(possible Spoilers)? Hey guys I have a bit of a problem, I want to run the classic campaign Vecna Lives for my Players Unfortunatley i dont know how to reinact the opening scene using 3E rules... to remind people the opening scene is where an ajent of Vecna, who has his hand and eye slaughters the greyhawk circle of eight (Tensor, Otto, ect ) who are all high lvl (18th) mages, the players get to play one of the great wizards. He does this by casting time stop and then breaking thier necks, charming them ect, this using 3E rules is not possible... and using 3.5 completly improbable. I'd still like to include this scene in the storey since it has so much potential fun for the GM, but I am at a loss as to how to slaughter a whole bunch of 18th lvl mages with a single lich-like thing with out hideously upping its ECL that is. once I remake them for 3E my players will use all 18 levels to great advantage, since no 18th lvl wizard worth his salt and definetly not one of the circle of eight would have a 17 Int. I cant pull the wool over the eyes of my players, since they are too experienced, i would like to beat them fair and square. (well mostly) unless i make the lich (like thing) a psion and have him in an antimagic zone i have no idea. or maybe give him Divine rank 0. i dunno. any sugestions? Thanks Shell -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : AlteredEgo Date : 09-25-03 12:58 AM Thread Title : Re: Vecna - Lives? (possible Spoilers)? (well mostly) There's your problem...you don't "beat" your players. It's not you vs them. Other than that, you're the DM, what you say goes regardless. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Shell Date : 09-25-03 01:19 AM aww thats not my problem at all, the whole seuence is about slaughtering 18th lvl mages they have to die for the adventure to continue. And i want to kill them using the rules in a realistic way. Instead of just fudging the whole thing, i know my word is law, but thats not the point. My problem is the 3rd Ed version of Timestop you cant effect people, the manual says i should let him slit their throats ect while time stop is in effect. Ecept that wont work since you cant effect people while time stop is in effect. And i dont want to introduce a version that lets you do it. in 2E it wasnt a problem. In 3.5 you cant do anything at all to people in time stop not even fire ball. IN 3E 18th lvl mages are more than what they were in 2E the power difference is fenominal. but anyway. Helpful thoughts would be apreciated. You're right to want to keep it intact yet not come across as fudging. Don't forget that Vecna-Halmadar has both the Eye and Hand of Vecna during this scene. If you want, use those and rework a couple of the artifiacts' powers to produce AntiMagic effects, psionic effects or whatever. Also, why not consider giving Vecna-Halmadar an epic level or two? He could devise an epic spell that allows him to reproduce some of the effects of 2e timestop, for example. Also, be sure to use the other encounters in the tomb to their fullest before they even reach Halmadar's crypt. And if you seriously beef up those initial encounters it should go some way to weakening the wizzies prior to meetin Vecna-Halmadar. I wouldn't worry about upping the power level of the opponents in that initial scene. You have to fry the Circle of Eight (or whoever you are using) for the rest of the adventure to work. As you point out, the Circle will be more powerful in 3e, so it stands to reason that their foes should be as well. Give 'em hell!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Shell Date : 09-25-03 08:47 AM Yeah thats definetly a good idea, the poor guy has had heaps of time to think about epic spells hasnt he? =) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Alrunic Silverfyre Date : 09-25-03 02:42 PM Exactly. Simply re work Time Stop to be an Epic version. Perhaps call it The End of Time or something of that effect. Make it 10th level and have it affect the council. It effects people normally, just as the 2E one did. It's such a good module...don't let some rules destroy the possibility of running it. Remember the golden rule of DnD: You're the Dm, change what you want to fit your style of play. It is YOUR game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Contrarian Date : 10-03-03 01:37 AM Originally posted by Shell My problem is the 3rd Ed version of Timestop you cant effect people, the manual says i should let him slit their throats ect while time stop is in effect. Why not hit them with temporal stasis instead? It doesn't have the silly "no touching victims" rule that time stop does. On the other hand, temporal stasis only affects one target per spell, and has a shorter range. The agent will either have to memorize the spell a lot, or you'll have to give him a convienent magic item (Ring of spell storing? Custom-made wand of temporal stasis? One of the Vecna artifacts?) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:17 AM.
