Scrying upon my enemies

Hail, people. Long time no talk.

I'm playing a lawful evil cleric of Takhisis named Durham on user Burger's evil War of the Lance campaign. I believe he even posted some questions about the course of events on his evil campaign here sometime ago. I must say this campaign is going extremely well.

In our story, several weeks ago I failed in retrieving the Blue Crystal Staff of Mishakal, which was in Goldmoon's power. Me and some hobgoblin muscle managed to defeat Riverwind and capture him alive, but after that we were in quite a bad shape, so Goldmoon used the Staff to knock me down and disappear in thin air. Marak the hobgoblin was already down, and there was nothing we could do. I was level 6 back then.

Back in that assignment, Marak accidentally killed Riverwind in a "fight" (Riverwind was tied up) because he wanted to prove to me that he could torture him whenever he wanted, while our orders were to take him to Highlord Verminaard intact. Marak then disappeared to escape Verminaard's wrath.

Now I'm level 9, and I managed to track Marak down with the help of the "Scrying" spell and bring him to justice, which gave me an idea: maybe I could scry upon Goldmoon. Last time I saw her, she had something I wanted, and something I still want. I don't have any possessions or pictures of her, let alone a lock of her hair or anything like it. *But* I have something very close to that: the rotting corpse of her lover, Riverwind. It must be buried somewhere near Pax Tharkas.

Here's my question. Me having a picture, possession or piece of her hair would give her penalties in her saving throw. Do you think she should have a penalty for me having the corpse of Riverwind with me (or parts of it)? How much?

Part of it depends if she knows that RiverWind is alive or Dead. If she thinks he is still alive, her heart will always be on him to a point. If she knows he is dead, it seems harder to do.

I would make it hard to do, you might have to cast the spell while in Que=Shu, if only that maybe down there, you will have a better resonance with her, perhaps. But if Mishakall is with her by then, it will be harder if she is busy covering her trail.

Although I think she'll always love and have strong bonds with Riverwind even if he's dead, your concept makes perfect sense. In this case, she might know Riverwind is dead, but as far as I'm concerned, she could only be completely sure by magical means. All she does know is that he fell in battle while protecting her, but I effectively captured him alive (he died one or two weeks later).

Making sure the spell is used in Que-shu will boost the roleplay here, nice going.

I'd like to see more ideas.

Can't remember the magical properties of the Blue Crystal Staff, but I think it would negate any scrying magic used against the wielder (ala the Ring of Sargonnas that Faros wears in the "Tides of Blood" trilogy).

Were I the DM in your game I don't think I'd make it that easy for you to locate her and the staff. However, if your DM does, I'd say that simply using a component from a husband/lover wouldn't be a sufficient substitute for the real deal; you would suffer major penalties IMO.

Just my opinion on that.

That I honestly have no idea about. Burger (the DM) surely knows exactly what the Staff does, and I can only find that out by trial and error.

Either way she can run but can't hide forever muohohoho ;)
