Anyone here have any ideas to roleplay a Templar? I had a player join my group at short notice and she basically gave me a PC to design. Most of my players have never played Darksun before and are based in Tyr in free year 11. Since Urik is sealed up and Nibenay and Gulg Templars are bit bit different to Urik/Balic/Tyr ones they've never experienced the good ol 2nd ed evil, corrupt, bastard Templars that existed in 2nd ed.We've played in 3 sessions so far and from info I could glean from the revised boxed set I made up a 3rd level Templar of Lalali-Puy from Gulg who the player named Skye and chose LN as an alignment. I roleplayed her a bit 1st to give the player an idea of whats happened in the DS world. Basically Skye is a wandering Templar preaching the word of the Forest Goddess who wants to convert everyone. Her "mission" is to try and convince any Druids, Clerics and Preservers to travel to Gulg and seek audience with the Queen as it seems the Veiled Alliance will be made legal in Gulg.

It was the best idea I could come up with at the time why a Templar would be wandering around. The other ideas I had were a spy for Urik/Nibenay or an agent for Ordonis of Kurn. I also built here as a bit of a healer with cure light wounds known and the augment healing feat from the complete divine as one of her feats and modeled her as a tree hugging hippie. The PCs met here after a nasty fight involving a half giant. She offered to heal them and preached something about healing the world. Maybe she is to nice or naive but I vaguely recall an almost good Urik Templar named Pavek from some DS novel I read 9-10 years ago. Just plain Pavek I think his name was- I can't even recall what book(s) he was in.

Pavek appears in Brazen Gambit, Cinnabar Shadows and Rise and Fall of a Dragon King. He is easily my favourite character in the DS novels.

Oh, I'm sure templars can be good in alignment... they just don't last long or they don't rise in ranks.

As for templars from Gulg, your idea is fine. Post-PP templars from Gulg are sent preaching to the rest of the world. I play Pre-PP so they tend to be more the type to make sure things don't change much in Gulg. In a way, they're pretty much the same as in other CS, they just look like aboriginal warriors and use the Peoples' superstitions to keep them in line. They are seen as powerful and agressive "witch doctors" and "shamans" who must be obeyed in order to keep the forest safe.

Their missions outside Gulg usually involve spying on Nibenay and searching the forest for places of power. Since the Oba controls the importations of products in Gulg, a few are also sent with the Inika caravans (with them knowing or not) to survey their dealings or to simply learn news from everywhere else. These templars tend t be more awakened to Athas' ways and monetary exchanges then most others.

BTW, I too favor Lynn Abbey's templar since he's always in conflict with his templar past and druid futur.
