Question from Ravenloft Sorcerer

I'm new to Ravenloft and playing an outlander 8th level sorcerer. The only RL book I have is the RL 3.5 player handbook.
My DM said that as I level up in RL, I can choose from RL spells (as opposed to being limited to spells in the core player handbook.) So I looked in the RL player handbook, and it only has a handful of spells. Maybe 10 or so? That seems really lame. What's up with that? Maybe I'm missing something...

Anyway, what book should I buy that will have a list of spells specific to Ravenloft? I'm interested in buying just one book, maybe 2 tops. I just want a fairly decent selection of spells to choose from for my money. I feel a bit cheated that my $35 player handbook only has 3 pages of spells...

Thanks for any advice. Thanks for listening to my complaints!!

VanRichten's Arsenal has some spells and assorted magic feats (in addition to being a decent book) but really spells are scattered throughout.
If you really want spells you'd be better off w/ WotC or 3rd party d20 books.

Someone has kindly compiled a list of the Ravenloft spells from 3rd/3.5 edition over at the FoS. Go to: http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Wine_cellar.html
and click on Ravenloft Spell List. That should point you in the right direction as for what book to buy, if any strike your fancy.

(but don't go poking around that site too much without your DM's permission! Might spoil some of the surprises he has in store.)

Frankly, there aren't a lot of great RL specific spell at all. Pity. A good tome of forbbidden magicks collecting all the various spells and adding new ones might have been a popular book.

Let's remember that magic is seen by most 'locals' in RL as a dark and evil force best left alone. Heck, they still burn magic-users at the stake in some domains! Not to mention that magic-using darklords don't look kindly on the 'competition'...

So, while there are spells and spellcasters, the latter tend to be reclusive individuals who don't particularly care about sharing their spells with any passer-by (either for fear of what one could do to them or of seeing their own spells turned against them). Ergo, not many new spells.
