WotL sourcebook fluff?

I am pondering whether or not to buy The War of the Lance sourcebook. I have the original Dragon Lance adventures, and have the Dragonlance books which are quite informative concerning events of that time period. I'm not really concerned with the crunch that might be found in the WotL sourcebook, but I am interested in the fluff. Particularly, is there any need I would have to get the WotL sourcebook. Is there any additional fluff in there that I don't already have, or that is covered in depth enough that the novels and DLA don't cover it already?

I'm not concerned about statistics of characters, new classes or any such stuff, more in the lines of what occurred in each nation, which Highlords covered which areas at what times, and how they might have employed their armies differently, as well as other such items. How much fluff is in the WotL sourcebook and is it worth buying for someone who already has a lot of Dragonlance material (albeit old stuff, but most of it I think is relavant still) covering that time period?

It has a pretty decent amount of fluff, though I have to admit I bought it solely for the redo on the KoS PrC. I have only opened the book three times since I bought it last year.

I haven't played DL for a couple of years (my new DM insists on Mystara) , but I have kept up my DL novel habit. I just bought WotL and ToHS just to supplement the novels and I think they are great. Lots of cool background information, stats etc. I wish they had produced gaming material of this quality when I was an active DL gamer.

I would recommend both books even though they are a little pricy.

I think the Fluff in it is well worth buying it. I'm more of a fluff player (that didn't sound right ) and this book is a well centralized source book for it.

1. Even though you are not concerned with statistics tons of NPC that were important to the WotL Era are described with background information.

2. Even though you say you're not concerned with new classes, the Master, Tinker, and Handler are at the core of Dragonlance and they are all well designed. So it's great to have them.

3. The WotL has the most complete collection of information on the geography of Anslaon in one book. This includes histories of nations, descriptions of governments and information on tons of spots that have never been covered.

4. There is complete coverage of the war, including dragon highlords, who succeeded them, where they were stationed, what territories they covered and when they covered them. Plus there is detailed information on each of the dragonarmies and the different tactics they use.

I think for a sourcebook that covers one of the most described eras of the setting there is still lots of new material. I mean if it has the name of the Mayor of Solace in it, then it's pretty darn complete. :D

While it may seem like fluff at first glance some of the background NPCs I am brigging back for a campaign set in the Age of Mortals. Now most of these NPCs will be either Elves or Dwarves as most everybody else will be a little too old. Some of the nPCs are Aliona (Qualinesti elf), Arman Kharas (Hylar Dwarf), Bor Es-Drago (Minotaur Marauder, not sure how long a minotaur lives), Fewmaster Toede (Hehehehehe), Kronin-Alin Thistleknot, Lucien of Takar (Half-Ogre highlord), Serinda Elderwood (Silvanesti), Tarak (Silvanesti), Thunderbane (Hill Giant). I even thought of returning Feal-Thas to life and using him but I am still toying with the idea.

I am also currently using the adventure in the back (modified) in order to administer a player his test of sorcery.

So as you can see I am using the book more as a springboard for pregened NPCs with backgrounds already made.

I wish there was a place to play DL. Most people only play D&D generic style or star wars or some stuff like that.

I feel your pain Juergen. I don't think Eberron is helping matters either. Between that and FR, there isn't much room for DL anymore, except for those of us who crawl this and DL.com's boards.

It's a little worse in my situation though. In my area, I get that sideways glance, and a roll of the eyes whenever I mention D&D at all, much less dragonlance. Hence, it is a bit hard to get someone to even roll the dice with me, much less steer a campaign toward Krynn. (I think I need to move south. It seems like a lot more players live in the lower states.)

Here is something I have done and seen several others do- If you are looking for a game/players just put the info in your signiture- I did and got a several interested people for my Dark Sun game.

Back to the WotL- just picked it up- man it is a huge book! I seen it on Half.com or Amazon.com for like $30 the other day- which is good seeing how the cover price is like $45.

I like the vast amount of information that is in the book- though is you have read the Chronicals several times you would get about the same information. It does have stats on prominent characters/personalities in the game though. Overall I would say that while not really something that you must have to play in the War of the Lance era it would not hurt and may help in several areas if you do pick it up. Those are just my two bits though .

HEY! Where did my signiture go? I already had it in there asking for people interested in joining a group to PM me. I don't know why it didn't come up...

Check your settings- you may have it so that your sig only shows up once per page on your computer- you might not see it but others will if their settings are different.

Look threw it first then buy. I baught it and I liked it even though I do not use the material in my game now, i might later. It is a good book, but it is not the best book I read but it is good.
