Something I just noticed about Emerondians

Been rereading the Voyage of the Princess Ark articles over the last couple of days, and am up to episode 13, where the PA encounters the Kingdom of Emerond.

I always remembered these guys as being naturally green, but there is a line in Haldemar's log where he notes that "[t]he Emerondians' skin color comes from vegetable dyes."

Now, I'm wondering how this works- do they ingest the dyes, and thus their skin changes color, or do they simply apply the dyes directly to their skin, like an ointment? In either case, do they have to have multiple applications, or do the dyes permanently change their skin color?

On another note- if they aren't naturally green, then they are probably a human race of some sort, but what is their origin? It mentions that they have silver hair- is that natural, or a byproduct of their dyes as well? If natural, then perhaps they are related to the Albarendi of Ierendi- the albinos- but without the poor eyesight.

This bears some further thought.

Interesting discovery! I had never noticed that either, and simply assumed that they were naturally green skinned. My first guess would be that their skin is colored through vegetable based ointments. However, I also really like the idea of coloring their skin through digesting vegetables with special attributes. The Emerondians are known to be able to manipulate other elements of nature, like their giant inspect mounts, so perhaps their food has also been magically altered to produce this effect?

Does the article say anything about the reason for this coloring? Is it to separate themselves from others, preserving their own identity? Perhaps as a reminder that they are in fact not from this world?

On another note- if they aren't naturally green, then they are probably a human race of some sort, but what is their origin? The silver hair could also be a byproduct of the dyes, especially if the dyes are indigested. However, the article IIRC clearly states that the Emerondians are from space, being descendants from the Pyrithian pirates of the Asteroid Belt. James Mishler linked them to the population of Epsilon Eridani, who was contacted by the people of Blackmoor in his Epic Timeline.

The one issue this really raises is the problem with Kayvid's theory of the Gren: That the crew of the FSS Beagle and the Emerondians are of the same race. That is unless, the people of the Beagle also were not naturally green skinned....

Thoughts?

All this time I assumed it was natural. Huh, I still like it to be natural, but maybe they have a special plant from their former home that when eaten turns your skin green and your hair silver after a time. Something they do while in their youth. This would mean that the people from the Beagle are the same race as the Emerondians. After coming to Mystara the Emerondians cultivated a crop of this alien plant and they eat it while they are young as a passing to adulthood ritual that is repeated till the shade of green is acceptable.
