As per usual my gaming group has placed the responsability of DMing upon me so I began to create a campaign. I recently picked up Lords of Madness, Looking thru I realized I wanted to create a campaign based around the Illithids(something Ive wanted to do since the Illithiad, but never got around to). With the rules in the MM,FF,XPH,BoVD and LoM(as well as other books, I just mentioned the ones I plan on using most often) and also old edition books for flavor. I downloaded the WE of LoM to find another adventure(im not a big fan of adventure WEs) but reluctantly read thru it....and in all honestly love it.So im planning on using this WE as a springboard for an Epic Spelljammer campaing. At the end of the WE adventure the PCs are left on a Nautiloid with there only way back home a portal on the ship. During battle for control of the ship the portal is destroyed and the navigation system malfunctions sending the crashing ship away from the Illithid city and into the barrens. In this place the PCs only real clue of how to get home lies in the Illithid city, although attacking the city normally would be suicide. The PCs are eventualy aproached by some yet to be picked creature(actually a thrall).
The PCs are lead to a hidden cave complex where the PCs are met with the proposition of an Alhoon(who happens to command quite a few Illithid Vampires). The Alhoon agrees to help the PCs into the city(the Alhoon was cast out and sees the PCs as an opportunity to in the least rid himself of the PCs, in the most to exact revenge upon the city without his presence being known in the picture). My next step is to create an Illithid City(something im going to love doing). Not sure yet about the specifics of the city but by the end I want the PCs to face an Ulitharid Psion then finally the Elder Brain, With the possability of a Neothelid right before leaving this "alien" world. As for the use of the Spelljammer ships I was thinking about having the PCs find a special captive somewhere in the city, im not sure what race I want to make it but I was leaning twords a Neogi. The Neogi teaches the PCs to fly the Spelljammers. This leads my Epic Spelljammer campaign referance earlier. I believe the Neogi would be good because this would lend another drawing point to the story, the PCs can begin working with the Neogi(as much as you can anyways), they can become enemies with them, or just not involve themselves with any Neogi other than the one first found. I think the idea of a group of adventures on a Spelljammer trying to get home while being pursued by remaining Illithid and possably being manipulated by the Neogi is cool and will be fun to work with. As for the world that this all takes place upon I assume I'll either add Far Realm qualities or create a with a sorta scortched sun kinda things, total darkness and soforth.

So here I ask two things, first is about the idea I have so far, I would like peoples opinions/takes upon it, any input is appreciated. Secondly I have never actually DMed a Spelljammer game, most of the things seem like they can be handled quite easily. The only thing im concerned about is ship to ship combat. If anyone could point me in the direction of a good system I would be quite happy. Thanks you for reading this, I appologise for the length of my post but I was trying to describe my idea in detail without getting into too much detail.....a hard thing for me to do I must say, anyhoo, thanks again....and remember brains taste good :D

If anyone remembers star control 2, I'm a huge fan and nobody in my gaming group ever played it, so I once had an idea of remaking it into a spelljammer campaign, but replace the ur-quan kzer-ah with illithid and other races with some dnd races. But I'm still looking for a real good d20 ship-to-ship combat system. Someone reccomended bastion press airships but I don't know where to find it in this so-called country where I live

Heh, well now that I'm done with Hackjammer, Static is starting to crack the whip, so I'll be really getting things going

As far as the illithid campaign goes, it sounds cool. You might want to mix things up a bit, include some gith races (Pirates of, Githyanki, Githzeri) as both allies & enemies (maybe at the same time!) I'd also suggest even having the illithids having a problem with those worm critters from Lords of Madness (portals to the Far Realm & all) & might use the PCs to help deal with the problem. Another idea might be to include the Puslions from Dark Sun/Planescape (worm-like critters with powerful psion abilities). That way your PCs don't get bored fighting illithids constantly!

Thanks for the response guys. Anyways, Ive been juggling the idea of using the Gith in this campaign, Ive always liked them and they fit in well being that they have such a close relationship to the Illithids. I'll probably end up using them more later, seeing as how I want the Illithid world itself to seem as "alien" and "off" as I can(im planning on making most of the Illithids thralls either have the Pseudonatural or Half-Farspawn templates to give them more shock/weird value). Having the Gith(being a more humanoid looking races) would somewhat detract from this, so I'll probably use them later on once they get the Spelljammer working and set off on their way home.

What worm critters are you refering to? The Tsochar? Ive never really thought about that idea. In all honesty I didnt really like the section on the Tsochar as much as the other sections in LoM and probably wont be using these creatures in my game.

As for the Puslions im not so sure, where may I find the stats for these critters, I would love to look into it. I know what you mean about the variety of creatures the PCs will be fighting, I was debating throwing in some Psurlons into the campaign and possably critters from the XPH.

Im glad you replied Nightdruid because I was browsing your site(A+ material by the way) and I came upon the planet you made "Myser". This seemed like a good starting point to build my planet off of, I'll probably just add some odd properties that manifest every so often(rain falling upwards, mutating terrain, things like that just to make the place seem "off") and start building my Illithid city. After reading the description of "Myser" I liked the whole idea of Aboleth working out of this planet as well and am more than likely going to use this. This will not only add more to where I can go with the story but it will also help fill that void of non-Illithid monsters. Nothing like another alien super-intelligence to pit the PCs against. This also gives me another good use for LoM.

All of this is....of course.......if I have permission to use your premade creation and modify it to my own whim hehe :D

Gith: Just mentioned them as a possibilty. Afterall, where there's illithids, there's a good chance there are gith lurking in the shadows

Tsochar: Yup, that's them. I wasn't all that impressed by the entry, either. Still thought they might be useful for a side quest or two.

Psurlons: I KNOW I've seen their ugly mug in some 3e product somewhere. (Checks art galleries) Ah, there they are, MM II.

Myser: Sounds great! MotMs are there to be used & abused by anyone. Basically, I see them as places to either dump as a side-trek, or heck, even used as a building block to build your own campaign. If I didn't want anyone to use it, I wouldn't post it Definately glad you can use it for your game!

And thanks for the kind words! Always encourages me to write more!

Finally got to start the campaign and I must say im having a lot of fun. Due to work schedule restritions(on me and the players) we had to cut the game shorter than we would normally do. The PCs had just reached the Nautiloid and its quite fun to see the PCs so confused as to whats really going on(being that they have never played or even heard of spelljammer). This game is even more fun because the PCs(who have become used to playing evil characters in campaigns) are playing good characters, and there playing classes most of them dont often use. The party is as follows:

LG Half-Elf Paladin(this character usually plays fighters)
N Gnome Druid(this character is often plays rangers/monks)
LG Dwarf Monk(this character is almost always a rogue)
CG Dromite Psion[Kineticist](this character is often a cleric)

Anyways, this is somewhat a completely irrelivent post, just an update, more will come when the campaign plays out :D

hmmm, now this is interesting. The similarities between you proposed campaign and the one i'm currently running are striking. my players had never heard of spelljammer either. They are all playing character types they don't normally play, and they just landed on an Illithid controlled space station in an attempt to destroy it. Very odd indeed.

Good luck to you, i hope all goes well. And as a side note, if you read the Concordance of Arcane space they talk about what happens when you throw something overboard on a spelljammer. USE THAT, y players just couldn't quite wrap theit heads around what fantasy space was like until i used that analogy, then it was all like CLICK, "I get it" So yeah, if they don't understand throw fruit at them until they do
