I strongly encourage everyone to use the Sanity Loss rules presented in Unearthed Arcana for your Ravenloft games, they´re that great mix of rules and mood so rarely seen in RPG.

There are already a detailed set of rules for Madness saves in the RLPHB.

I know the Ravenloft PHB already has rules for madness, but I think they aren't as good as those presented in Unearthed Arcana. For example, in those presented in Ravenloft, once a character gets a high enough Will save bonus, nothing can affect him anymore. Not so with those presented in UA. No matter what your stats are, you can always go mad.

I'm not familiar with the rules in UA but am very familiar with the rules from Call of Cthullu - which i also love. I believe the improved ability to avoid going insane is a major benifit for running a long campaign in RL. Its hard to make forward progress when one PC permanently like to chew on bones, another is convinced that there is a vast conspiracy of horses out to kill him another has homicidal rages when presented with "X", and yet another PC has regressed to a childlike state. On the other hand those four PCs could be spectacular for a one shot.

The rules in CoC pretty much guarrantee new chracters need to be created every "plot thread". If UA is similiar its not great for a long running campaign.

The UA rules are almost an exact copy of the CoC ones. Anyone can go mad in Ravenloft PHB rules, regardless of stats, but you aren't promised complete insanity by 10th level.

Still don't see a point in changing.
