Looking at the map gallery from the Tome of Magic ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20060331a ), I found this map:

The Vault of Catharandamus.

Now, IIRC, Catharandamus was the High Priest of Arik from B3. Could this be the same guy? Can anyone who owns ToM shed some light on this?

I thought the same so I borrowed a copy of Tome of Magic to have a look. It never actually mentions Arik, or B3 for that matter, but the background to the adventure strongly suggests it is based on it.

*Groan* hmmm...maybe I'll have to buy this book afterall then. I really doubt I'll be using any of the rules/spells though.

Care to give some more details on the adventure?

Unfortunatley I don't have the book to hand but I recall a reference about the valley being bought to ruin despite past efforts of adventurers that I took to be a reference to B3.

The chasm in the map linked to the Plane of Shadow and Catharandamus was an undead of some description. It was a low level adventure and seemed designed to provide an introduction to one of the new types of magic through some books in Catharandamus library.

The Tome of Magic itself is a very nice book with some of the best artwork and design I've seen in a WotC book yet. The three new magic systems presented were very interesting but I felt they would be hard to incorporate into Mystara. There are a few threads about the book over on the Future Releases board.

The beauty for Wotc writers and staff is that "dead" worlds like our Mystara has a host of ideas, plots, NPC's, you name it, for the taking and using in 3.5. Sucks for us though, hehe.

Well that is one way of looking at it. Another is that WotC in this way are actually making source material for us, perhaps even without knowing it themselves. Regardless of references to GH, FR or Eberron, there is nothing we cannot steal back, purge, purify and add to Mystara, providing us with new ideas and inspiration.

Haven ofcourse, has not been brought to ruin in Karameikos, but using James Mishler's idea that Haven is linked with Faerie, and only occasionally appears on the Prime Plane, this concept may still be used.

Replace the Plane of Shadows with the Dimension of Nightmares. Catharandamus would be an undead now, since he was most likely killed during B3. I'd suggest placing his Vault just northeast of Haven, just south of that arm of the Altan Tepes mts in Karameikos.

Neat!
