I have been working on a DM program to help make a DM's life easier when playing. This program was started about 10 years ago, and has been modified numerous times through playing sessions.

It allows NPCs (monsters) to be created and PCs to be created. It controls attacks for NPCs allowing the DM not to have to roll. It also controls the iniative, so the DM can control the combat round and does saving throws for NPCs.

When PCs attack they role the dice and the DM enters this in the system in, it works out whether it is a hit or not then the DM roles Damage then the DM enters this again.

The system supports up to 3 weopons per character, and all the modifiers associated with each weopon and stats such as hit percentage and average damage. It also tracks the kills each PC has done.

The system also supports spells for both NPCS and PCs, keeping checks on the number of spells cast each day and giving the DM a description of each spell.

The system is designed with the mouse being the major input device as through playing sessions we found this the best method. If you double click on any input box a keypad will appear for easy input and most lists and drop downs have a right click menu..

The Spells form that appears in the program I also have as a stand alone application for players to have easy access to spells on a PDA. The spells form has every spell found in all the different manuals in searchable format by level and character class.

I am thinking of releasing this as a shareware program, but first I am interested to know how many still play 2nd edition and how many people would be interested in this program - and who also own the copyright for 2nd edition ..?

My next project is do a 3rd edition version of the program ..

Not to offend but in what ways is your program different/better than the AD&D Core Rules 2.0? That's what I used back in the glory days of 2e and it pretty much covered everything already. Granted, it's not as if it was (still) freely available so having yours as a shareware would certainly help.

I haven't used that program, its quite possible it does all mine does, I developed it completely independently of anything else out there. Essentially in my program you have a main combat screen with a list of NPCs that the group is fighting and a list of PCs in the compaign. The NPC are added by going to a NPC screen where all the monsters that been entered over time are, choose the monster and the no of them appearing, and they are loaded into the combat screen. Then you jsut choose the NPC to attack or PC to attack and for NPCs it does it all for you and obviously keeps track of hit points lost and spells cast then deletes them from the combat screen when they are dead. It also sorts out initative by going to a screen at the start of each combat round, it determines the initaive rolls for NPCs and then the PCs roll thiers and the DM inputs them. Then on the combat screen you just press next attacker to find out who attacks when, and the program then sets the list box to the correct Attacker - it also remembers who they attacked last and sets the other list box accordingly.

OK, I see better now what you meant. Yours is meant to be used during play while Core Rules was more a tool to be used to prepare play.Interesting.

I wonder if it slows down or speeds up play compared to a "regular" game?

The way I have described it, it sounds abit cluncky, but we play tested it any number of times, and it really means as the DM you can get much more involved in the roll play aspects.

When I DM a game, a week before we play, I load up all the monsters in the module that do not currently exist in the system. Then when the PCs meet the monsters I just click 5 goblins and 5 appear in the combat screen (each of their hit points are generated by the system, though there is an override for a specfic hit point amount for special NPCs), using d10 iniative all the goblins rolls are automatically entered then the PCs roll theirs. The input is really simple. We play with a laptop to the left of the DM and just a mouse on the table, when you click on a character name a pop window with 1- 30 appears (in this case obviously you are only intested in 1-10) and click on the number and popup window disappears for each player. Then on the combat screen hit next attack it tells you who is first then next etc. When the PCs attack they roll the dice you enter the score in the same way and the system works out whether its a hit or not (it has an auto hit button when you know for sure that a no hits ie 20). When a NPC attacks you just click the NPC then the system does the attack roll and damage automatically, against the PCs and deducts the hit points from the PC if damage has occurred. It also works out the number of attacks for a NPC and the assoiciated damage with each attack.

It also has a PC Character detail page where stats, saving throws, spells and weopons are held - enter in a 18/55 strength then the system works out the hit and damage modifiers, incease the level and the THACO is adjusted, there are also fields like global THACO modifier so if a PC picks up a cursed magic item you can deduct -1 from the THACO and this effects all PCs attacks without them knowing.

Hi all -
Although I don't currently play 2nd Edition, I'll never shy away from software to help with the game. Espically since I still have my Core Rules 2.0 and its expansions, as well as the Dragon Mag's.
If you would like a place to host it, I'll offer a spot on www.GreyhawkOnline.com for it, and a download portal through CanonFire (although I don't do much of it anymore, it can easily be done). With GHO, you'll have a spot to direct others for mirrioring or downloading, and with CanonFire, well you have CF!
If not, I'd personally like to have a copy.
Be Well.
