Wow... That's a bit of a pain.

No one post anything good for the first two weeks of May! ;)

Seriously, I think I might have to consider avoiding the boards until they are up and running again properly in the middle of May. Those of us who can could move to the list until then...

Yeah, lets make those two weeks a Mailinglist Megaparty!

Hey, just trying to look at the bright side of things... :P

Just in case you haven't read the annoucement at the top of the board.

So if I read that correctly any posts posted between May 1 - 15 will disappear when the new boards come into being! Better save those posts to disk, ;)

I just remembered this.
I may drop by here in the next few days, but I doubt I will be posting much during the weekend and nothing after that untill the 15th. I sure will miss this place in the few weeks to come, but hopefully increased MML activity in this period will keep me going ;)

See ya'll over at the MML!

Yep, same here, though I might be quite active this weekend, we'll see.

But come Monday I am going to avoid posting for the two week period. It seems silly to post discussions which will vanish when the new boards come online.

I hope you will be! I hope you will draw some new wonderful map. Not some old revised stuff, but some Thorf-new-map!
I will love to see a Thorf-standard Davania map (or just some Davanian region, such as Emeronda, Arypt, Kastelios and countyside, Pelatan or...).
I'd love Arypt more than others, so I could build some more Katapec stuff around a nice map!

Crap- I'd forgotten about this myself. Looks like I'll be spending more time on ENWorld next week while I'm at work.

Of course, we could always keep interesting discussions archived at the end of the period, and repost them on the new boards.

I agree that it is completely pointless to post any replies to existing threads, though.

I assume they are saving the existing threads and 'porting' them over? Or are they getting rid of them completely?

...

Don't worry, I am all set to dominate the boards those two weeks with my Pokemon-Mystara integration, including full conversion notes so we can ditch the dice and play Mystara the way it was meant to be played...with pocket monsters!!!!!!!

The message at the top of the boards has gone. Does this mean that we have entered null time? Is it time for Dave to release his Pokemon hordes?

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed yet... Look at the message at the top of the boards. The upgrade has been delayed, and it seems that the posts from the last two weeks are not going to vanish after all.

This leads me to think that perhaps we should handle things a little differently for the next time. I was considering taking snapshots of all the new posts and re-posting them, or at least the highlights, after the new boards come up. It's not that hard - you just click "Quote reply" and copy paste into a document.

The advantage of this is that we don't have to try to hold back on posting in the meantime - which now seems in retrospect to have been a waste of time anyway - not least since we failed to stop posting much at all! ;)

You could also use the Save Thread or Email This Page tools at the top of the thread page- I don't know if that's easier or not.

The reason to copy the quoted post is that it keeps all the formatting, smileys, etc. The only thing is leaves out is quoted quotes, but generally posts are intelligible without them, so it's not a big problem.

I haven't tried the thread-saving options, but I would assume they will output either plain text or HTML. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because it would make the job a bit easier. :D

Okay- just checked the email part (because I've never used it before), and it just provides a link to the page. I should have realized that- duh.

As for saving the thread, it does keep all the formatting- the smileys, even the quotes (although, obviously, it only displays as text "

").

I saved a whole grip of threads way back when the pruning was first announced, just to be on the safe side. It would be really easy to archive them using the save option.

I see what you're saying, but the end product is in HTML, right? What I'm suggesting is that the important posts for each thread could be reposted back in the right places, so for example any discussion in Marco's Immortals thread could be pasted right back in, so as to keep the continuity of the discussion. If the saved version is in HTML, that's not so easy to do.

Hm. Not sure I follow. The thread is saved as a .txt file- it's basically the same thing you see when you post a thread, or reply to one- ie, all the formatting etc. is textual, with the appropriate tags, so that when it is repasted, it would show up as it looks here.

I'll try an example from this thread, just to see how it looks:

Title : New Boards Annoucement.

During this two week period, the existing message boards will continue to be available, however no new posts or changes made to user profiles made between May 1 - 15 will be ported over to the new boards. Nor will new registrations be accepted during this period.

Just in case you haven't read the annoucement at the top of the board.

So if I read that correctly any posts posted between May 1 - 15 will disappear when the new boards come into being! Better save those posts to disk, ;)

Regards
Gary

----------------------------------

That's just cut and pasted from the text file that resulted from saving the thread. I think this is the sort of thing you had in mind, right? Just rather than individually cutting and pasting every new response as it comes up, you just save the entire thread, and cut and paste the missing portions back into the thread.

Not that much of a time saver, but it helps.

Ah, so it keeps the formatting in message board code rather than HTML, then? I've never done it before so I just assumed it would save it in HTML. :embarrass

Yes, that should be a big help, because it means posts can be reposted exactly as they were. It's a relatively simple matter of saving the additions to each thread and reposting them once the boards come back up. The only problem I can foresee is that we might not get much warning as to when exactly the new boards will appear. But at least it means that for the first week or so we can all post as normal.

Wizards.com’s planned upgrade to the message boards has been rescheduled. The new timeline is May 30th, 9 pm PDT (midnight EDT/ GMT 4 am May 31st) – June 12th, 2006.

What this means to you is that all posts that have been made since May 1 will not be lost as was previously described and registration has been re-enabled. The database snapshot that will be upgraded will be remade at the start of the new schedule.

For more information and discussion go to this thread.

Just to let you know. ;)

I'll be away from my computer for a lot of next weekend and although, of course I will try to get everything that happened over the weekend on Sunday evening I might not be able to. Just to let you know in terms of posting new materials and the new boards coming back on June 12. You're always free to post things directly to me for inclusion on the Vaults as well, especially if in this case it might otherwise be lost to the ether.

The new boards are presumably going to come in at any time now - depending on what time of day they decide to do it. (Actually they're already up, as you will see if you check the message at the top of the boards. ;) )

Anyway, if there were any posts from the last two weeks that need saving, now would be a good time to do so. For my part, I don't think there was anything we can't post again, but I haven't been posting much lately so I might have missed something.

In other words: LAST WARNING! Save what you want to now.

I was hoping they would actually go ahead and do this while I was at work. Its been the 12th for many hours now, Europe time. I guess I'll have to wait with my reposts till tomorrow then...

Hey, the 12th is almost over here! Unless they do it within the next hour and 15 minutes, it'll be the 13th, at least for me. I suppose that's fine - it'll make a nice birthday present for me. ;)

Happy Birthday from Canada, Thorf! (I love cake!)

I hear that these old boards will stay up for a while after the new ones start up - thats good to hear! We can make sure we don't lose anything important. Of course, it will be nice to have this whole thing done and finished (and I'll bet WotC is thinking the same thing ;) ).

The new boards have been delayed again.

Now that I've hopefully got your attention: it seems that the problem they encountered was too major, and they are almost certainly not going to be able to put up the new boards. So once again all of our posts from the last two weeks are going to remain here permanently, and instead there will be another transition period at some time in the future - 3 weeks at the earliest is what they are saying.

Now that this has happened twice, and given that we know how easy it will be to copy and paste all our posts into the new boards anyway, I think we should ignore the whole situation and just resume normal posting.

PS - Thanks for all the birthday wishes! :D

But now I am really curious about those new posts you are talking about!

So far, so good.

I really like the look of the forum as well; very nice. There's some new features in the reply box as well. If only the search function can get back online things will be great.
