Ok, reading the timeline, and coming back after my computer throwing a fit, getting into muay thai and brazilian jiu jitsu as well as working, i've been a bit thrown back.

So somebody named gretch discovers necromancy to replace defiling magic int he deadlands...how does this work?

Its not necromancy which he learns - necromancy is a school of magic - but how to tap the medium of the Grey to power spells. The class, prestige class actually, is called Necromant because the guy powers his spells from the plane of the dead, but not because his spells and magic in general are related to death or the undead.

As to how Gretch accomplished this...well first he does it after becoming undead, so he's naturally linked to the Grey at the time, and secondly the absence of plant life within reach allows him to concentrate on alternate sources for the energy.

Rajaat learned to tap plant life energy and invented all of magic, while Gretch only needed to learn to tap the Grey; Gretch had (according to the Timeline) 42 years to discover how to do this.
