My friend recently discovered a really old DnD box set in his attic. His father used to play, I guess. I was wondering what edition it is. It has copyright of 1983-84. can any long-time players help me out? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : scorba1 Date : 09-18-03 07:45 PM Probably the old Basic Dungeons and Dragons set. Did he say what was on the box cover? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : blackprinceofmuncie Date : 09-19-03 02:04 AM It's probably either the Basic Set or the Expert Set. Basic was edited by Tom Moldvay and has a rulebook with a red cover. Expert was edited by David CooK and Steve Marsh and has a blue cover. EXCELLENT GAME!!!! You should give it a try, just for kicks. B/E D&D is still one of my favorite games to play. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : diaglo Date : 09-19-03 10:08 AM does it have dice?:D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : LeperMessiah Date : 09-19-03 04:52 PM Originally posted by diaglo does it have dice?:D Yes it does! There a bit beat up, a lot of scratches, but they work. And.... I think it has the red cover. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Lost_and_Damned Date : 09-19-03 06:13 PM Originally posted by blackprinceofmuncie It's probably either the Basic Set or the Expert Set. I always forget about those because I hated them so much.;) Erol Otus is my favorite artist of all time. I can't understand why TSR didn't name him "Official Drawer of Cover Art in Perpetuity!". -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Lost_and_Damned Date : 09-20-03 06:37 AM Originally posted by blackprinceofmuncie Ooooh right! Otus's art is too childish and Pulpish Elmore's art is much better IMVHO -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : blackprinceofmuncie Date : 09-20-03 06:50 PM I agree that Larry Elmore is a very good artist. His 2e stuff and the Dragon covers he did in the 80s were fantastic. For me though, nothing captured the atmosphere of Basic/Expert D&D like Erol Otus's stuff. It may be cartoonish, but it's also fantastic/heroic in an innocent way that always seemed inextricably tied to way B/ED&D was "supposed to be" (quotes indicating this is just my opinion). And aside from the lack of Otus art, the thing I disliked the most about the 83/84 editions was that they broke the rules into two books. I didn't need that. I never let my players see anything but the covers of the books anyway. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:17 AM.
