A sudden thought which hit me.

Substances from the Nightmare dimension and their normal equivalent are antithetical to each other.

Perhaps certain Blackmoorian techologies somehow used dimensional portals to the Nightmare Dimension in order to use some sort of Normal/Nightmare reaction to provide the power for their machines.

The Great Rain of Fire happens when one of these portals malfunctions and the reaction grows out of control, spewing huge amounts of Nightmare earth/fire/water/air across Mystara. (Mixed with out of control normal elements too)

If one goes by the 'Blackmoor now = Northpole', the Immortals may well have created the North Pole polar hole in part to get rid of the worst Nightmare Dimension taint, which would have been at ground zero.

I loved this idea, I'd surely use it while DMing, since it, at the same time, keep Blackmoor as a high-tech empire, but also add a fantasy, magic element to it. :)

I am uneasy about this, but I think the Blackmoor/Blackflame connection is interesting.

This whole linking the Blackflame to some dark force makes me think of an interesting parallell to the Lord of the Rings, where again a Halfling is in posession of powerful magic that hides a terrible secret...
