I plan to play a wu jen (a la Complete Arcane) in a Greyhawk game, but I know almost nothing about the world (apart from what can be found in the Core books, of course). I'm given to understand that there is an Asian-themed area in Greyhawk, but I'm not sure and I could be wrong. Basically what I'm asking is - where would a wu jen (elf, if possible) go in Greyhawk? Any regional or cultural info would be much appreciated. Alternatively, if there isn't really a good place and I were to change the flavor to a somewhat more generic mystic-elementalist (elf), where would that go.

Thanks in advance!

He would be an outsider in the Flanaess, the region/continent the Greyhawk campaign focusses on. Not much is detailed on the china-like empire in the Far West, so i'm not sure if there would be racial integration or not.

Don't know if it's true but the original Oriental Adventures setting was supposed to be placed on Oerth but was cabbaged for Forgotten Realms instead (just like the Drow and their Vault). AFAIK there's nothing "official" beyond the Darlene map of the Flanaess Continent. There is a map that shows the greater surface of Oerth but it doesn't label any of it, again, "officially." There is supposed to be a place called "Nippon" (They may as well have called it Japan) southwest of the Flanaess with similar Asian themed countries nearby. I'm only a player and I'm sure I don't have it down pat like the true experts around here but that's how I remember it.

Hi all -
In an email to greytalk shortly after complete arcane came out, I asked a similliar question - "Greyhawking the Shuenja." I wondered how would one go about making an asian themed class more "Greyhawkish" in general. I've forgotten the results, and am not sure it was completely answered.
CanonFire is the #1 fansite for Greyhawk, owned and operated by Gary Holian, author of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. CanonFire is "Greytalk on the Web." Although he may not answer your question, there are so many others there that will, if you post the same question to their forums.
I recommend visiting canonfire.com and checking out their forums, as well as doing a search and on asian themes, shuenja, wu jen, and such. It is a place where they have thousands of articles written by fans. Some are most excellent quaility (better written and researched than many WotC authors [e.g. skr]), but many are middle ground, and of course some are just plain bad. I'm not sure which you'd find in your search.
Also, as I said, CanonFire (CF!) is "Greytalk on the Web," and as such, has a feature for searching posts that are in greytalk. As such, doing a search for my question above would certainly pull down at least 20 or so replies which may help quide you in your search.
You could also check out the Oerth Journal at OerthJournal.com. Although, I'm not certain their is anything in particular to the wu jen, I do belive that someone did do a write up on the West and quite possibly something on the asian empire.

To be fair, I must also note that I am involved with all those sites. I own greyhawkonline.com (GHO) which hosts all of the files downloadable from canonfire.com. I also own oerthjournal.com which is something that was started by Gary Holian and Erik Mona (EiC Dragon, Dungeon), but has been revived and continues to live on with Rick as the current EiC.

I hope that CanonFire! can be of some help. I offer Web hosting on GHO, which has many other fan sites, but I do not believe that any of them focus on the West, but you may want to check that out for yourself.

Be Well.
