Thoguht I would share the following DS story with the boards. Yesterday in our session the PCs battled a Dragon at level 9. The Dragon had engaged Oronis of Kurn in battle and was already weakened and had 9 negative levels. I thought it would be a tough fight but the PCs managed to get 3 crits on the poor sod 2 involving Crystal Shards with 9 pps spent on them and the other was with the X4 heart pick from a Righteous Might, Divine Power buffed cleric . One dead Dragon later....The party consists of.

Ben level 9 Human Cleric of Water
Sky level 9 Human Templar of Oronis
"Scruff" Level 9 Halfling Ranger
Kamandra level 9 Human Psion

The PCs are on their way back to Kurn from the Buried City which is there HQ. They rest the night in a cave and encounter some Wraths loyal to Rajaat that spin some nice BS story about Rajaat being a nice guy and being betrayed by the 1st defilers- the Sorceror Kings. They manage to convince the PCs that Oronis is weak from hit battle vs a Dragon and they equip them with Dragonbane steel weapons and an obsidian orb they can throw at the king that uses Mordenkainens Disjunction. They also half convinced the Templar the King would eventually feed on her soul- "How many old Templars do you know?" The plan wasn't to bad but was fatally flawed partially due to faulty intelligence.

1. No one knew that Oronis was an Avangion although I dropped hints. The Templar suspected he was not evil though.

2. He wasn't weakened from his battle with the weaker Dragon.

3. The Templar remained loyal to him and threw the rest of the party in jail. Oronis and some allied preservers just used Power Word Stun on all of them. Oops.

I gave them a break and they now know about Oronis's true nature whom they've decided to serve

4 level 9 players against a 9 level Dragon?
They should be toast by now... even with 9 negative levels, the dragon magic alone would easily finish them off!

No in 2nd ed terms it was a level 22 Dragon with 9 negative levels. I use homebrew rules that make Dragons more on par with their 2nd ed equivilents rather than Athas.org rules. This was the stats I used and made him weaker. Due to being weaken in a battle with Oronis his Dragon magic was used up and he had less hit poits, PP, and spells. Basically he wasn't at full strength and was "unbuffed".
