Well, maybe i'm not the first one to throw this idea out, but it seems to only make sense to me that there should be some sort of a template which would make fiends a template. It would be something similar to Savage progressions presented on the DnD website. I thought it would be interesting simply because you could have even the lowliest of human peasants become a dretch, or the highest paladin fallen from grace to a black guard become a pit fiend. These are just ideas however...I'm doing it myself with or without anyone elses help, but i would appreciate some input

I'm not sure I quite understand this, but what I'm getting is that you want to make each celestial and fiend its own template, right? (A mortal who dies would have this template added on to his existing stats, I assume)

In Planescape, a mortal who dies forgets everything about his life, although there are very rare exceptions. A celestial or fiend would not retain any knowledge from his mortal life and applying a template to his statistics from his mortal life (from a Planescape perspective) doesn't make sense.

Only problem is that before mortals become fiends they're going to be reduced to larvae status, which will strip them of most or all of their memories of mortal life, and boil away all except their core self and the LE, NE, or CE in their souls.

And then there're the fiends that don't arise directly from mortals, in which case a template wouldn't work since there wouldn't be anything to apply it to.

A template idea might work, but less for base fiends and perhaps more for fallen celestials that join the ranks of the Tanar'ri or Baatezu.

The theory behind it was that i am actually work on an alterate gaming system which encorperates d20modern and starwars as well as dnd. The theory behind it was is as follows:

Your slate is whiped clean and all you have left is your idian behavoir. This puts you in a place where you sit as larvae for centuries and wait until you are able to advance to the lowest form. To me, i think you should be able to advance much the same way as a character would (through the 6 basic classes and eventual integration of advanced classes) which would then allow you to become something more with sacrifice of XP or perhaps something akin to savage progressions. This would allow a dretch to shed it's former self if it sacrifices a lvl to obtain something new. This would make it possible so that you just don't have an "outsider" type and throw all of their HD onto it...(i'm doing this with everything, so everything has suddenly become much much longer, but i feel it is worth it, and that is my personal opinion.)

It would be similar to the idea of Least, lesser, great, and true in each catagory, picking out which one they would like to advance to. all would have to start as either a dretch or a lemure or a light archon...but...it's just an idea....it would be more like a prestige class then anything

Your slate is whiped clean and all you have left is your idian behavoir.

This is purely metaphysical speculation, but then, so is any discussion of progression through the ranks of otherworldly beings in the afterlife. I don't really feel like idian behavior is going to be very morally charged. Certainly idian behavior isn't going to guide you to a promotion on the Upper Planes. It just wants things, but it doesn't tell you what to do to get it. Seems to me that questions of morality come in later.

all would have to start as either a dretch or a lemure or a light archon

Lantern archon. Lights are aasimon.

thanks for the correction. the purpose of these are to give each demon/devil/celstial a little more umph and diversity.
