A discussion of epic-level gaming in Ravenloft several months back inspired me to prove that it could be done, and with the help of some great volunteers, the Reckonings epic-level RL gamehas seen a lot of progress!

It's a little slow going because of the limitations of online gaming, but the PC's are finally in RL and are beginning to deal with the changes to their epic powers. Unfortunately, we are now down to two players, the others having dropped out over the past year due to bad cases of real life.

I'm in need of a few more vict--er...volunteers, to help continue this experiment. There is room for new players to step into their shoes, either creating new characters or (preferably) picking up the old ones. Also, for those who don't want a big commitment or would like a change of pace, there are a number of NPC's that I'm hiring out, including a number of minor villains. Anyone interested can let me know by email, IM on either this board or MSD's, or by posting here or in the "NPC's for Hire" thread.

If at all possible, I'd prefer new players take one of the preexisting PC's or cohorts. New players will get all the info from the previous player, and the freedom to change anything not already made public. This allows the new player to personalize the character as much as possible.

PC's
Tessius Lionheart was the de facto leader of the party (!!), a royal spymaster who helped put together this group to go rescue his country's royal family from Saragoss. The first to be separated from the group, Tessius has managed to join up with the equally lost Balin (see below) thanks to a wish from his luck blade. Unfortunately, his clothes and equipment did not make the journey, leaving him now only with his considerable cunning and skill.
[Anyone who wants to play Tessius will have to cope with the lack of equipment. His is still a 27th level stealth-based character, so much of his value is in skills and feats anyway.]

Saint Balin Cormaeril is a Cormyrean knight who has left his followers at home to follow Tessius into the Great Unknown, taking only his faithful gold dragon steed (Sariel, below) for company. Balin was abducted by mist ferrymen while exploring, and has come to rest on the isle of Ghastria in the Sea of Sorrows. Now joined by Tessius, Balin is pursuing rumors of a pirate king who rules a nearby isle.
[Balin remains mostly untouched, having lost only his mount Sariel, who remains with the main group. Anyone who picks up Balin will have the option of playing Sariel (see below) as well.]

Ciera is a mysterious sorceress, one of the Witches of Rashemen. For reasons no one else understands, Ciera--reportedly a woman in advanced age--has arrived as a child who cannot have seen more than a dozen summers. Ciera remains with the main group, but her contribution of late has been mostly scrying and information.
[Ciera was only recently 'orphaned,' and can be adopted in roughly the same condition she started in--she's used up a few spells, that's all. As a bonus, whoever takes Ciera has the option of also adopting her bodyguard Kinketsu (see below)]

Arcadius is a powerful elven wizard, a friend of Cortez (a current PC)who disappeared alongside the royal family, and who managed to make the trip to Mordent and assemble a rescue party. On the return trip, however, Arcadius discovered that he had been cursed to arrive too late to save the royals, so in a last-ditch effort, he teleported into the Mists, allowing himself to be mist-led into the future while the others resumed their course.
[Arcadius may arrive at any moment, due to the nature of his curse. On his previous visit to Saragoss, his spellbooks were stolen, but he has managed quite well with magic items alone and has almost his full spell allotment. Regaining his spellbooks would, of course, be a high priority upon reaching Saragoss, but I daresay he'll hold his own quite well until he gets them!]

Anders Black is a powerful psion uncarnate and soulknife, still reeling from the altered effects of his powers in Ravenloft. His excursions into the spirit world as a psion uncarnate have allowed him to fight spirits on their own turf and even rescued the entire party from a will-o-sea, but his new ghostly appearance has caused some confusion. Recently he nearly assaulted a sailor whose mind 'refected' an illithid attack (BoSouls: Realms Beyond). As he struggles to understand these changes to his psionic abilities, others in the group are openly wondering if he's lost his mind altogether.
[Anders has suffered a harsh learning curve, but is otherwise unchanged and in a great position to bounce back to full activity.]

Cohorts
The following are cohorts of the epic characters who are available for play as PC's. They are the equivalent of 22nd level characters. Both are unchanged from their original forms.

Sariel is a very young gold dragon who served as a mount and companion for Saint Balin (above). Sariel has added abilities due to being a paladin's mount and an epic cohort, including the ability to cast a few spells. Sariel was separated from his master but remains with the main group, taking human form unless he needs to use his draconic abilities.

Kinketsu is Ciera's Tuigan bodyguard, a warrior-monk from the steppes. His monk abilities and a wide array of magic items make him a versatile and formidable combatant. Kinketsu's tightlipped pragmatism is currently working overtime as he struggles to stay ahead of the ghostly spies that linger on the heroes' ships.

Any questions?

*Update!*

We may have a player for Tessius, but I'd prefer to reunite him and Balin with the rest of the group at the same time, for story's sake. Does anyone want to play Balin? Paladin of Lathander, Fist of Raziel, has the saint template from the BoED, rides a gold dragon...anyone?

Hmm, Ravenloft and Epic level have collided in the past as well. There may be some way to get these two elements to work together, but don't you think that:
Does anyone want to play Balin? Paladin of Lathander, Fist of Raziel, has the saint template from the BoED, rides a gold dragon...anyone?

is a liiiittle "non-Ravenloftish"?

I'd really really like to participate in this, but my strange time zone and the lack of 24/7 internet (i use a 56k dial-up connection with 3-hour per day limit) are strong drawbacks.

Hope you find some nice players though...Your cause is good enough to make some of our casuals "de-lurk" for a change! ;)

Really!? Tell me more!

Absolutely. That's what he looks like when he entered RL, as a stock FRish hero thinking he was going on a milk run. Give him about a month and he'll blend in a lot better...if he lives. :D

Note that one PC has already lost his fantastic inventory due to a twisted wish. I'd be very surprised in Balin managed to finish this adventure with half his equipment, let alone the dragon.

Too bad! I'd love to have you! FWIW I was in a similar situation when I started the game, and I just wrote my posts offline and logged on just long enough to post them and review replies.

Hope you find some nice players though...Your cause is good enough to make some of our casuals "de-lurk" for a change! ;)

Glad to hear that people are interested!

*Another Update*

Tessius and Balin have been claimed (thanks Gurthoron!), which will make a great addition to our group. We have someone investigating Ciera as well. I'm still open to people taking PC's, but since we've got a few of those covered I can relax and open up the call for guest NPC's!

Playing a guest NPC as opposed to a PC:

* You don't have to post as often, or for as long. If a response is required to continue the storyline you have the same three days as everyone else, but this won't happen as often with guests as it does with PC's. Also, not all NPC's will remain in play for a long time.

* You can play a villain! You get to toy with the PC's, knocking them off their epic pedestals. :D Now, you don't have to play a villain--there are many other NPC's to choose from--but for some folks that's half the fun of playing an NPC!

* You won't be epic level. The highest-level NPC in this adventure will be around 18th level. If you're wondering ghow you will pose a challenge to epic PC's...don't worry. You will. I can't explain in full here, but suffice it to say that the home-court advantage is nothing to be laughed at. Same goes for attrition.

I'm especially on the lookout for people who play spellcasters, because we've got several NPC spellcasters and you know how versatile they can get.

Alright, this game has seen a whole year go by with our new group, and we're still going! Only the first two--Balin and Tessius--are claimed. The others are fair game. Come check out the action, and see what you think.

HI, Are you still in need of some players? If so, when do you play and what are you allowing?

At this point, I'm only taking players for the preexisting PC's who've been abandoned. We may have someone for Ciera, but there's still Arcadius (Wizard) and Anders (Soulknife/Psion Uncarnate), along with Kinketsu (Ciera's Monk cohort) if the Ciera player isn't going to pick him up, too.

Once the PC's are all claimed, I may reopen the game for other PC's or guest NPC's.

What did you have in mind?

Sure is! Take a look at http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=7 and follow the threads that have "Reckonings" in them. "The Overlook" is our OOC conversation thread, while "Umberlee's Belly" and "The Sea of Sorrows" are story threads. "Cut Scenes," "Dedication and Disclaimer" and the "Character Sheet" threads are support threads. Most have links to the original host site in the first post, so you can follow them back to the beginning, but the summary thread is lagging behind--we're trying to fix that.

We've seen the capture of one DL, the death of another, and a third is in battle with a saint PC. So far, a major lesson is that the DL's are sometimes better left alive. Come check it out!
