Hi there,

The OpenSource Living Greyhawk Campaign Setting talks about the Iron League, the Scarlet Brotherhood and the Suel Imperium. I was wondering if I could find any free information on this, and perhaps in what source books these are covered? Any information or short description is welcome.

RPGNow has all of the out-of-print sourcebooks and modules as PDFs, and each sells for $5. The Scarlet Brotherhood sourcebook is there, too.

OK - in a nut shell:

The Iron League - a military and economic alliance of former vassal states of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy against the tyrannical rule of Aerdy and its overkings. Founded in 447 CY by the Free City of Irongate, the Free State of Onnwal, the County of Idee and the dwarf Kingdom of the Iron Hills. Joined in 448 CY by the Lords of the Isles and later by the County of Sunndi. Weaked during the Greyhawk Wars by the loss of Onnwal, the Isles and Idee to the Scarlet Brotherhood in 583/4 CY. Onnwal is now largely free of the Brotherhood, while Idee was liberated by Ahlissa and is now a part of the United Kingdom of Ahlissa (Principality of Naerie). The Isles remain a puppet state of the Brotherhood

The Suel Imperium: The ancient empire of the Suel people located in what is now the Sea of Dust. Said to have existed for roughly 5 milennia, and reputed to have had access to powerful magic and lore, the Imperium was also said to have grown decadent and cruel in its latter years. It met its end about a thousand years ago in the Rain of Colourless Fire, which burnt the Imperium to dust and ash (creating the Sea of Dust in the process). The Rain was sent by the Hierarchs of the Bakluni Empire in retaliation for the Invoked Devestation unleashed by the Suel Mages of Power to destroy the Bakluni and all their works. The Bakluni and the Suel had been locked in a dreadful war of attrition for decades prior to their act of mutual destruction.

The Scarlet Brotherhood (the Brotherhood of the Scarlet Sign): A secretive society devoted to the preservation of the Suel race, culture and the restoration of the ancient Suel Imperium. It's core philosophy is that the Suel people are superior to all others and so deserve to rule the Flanaess (if not the world). Founded before the fall of the Suel Imperium, it's core members fled the Rain of Colourless Fire and set up a new base in the Tilvanot Peninsula, where they took control and fostered a secretive state of Suel refugees, called Shar, based on their ideals of "purity".
The Brotherhood began to openly deal with the rest of the Flanaess aoubt the year 576 CY, as its agents began to infiltrate the courts and realms of the Flanaess. Their tactic in this time was to gain influence and control over other nations by espionage and assassination. During the Greyhawk Wars, they revealed their hand, gaining control of the Lordship of the Isles, the Hold of the Sea Princes, Idee and Onnwal in a serious of coups/invasions. Their fortunes have suffered a series of set backs since the Wars, losing Onnwal and the Hold to rebellions, and Idee to Ahlissa. They continue to be widely feared and hated.

I was wondering if I could find any free information on this, and perhaps in what source books these are covered?

Lessee. The nations of the Iron League are all detailed in the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, and in the original World of Greyhawk boxed set.

The Iron Leagues is/was an alliance of nations including the Free City of Irongate, Idee, Onnwal, Sunndi, and possibly the Lordship of the Isles. It was founded after the Turmoil Between Crowns in Common Year 437 (over 150 years before the present setting), when the fiend-worshipping House of Naelax gained control over the Great Kingdom of Aerdy, and a number its southern provinces seceded from the empire in protest.

For more, google the names of any of the composite nation states, or keywords like Iron Leage Aerdy.

The Scarlet Brotherhood is a nation/empire that manages to be reclusive, secretive, xenophobic, militaristic, and expansionist all at once. It's ruled by an order of monks, rogues, and assassins from a plateau on a penninsula in the far Southeast. The Scarlet Brotherhood accessory is the most complete source on them and their empire.

It traces its descent back to the Suel Imperium, an empire that's been dead for over a thousand years, turned to a sea of dust by the Rain of Colorless Fire. The Suel Imperium is remembered as despotic, racist, decadent, and cruel, with magic and military might unfathomable in the present day. They created a number of slave races, including derro, skulks, dopplegangers, and jermalaines. They fought a terrible war with the Baklunish Caliphate to their north, and both lands utterly annihilated one another in the ensuing conflageration, prompting the great Migrations that populated the modern Flanaess with Suel, Oerids, and some Baklunish. There are no in-depth resources on the ancient Suel empire because it hasn't existed in a millennium. It should probably be left an enigma in any case.

Just as a note to everyone, posting exerpts from Jason Zavoda's index might be more useful to the uninitiated if you included a key to the abbreviations.
