I pretty much just returned to D&D after a long absence. I am planning on putting my party through the paces with the original Ravenloft module. Since the players are using 3rd edition rules I figured I would just convert it "real quick".

Imagine my surprise to find out green slimes are no longer monsters, every Vampire out there now has class levels, and Banshee (how do you pluralize that) are mega monsters (Strahd from the module would have a little trouble with a full Banshee - well if he could be ability drained).

So since I want to keep pretty much to the module I have recreated my own Groaning spirit. Since I only have the core rules to go with (though I did get to glance at a MMII) please help me to keep it tailored to the Modules level range (5-7).

The groaning spirit, is the spirit of an evil female elf -- a very rare thing indeed. Groaning spirits hate the living, finding their presence painful, and seek to harm whomever they meet. Groaning spirits appear as floating, luminous phantasms of their former selves. Their image glows brightly at night, but require a successful spot check (DC 15) during the day. Most groaning spirits are old and withered, but a few (10%) who died young retain their former beauty. The hair of a groaning spirit is wild and unkempt. Her dress is usually tattered rags. Her face is a mask of pain and anguish, but hatred and ire burns brightly in her eyes. Groaning spirits frequently cry out in pain -- hence their name.

COMBAT

Groaning spirits are formidable opponents. The mere sight of one causes those around it to wither in fear, unless a successful Fortitude check (DC 20) is rolled. Those who fail lose a single point of Strength, Dexterity and Constitution permanently. Once a creature makes its check, whether success or failure, it becomes immune to this effect from that spirit .
A spirit's most dreaded weapon is its wail or keen. Any creature within 15 feet of a groaning spirit, or within a 30' cone (spirits choice) when she keens must roll a Fortitude check (DC 20). Those who fail and are 6 HD and under die immediately, their faces contorted in horror. Those above 6 HD make a second check (DC 26) failure on this roll means the creature dies, success means the creature survives but permanently loses 1d4 charisma points. The spirit can only affect 12 creatures with her wail. Fortunately, groaning spirits can keen just once per day, and then only at night. The touch of a groaning spirit causes 1d6 points of damage.

I don't want to overpower it, but I also don't want to eviscerate it. BTW no one in the party is going to be 5th level. They are creating 7th level characters for this adventure - I am even letting them use Savage Species - I have everything scalable if they start walking though to easily.

P.S. Yeah, I just found out on Friday that Dragon Magazine had done a revisit early last year, I've ordered the issue but it will be a few days.
