How many DM's give out gems as loot in DS, and if you do do you give them out as cp or gp values?
I was wondering because me and anothe dm not familur with DS were talking about DS and he was curious as to what the avaerage loot was like i told him i rarely ever gave out gems or magic items and was kinda put off by that but i told him that its not that i neer gave them out it was just rare. then he saked if the gems were in cp or gp and for the life of me i couldn't remember but thinking on it i think they were in gp which is why i didn't give many out. what does everone else have them as GP or CP

IIRC, non-metal items use standard pricing with GPs becoming CPs, theoretically this would include gems, in a strict interpretation of the rule.

In reality it probably all depends on how rare you want gems to be. Really, gems are priced solely on the desire to have them, which is a direct result of the supply/demand model. Gems, independently, don't have any particular value other than that which the market gives them. If you'd like to think that gems got rare(r) in the same fashion that iron did, then yes I would give them GP values and give them out rarely (you won't have a chance to give them out much because of their inflated value). If you don't imagine that the same force that caused the rarity of metals also caused a rarity in gems, adjust their prices to CPs, but in this case you'll see them be far more common (especially since more people will be able to afford them according to the DMG treasure tables).

I have them as CP in my game, which I believe was the official 2nd ruling. Gems are as common in the setting as the average setting.
