Whatever happened to the Pyreen and were theyt ever statted out in any DS books? I've got a few of the PDFs and they are barely mentioned except for Rajaat in the revised books before the line was canned.

They (Athas.org) is holding the Pyreen in reserve and they will be released with the Epic rules along with several others like the Nightmare Beast.

Pyreen where featured in a few adventures and their stats, as well as some back ground, are in the original Dark Sun Monstrous compendium for 2nd edition. The revised 2nd edition DS campaign setting and the DS timeline also have some information on pyreen.

Most of this stuff it is still valid regargless of edition, though stats will need conversion, of course.

Nightmare Beast, really!? Where was that said?

It came up in the thread where I previewed some of the conversion work I have been doing on the nightmare beast. The idea was that the (supposedly) 6 remaining nightmare beasts would each be unique, with varying CRs, with the lowest at about CR 18 and the others scaling up into epic levels (the most powerful one, currently named "Fat Albert", is set at around CR 135, is a quarter of a mile long and can shoot laser beams out of his eyes).

Six nightmare beasts only? (I'd like for an actual species to exist, not specimens.) I feel the urge to strangle...must...resist...Kamelion...friend...

Ok, the killing urge has passed. I now realize the Why of that low number of beasts: how can they keep up as a species if they no longer have laser-shooting penguins to eat to power their laser-shooting ability?

Well, that, and the fact that there was only a few dozen IIRC to have been created in the first place (many of which were destroyed).:P

Wait!! I seem to recall.../yes/...that that was.../its coming to me/....board fluff! Yes! Its not official! Alleluia!

;)

Serioulsy, is board-invented fluff the only source for the number of beasts in existence?

check the DS monstrous compendium entry for the Nightmare Beast and you'll read the following:
Habitat/Society: Nightmare beasts can be encountered in virtually any terrain on Athas. Fortunately, there are very few of these creatures. Some historians think that once there were as many as a hundred of these beasts roaming the world. Now there are believed to be only half a dozen remaining. >>>that's about 6 :D

Ahh, never saw that. Still, its a belief, as per what's written. You can make that number double or multiply it by 10 if you want.
