Converting K:KoA NPCs...

Hey all!

I've gone through the Karameikos: Kingdom of Adventure box set and converted most of the NPCs. Well, the ones that I use IMC. Would anyone be interested in having them posted here? I would also like to have people check them for errors (you can't convert 30+ npcs and not have errors!), as well as post alternative versions. The one rule from 3e that I have broken is I didn't increase the ability scores as per the PHB. They are 1:1 conversions. Somehow, being an old skooler, that just didn't feel right.

Here's King Stefan......

Absolutely! And speaking of alternatives, it may be nice to have a year given in case people make conversions at differing times and therefore different levels. (Maybe this is a more general thought than specific to this thread! Oh well.)

Me too! And Ditto on the year bit, though if they are taken from K:KoA I assume they are from..what...AC 1012?

BTW, I like this King Stefan conversion way better than the one done by Sean Reynolds over at pandius.com...

AC 1012 is the "current" year of K:KoA so that would be the year these NPCs are from.

Sean Reynolds? Same as Sean K Reynolds? URL? I've seen the one by Stephen Kenson.

Whoops, Stephen Kenson's one was the one I was thinking about. Appologies to mr Reynolds. Stephen Kenson's version is alright, but I like your handling of his skill list is way better.

Just a couple of observations offhand. You don't have any sort of Profession (seaman/sailor) sort of skill up there, which Stefan has in Gaz1 (and, I think, K:KoA). Maybe some sort of Knowledge (local) skill of some sort (to represent his knowledge of the laws and government) as well.

As to the feats- without some ranks in Survival, Stefan's Tracking feat isn't going to be all that useful to him. Personally, given his history with the Thyatian cavalry, I'd think he should have at least the Mounted Combat feat (if not more such feats).

I began a conversion of Stefan myself some time ago, and got most of it done (all except the skills). I actually made him an Aristocrat 10/Fighter 5, since I figured he should have some sort of levels in Aristocrat, and since he has spent more of his life as a politician rather than a warrior.

For his feat selections, I gave him Leadership, Mounted Combat, Negotiator, Ride By Attack, Spirited Charge, Track, Trample, Weapon Focus: Cavalry Saber (scimitar), Weapon Focus: Lance, and Weapon Specialization: Cavalry Saber (scimitar). Those were just preliminary, and I may end up trading some of the combat feats out for more politically oriented feats.

Weird- I was just looking at the NPC writeups in K:KoA, and am kind of confused at some of the changes they made from Gaz1. For instance, both Alfric Oderbry and Desmond Kelvin lose a level from their OD&D writeups (going from 14 to 13 and 10 to 9 respectively), while Olivia gains 3 levels from her OD&D writeup (going from 9 to 12).

As for Olivia- I swear I had a really thorough writeup of her, but I can't seem to find it at the moment- I had her, I believe, as a 9th level Aristocrat- a class in which she would be able to gain pretty much all of the relevant abilities she would have as a Thief, and enough skill points to buy some of the others (Hide, Move Silently) as cross-class skills. Come to think of it, I may have given her a level or two of Rogue just for good measure, but again, I think she is one of those characters who would best be represented by some Aristocrat levels.

I'm at work right now so I don't have access to the K:KoA. I vaguely remember that she may have had only two languages in 2e. She does qualify for a third. Should we add a language? If so, which language should be added?

IIRC - It's all because of stat bonuses OD&D/2e 16 = +2 wereas in 3.x its +3.

So, yes, a proper conversion would give her another language - what should it be?

I see three ways to handle this.... 1) add a language, 2) keep languages as listed in K:KoA, or 3) add an "Empty" TBA Language slot that DMs can change to fit their campaign. Ideas? Opinions?

I like option #3 unless there's a language that people would think that she knows because of her history (I can't think of one though).

I just took a look in both the 3.0 and 3.5 PHB and neither has a prerequisite for endurance, so your fine.
I don't blame MrFM. for thinking that though; it seems like reasonable thing and perhaps it was a house-rule in a game..

No blame placed. ...but he's also right. I reread the description of Justin. He almost died of "fever" when he was 5 and his appearance is "more like a clerk" so I dumped Endurance and Power Attack. They have been replaced with Acrobatic and Agile which I think fits a seaman much better. His skill have changed too.

....added in the class features from the Rogue and I noticed that she already had three languages, Thyatian, Traladaran, elvish (Callarii dialect), so I took out the "empty" slot.

FWIW, there is a really good spreadsheet Heroforge that automates a lot of the work of generating NPCs. Makes the process alot quicker, and not as messy when it comes to missing a few numbers.

By the way your version of Ludwig is missing three feats. He should have 13 (1 for human, 5 standard feats [1,3,6,9,12], and 7 fighter bonus feats [1,2,4,6,8,10,12]).

Hopefully I'll post Bargle tomorrow. I've upped his Int to 19 so he can cast 9th-level spells. ;)

Cool. I like that Bargle isn't the usual "evil necromancer wizard" that has become such a cliche. I find it refreshing that he favours blasting his enemies and even though he is level 17 he still carries plenty of spells to ensure his get-away. He is going to be worthy challenge for my PCs... :P

14th level from a 7th level elf seems a bit high for a conversion. I'd only convert him to around 9th level or so, myself (and the 3E project seems to agree with me here). I think a 7 Ftr/7 Wiz under 2nd Edition rules would be a more or less accurate translation, but they handled multiclassed characters differently (only a percentage of the hit points of regular classes, different saves and attacks, etc.), whereas the multiclass rules from 3E are more straightforward (and result in much more powerful characters if you convert straightforward).

Just my opinion, though.

Sure, here's the bit from the supplement.
The Vandevics won their land 100 years ago, during the Thyatian invasion. Gustav’s great-grandfather Jan Vandevic led a band of mercenaries in the service of the Thyatians, and he was rewarded with a fief. Vandevicsny is a small, out-of-the-way land, and the family is not very important. Many people forget that Vandevicsny is even part of the realm.
Personality: Gustav is an aging scholar, and a man of letters who has retreated from the society of the Karameikan nobility. The circumstances of his family’s rise to power have isolated him from the other Traladaran nobles, and the Thyatians view the Vandevics as insignificant.
Gustav spends most of his time adding to his library or engaged in scholarly work. As a young man and a student he travelled throughout Karameikos, for the last 30 years he’s stayed at home. Gustav is kind-hearted but a little timid around strangers.
Appearance: Gustav is a tall, spare man in his late 50s, with grey hair and a kind face. He makes a point of dressing formally no matter what the occasion. He has an absent-minded manner.

Sorry it's taken so long to notice this, I've only just got around to formatting it for myself.

You've got his Con as 9 (-1 modifier) but then give him a positive Con bonus for his Fort save and Hit Points.

So by my calculations his HP would be 36 (10 for 1st level, 5.5 for the next 6 levels and -7 for Con mod), and his Fort save is +4.

Anyone Sulescu targets must succeed on a Will save (DC 22) or fall instantly under Sulescu’s influence as though by a dominate person spell (caster level 12th). The ability has a range of 30 feet.
Create Spawn (Su): A human or humanoid monstrous humanoid slain by Sulescu’s Blood Drain rises as a nosferatu only if Sulescu wishes it. If so, the victim rises from the dead three days later, unless its body was burned or totally destroyed. The victim remains under its killer's control. If the latter is killed, all the victims become self-willed.
At any given time a nosferatu may have enslaved creatures totalling no more than twice its own Hit Dice; any spawn it creates that would exceed this limit are created as free-willed nosferatu. A nosferatu that is enslaved may create and enslave spawn of its own, so a master nosferatu can control a number of lesser nosferatu in this fashion. A nosferatu may voluntarily free an enslaved spawn in order to enslave a new spawn, but once freed, a nosferatu cannot be enslaved again.

Nosferatu Weaknesses
For all their power, nosferatu have a number of weaknesses, although they are less restricted than a vampire.

Blood Thirst: Nosferatu craves the blood of the living. It can go no more than a week without blood before pain begins to twist its body. The pain causes all of Nosferatu’s ability scores (ignore constitution) to drop 1 point per day after the first week of fasting, down to a minimum of 9. Nosferatu requires enough blood for 9 points of damage per week to avoid the pain. To recover each lost point of ability score due to the pain, Nosferatu requires another 1-4 Con points-worth of fresh blood. Non-human or non-humanoid blood only serves to numb the pain for a day. It cannot restore lessened ability scores.
Repelling a Nosferatu: Nosferatu cannot tolerate the strong odor of garlic and will not enter an area laced with it. Similarly, they recoil from a mirror or bright sources of light. These things don’t harm the nosferatu—they are merely things to be avoided if at all possible. Unlike a vampire, a nosferatu has no fear of a holy symbol, in fact some nosferatu are quite fond of holy symbols.
Nosferatu are also unable to cross running water, although they can be carried over it while resting in their coffins or aboard a ship.
They are utterly unable to enter a home or other building unless invited in by someone with the authority to do so. They may freely enter public places, since these are by definition open to all.
Slaying a Nosferatu: Reducing a Nosferatu’s hit points to 0 or lower incapacitates it but doesn’t always destroy it (see the note on fast healing). However, certain attacks can slay Nosferatu. Unlike a vampire, exposing any nosferatu to direct sunlight does not harm it in any way. But like a vampire, immersing it in running water robs it of one-third of its hit points each round until it is destroyed at the end of the third round of immersion. Driving a wooden stake through a Nosferatu’s heart instantly slays the monster. However, it returns to life if the stake is removed, unless the body is destroyed. If staked, a nosferatu may be permanently killed by behead the undead and stuff its mouth with dirt taken from hallowed burial grounds. The definition of "hallowed burial grounds" varies with Nosferatu's own alignment. Burial grounds must be for a kind of people or creature whose alignment is as far removed from Nosferatu's as possible. For a neutral undead, any non-neutral alignment will do.

This is an excellent thread!

Interesting take on emilio the great BTW. I'm glad you didnt keep him a 1st level NPC. This really shows the difference in philosophy between OE and 3E. A nation famous character could never be 1st level, even if he isnt an adventurer in 3E, whereas in OE he would be a 1st level character with a high charisma score.

I thought about making him a bard, but expert is probably even better.

Hi Ray

Sure

He's a 10th level rogue so including the x4 he gets at first level he 13x whatever he gets for 1 level.

For each level he gets 8 (for being a rogue) +2 (for his Int) and +1 (for being human)

So all in all that's 13 x 11 = 143 points. ;)

I'm not really happy with Terari - I'll probably post an Epic version of about 24th level.

A few others things.

1) I kept with Ray's idea of not increasing stat's in line with HD (at least for the most part - one or two spellcasters needed tweaking in order that they could cast their highest level spells. IMC I have actually increased all of the NPCs stats in line with their HD.

2) I found it more difficult than I imagined just using the classes/feats etc from the SRD. I might post revised NPCs using a variety of other sources. Of course the more sources the longer each converson will take.

3) I don't tend to play spellcasters, so my choice of spells may be suspect - I have, however, were possible kept to the listed spells from K:KoA.

Going with Cthulhudrew's level conversion model, a 36th level BECMI character would become a 23rd level character. If Terari is described as a 36th level character in DoTE, which he very well may be, you might want to use that description for a revised version of T.

Stats seem to be higher in 3.x - obviously this is mostly due to +1 every 4hd/

That's why I stuck with it - it just seems that a lot of the NPCs get the same or a similar selection of feats.

Sounds about right- in some cases, I would probably fudge a bit, depending on history/description, etc. For instance, Barimoor (who moved to the KW c. 200 AC, so he's probably 800-1000 years old) likely rates a higher level on the scale, as would (say) Haptuthep the Lich-Pharaoh, who dates back to c.500 BC or thereabouts (though he's been inactive for much of the last several centuries, probably).

While I can't really appreciate the details yet, these conversions seem rather interesting - good work Ray and Gary.

I agree with the comments about seeing NPCs with levels in Expert and so on - it's rather nice to see them as levelled characters rather than just "normal man".

Regarding Terari, I can't help but feel that he has gotten a bit of a raw deal with his level - especially compared to some of the other characters. Bargle, was 15th level in GAZ1, got a boost to 17th level in K:KoA and is 17th level in your conversion. Terari meanwhile was 36th level in Dawn of the Emperors, is well over 100 years old, and yet only gets 20th level.

Of course, this is probably due to basing the conversion on K:KoA, but why base a conversion on a source that is flawed to start with? ;)

23rd level still seems too close to Bargle. Is the difference between 17th and 23rd - or even 17th and 26th - really equivalent to the difference between 17th and 36th in OD&D?

I don't know enough about 3rd edition levels yet to comment on the conversion techniques, but it seems to me that this should be one of the most powerful characters in the whole setting, and he deserves a much heftier conversion.

The only other comment I have at the moment is that it seems strange not to add in the stat bonuses for the NPCs - especially when it is so necessary to do it for spellcasting NPCs.

I don't want to end on a negative note, though - I am definitely looking forward to the time when I can read your hard work and understand all the little details. Keep it up! :D

23rd level still seems too close to Bargle. Is the difference between 17th and 23rd - or even 17th and 26th - really equivalent to the difference between 17th and 36th in OD&D?

I must admit I haven't looked that closely at that. :embarrass I just used the conversion guidelines. One thing that is different is hp totals as you get HD and Con modifiers for every level in 3/3.5 as opposed to the first 9 in previous versions.

The only other comment I have at the moment is that it seems strange not to add in the stat bonuses for the NPCs - especially when it is so necessary to do it for spellcasting NPCs.

I kept it like that because that's how Ray had started, IMC the NPCs do get the stat bonuses. (As well as feats/classes etc not in the SRD)

I don't want to end on a negative note, though - I am definitely looking forward to the time when I can read your hard work and understand all the little details. Keep it up! :D

I've stalled a little on converting the G:KoM NPCs due to the need of converting the Secret Crafts, spells etc first. But they will come. I might do some of the OD&D Gazeteer NPCs first.

Thanks. Gary did the most work and should get at least double kudos for that.

Of course, this is probably due to basing the conversion on K:KoA, but why base a conversion on a source that is flawed to start with? ;)

Unfortunately, I only own K:KoA so that's the reason. I really should go over to Pazio's store and buy the PDFs of the Gazetteers.

I decided to do it that way as I felt uncomfortable making decisions about what scores to raise. I can still remember the 10 wishes to just raise a single score from 1e. I guess it could said they're not 100% complete conversions but who can say that the scores weren't alreay raised? In the case of Bargle and Terari it is appropriate though.

Also, we don't do that IMC but it's not a problem as we never go above 14th level. We play it "old skool" and not by the book in this respect.
