Missed Monsters

Was browsing through the Wanderer's Chronicle entry for the Crimson Savanna and stumbled across these gems:

p85 - "From the highly civilized kreen to giant k'cin crawlers to tiny clear-wing fliers, thousands of insect species fill the sky, the tall grass, and the red soil below."

p86 - "Humans and humanoids are unknown in the grasslands, but that doesn't mean a few won't serve as hearty meals for hundredclaws or tangle bugs."

p87 - "The majority of these insects have the cunning of predators or the fear-induced survival instinct or grazers, but only the kreen and a few slave-race insectoids have true intelligence."

so my questions are thus:
1) what's a k'cin crawler? can we get a monster entry on these? I'm picturing something akin to the huge insectoid creatures on that crappy movie, Starship Troopers - the ones that shoot that glowing stuff out of their *****.

2) how 'bout stat blocks for the other named vermin, ie hundredclaws and tangle bugs

and 3) slave-race insectoids.....ooooohhhhh. yet more possible monster entries? could this be the perfect excuse to add in dromites, amongst other possibilities?

I figured that Nyt loved me so much for this that I'd throw out some more: :P

still from the WC -

p80 “Waterfalls” - “It attracts predators and docile creatures alike as kank honey draws sting-wings.

p84 second paragraph - A typical ssurran caravan consists of everything the individual lizard en can carry, a few carts (either pulled or drawn by kwilits, large insects as adapted to the heat as their masters), and sometimes even a massive fortress beetle. Fortress beetles grow to a length of 25 feet, carrying sturdy, 15-foot-tall protective shells atop their backs. Much of the upper portion of thes shells is hollow, with intricate and beautiful chambers formed during the growing process. Ssurran use these docile insects as beasts of burden, filling their hollow shells with their most precious trade goods.

That last one sounds a bit like a korinth- but the korinth is a lizard-like critter.

*wanders out of nearby dunes grumbling*

There are indeed a few creatures here and there in the 2e flavour material that we passed over in favour of those that had actual stats (such as those mentioned above, the fanner beast and a couple of others). We might get around to developing these other, passing references. And then again, we might not. There are more productive ways to spend our time than figuring out the stats for the mighty stingwing, after all... ;)

That said, you might want to consider the following equivalencies for the creatures mentioned above, if you feel that your games are suffering unduly for their absence:

giant k'cin crawlers - giant stag beetle
tiny clear-wing fliers - swarms of flies (ooh, exciting!)
hundredclaws - megapede, cilops, colossal monstrous centipede or whatever
tangle bugs - swarms of carnivorous beetles in a massive tangle (mini-kanks?)
slave-race insectoids - dromites are a fine fit for this
sting-wings - bees, regular, giant, killer, ninja or otherwise
kwilits - any kind of giant beetle with the same heat resistance as ssurrans
fortress beetle - watroach (the flavour description matches up pretty well)

Any actual stats wouldn't be very far from the above, so these should cover it to avoid design redundancy. Have fun letting the bugs out...

*wanders off again into sand dunes, checking pants for stingwings*

The Wrath of Khan?

...or Moby Dick, if you'd prefer to sound erudite rather than trekite. :D

If it's coming from Nyt, it was more than likely trekite ;)

from p58 of Black Spine - Adv. Book 2
"The cave is home to several hundred var. These small winged creatures feed on the blood of the living."

stats, and a pic even, included :P

and on p61 of the same, there is a creature called an uoo-taas. there seems enough info for a full write-up so i'm not sure why it wasn't done in the first place, but IMO this'd certainly make a good addition to our 3.5 set.

and on p87, there's yet another one. this time, a plant called psivy. stats included as well.

The stuff from Black Spine is already on our list of things to add to the next ToA . There are quite a few more in there besides the ones you have mentioned.

Hey, I've read Moby Dick. Nyt can read!

Even saw the somewhat cheesy Patrick Stewart movie.
