Inspired by another tread about the old D&D movies and a possible Dragonlance movie, I thought up a question for you:

If there were to be made a movie set in Mystara, which actors would you like to see play the roles of the major NPC's in the setting?

Oh, I remember this kind of thread coming up ages ago ;)
A couple answers were Rutger Hauer as Emperor Thincol, and Sigourney Weaver as Empress Eriadna.
They still look as good choices, IMO.

Cool thread idea Jesper :-)

I would have liked to see a movie revolving around Karameikos and perhaps the events from the Basic adventure with Aleena and Bargle:

The Unnamed Hero: Hugh Jackman
Bargle: Johny Depp (unusual choice I'm sure)
Aleena: Sara Michelle Gellar
Aniella Halaran: Sara doesn't have a twin sister does she?
King Stefan Karameikos: Brian Blessed
Bishop Halaran: Sean Connery
The Black Eagle:Gary Oldman
Sascia of Luln:Kate Beckinsdale

Would make for a good team I think!

I don't really know. None of the Mystaran NPCs came across as very strong characters for a film, imho. A Mystara film should be about adventurers after all, right?

I think the X1: The Isle of Dread would make a great film, or maybe an even better computer game.

Anyway, I'm not really adding much to the mix here so I'll shut up.

Maybe we should reverse this. Famous actor <-> Mystaran NPC. I think it would be easier to do. I was thinking that Patrick Stewart would be a good Emperor Thincol or perhaps Corwyn Mauntea.

Johny Depp as Bargle somehow fits for me. I think he would like and make the role his own.

Who would be the Master of the Desert Nomads? Sean Connery? He played Mulay Achmed Mohammed el-Raisuli the Magnificent in The Wind and the Lion (1975) but I remember not being so conveinced that he was the right man for the role.

I think the d'Ambrevilles would make the perfect film. While it would probably be best to have, for the most part, a cast of unknown French or Quebecois, here's my Hollywood casting:
Camille: Gena Rowlands
Marie-Hélène: Joanna Gleason
Richard: Sean Bean
Isidore: Julianne Moore
Etienne: Bernard Hill
Geneviève de Sephora: Lucy Lawless
Catharine: Kathy Najimy
Magdalène: Neve Campbell
Henri: Mandy Patinkin
Gaston: Christopher Gorham
Guillaume: Val Kilmer
Janette: Sara Rue
Jean-Louis: Gary Stretch
Claude: Clive Owen
Monique: Selma Blair

How could we work Christopher Walken into this movie? I think he could work as a crime boss of some type- maybe in Minrothad or Darokin...

That could work...

My initial thought for Chris Walken is Noumena, although someone a bit more Egyptian-looking might be more appropriate.

How about Brannart McGregor? I don't necessarily see him as Christopher Walken, but casting a Brannart would be exceedingly difficult, I think, and Walken is one of the few actors who I think could pull off his creepiness.

Thanks guys, I like all of your ideas but the one that fascinated me the most was Gary Oldman as the Black Eagle Baron. That, IMHO, is just brilliant!!

I'd like to see Glen Close as the old, withering empress of Thyatis (AC 1000) and of course Sir Ian Holm as one of the Five Shires' sheriffs. Arnold Schwarzenegger would be fun as an old Norwoldian barbarian chief and I'd love to see John Cleese from Monty Python as a befuddled old mage somewhere.

When I saw it I was convinced it was set in the Realms. Thay is mentioned, as is Obad Hai and one other D&D deity...

Thay's FR, Obad-hai's Greyhawk. The only conclusion: It's set in D&D. ;) (And again, the screenwriters had absolutely no interest in D&D.)

I thought Obad Hai was in both settings. I know GH and the FR share alot of deities... Maybe not.
I'll have to see it again to check if there are more clues to which setting it really is supposed to be in. This movie may not have been particularly good, but it was waay better than the first one. And decent considering its low budget.

I'm GLAD Jeremy wasn't in this one.

I think the X4/X5/X10 series would be the way to go with a Mystara movie... though not the way things went in WotI.

A trilogy, definitely. First movie focuses on fighting evil in Karameikos, the characters become minor heroes and come to the attention of Duke Stefan. Second movie focuses on building up the characters more and forging alliances across the Known World, with some minor battles. Third and final movie is the Last Battle, a combo between massive battles in Darokin and the characters going to Hule to take out The Master. Yeah, it sounds a lot like LotR... eh... but it works.

Epic scale, lots of potential characters, plenty of travel around the Known World. More like doing a movie based on the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, the war in which Sauron was first cast down after the fall of Numenor at the end of the Second Age in Middle Earth.

This trilogy would be in current, 1000 AC setting.

The main characters would all be young unknowns... which lets the movie focus on the characters rather than the actors.

Christopher Lee as Hosadus... give him some really good lines. He was soooo wasted in Star Wars and could have been so much more as Saruman in LotR...

I like Gary Oldman as the Black Eagle... excellent choice.

Billy Drago as Count Heinrich Oesterhaus.

Alan Rickman as Bargle. He never really gets to be truly evil with Snape (well, not yet, anyway), and could pull off Bargle quite nicely I think.

Jason Isaacs as Jagger von Drachenfels. I'm sure he could pull off the accent...

Sir Ian McKellen as Etienne d'Ambreville.

The problem with Duke Stefan is he's early 50's and redheaded... hmmm...

Cool thread...

Listen, the movie to be made would be from X11 - Saga of the Shadow Lord. You need a compelling villain and plot, otherwise your heros can't develop and we won't care about the movie. That is why most Fantasy RPG-setting movies failed miserably until LotR. LotR gave us a story and characters, with the magic in the background as "local color." Most of the other D&D based movies were mired in "look at this fantasy world we live in" and no plot substance. The Shadow Lord could provide that plot and cool villain need.

The only problem I see with an X11 movie is that is is almost *too* similar to the Lord of the Rings movies. The Tolkienesque feel of that module is on high alert.

If we're talking modules that would make for good Mystara movies, offhand, the best ones I can think of would be B3: Rahasia, B6: The Veiled Society, B10: Night's Dark Terror, X3: The Curse of Xanathon, X4/5/10: The Master of the Desert Nomads series, and X12: Skarda's Mirror.

B6 and X12, in particular, could be very cinematic. The Master of the Desert Nomads series might make an interesting trilogy, and it's got the epic villain you mention.

I also think X2: Castle Amber might make for an interesting movie, but it would have to be reworked quite a bit.

THE FIEND IN THE MIRROR

A mysterious force ravages the nation of Karameikos.

Across the land, whole villages are found looted and destroyed, with no survivors to be found. All of Duke Stefan's attempts to locate the source of this plague meet with failure; his trusted advisor Master Teldon senses ancient, eldritch wizardry at play.

Lord Retameron Antonic and his wife, Halia, would like nothing more than to enjoy their retirement from the adventuring life. Unfortunately, even their quiet and distant village of Verge is not safe from the woes of the nation.

What connection is there between the Antonics and the destruction that reigns in Karameikos? What shadows of their past life will come back to haunt them? And what does it all have to do with the mirror in their attic?

The answers will forever change the face of a nation!

Starring:

Sean Bean as Duke Stefan Karameikos III

I really like your thoughts- you nailed a lot of these on the head, I think, with your choices.

Two things, though- first, Sara Rue is a *lot* skinnier now than she once was. She looks really good (though verging on too skinny), but in a strange way, she's also not quite as attractive as she once was. Hotter, but not as genuinely pretty, if you know what I mean.

Number two- You forgot Isabelle and Simon! Simon, I can understand (those darn clerics don't belong in Glantri!), but 'belle?

I guess I haven't seen Sara Rue in a while... not since The Ring, I think. And her turn on "Zoe, Duncan, Jack, & Jane" had me convinced that she'd make the perfect ogress--oh, well ;)

I just couldn't come up with anyone for Isabelle or Simon (or Charles, for that matter). I suppose Isabelle could be played by Leelee Sobieski...

I was re-watching Kill Bill, vol. 1 today, and I realized that Julie Dreyfuss would be perfect for Magdalène or Monique, and the accent's even genuine!

I have to agree that The Veiled Society seems like a very compelling choice for film treatments: I don't remember X12 well enough to comment. "The Lost Seneschal" from PC1 has promise as well, as does Night of the Vampire.

It's a shame we still don't have more quality fantasy films to work from: it's hard not to replicate the cast that Peter Jackson assembled I think there are easily twenty different roles in Mystara perfect for Sean Bean...

Not only can we think about movies, but what about tv show or miniseries? I think "The Heroes of the Princess Ark" would make the ideal choice!

Haldemar: Tom Cruise? Sean Penn? He's a tough one...
Abovombe: Shohreh Aghdashloo
Ashari: Emma Caulfield?
Leo: Richard Griffiths (digitally shrunk)
Myojo: anyone you'd like
Nyanga: Michael Clarke Duncan
Raman: I'm stumped...
Ramissur: Another tough one...
Xerdon: Wentworth Miller

Haldemar's supposed to be 53 (or 51- though Bruce's math was either off or he got Haldemar's birthdate wrong), and he doesn't seem to use potions of longevity.

Kevin Costner or Harrison Ford, maybe?

I'm thinking of going the way of Star Trek, 10 (11th in pre-production, according to IMDb) movies and 5 series... But lets start slow...

TV series: Princess Ark, or episodic modules with the default adventuring party revealed in the 83 basic box (Fleetwood, Clarion, Felonius, etc...[who is, IMC, the default "iconic" party.)

Movies (in Order): B6, B10, X4,5,10 or WotI.. Maybe X4,5, WotI, 10?

Cast would include Sean Connery, Patrick Stewart, ***James Earl Jones***, and Bruce would HAVE to have a cameo...
