I am planning to start a Dark Sun campaign soon, and I want to really recreate the feel of the setting. Unfortunately, I haven't found many details on how the world works, like descriptions of the city-states and local customs. Also, I want to find a good map of the Tablelands. Is there any place or resources that can fill me in on these things? (Preferably free).

Well, I have the darksunrising.info maps on my site, as well as most of Brian's maps. For flavor information, you might want to go to RPGNow.com (I think that's the site) and get the PDF files for 2nd Ed. AD&D Dark Sun, I think they are for $5 a pop. If you want physical copies of the materials, you probably would do best by going to eBay and seeing what's for sale there. There is some other Flavor materials up on Athas.org, but I am not certain that we have what all you are looking for. Athas.org can't reproduce the flavor text of the setting, only provide the mechanics. We could potentially (I think) rewrite all the flavor material, but I'm not entirely certain about the complete legalities of that, or if it's completely possible.

Like xloredarkhelm said, maps can be found at his site. Additionally, bigger maps are included in the original boxed sets found at www.rpgnow.com. I don't think there's any (good) way around buying some of the original AD&D stuff, I recommend the following "core" products:

  • Dark Sun Campaign Setting [original]
  • Dark Sun Revised Campaign Setting
  • Monstrous Compendiums I & II [for monster drawings, useful for flavor]
  • Veiled Alliance [nice city descriptions]
  • City-State of Tyr [the standard setting for DS campaigns]

Additionally, you might want to get the following products, depending on your setting:
  • City by the Silt Sea
  • Dune Trader [info on the powerful merchant houses]
  • Elves of Athas
  • Thri-Kreen of Athas
  • Slave Tribes
  • Ivory Triangle [details Nibenay and Gulg]

People have been working on other cities as well. Take a look at the link pages at http://www.athas.org and http://www.siltskimmer.net/ for more info on e.g. Draj and Balic. Tons of useful stuff on these link pages apart from pure flavor material, highly recommended.

I've collected a rather big bunch of photos from Earth I'm using as flavor material myself, if you're interested I can send you the lot as a zipped file (or several, depending on the max size allowed for your mail account).

DarkSoulman, I don't know about Taeldrin, but I'm interested in the real-world photos you found as flavor for DS. I have some myself, but would like to see yours.

Can you send them my way please at [email]methvezem@gmail.com[/email]? Thanks in advance. :D

How about both of you posting them somewhere? I know Methz as a Multiply address, he could host these photo there so we could have a look at?

I'll send the photos to Mehtz (roughly categorized), if he wants to host them that sounds good

I'm planning on developing a lot of flavor information on the city-states (including architecture, art, local religion, customs, etc.) that will revolve around the pre-Prism Pentad period before Kalak's death. It'll be entirely rules-free so you can insert it into whatever rules you use to play Dark Sun and it'll be heavily based in real life historical research. I just spent all of yesterday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art taking photographs and notes to help with the research, actually. I'll be putting a lot of those photos up on a Flickr account soon and I'll link them here.

Although my campaign is set 10 years after Kalak's death, that sure sounds brilliant JayL, can't wait to see the pics

You could likely use most of the material even in a setting set 10 years after Kalak's death. I just fell in love with Athas in the state it existed in the original boxed set, before many of the sorcerer-kings were killed off in the Prism Pentad, so that's what I wanted to focus on.

The first batch of the pictures from my Met trip are here. Any artists out there who may want to use the photos for manipulation or inspiration, feel free. As long as it's not for commercial use and you attribute your source (me! :D ).
