Mapping Tool or Program???

I was wonderin' if anybody knows of a program that can take a flat map .jpeg or .gif and make it into a global/spherical map?

fractal mapper v7.0 can create and apply spherical maps...probably the best mapping tool out there...here's where to order...

You could also just crop half of it and "spherical distort" it using an image-manipulating program like photoimpression (which came with my scanner), and then crop a circular shape around the distorted area.

Like this:

I'm not sure how accurate it is, though.

Actually, crop somewhere between half and none of it first. Half takes away too much, considering I cut out a lot more to make it a circle. I cropped none of it and it looks like a bit too much area on one side:
