Hey all, here is the first draft of the greater psionocus. I put this together in a few hours last night and would really enjoy the community's feedback on it. The requirements are a bit different then a regular psionocus, but that is because IMO the creation requirements for the normal one need some revision.

When you read though this criter keep in mind that it is not your basic construct- while it does have some of the basic construct features, it also has and/or retains several abilities and characteristics of a psicrystal, which is used in the creation process.

Hovering in the air before you is a small, winged lizard about the size of a well fed cat. It has no forelimbs, but its rear legs end in razor sharp claws. Over half the creatures length is tail and it has a wing span of about six feet.

A greater psionocus is an artificial creature created by a psion to serve as a servant and scout. A greater psionocus’ creator determines its precise features. These constructs are extensions of their creators, sharing the same alignment and basic nature.

A greater psionocus cannot speak, but the process of creating one links it telepathically with its creator. It knows what its master knows and can convey to him or her everything it sees and hears, out to a distance of one mile. A greater psionocus never travels beyond this range willingly, though it can be removed forcibly. If this occurs, the creature does everything in its power to regain contact with its master.

An attack that destroys a greater psionocus deals 5d10 points of damage to its master. If the creature’s master is slain, the psionocus also dies, and its body swiftly melts away into a pool of ichor.

Combat

A greater psionocus attempts to avoid combat if possible. If it can’t, it attacks with its sleep-inducing bite and sharp claws.

Drain Power Points (Su): A creature that falls asleep from greater psionocus’ poison loses 3 power points per round until it awakens. If the greater psionocus and its master are within one mile, the master gains those power points, though his power point total cannot increase beyond maximum.

Poison (Ex): Injury, Fortitude DC 17, initial damage sleep for 1 minute plus drain power points, secondary damage paralysis for another 5d6 minutes plus drain power points. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +4 racial bonus.

Psi-like Abilities (Ex): When a greater psionocus is created, its master selects two first level powers that he knows and one second level. The first level powers can then be activated up to three times a day and the second level power once per day. The greater psionocus has a manifester level equal to its hit dice and the powers DC are Intelligence based. All of the greater psionocus’ powers are automatically augmented for its manifester level.

Alertness (Ex): The presence of a psicrystal sharpens its master’s senses. While a psicrystal is within arm’s reach (adjacent to or in the same square as its owner), its owner gains the Alertness feat.

Improved Evasion (Ex): If a psicrystal is subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, it takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw and half damage even if the saving throw fails.

Personality Boost (Ex): Due to the greater psionicus’ unique construction, it retained many of the abilities it had as a psicrystal. While the creator still enjoys the benefits of the personality trait embedded within the psicrystal, it has an even greater effect on the greater psionocus. As such, this construct receives double the benefit the creator gets as an inherent bonus. If the psicrystal had additional personality fragments of its creator due to feats like Improved Psicrystal, those bonuses are doubled as well.

Share Powers (Su): At the creator’s option, he can have any power (but not any psi-like ability) he manifests on himself also affect his greater psionocus. The greater psionocus must be within 5 feet of its master at the time of the manifestation to receive the benefit. If the power has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the greater psionocus if it moves farther than 5 feet away, and will not affect the creature again, even if it returns to its owner before the duration expires.

Additionally, the owner can manifest a power with a target of “You” on his greater psionocus (as a touch range power) instead of on himself. The master and greater psionocus cannot share powers if the powers normally do not affect constructs.

Telepathic Link (Su): The greater psionocus has a telepathic link with its creator out to a distance of up to 1 mile. The creator cannot see through the construct’s senses, but the two of them can communicate telepathically as if the greater psionocus were the target of a mindlink power manifested by the owner. For instance, if a greater psionocus was within a distant room, it could relay the activities occurring in that room back to its master.
Because of the telepathic link between a greater psionocus and its master, the master has the same connection to an item or place that the construct does. For instance, if a greater psionocus has seen a room, the construct’s master can teleport into that room as if he has seen it too.

Deliver Touch Powers (Su): The greater psionocus retains the ability to deliver touch powers for its creator just like a psicrystal. If the master and greater psionocus are in contact at the time the owner manifests a touch power, he can designate the creature as the “toucher.” The greater psionocus can then deliver the touch power just as the owner could. As usual, if the owner manifests another power before the touch is delivered, the touch power dissipates.

Fortified Construction (Ex): During the construction of a greater psionocus, the master pours a great deal of his strength and energy into melding his psicrystal and the physical body of the construct together. This process not only animates the creature, but it also psionically strengthens the physical body of the greater psionocus. The greater psionocus gains bonus hit points equal to its hit dice times its master Intelligence modifier at the time of construction.

Telepathic Speech (Ex): If the construct is within one mile of its master and 30 feet of any creature with a language, the greater psionocus can communicate telepathically with it.

Power Resistance (Ex): The greater psionocus gains power resistance equal to its masters level at time of creation + 5. To affect a greater psionocus with a power, another manifester must get a result on a manifester level check that equals or exceeds the greater psionocus’ power resistance.

Skills: If the personality fragment embedded within the psicrystal housed within the greater psionocus’ head is skill related, the greater psionocus treats that skill as if it were a class skill. The greater psionocus retains the skill bonuses it possessed as a psicrystal (+4 to Listen, Move Silently, Search, and Spot) and also gains a +4 to Hide checks due to its size.

Construction
A greater psionocus is shaped from a mixture of clay, ashes, mandrake root, spring water, the creator’s psicrystal and one pint of the creator’s own blood. The materials cost 13,000 Cp (not including the creator’s psicrystal). The creature’s master may assemble the body or hire someone else to do the job. Creating the body requires a DC 20 Craft (sculpting) check or a DC 20 Craft (pottery) check. The creator’s psicrystal is lodged within the head of the clay body. The psicrystal does not gain any further abilities as a psicrystal and the creator cannot craft a new one while the greater psionocus is “alive”. After the body is sculpted, it is animated through extended psionic meditation. A greater psionocus with more than 7 Hit Dice can be created, but each additional Hit Die adds +3,000 Cp to the cost to create.

Crafting Requirements: Craft Construct, Psicrystal Affinity, bestow power, body adjustment, power leech, manifester must be at least 12th level; Price — (never sold); Cost 13,000 gp + permanent loss of 12 power points + 736 XP.

Come of guys- this is a really cool idea and I would hate to see it not be the best it could be- therefore your feedback is essential.

I like it , though I don't think you can really set a challange rating on it since its powers are variable. Though I am no expert on these things, It seems pretty awesome to me.

I had been thinking that if the psion made one of these critters at higher levels with his psicrystal then I would mention or make a chart that would detail any changes and/or additional abilities and the minimum hit dice that the greater psionocus wold have along with any change in cost.

I also was thinking that the damage dealt if the greater psionocus was killed was a bit weak- I was thinking about adding negative levels with the chance of permenant loss of level. Any thoughts on that item.

I wanted to make this like a cool 'familiar' but bit stronger then a wizards familiar due to the fact that the wizard familiar is free and this construct takes several feats (four to be exact), powers, a bit of XP and PSP loss, and a significant investment for a psion to get.

Can a wizard make the greater psionocus his familiar? That way if he's also a psion the creature can double as psicrystal-holder and familiar.

That is an interesting question. IMO, and this is very debateable, yes but some of the benefits would not stack for some of the abilities- so the psion/wizard would use the highest Int natural AC increases (which is already figured in the greater psionocus' stats for a 12th level psion)- but he would be able to double dip in the fact that at higher levels his greater psionocus familiar would have both SR & PR and would be able to deliver both psionic touch and arcane touch effects and the sharing of spell/power effects would be an added bonus.

This is an interesting twist that I had not thought of so I would really love to hear what some of the other have to say too.

Indeed, some of the stuff would not stack but overlap.

I thought that one of the psionocus' functions was to allow for a wizard/psion to mix both familiar and psicrystal together?
