Hi, i'm just about to start my first Dragonlance campaign but i can't decide which era to play it in.
Most of my players are going to be magic-users of some kind or another and the campaign is going to be very magic orientated but from just before the cataclysm onward. Magic is hated and/or very scarce. I would like to play it when the Towers of High Sorcery are at the height of their power and magic is respected. Any help is appreciated.

If thats your goal, then you should play before the time of the Kingpriest of Istar. It was right about when the Kingpriest came about that magic started to go downhill, then the cataclysm struck and people spiraled into hatred towards all magic. War of the Lance there was some repair to the ideals of the mage, but not much, then they go and loose all power again. Now they struggle to regain that foothold on the world, and do it all while they are mistrusted and disliked. Yeah, the best time would definetly be in the beginning, when the towers were freshly built, none had been destroyed, and people actually like mages.

I think that the time of the rise of the Kingpriests and the Lost Battles might not be a bad time to play wizard characters in the Dragonlance world.

So that would be around the end of the age of dreams and the beginning of the age of might?

speaking of ages:

how many ages are there and what's there names?

Does DL have a timeline like CE/BCE or like BBOY/ABOY (From Star Wars)

I think that they date everything from the Cataclysm when the gods struck down the land of Istar.

Thats right. It's:

BC (Before cataclysm)

AC (After cataclysm)

Then i think it's ASC (After second cataclysm)

I would either put it in after the blue lady war, or after the war of the lance, of keep the the time line of the game and put it in after the war of the souls.
Advantages in after the war of the souls is that you will be able to play charcater classes that is not allowed in other time poeriods, such as the sorcercer. the other two is the those time ar4 flewxable and not olat of epic things are going on so you can add you own epic and story lines.

I ran a campaign (both for 2nd Edition and 3.5) right after the War of the Lance. I have a fondness for the novels and the characters, so having a chance to get to meet them (and for me, running them) is always a plus in my book. Also, going up against the last of the Dragon Lords and the remains of their armies is always a fun thing to do. As far as I know, though I could be wrong, there is no information as to who took out some of them freeing the people and the land from these powerful oppressors. That way, you can look at it as though your characters rose up and done this, even though there is no written record of just who these great heroes were. Also, people are still kinda wary about the Knights of Solamnia, so playing one of them in this time period upholding the old ways of the Knights is also a great role playing experience. And in my opinion, playing a Wizard of High Sorcery in any time period is a lot of fun. Of course, this is all coming from a guy that believes that the golden age of playing in Dragonlance is still 1st and 2nd Edition. Best of luck in your decision, and I am certain that both you and your players will have a great time in your campaign.
