No, but your pics are real. The other collection of pics for athas were computer generated. I've gotta say I like the real one better :D

Heh, my collection is not definitive, and only contains - as you say - cg images since what I'm looking for is exotic terrain with a sky that isn't blue. Tall order.

The last exotic terrain I saw was in the movie The Gardener's Constance in which for a second or two we see the biplane pass over a volcanic crater...just there, in the middle of the ground, no moutains, nothing. A strange bit of geology.

Heya. Those are nice. You wouldn't happen to be able to put up some larger/higher resolution images than the "large" versions you currently have? Something that would show more detail than a 450px wide photo?

Also, who is the photographer for these?

I'm sorry penn, I'm not knocking you collection. I just don't like computer generated images as much as real or hand drawn ones. Its pretty easy for me to change the color of the sky in photoshop. :D I love photoshop.

Sorry Greyorm, these are the only ones I have.
Glad you like them though.

Seeing how those look, i now see a definitive use for photos. Most of them don't even need to be photoshoped, their sky color is already athasian!

Wow, i never thought those hollywood sandstorms were actually based on real weather.

Have you heard of caatinga?

Caatinga is a type of vegetation and an ecosystem having this vegetation mainly in the northeastern part of Brazil. The name "Caatinga" is a Tupi word meaning "white forest" or "white vegetation" (kaa = forest, vegetation, tínga = white). It covers between 700,000 km2 and 1,000,000 km2 (depending on the source), over 10% of the national territory.
Caatinga is a thorn forest, which consists primarily of small, thorny trees that shed their leaves seasonally. Cacti, thick-stemmed plants, thorny brush, and arid-adapted grasses make up the ground layer. Many annual plants grow, flower, and die during the brief rainy season.

Take a look and tell me if it doesn't feel Athasian to you:

Some more awesome pics guys.
Would you all like me to host these pics ??

Also I wondered if there's any merit in placing the names of some areas of Athas next to each pic ???

Only if they inspire you to, flindbar. Outside of that, no, there's not much merrit or need to naming pictures.
I named the pics i found only because they did invoke into me a region or terrain type i've seen in the setting or in Brian's planetary maps.

In another thread (too lazy to find it atm) I suggested that it would be a great idea to match pics with Athasian locales - you know, to make up a graphical signature for each area, like the Ringing Mountains, Crescent Forest, rocky badlands near Tyr etc. It would mean a lot of work though - but personally, I think it would be worthy of an official athas.org project.

I've used the pics I've found on the two last gaming sessions with my group, using a projector on a white wall - it worked wonders to set the tone. Even the tough guy of the group marvelled at the sight from the top of the Ringing Mountains

I have a decent collection of Athasian-like pics like the ones you put up - got around 100-200 (not sure, since I don't have them at hand at work...). If you're interested, I could mail them to you and you could pick and choose the ones you're interested in and put them up.

By mail ....... did you mean email or postal mail ??
If you email me 100 to 220 images, I think my mailbox will have an embolism !

But, I'm sure between us we can sort something out. :D
