I'm joining a playgroup who is starting a Dragonlance campaign set just after the War of the Lance. This group needs a Wizard, and I'm quite happy to fit the bill. My starting character level is 6 to use how I like. I own the Dragonlance Campaign Sourcebook, and most of the generic d20 D&D sourcebooks released to date. I'm not overly fond of the High Sorcery prestige classes in the campaign book, and was wondering if there are any other cool prestige classes in some of the other DL fluff books to consider? Also, are there any other prestige classes from generic books that would fit into Krynn well?

Any input from current DL players and DM's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Wizard of High Sorcery was tweaked a little in the Towers of High Sorcery sourcebook, and that book also includes a handful of new prestige classes suitable foe wizards.

My two favorite (fucsed) arcane caster classes are Sylvan MAge (from Towers of High Sorcery that Cam mentioned) and Loremaster (from the DMG). Loremaster works great in Dragonlance.

Thanks guys! I'm going to see if the DM or any of the other players have The Tower of High Sorcery book, and I'm going to go read the Loremaster PrC more carefully.

Another thing that players of wizards should remember is that you can be a member in good standing of the Orders of High Sorcery without taking levels of the PrC. The campaign setting is a little muddled on that fact, but it was corrected in Towers.

So if you don't want to bother with the High Sorcery prestige class, that's OK - you're not condemned to be a renegade.

Play as a Renegade!!!

You'll be hunted, threatened, feared, hated and will have a lot of fun!!!... until your character is caught by a renegade hunter

And that would be me. :D In the towers of High Sorcery rulebook the renegade hunter was my favorite after the basic Wizard of High Sorcery prestige class. One thing to note, while you can be in good standing with the orders of High Sorcery and not be a member, Sylvan mages, Griffon mages, Dark Dwarf Savants, they do watch you like a hawk the moment you start to gain spells of third level or higher. If you only have the basic campaign book, you may have missed out on the fact that wizards of High Sorcery don't have to specialize(if that's a problem). Just be a generalist.

As for playing a renegade...don't. It's simply not worth the hassle. You'll run into a black robe character, like one of mine, who will kill you first, then ask questions of your spirit later...

The archmage from the DMG is a good fit for Wizards of High Sorcery. The flavor fits perfectly. Also, as mentioned above, the Loremaster is a great fit for DL. I've used it for a few characters.

Towers of High Sorcery has several great PrC's. My favorites are the sylvan mage and winternorn (which is FAR better than WotC's frost mage!), as well as the griffon wizard and renegade hunter.

Age of Mortals has other good PrC's for wizards, including the war mage and Solamnix Auxiliary mage. Even the spellfilch can work.

There's a lot of PrC's out there that would be great for Dragonlance.

Just make sure with you DM that your character has already passed the Test and you'll be good to go.

If your DM doesn't agree to this, then better grow some eyes in your back...

If you don't take levels in WoHS PrC do you still get affected by the moon's position?

Nope.
