Hi.

I was just wondering what the differences are between the first Planescape monstrous compendium appendix and the Outer Planes monstrous compendium appendix. The first Planescape appendix supposedly "replaces" the Outer Planes appendix, but are there any notable omissions, or additions? For that matter, is there a webiste that indexes what monsters are in what 2e compendiums?

Thanks,
Angus

They're mostly the same, except the Planescape book is filled with beautiful color illustrations and occasionally invents myths, legends, and humorous quotes for the various creatures.

The Outer Planes Appendix did have a few monsters that the Planescape book didn't reprint. Most of them appeared in later Planescape materials, except for one: the genie-like Air Sentinel, natives of Bytopia.

The Planescape Monstrous Compendium also added some monsters that didn't appear in the Outer Planes Appendix.

The only other thing the Outer Planes Appendix has that the Planescape Monstrous Compendium doesn't (besides black-and-white art by Tom Baxa) is a a few short excerpts from the Codex of Mordenkainen describing the wizard's prophetic visions of the Blood War.

If it's important to you, the Planescape book recalculated the XP values of all the creatures in the Outer Planes Appendix, which were originally way too high.

Anyway, the monsters in the Outer Planes Appendix are:

If it's important to you, the Planescape book recalculated the XP values of all the creatures in the Outer Planes Appendix, which were originally way too high.

And by "way to high" he means about 4 times what they were in the PSMC (at least for fiends). The only way I think it is even justifiable to give the Outer Planes Appendix amount of experience is if they use their gate ability as a first resort and no xp is given for the summoned fiends.
