#1kalthandrixApr 02, 2006 12:04:13 | I was looking through the Elves of Athas book for some elvish words to come up with a cool name and it does not have a section like that. It does have a very small part with some names but none i wanted to use. Anyone know where or if there is an elven language primer in one of the DS books? |
#2zombiegleemaxApr 02, 2006 13:46:31 | I'm pretty sure there is nothing like that... at least not that I remember. I own all of the DS products and nothing like that comes to mind. I could be wrong, but I am pretty certain that there isn't. Sorry. |

#4master_ivanApr 02, 2006 14:50:22 | No no, I am pretty sure it exist, we used to build some of our elven character with this table names. wasn't that a forgotten realms book? I often used the dwarf section of it...I don't remember the name of it though... |
#5master_ivanApr 02, 2006 14:53:01 | Although the 3rd novel of PP gives a certain picture of elvish name construction in DS. Faeneyon, Sadira's father, Magnus was an Elf... |
#6ruhl-than_sageApr 02, 2006 15:25:44 | The thing about the elven language in the Elves of Athas book is that they love double letters. Any name that has double letters in it looks elven and any name that has a long vowel sound in it sounds elven. |

Yes, there is the one in the Elves of Athas... which Kalthandrix already mentioned and said that he didn't like. Apart from that one small section in the Elves of Athas book, I do not recall there being anything else on the elven language on Athas. Like I said, I didn't exactly look through every single book to try to find out, but I am pretty certain that there is nothing apart from that in published Dark Sun materials. However, Kal, I am pretty certain that the Dark Sun Netbook has a huge index of names for all races at the end of it. I believe you can still get that from Athas.org's download section. Try that. |
#8kalthandrixApr 02, 2006 18:00:05 | I was hopeful- I have all of the printed products too, but I was hoping it may have been in the one or two Dragon mags that I do not have from the time the game was in print. I was going for something like Dark Star or Dark Sky...I could try and chop the names in the book to give me the parts but I donno about that. Well, it was worth a try. Thanks guys and/or gals :D |
#9zombiegleemaxApr 02, 2006 18:21:39 | Kal, I would recommend looking at the back of the Dark Sun netbook. It has an alphabetized list of all names ever used in any Dark Sun product separated by race. That is probably not what you are looking for, but it could be a great help... and, of course, at the very least you could just make something up that sounds cool. :D |
#10methvezemApr 02, 2006 19:11:15 | I have some suggestions for you Kal: dark + sky = Noka dark + star (night + sun) = No’utkomi I hope this help. :D |

One of the best Elf language primers I have ever found was the Middle Earth Campaign Guide Dark - Lóna in Quenya (High Elf) - Dûr in Sindarin (Wood Elf) Sky - vilya or wilya in Quenya (no Sindarin difference) Star - êl or elen in Quenya - gil in sindarin So, a High Elf version of Dark Star would be Lónaêl or Lónaelen (I assume the difference being whichever sounds more feminine or masculine High Elf version of Dark Sky would be Lónavilya or Lónawilya (again, whichever sounds better for male/female) Wood Elf versions would be Dark Star- Dûrgil Dark Sky- Dûrvilya or Dûrwilya This is, of course, if you want to use Tolkein's Elvish I tried to find a copy of the book on ebay to link, but it is not there. |
#12methvezemApr 02, 2006 19:53:04 | One of the best Elf language primers I have ever found was the Middle Earth Campaign Guide Here I totally agree with you, Tolkien elvish language is wonderfully developed, I'm a fan of it myself since I first read the LotR years ago, with its appendix on names at the end. Truth be told, the names I suggested above are made from an (athasian) elven lexicon I'm slowly working on. It begun with what I found on a web page that translated some of the elven words from EoA, and I'm (albeit slowly, while working on other projects ;)) expanded it. So the names I've given are based on words from EoA. When I'm satisfied with it, I should post it on the boards . |
#13kalthandrixApr 02, 2006 20:39:21 | I have some suggestions for you Kal: So would the dark star be pronounced no-oot-ko-me? Gilliard DeRosan- I will use your as a fall back encase I go not like the sound of the others Meth posted- I do know though that the player whose character this will be (I make all my players first characters- and he has almost zreo experiance in RPing) is a huge fan of Middle Earth- he has the lyrics to "Cementary Gate" written in Elvish I think. Thanks again |
#14jon_oracle_of_athasApr 03, 2006 11:15:57 | BigBubba used to have some stuff on the elven language. He helped me come up with the elven phrases in Tyrian Conspiracy. If he sees this, maybe he can post what is left of it (I vaguely recall a hard drive crash). |
#15kalthandrixApr 03, 2006 11:20:32 | That would be a great help Jon- thanks. |
