[sorry, I had no idea how to name this thread]

From the latest Save my Game installment on the Dungeons & Dragons main page:

If Dark Sun is just D&D with gith instead of goblins, kanks instead of horses, and psionic +1 swords instead of magic +1 swords, then you've wasted your effort.

I agree with the guy on most of the article for older gamers, especially about Dark Sun and Ravenloft; those are two of the more 'mature' settings since they deal with things like slavery, horror and such, but for me, his suggestion about switching DMs didn't work for me. I've DMed since the original three white booklets and have yet to find another DM's campaign I liked well enough to stay as a player (I'm sure there's some out there, I just haven't found one yet, but see below).

My son's trying his hand at being a DM and ran one short adventure he came up with and I enjoyed it, but then he DM's like his old man. Right now he's running a game at High School for some of his friends, and when I asked him if they'd maybe want to play in our Dark Sun campaign, his response was, "They couldn't handle it, dad, they'd die the first time they stepped out of the city walls." Sad. :D

I agree with what the writer says, for the most part too. I wanted to mention however, that my best gaming group I had played with, we had basically 2 DMs -- myself and an old Army buddy of mine. We'd not swap out during a single campaign, but would rather work it so I ran a campaign, then he did, then I did, and we alternated that way. It actually made things a bit easier -- because DMing constantly from one campaign to the other would burn us out, and creativity would eventually wilt a bit. By alternating back and forth like we did, I could DM one campaign, then be a player in the next (take a break from DM'ing). Eventually, during the campaign which I was a player, I began devising a new campaign to run everyone in, and then we'd end up finishing the current campaign, and a whole new one was ready to go.
