Since this thread will be gone, I just wanted to say that I thnk that Rajaat was a nice guy. He got a bad wrap becuase his kids ganged up and attacked him. All because he didn't want to share. How wrong of them to keep him locked up in a cage for so long! If they would only let him out, he could get on with improving the world. Does anyone remeber the Harmonium from Planescape. They were good guys that were working for the same goals as Rajaat. The problem is that with Rajaat, his two public relations people were beheaded. Let's all take a moment, and think about what we can do to help correct this horrible wrong. :P

Humans were obviously superior, the rest of the lot being inferior breeds. Good ridance to them and more power to Rajaat!

Go Ra-jaat, go Ra-jaat, go Ra-jaat!

The simple fact that many races *were* cleansed is proof enough that Rajaat was in the right - after all, if they weren't meant to be wiped out they would have survived, right?
The only thing I can fault Rajaat on is choosing humans to be his champions, when he knew that he'd eventually cleanse them as well...too much power in one corner. He should he have created a champion from each race, without any of them knowing each other, and tasked each one with wiping out one or more of the other races. That way the champions would have not only done their job, but they would have had the help of every single race in doing so. Now *that* is how you commit genocide on a world-wide scale; you've got to get everyone involved in it. You just can't expect a war to go on for a couple millenia without someone finally getting bored of it. Sheesh.

I dislike the term Genocide... It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Think of it more as neatening up the gene pool. The Champions were more genetic lifeguards than anything else.

Good point, although it could be argued that, since the whole idea of "genes" is, at best, something that only the Blue Age halflings knew about, that you really can't commit "gene-ocide" anyway. Also, given that all the races were descended from the same species over an evolutionary time period measured in decades, centuries or millenia at most, I bet it'd be really tough to decide which genes were really the "clean" ones and which ones weren't.

So really, the Champions were more like plastic surgeons, and Rajaat's only crime was not "seeing" the differences between everyone - they just wanted everyone to look the same, because, as Rajaat knew, deep down inside they were all alike.

Some say it was a matter of body hair, or the shape of ears, but I know it was about the color of the skin! Did you know all the extinct races were fair-skinned? Yes, indeed you must, it is a well known fact. Only the humans with their dark skin, induced from all the honest laboring in the fields, deserve to live. Who would dare to think that fair-skins are worth the air they breath? The very fact of the fairness of their skin is proof enough that they were a no-good lazy bunch. Damn straight.

[Hehe. Take that, all my fair-skinned ancestors!]

Hey now, anybody who wipes out all the gnomes and pixies is ok in my book. Getting rid of the others is really just bonus. :D

And I only say one more thing, Death to all the ret-conners bringing back the despised of Rajaat, Death to you I say!!!!!!11

Should I write something on that matter? There wouldn't be anything left to say for anyone else, though. Nah, why spoil the fun for the others...

Come on now Elonarc, I am an American, and we always do things bigger and better than anyone else: can you say "American Indian?" me niether. btw, would you like this old blanket that i don't use? In fact, we are currently working so hard at maintain our "identity" that we want to build a BIG wall. hmmm.... that worked for China, right? it only took them centuries of foriegn influence and invasion (after the wall was built) to be in a position to take over. Seems like a good idea.

Now that I think about it, maybe that's what Rajaat should have done. Built a big wall... some kind of epic spell.. yeah... that could work...

He could have herded all the Halflings into a confined area, cast some sort of Epic Dome of Invulnerability spell, then just cast a slow-acting Destroy Everything spell on the outside. I bet you could work up an Epic spell that does something like 1 damage every hour to everything within a 10,000 mile radius with a duration of a few weeks that'd work.

i have an idea, do all that you talked about, but then make the champions into a boy band style singing group. they "sing" the epic spell, which actually makes the girlies go crazy, scream really loud and pop everyones heads from the incessant screaming and crying. Doesn't most tragic events bring about screaming and crying?

Hm, or Rajaat could have staged a massive football (European football, a.k.a. soccer) after a massive marketing campaign to get half of Athas' population as fans of one side or another, and then just let the post-game rioting and hooliganism wipe out everyone.

Shout out to my homies in the U.K. and other football-obsessed parts of Europe. Word.

I've been trying to get into European football.

Another thing Rajaat could do is simply just taint the local hookers with deadly STDs and that would work wonders. Esepcailly since such an event usually spawns more of that sort of thing. ;)

You guys just stole that propaganda idea from American T.V. commericals. :P

Besides you can add the systematic murder millions of Vietnamese to the Elimination of the American Indians on the U.S.'s talley. And if you want to go a little more indirect, the selling of weapons and financial support of a number of other instances of genocide leading up to the modern day. East Timor anyone? Hell whatever "horrors" might have been commited by iran or iraq are primarily our responsibility too. Afterall Saddam Hussein was trained by the CIA and put into power in Iraq by the U.S. and the formerly Democratic Government of Iran was desposed with U.S. aid leading to the rise of a theocracy in that country.

But those are silly facts and several American administrations (especially the current one in particular) has proven time and time again that if they just make the people feel good about themselves and put the evil mark on brown people and other peoples that aren't like us, then silly facts like these really don't matter.

More important than that is the ability to make the general American populace fear a threat that, really, is in no way different than it ever has been. Just like the "bird flu" or "SARS" or any of the other big scares that kept us fearful for a few months, only to be replaced by something else.
Fear is a much better agent of control than contentment - always has been, always will be. Some dictatorial-types have just figured out how to use it to their advantage more than others.

I think it's a combination of the two personally, but you're right that fear is definitely one of the bigger aspects of the equation.

You're correct - controlling the masses involves several different elements working together. One, you've got to give everyone a reason to feel united. Two, you've got to keep them focused on that reason to the exclusion of lesser things that would, at other times, bother the heck outta them. Between the two of them, this administration definitely has it covered.

you're forgetting that it is also important to make people within a democratic country slide to opposite sides of a specrum. that way they can be divided and fight over stupid non-issues, while the people in power stay in power. Who benifits the most from agruements? media! why? if things are divided, and people are unhappy they can... say it with me now: SELL MORE ADVERTISING SLOTS!!!!!!!!!!!! when was it that the news was in business to make a lot of money, rather than report TRUTH. of course, if you move to a more rescritive government, say... one where a big old dragon king doesn't even let you read... then it is not really as much of an issue. sort of a crush your enemies who can hurt you, and keep the enemies that can't hurt you from ever being able to hurt you. you don't see Hamanu selling magic items to the VA to go and hunt down a fledgling dragon, the boy does it himself! anyway, i think i am done rambling...

What! The media are the only impartial observers of the truth that we have today. Without them doing the great, and often dangerous job that they do, we whould be unaware of a vast majority of the critical events that have taken place around the globe.

They show use the truth without bias and increase our social and global awareness- without the media, we be about as uninformed as a caveman!

We're talking about the same thing right? You know, the mainstream media?

I'm not referring about NPR or other cool public radio and other things like that, but the mainstream media of America...the mainstream media hasn't been the same since it found out it could make news entertaining and make money off of it instead of just doing what they did before and taking a bite in the profits to be the one true impartial observers that we once had in this country. Always asking questions, always taking a stand when no one else would and when there needed to be one made and above all not caring about party ties as long as it educated the public (see Woodward and Bernstein as an example).

True journalism is dead these days my friend, or at least it is in this country.
