Today and yesterday the site has been coming up with a message that it's been suspended. Does anyone know if this has happened before? I really hope the site will be back up; a lot of energy has been put into it...

Looks like they exceeded a monthly bandwidth, or the owner ran into financial difficulties. Pretty early in the month to exceed a set bandwidth, unless someone was hitting the site very, very hard.

Ken Marable indicated that there wasn't any financial problem when he spoke at Gen Con less than a month ago, but there is a donations button if, when it comes back up, you want to help him out.

From the pw_managers mailing list:

This is news to me. Ken is out of town but will return tonight. I'm pretty sure the hosting bill went through in the beginning of the year. I wonder if we exceeded our bandwidth limit or something.

I'd have replied sooner, but I was away from home all weekend and was gaming nearly the entire time (Shadowrun on Sat, PS on Sunday).

Clueless has been getting in contact with the host, but it's hard to get answers because she's the coder but not the person paying the bills/the owner so they weren't wholly willing to immediately talk to us. We're trying to get in touch with Ken to see what is up.

Money for hosting should not be an issue given that we've had enough donations to help cover it, plus a number of us, myself included, would be willing to cut a check to the host immediately if it was something that simple. My guess is either a check got lost in the mail, or arrived late and paperwork hasn't caught up on the host's end, or in some way it'd be kinda a backhanded compliment if we exceeded bandwidth allowance that we'd paid for simply because of popularity.

As soon as I find out more I'll let folks know. I'm hedging my bets on bandwidth being exceeded, and if this is something that may be a frequent issue in the future, I'm willing to pitch in to cover the charges for additional bandwidth.

Something to consider is Planewalker just won the Silver Ennie. That may have generated enough traffic to put the site over its bandwidth limit.

If you haven't noticed, the site is currently down. Not to worry, it's
only temporary.

It's a technical issue with eating up too many processes. So, all data
and code is fine, and is currently being moved over to a temporary
server. So the site should be back online sometime today. It should
function the same as it always has at its temporary home, though I
imagine somewhat slower of a connection. During that time, it might be
a good idea to take a break from submitting and editing new content.
Mostly since we'll definitely be monkeying in the code to resolve the
issue and I don't want to worry about the loss of newly submitted data.

I'm talking with Tech Support, Sarah, and Eric to track down the
issue. Once that is resolved, the site should be moved back to it's
old home and everything will be back to normal.

I'll post more when I know more.

Thanks,
Ken

We got caught into a loop (or someone was spamming refresh) on an SQL
error on friday - I killed the code causing the loop but it might be the
repeated errors that was triggering that was causing the problem.
Especially if we were near our limits after that and then some little
issue just broke the camel's back. Basicly someones login got screwed up
in the database and instead of reporting the problem, they just hit
refresh continuously - as if that would fix it.

If they have a way to trace it back to a particular script or aspect of
code that was causing it I'd love to see it - if it's in SQL then I can
start going back through the system and pushing things into more of an
optimized system. There should be some way to backtrace it.

You may also want to find out if there's some way to associate me with an
'authorized person to answer code related questions' - that way I can go
'wtf' if something like this happens again. Once we're back up I'll put a
note in the forums reminding folks that if they see an SQL error it's
critically important that they tell us about it instead of ignoring it.

In the words of Danny Kaffee, "Now, I don't know what any of that means, but it sounds pretty bad."

In the words of Danny Kaffee, "Now, I don't know what any of that means, but it sounds pretty bad."

In laymen's terms, what happened is a member of Planewalker tried to log on, it caused an error somewhere in the system, and the code didn't properly trap the error, so it kept causing additional errors that eventually crashed the system.

I'm not sure they can do anything until the website owner gets home (did I read it right that he's out of town?). Even after that it may take a little time to get it back up & running.

Its likely that if they can work on it again, then they brought it up to do some testing, and took it back down when they were finished. My understanding is that they'll probably have to do some modifications to the code to see what's going on with untrapped errors.

Still working on the code. I'll ask Clueless once she's off of work. But as I understand it, she's been seriously busy with coding on other projects for work that had to be finished before the start of this week.

But seriously, hopefully the site will be up to withstanding whatever is thrown at it. And hopefully not everyone will find out at once that the site is up. I guess we will see when the site finally comes up :D

As I've been raiding the site (since it's back up), I've noticed that I get error messages when: I try to view individual armors, domains, skills, spells & powers, weapons, portals in the PS3e section. I also get error messages in Snail Outfitters. Most of the site's working well, though, and we're glad to see it back. :D

Btw, you all know you're invited to my message boards, right? I've really been impressed with the level of thought expressed here (and on Planewalker, and Shemeska's Storyhour, etc.) and I've enjoyed everyone's input. My Planescape section is haunted pretty much by just me right now.

I got the forum code talking politely to the database again today so the basic functionality of looking at posts and such is done. So, best estimate is the forums are about halfway through what they need to be before I can put them back up safely - and I have a weekend halfway free (depending on how distracting Shemmy is). ;)
