I am bringing a few newcomers to the game through a 1st edition RL campaign...I have a copy of the original Ravenloft...but not House of Strahd....it seems we are having difficulty mapping using the 3d-style maps...can anyone tell me if the maps from House of Strahd are the same or different....or if there are traditional 2D maps of Castle Ravenloft....

Is House of Strahd worth purchasing? I have mixed some 2nd Edition play in with 1st.....not really interested in 3rd Edition....

Thanks much,

House of Strahd maps are the same as in I6, 'three-dimensional'. There was a problem with some of the labeling on the Silver Anniversary re-print map, but there are no overhead-view, 2D maps of Castle Ravenloft that I am aware of.
House of Strahd has an higher-level Strahd than is in I6, if you want to run a higher level party. I prefer the third edition writeup of him in Gazetteer I, personally.

Hello! Just thought I'd chime in, since I've been quiet for a little too long around here. I'm due for my every-three-months post...

House of Strahd is by and large a reprint of Ravenloft, but there is one thing that is definitely worth mentioning. There are sidebars throughout the text titled "Strahd's Opportunity," where the authors give suggestions on how Strahd could harry the PCs through their adventure. They are actually quite clever in most cases, and far surpass the original module's use of Strahd as a wandering monster who attacks for a few rounds and then flees.

Of course, if little sidebars like that aren't to your taste, then it's best to stick with the classic original! :D

That site always amazes me. Every time I think I've seen everything they have to offer, another link turns up. And these maps are every bit as cool as all the others that they've provided!
