please bear with me as this was several yrs ago in a sphere far, far away....

i was the DM and the whole thing started in the realms. i was using a sort hybrid realms that used some stuff from my own mind as well as the 2nd ed published material. The group was in the double digits as far as levels went, everyone was at leat 10th or higher. It was a fairly good mixed bag of races and classes with all of the major character types being present either by PCs or NPCs or hired help/henchmen.
After killing the evil cleric and most of his followers, the Party went about sorting through the treasure they had found. the magic user PC decided to check out the rather plain looking chair that was set next to the altar, as the evil cleric seemed to be trying too protect this out of place object(all the other items in the room were either finely carved, ornate, or made of some type of coin-gold, silver etc). the MU decided to cast detect magic on the chair and was surprised to see that it was magical. They also found several non magical scrolls with detailed info on strange unheard of bipedal races and some sort of astrological charts with the movements of solar bodies figured out.
Several weeks later, after spending lots of coin on sages and magical spells, they had figured out that the plain looking chair was going to be used as a helm for a spelljamming ship that was going to take the evil cleric to to his god(it was written that way in the clerics journal, yes, he was insane).

They traveled to Scardale from Cormyr, thinking that it was samller and wouldnt attract so much attention to have a ship leave and never come back. They hired a good looking, sturdy ship for a voyage with just passengers and thier supplies and headed out to sea. Two days after land had disappeared, they performed the actions needed to mount the helm into/onto the ship and proceded to do some minor test "flights". this angered the captain greatly and upset most of the crew. After calming the captian down and explaining the magical "experiments" they were conducting, things went smoothly for the rest of that day and several test flights were done to get the crew used to helping move the ship. That night, the thief in the group visited the captian and took care of that problem. The first mate was given the choice of becoming co-captain with the groups strongest fighter or follow the former captian, he choose to live.
The next day, they took off for real and headed out into realmspace.
