Death of a Demiplane

With the end of Arthaus producing Ravenloft products, and Wizards of the Coast appearing to have no plans for any soon, it seems that Demiplane of Dread has undergone its only real-world Grand Junction. Personally, I enjoyed the Arthaus line of products and how they moved events in Ravenloft along (this has been discussed at length elsewhere obviously).

So where do you think Ravenloft could and should go if Wizards of the Coasts where to begin producing new products?

A reboot to bring it a little more into line with standard WotC 3.5 D&D? (New official stats for Hazlik based on 3.5 Forgotten Realms Rules? Lord Soth from 3.0 Dragonlance, etc, etc)

A prequel? (A previous Demiplane of Dread or adventures more closely linked in to the formation of the previously published world.)

A brand new demiplane with brand new domains and darklords? (New domains and darklords based on Eberron characters, d20 Modern and d20 Future, etc. etc)

Also, always a sucker for a good story myself, I'm a little disappointed we never had a canon version of how the Dukkar affected Ravenloft: did anyone have homegrown 'fanon' versions of events after the published storyline finished?

Actually, WotC is already on its way to milk more money out of the setting..

Witness the future mega-adventure:

They'll probably link it to Heroes of Horror too.

As for bringing it back fully to (un)life, I doubt it. Unless some smart white collar manages to convince Hasbro that multiple settings would mean big $, it won't happen again. Not on the scale we knew in the bygone days of TSR anyway.

the good old days...
well, we'll have to wait after Expedition. I think we'll know the truth after that....

I doubt Wizard will do it.

crossing over worlds of D&D is "as dead as" Ravenloft.

Actually, I was at my local Hastings store the other day and they had the RLPHB, DMG, Denziens of Dread and a whole list of others that were updated to 3.5 rules.

all for $8 a peice. I dropped 40 bucks that afternoon and got a complete campaign setting. All under S&S, and all 3.5 edition.

White Wolf / Sword & Sorcery / Arthaus apparently only had the license to sell their remaing inventory until June. It would seem that they unloaded what remaining stock they had to discounters, and those are now showing up on the cut-rate shelves. My local Hastings has all the 3.5 version products, I picked up a set for a 'fraternity brother' in Iraq, and then bought some of the more unusual items for re-sale on Ebay. I made a killing on a couple of packs of the Tarrokka deck!

All I can say is they'd better keep making Ravenloft stuff. I sure hope "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft" coming out this Fall is any indication, but my gut tells me no. I hate Wizards sometimes. :hoppingma

When I witnessed the rise of Eberron, I knew their would be no further attempts to give Ravenloft the attention it needed. Kids like cheap easy thrills and Ravenloft is all about mood, atmosphere and theme. No need for that when you can just hop on a zepplin with autocannons and fight other flying machines with robots, I mean, warforged. Its hard to scare a "warforged ninja" anyway.

I'll keep hoping, I'll keep wishing. But I know the reality of economics and the current focus of WOTC seems way far away from Ravenloft. When they put out any Ravenloft product, I'll buy it twice and give a friend a copy as a token effort to make it desired by more people than just me.

Just had a thought. Someone in this community must have read Gazetteer V. Does S give any indication in the last final thoughts that there will be more Gazetteers?

It's stated (more or less) that she is due to depart from the Core to explore the surrounding seas. That said, I doubt WotC will continue the series.

The FoS has posted a very good Gazetteer of Souragne on their website though.

Thank you Mortepierre.

The Gaz? It's an ongoing project. The next release should be around October, if all goes well. We haven't chosen the domain for the next one.

I did not like the new stuff as much as the older material, I used it when not even using Ravenloft sometimes. It would be good if Wizards picked them up again and the new set may be a start or sort of a measuring stick to see if their is interest. Though I am not sure how big the market is for horror in a D&D setting. I know it is very interesting and unique but many who like that sort of things will go to White Wolfand their settings.

I hate WotC because they won't publish any of the old campaign settings and don't love d20 Modern. They could at least publish official products for old campaign settings sporadically or even experimentally, say a very big corebook for 3.5 PlaneScape or Spelljammer and then made accessories for it every once in a while depending on how popular it gets.

I personally consider WotC to be bad for numnerous reasons, such as not making internally consistent or constantly updated products (many 3.0 books are still not updated and Ebberon does not work with the standard cosmology), caring mostly about money and not enough about fan desires (everything they do, they do for the eventual goal of money and advertising, and these forums are a form of advertising), encouraging and caring only about roll-playing and making a mockery of role-playing and putting more importance on brawn then brains or beauty, being a generic evil and power-hungry corporation (not that strange, cosidering other corporations and the infinity of human stupidity and greed), etc.

From one I said above, you can rightly assume that I am an insane conspiracy theorist, and I am a fan of Kevin Trudeau.
