Does anyone like the idea of adding camels or some type of Mammal resembling camels in Dark Sun? we designed a new creature very similar to a camel that was also edible if one were to get desperate ideas?

What's wrong with crodlus? They're tougher, faster, have natural armor - scales, can defend themselves, require less maintenance and are edible if nothing else is around.

Or Inix, for that matter.

not even to add more "flavor" to the game? it does mention goats, Chickens, sheep, et al. just wondered about adding a type of mammal similar, not to replace anything else. Muls? interesting Sysane.

I actually think adding more Earth animals dilutes the flavour, rather than adds. We already have Crodlu and Inix - what exactly does a camel or camel-esque animal add?

I'm with Korvar on this one. If you wanna add a mammalian beast of burden, that's all find and dandy, but at least be creative with it. Athas already has enough "athasian" earth creatures.

I remember seeing a camel-like life shaped creature in the AD&D Monsterous Compendium III. I don't have the DS Jaged Cliffs supplement so I don't know if they are in there as well.

Do you remember what it was called?

I couldn't find anything that looked like a camel, by leafing through and looking at the pictures.

It's called a dhev-sahr. It's described in both Windriders and Psionic Artifacts of Athas, and is pictured on page 72 of the MC Annual Vol. III, under the Life-Shaped Creations: Transport entry.

Hope that helps :D .

I suggest calling your camel creature a lemac, in honor of the scro! ;)

Ahh, that was my problem, I was looking through the MMIII for 3.5.

camel = lemac
orcs = scro

Scro are a species of, ta-da!, orcs from the Spelljammer setting. Its an old injoke, the switching of letters by TSR staff to produce a new race.

i wouldnt add normal critters into darksun cause it takes away from the evolution (cleansing) of the game world.

camels are too weak to survive the harsh enviroments of athas.

Well, there are "normal" animals on Athas. They're just weirder and have adaptations that make them hardier. So no reason a camel, lemac or lamex couldn't have a few bony plates (overall protection), stouter legs with scaly ridges (leg protection against low predators), a bigger hump under a scaly hide (smaller losses of water and fat) and saliva that burns and blinds your eyes for at least a day (form of attack that lets it flee).

Hey, why not?

"normal" animals in darksun are "abnormal" in our world and that is what i was refering to. If you start modifing the camel with bone plates and such its no longer a camel or a "normal" critter. That is what i was trying to say in my first post. put a "normal" camel into darksun takes away from the flavor of darksun.

sorta like putting darksun content in al quidem (not sure if i spelled that right)

Gives all new meaning to "Watch out, they spit.".

Camels with breath weapons rule!

Don't take this post seriously.
