But, sadly, you'd need Gaz5 for this, unless you wish to develop the Alfeim city by yourself. About Bad Magic Points: If you haven't read Gaz5 then all this talk about bad magic doesn't ring any bells. The idea is that the Canolbarth forest was created by elven mages long time ago. Elven magic and extra rainfall gained from the Nithian curse keep up the forest. (That's why Ylaruam is a desert - the elves get the water.) Such a large-scale incantation has its drawbacks, however. At some points the forest magic has created bad points, which can cause madness, nightmares, summon monsters etc. In Vaults of Pandius you can find the map of Alfheim which shows the major bad magic points (http://dnd.starflung.com/alfheim.jpg). You can create temporary points to your own liking. By the way, the map also shows the good magic points. "Dreamlands" in the western border is the place where the book "Tall tales of the wee folk" situates the Court of Oberon from Shakespeare's "Midnight Summer's Dream". Lots of faery adventure options there. I'm not sure the rest are really Mystaran - I'll tell you some day when I do read them, unless someone beats me to it. Now, for reviews. (D&D novels are generally below average fantasy quality. There are better authors out there.) Let's start with the good. The Black Vessel is a good book. The author did some research on the setting, which is the Savage Coast / Red Steel. The story is nice and the characters likeable. It does a rather good job at getting the SC feel, including feelings toward the Red Curse. It adds new plots, characters, and story to the SC setting, none of which conflicts with canon but adds to it; it is considered MA-canon. Trivia: last Mystara item published. Son of Dawn, though a First Quest book, is well Mystaran and not so young audience oriented (ie, while good for a younger audience as most of the line, you can read it without feeling like you're reading a book for 12-year-olds). The story takes place on the Isle of Dawn / Sea of Dawn, and the Known World (notably Aengmor), in AC 1010. The book does a rather nice job of introducing the Shadow Elves, including many of their important NPCs (including some new ones), their bias and attitudes, and the difficulties involved in settling that new land for them (including internal frictions with the motherland, with new neighbors, the surface world, personal agendas, etc). The book does not conflict with canon, and can easily be meshed in (with the strained relations and uncertainty of the situation in 1010, it's easy to accept there was almost a war between Darokin and Aengmor, defused at the last moment, no?); it is considered MA-canon. Now, the less good. The Dragonlord Trilogy is interesting. At least the author did some research about Mystara, though there are errors here and there that conflict with canon. The novel does add a lot of information that does not conflict with canon and expand the setting, though (like early gnome history, or early Glantrian history). Some people like the draconic society described, some do not. The stroy, unfortunately, becomes too unrelated to Mystara at some point, with the alien invasion theme et al. The trilogy has little impact on the MA, but we try to not contradict it, though there isn't a clear stance whether we consider it MA-canon or not. Trivia: the author is a fraud. And finally the quite bad. Rogues to Riches is a strange novel, in that it is a parody of the genre. The heroes are in fact anti-heroes (heroes by accident, and despite themselves), and IIRC they win by sending the toxic odors of a giant's armpit to suffocate the dragon (or something like that - it might be farting. The book opens on a spitting contest). I didn't appreciate it that much, but if you like parodies and read it in that spirit then you might like it. There are many inside jokes (watch for character names, and don't forget to read things backwards especially spells). The story takes place in Norwold during the PWA era (I think Landfall has been captured by the HK and Oceansend is about to, or has just been). The book plays well on the dualistic attitude of the HKs (ruthless conquerors yet honorbound knights), and introduces some interesting NPCs (notably a princess - the book plays on all the cliches, I warned you already) and locales that can be used in a Norwold campaign. This book does not contradict canon, and in fact could almost be thrown in were it not for its parodic side, which means that most elements can be salvaged to add to NW and even the events in the books could be added as rumors or deformed folk story. Its MA-canonicity has never come in question, but I wouldn't mind seeing reference to characters here and there. The Penhaligon trilogy has some elements that can be used to flesh out the Penhaligon region (with some toning down so as to reduce the conflicts with canon), and some reusable NPCs (notably the dragon). The book conflicts with canon regularly, including with the rules (for immortality), and the story of alien invasion is not good and terribly disappointing for the Mystara fans. The trilogy is not MA-canon, though it is not impossible that the salvageable elements (the order, the dragon) may be used someday, if they have been worked into more mainstream Mystara by the fans beforehand. Trivia: canon lists it as a fiction within the gameworld (thus non-canon). Trivia: it links Mystara and First Quest through the village of Bywater. Dark Knight of Karameikos was obviously not written for Mystara, but probably for FR or GH or as a generic novel, and dumped into Mystara at a late stage. When you read it you have basically the same feeling as with Penhaligon: it starts out fine, and it seems like it will be nicely set in the setting, but soon enough you realize that it is not the case and that it will clash with the setting and go into totally un-Mystaran directions. The novel takes place in Karameikos in AC 1018. In several instances the novel doesn't care for the setting, with bands of mercs roaming freely in Karameikos and crossing borders, a dimensional prison in Rugalov, Planescape cosmology, or Ylari called Ylaruamites. These are just a few examples. The novel is semi-MA-canon, in that we salvaged what could be (some NPCs) and wrote events that would put Karameikos in a state (strained relations between the Traladarans and Thyatians) that set the correct background for the novel; the events in the novel themselves (ie the PS stuff) won't be reused in the MA as such, though the more Mystaran parts, ie the consequences due to the Thy-Traladaran relations and those PCs, are likely to be explored and made part of the MA-timeline. I've been more lengthy with the bad ones. grumph, that proves that it's easier to critic bad stuff than good stuff. In any case, even the bad ones have elements that can be interesting for the Mystaran completist (or collector). For the casual Mystaran reader, stick to the Black Vessel (only if you know and like SC, though) and Son of Dawn (only if you like SE and like post-WotI, though), and forget the rest. Otherwise, read them knowing they will clash with Mystara, and note along the way what you may want to salvage for your campaign. ===== ___________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau http://www.geocities.com/hmusseau/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Does > anyone have any suggestions as to how I could integrate them? I don't have RTTTOEE, but that won't stop me from throwing out some ideas anyway... First, you could run RTTTOEE as a sub-plot, in between adventures 1 and 2 of WOTI, since the character levels work out pretty well. I think it is more realistic to have multiple unrelated plots in a campaign, since the rest of the world doesn't stand still as each plot unfolds. OTOH, RTTTOEE is a *big* diversion that will likely take the party's full attention, so you may not be able to explore other WOTI related things. Another idea is to relate the two and intertwine them together. Here's a way you could do this: The Cult of Elemental Evil are Arik-worshippers who seek to release that immortal from prison. Not only is this a difficult task, but immortal watchdogs keep an eye on them and foil their plans whenever they reveal themselves. The cult has been keeping a low profile recently (before AC 1000), secretly building a powerful stronghold so that when they are finally discovered they can hold out long enough to finish their plans. You could foreshadow this by running B3 or some other adventure featuring a minor Arik worshipper. The Trial of Rad occurs, setting WOTI into motion, and the immortals are suddenly distracted. The lack of vigilance allows the TOEE to become much stronger and bolder than it normally would. Phase I of WOTI passes, and Rheddrian is released. Next the PCs investigate hommlett and the moathouse. I think I'd put this in a borderlands location, maybe near Selenica. At this point you can proceed with mixing WOTI and TOEE together. The PCs will uncover a dangerous cult, but their immortals are more concerned with WOTI. Trouble in Alfheim spills out into the Selenica area, the nomads threaten Darokin, and immortals send them on various quests, all keeping them from investigating the temple as it grows stronger and stronger. Maybe Arik gains factions among the Shadow Elves and in the Orclands during this time, and PCs have to deal with these. You could play this as "too much to do, too little time". As Phase II of WOTI approaches, the temple approaches the critical time, and Arik's followers continue to spread. A dark prophecy warns of dire things, and immortals are finally taking notice of the TOEE. You could conclude these in either order, but it would be nice to find some sort of tradeoff which the PCs are unable to stop. Maybe the temple partially succeeds in their plans and Arik is partially released, forming a FOURTH immortal faction in WOTI, drawing in the neutral immortals to oppose him, and also alarming the Entropics who up till now have just been playing. It would be interesting to see the Entropics allied with various other immortals to stop Arik! Alphaks and Orcus might join Arik of course. For very high level PCs this could pose an interesting scenario. Maybe Arik learns about the NoS and decides to use it's power to finish his release, so he teleports there (in a weakened avatar form) and attempts to stop the PCs from succeeding in Phase III, to take the artifact for himself. Maybe Arik is himself an Old One, and the other Old One has to show up to oppose him. Maybe Rheddrian is really Arik in disguise! Maybe Arik gets sucked into NoS and fully recharges it with evil power, so there is no "day of dread" but now Glantri becomes an evil shadowy land which attracts bad things. (If Arik is an Old One, maybe the other Old Ones punish him for his interference by *imprisoning* him within the NoS and modifying the artifact to continually drain his power and keep him from getting too strong -- but the drained power feeds the sphere of entropy. Again, lots of evil magic under Glantri!) It would fit in as, frankly, she really isn't that well known outside a small group. You could make her the twin sister of Jammudaru, perhaps... Lolth, on the other hand, already sort of exists, though in early proto-Canon. Arachne Prime, the Night Spider, was mentioned in M5 "Talons of the Night," by industry veteran Paul Jaquays. It lists her as a 20 HD Temporal, which would place her as a 6th level Initiate Immortal in the WotI rules. However, the adventure in M5 was set in an early, pre-Canon Known World in which the Empire of Thyatis is only a hundred years old though all the other nations exist as in Canon, and it is supposed to be set in the modern era, as it has King Ericall and whatnot. Anyway, Night Spider would make an excellent Lolth. IMC she is worshipped by the green-skinned Aran Elves (actually Aranea) of the forest lands of the Great Escarpment, so there could even be a "dark elf" tie in if needed... Arik, as I mentioned elsewhere (and has ben mentioned in this case by others) is an excellent substitute for Tharizdun. Finally, Iuz presents the most difficulty. Depending on the era of your campaign, you might want to make him a resurrected/Immortalized version of the Shadow Lord from Essuria, which might fit. Or, heck, just create him from whole cloth as an old Traladaran warlord from the Dark Ages. There's nothing that says you can;t make new Immortals, after all... I'd make him an Initiate, 2nd level. I saw connections to PC1(Immortals and fairies relate as associates if not equals)and the Rules Cyclopedia(nightwing), but the setting was not Mystara. Now I don't reommend Rogues to Riches, the parody stretches so far that it really can't fit into your campaign without players groaning in agony if you actually started using some of those names. And Norworld has enough high-powered monsters running around, the Ice Queen villain isn't really necessary. But I have to admit, when the sidekick anti-hero charged the blue dragon armed with nothing but a chicken, I couldn't stop laughing. I guess that was other peoples work. I agree with your reviews, I would rate Dark Knight a little higher though. I actually started my current campaign with that set and the village ended up being a small homestead several miles south of Verge, only it was later burned to the ground by goblinoids! There is much commercial for the K:KoA box set at the end, but there are odd references to Karameikos at times. For example, on one of the audio tracks, the thief mentions that he "has had enough of this stinking duchy", which I always took as a reference to when Karameikos was a duchy. At the beginning of the final adventure, it is specifically mentioned that the ruler of Karameikos is seeking adventurers to clear the land around the feared Mount Dread. The mountain is also a reference since it does appear on the map of Karameikos in the K:KoA set (in the Black Peak mountains to the north-west of Verge and Threshold). Then again, there is also Spelljammer stuff in the FQ set, so I guess Mystara/OD&D fanatics could use that as evidence that the FQ set is not Mystara. Besides, Eriadna and Thincol both became leaders of their respective empires after the Spike Assault in AC 959, and they are both central to the plot. Besides, the Pharaoh is given as Ramenhotep XXIII. In the PWAs, it was Ramenhotep XXIV, so that would put the adventure before that, and according to JA's list of rulers (p.117), Ramenhotep XXIV was crowned in AC 1002. CM1 is also where Alphatia was 1st introduced. CM1 says, about Thyatis, " This empire is much younger than Alphatia. Actually, it is little more than a century old. The empire has spread outward rapidly from Thyatis, its capital city. It now encompasses several large islands off the southern coast of the continent." In M5, this was revised so that Thyatis was "over 1000 years old", and then was canonized in DotE as just turning 1000. In fact, IMC, I established Thyatis according to CM1 before DotE, and it is now something like 175 AC, which is 2024 AY. Basically it's what we did with DKoK in the MA too: we kept what wasn't disruptive, and set the stage so that DMs who want to mesh Mystara with PS as is done in the novel may, but it doesn't affect the setting as anything but an option. >I agree with your reviews, I would rate Dark Knight a little higher though. Despite its flaws, at least they didn't nuke anything, and the alien invasions were kept to a minimum. They were also thoughtful enough to leave all the PS pages at the end, so you can easily cut them out. True :) The problem with that novel is that I remember only three things about it: the silly Rugalov extraplanar thing, the irritating Ylaruamite (or Ylaruamian, maybe) spelling, and the PS / Blood Wars ending (that didn't fit with the rest of the book, BTW). That's saying a lot. Well, we did salvage a couple of not so bad NPCs for the almanac. ===== ___________________________________________________________ Herve Musseau http://www.geocities.com/hmusseau/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From the Great Reckoning article in the Darokin Gaz, the tax codes are supposed to be so complicated, that the only way to fully take advantage of them is to hire an advocate (hence their popularity outside of court matters). As I opened up website after website, each with the warning that they had been closed for the last month due to Red Worm, I finally came across a document called the Blue Book. This large file had the first 96 pages listing by section number all the additions, deletions, appending, and typo's corrected (but only listed the section number, and what type of correction it was). The next 256 pages then listed the section number and the correction. Now if I only can find the real Blue Book, so I can corrolate the corrections to the sections I need; then I will get my money from the government. Now imagine an Alphatian mage looking into his Interethereal Global Communications Crystal Ball (the IGCCB for short), searching through the Councilar's Communication Efective Outreach Files (the CCEOF), finding the appropriate information under the title Department of Fiscal Operations for Public Spending (the DoFOPS for short), then to find the before mentioned referenced material, with no knowledge to find something only known as the Blue Book (an actual book somewhere in some library collecting dust; with somewhere on the IGCCB collecting all the changes). All right I have ranted on long enough; but I hope someone out there has had this same experience and if they haven't, they now can plague their players with an interesting idea of a new evil wandering monster, the Governmental Codes of Law and Justice (GCLaJ for short) ;) ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 10:05:58 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Castille Baromon de Preto Subject: Re: Known World Codes and Laws MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Oops, I forgot to mention the mages frustration on looking into his IGCCB for several months to find nothing, only to finally find something with big obnoxious warnings that the reason he couldn't find something earlier was because of some huge and ancient Red Wyrm plague on the ethereal plane. Door to other planes, that is. Sigil is an odd place that lies high about the Beastlands in the very center of the outer planes, and it is about as weird a place as you can imagine, which is probably a major reason why I sort of like Planescape stuff ;) The doors to other planes are just convient passages to walk through, though! PCs will need to find these doors, where they lead to (not a good idea to jump right into the 453rd layer of the Abyss or go to the Elemental Plane of Fire without prior protection), and what keys open them. The keys are not real keys in that sense, or rather they are unlikely to be, since keys can be just about anything. Yet Sigil is the 'cross-roads' of the outer planes where the planewalkers meet, and is devided into factions that fight for their own beliefs in the city. It's all very strange, so it doesn't appeal to everybody, but at least it's not just another forgettable copy of Tolkien's Middle Earth. It's about as far from it as you can get! There are still angels (called Aasimon for politically correct reasons) and demons (Tanar'ri) and devils (Baatezu) and everything else you would expect, but it very clearly not simply on the outer planes! The inner planes are also explored, of course, but the major part of the Planescape material (and most of the products released first) seems to focus on the outer planes. - The Stalker ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 17:20:43 -0700 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Dave Keyser Organization: Palmchip Subject: Re: Mystaran Novels MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The Stalker wrote: > > > >Interesting, so is the final adventure in the FQ box clearing the land > around Mount Dread? > > > > No, it actually called for the adventurers to enter the caves of the > mountain and clear out the monsters that lived in the lair of the evil > sorceror (not the 3e kind, this was way before that) Azazabus (don't > ask...). After reading through that book, I think I have a very good idea of how to describe the Mystara cosmology within its scope -- and it actually seems to work out better than most previous approaches. Of special interest is the appendix describing variant planes and cosmologies -- it has several features that I would make "standard" parts of a Mystaran cosmology. The Schattenalfen left the surface of Mystara behind a very, *very* long time ago, and the dwarves did not venture much beyond Rockhome before the Battle of Sardal Pass in BC 492. That's the new dwarves, though. The original dwarves, the Kololor dwarves are a different story. I've just checked the HW DM's sourcebook and found some *very* interesting details on p.12, as it seems the whole affair is much more complicated than we think. I'll just note what it says: "BC 1800: The dwarvish race on the Known World is slowly, inevitably dying out. The Immortal Kagyar the Artisan takes all remaining dwarves in the Known World. Half he transplants to the Hollow World, and half he reshapes into a new dwarven race. Now there are no remnants of the original dwarven race on the outer world. Some of the 'new dwarves' are returned to the Northern Reaches, where the largest dwarf colonies had been, and eventually become the Modrigswerg clans; others are planted in the Rockhome region. Both groups are given false memories and believe that the Modrigswerg dwarves also originally lived in the Rockhome lands." Boy, doesn't that just turn everything upside down? ;) So, I *reall* doubt the Schattenalfen were involved in this, if the assumed story of the Modrigswerg "curse"/evil is even true! Then again, "dark elves" could mean what it does in Dragonlance, where dark elves are simply a term for elves who have turned to "dark" philosophies and been "cast from the light" by their brethren... In that case we could have an entire clan of evil elves running around, or maybe they died a long time ago, yet their evil legacy lives on.... ? - The Stalker ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 00:21:32 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: David Knott Subject: Mystara cosmology and 3E MotP -- Material Plane MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The 3E Manual of the Planes actually greatly simplifies the task of describing the planes in a cosmology. After reading through that book, I took the plane and dimension descriptions in Wrath of the Immortals and ran them through the newest 3E book and found that the information in WotI is clearly consistent but incomplete in terms of the 3E MotP. Terminology: There are two terms from WotI for which the 3E MotP uses different words: "Dimension" becomes "cosmology" and "node" becomes "Portal created by Immortal". Traits of Material Plane: In most respects, the Mystaran Material Plane matches that given in the 3E MotP, with the following exceptions: Pantheon: The most noticeable difference is that Mystarans revere a pantheon of Immortals who generally have little in common with the deities of other settings. Gravity: Gravity is normal on the outer surface of Mystara. Elsewhere on that plane, gravity may be of any type except subjective directional. Connections to other planes: In the standard "Great Wheel" cosmology, the Material Plane is connected to other planes via the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, and the Plane of Shadows. The 3E MotP describes in detail the consequences of eliminating any of these planes from a given cosmology. Astral Plane: Here we have evidence of a strongly negative nature about the connection between the Astral Plane and the Material Plane. The Alphatians clearly reached the Material Plane by a route that can be simplified to the following: Old Alphatia to Draesten to Astral to Ethereal to Material. In the 2000 years since their arrival on Mystara, they failed to discover any more direct route through those planes. Given the basic nature of such spells as Astral Projection, I would take this failure as evidence of a lack of direct connection between the Material and Astral Planes. However, when we look at the sidebar about the consequences of eliminating the Astral Plane, we see that most of the effects mentioned as not working without an Astral Plane do in fact occur on Mystara. Mystarans clearly can teleport and summon monsters from other planes, although the evidence for them casting Astral Projectiion is non-existent. In combination, the available information would indicate that the Mystaran Material Plane is indeed disconnected from the Astral Plane -- but some other plane (of which two likely alternative candidates are named in the 3E MotP) serves to provide the planar connections that the Astral Plane would normally provide. Ethereal Plane: There is no question that the Mystaran Material Plane is coextensive with the Ethereal Plane and that the Ethereal Plane provides access to (at least) the Astral Plane and the four Elemental Planes. Since the Astral Plane is totally disconnected from the Material Plane, we thus have evidence that the Ethereal Plane extends beyond the Material Plane and thus that the Mystaran Ethereal Plane has a Deep Ethereal region. Plane of Shadows: In the 3E MotP, this plane is intended mainly as a way to move between the Material Planes of alternate cosmologies. >From available Mystara/OD&D material, the evidence for any sort of connection between the Mystaran Material Plane and the Plane of Shadows is rather weak, consisting of exactly two items: The Project Image spell and the Nightshade class of monsters. However, if we re-interpret the Project Image spell as being "Illusion (Figment)" rather than "Illusion (Shadow)" and don't require the Nightshades to have been able to reach Mystara directly from the Plane of Shadows, then the necessity of such a direct connection is eliminated, thereby making travel between Mystara and other settings more difficult. For the two alternate cosmologies named in WotI (Myth and Nightmare), it is not at all clear that either one required access to the Plane of Shadows for contact. The Nightmare cosmology appears to have been reached via the Astral Plane or the Region of Dreams, while the Myth cosmology access the Mystara cosmology via portals that could not be rebuilt once they collapsed. In summary, it is not at all clear whether the Mystara Material Plane is connected to the Plane of Shadows -- but if it is, few if any Mystaran spellcasters have figured out how to exploit that connection. Other planes: Of the variant planes listed in the appendix to the 3E MotP, there is evidence that the Mystara Material Plane is connected to the Region of Dreams (per Prince Jherek's Secret Craft in G:KoM), the Plane of Mirrors (per the module "Skarda's Mirror), the Spirit World (per Gaz 12 and the description of "Limbo" in a VotPA article), the Temporal Energy Plane (per "Chronomancer" and various modules involving time travel), and the Plane of Faerie (per PC 1). Limbo and the Spirit World are the prime candidates for providing access to the Outer Planes that would normally be provided by the Astral Plane -- but at this point even the Ethengarian shamans (the only ones with direct experience of the Spirit World) have no idea of the larger significance of either plane. ******************************************************************** The Other Worlds Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/OtherWorlds.asp The Mystara Homepage: http://www.dnd.starflung.com/ To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@ORACLE.WIZARDS.COM with UNSUB MYSTARA-L in the body of the message. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 00:50:58 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: David Knott Subject: Mystaran cosmology and 3E MotP -- Astral Plane MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >From the point of view of those on the Mystaran Material Plane, the main distinctive factor of the Mystaran Astral Plane would seem to be its lack of any direct connection to the Mystaran Material Plane. As a result, Mystaran adventurers seldom if ever astrally project themselves onto that plane -- more typically, they physically enter the Ethereal Plane, cast themselves off into the Deep Ethereal, and then ultimately find a portal that enables them to reach the Astral Plane physically. From there they are able to reach the Outer Planes associated with the five Spheres (Brynn, Draesten, Entrem, Mirage, and Pyts) or alternate cosmologies (Nightmare, Myth, and perhaps Vortex). The Mystaran Astral Plane has the following traits: Dimensional shifting: Because the Astral Plane is shifted one dimension away from the orientation of either the Mystaran or Nightmare cosmology, mortals from either of those cosmologies appear two-dimensional on the Astral Plane. Spells cast by them have their effects show up perpendicularly to them (but still two-dimensional). As a result, mortal spells are particularly easy to avoid -- treat any target of a spell cast by any mortal being on the Astral Plane as having the Improved Evasion rogue class ability even if he does not. Combatants from the Mystaran and Nightmare cosmologies remain completely immune to each other's spells on the Astral Plane. This ability does not apply to Immortals and their Exalted level minions, as such beings and their spell effects are fully three dimensional on the Astral Plane. WotI suggests penalties to saves vs. such spells, but I suspect that letting their spells function normally would be penalty enough for dealing with their spells on the Astral Plane. Connections to other planes: The Astral Plane is the preferred way to access other planes and cosmologies. While most outer planes are accessed by passing through the main outer plane of a given Sphere and then moving on to the plane of interest, there do remain other planes (such as those of the Draconic Cluster) that are accessible directly through the Astral Plane. The dimensional shifting of the Astral Plane clearly suggests it as the obvious way to reach the Nightmare cosmology. As for the Vortex cosmology -- the route to that cosmology is not known even to the Immortals, but the description of the Far Realm plane suggests that it can be reached from the Astral Plane and that anyone who can reach that plane and survive may be able to travel beyond it to the Vortex cosmology. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 01:05:21 -0400 Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: David Knott Subject: Mystaran cosmology and 3E MotP: Ethereal Plane MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Most of the information for the Mystaran Ethereal Plane was covered in the Material Plane message, but for completeness I will reitierate the relevant material: Planar traits: Except as noted, the Mystaran Ethereal Plane matches that described in the 3E MotP. Magic: The Ethereal plane has no native life or weather, so spells that summon native life or affect the weather do not work on this plane. Movement: Matter on the Material Plane affects movement as follows: Vacuum: Double normal speed Air: Normal speed Fire or water: 3/4 normal speed Soil or wood: 1/2 normal speed Rock: 1/4 normal speed Metal: Blocks normal movement Access to other planes: The Ethereal Plane confers access to the Material Plane, all four Elemental Planes, and the Astral Plane. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 09:33:30 CEST Reply-To: Mystara RPG Discussion Sender: Mystara RPG Discussion From: Giulio Caroletti Subject: Re: Mystaran Duergar (was: Mystaran Novels) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The Stalker said: In that case we could have an entire clan > of evil elves running around, or maybe they died a long time ago, yet their > evil legacy lives on.... ?
