Guys,

Looking for some input on this Athasian dwarf only PrC.

Please feel free to praise or condemn as you see fit.
OBSTINATE SOUL

“There’s nothing that one can't accomplish once they set their mind to it”
- Glabric, obstinate soul

Obstinate Souls are dwarves who take the devotion to their foci to a level above most of their kin. They are steadfast individuals dedicated to their focus and unwavering in their pursuits to complete them. Obstinate souls are respected by their fellow dwarves, and are often tasked with the most vital of undertakings.

Obstinate souls are always dwarves. Most classes find the abilities of the obstinate soul beneficial, but a majority come from a warrior background.

NPC obstinate souls can be found anywhere on Athas depending on their focus. Most work alone, but its not unusual for an obstinate soul to travel with adventures whose goals are in line with their focus.

Hit Die: 1d8

Class Skills
The obstinate soul’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (Int), Concentration (Con), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually), Listen (Wis), Profession (Wis), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), and Spot (Wis).
Table: The Obstinate Soul
Level BAB Fort Ref Will Special
1st +0 +2 +0 +2 Expanded focus
2nd +1 +3 +0 +3 Dwarven resolve +2
3rd +2 +3 +1 +3 Expanded focus

5th +3 +4 +1 +4 Expanded focus, dwarven resolve +3
Class Features
All of the following are Class Features of the obstinate soul prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Obstinate souls gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Expanded focus: At every odd level (1st, 3rd, and 5th), the obstinate soul may choose to include their focus bonus to effect one of the following:

· initiative
· armor class
· spells and/or psionic powers with variable numeric effects
· turning checks
· caster/manifester level checks
· ability checks

Dwarven resolve (Ex): Beginning at 2nd level, an obstinate soul's morale bonus on all checks related to their focus increases to +2. At 5th level, the obstinate soul’s focus morale bonus increases to a +3.

Focused probability: Starting at 4th level an obstinate soul may reroll any roll that relates to his focus. You must take the result of the reroll, even if it’s worse than the original roll. This ability is usable only once per day.

Great work Sysane!

Races-related PrC are sorely lacking in DS and now, one by one, they begins to appear.:D

Everything seems balanced to me given the requirements. Perhaps giving to more choice for the expanded focus ability would make the obstinate soul more unique as they wouldn't all have the same ability chosen at 5th level.

Thanks.

I was thinking the same about expanded focus, but couldn't come up with anything else that the morale bonus would possibly effect.

I like it. Simple, straightforward and effective. I do think that the Die Hard requirement is a bit much, though, as it doesn't really relate to the concept (being a combat feat) and requires the Endurance feat itself anyway (so you are really requiring three feats to qualify for the class). I'd replace Die Hard with Disciplined from the DS3 Core Rules (or even just lower the feat requirement to Iron Will only, depending on how you think that balances out).

A small textual question, but it seems like the first sentence of Focused Probability should read something like: Starting at 4th level an obstinate soul may reroll any attack roll, saving throw roll, ability check roll, initiative roll, skill roll, or damage roll that relates to his focus.

Other than that, good execution of a cool idea .

Some other ideas for the ability:

- caster or manifester level check
- ability check
- turning check

I like Kam idea about using the Disciplined feat instead of the Die Hard feat, it does seems more logical.

The focused probability ability should perhaps only say that: Starting at 4th level an obstinate soul may reroll any roll that relates to his focus. since with the expanded focus add more types of applicable type of roll.

Nice- I like it.

I am with Kam on the requirement thing and though the same thing to myself when I seen the feat requirements.

I also dig the expanded focus alot- but a few more options would be swell to keep the uniqueness of each dwarf- may be you could have some abilities that chain together like a +1 to AC leads to keeping said bonus even if flat-footed for example.

Some pretty good suggestions all around. I'll change the feat requirement from die hard to disciplined and the add extra abilities for expanded focus.

Thanks all

I really like the Diehard feat requirement. It seemed extremely appropriate, especailly considering how awesome the class is a nearly useless feat is a proper cost. When I saw it I was like wow, yah, they will stave off death to complete their focus, now thats devotion.

Speaking of which if you did keep it, you could build off of it as part of the expanded focus. Allowing them to keep going until they hit -20 instead of -10.

That was my original idea behind having die hard but forgot the endurance feat was a prereq for it. I'll think it over and maybe change it back.

Good work Sysane!

Now I have something to build off of for the Epic Dwarven Focus PrC I had in mind.

I wouldn't call Diehard a useless feat at all - it saved the lives of 2 characters in the last DS game that I ran. The Diehard concept as it relates to the class could well work in the specific way that you describe, though, and some kind of Diehard-like ability might be an interesting addition. My point is that it is seems a bit excessive to have a requirement of three feats for such a narrowly focussed class. If Diehard is to be part of the requirement, I'd say that the class itself needs further development - just my opinion, mind you .
